Mark L. "Lardo" Aker
Mark L. "Lardo" Aker, 45, of East "E" Avenue, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in Superior.
He was a dispatcher for the Douglas County Communications Center and co-owner of Courtesy Cab Company.

Survivors include a daughter, Beth, and son, Greg, both of Superior; sister Susan (Richard) Banker of Ankeny, Iowa; niece Morgan Banker; and nephew Ryan Banker, also of Ankeny.
Visitation: after 5 p.m. today in Downs Funeral Home where service is at 11 a.m. Friday. Interment in Greenwood cemetery.

James Leonard Schnell
James Leonard Schnell, 51, of Menifee, Calif., departed this world on Saturday, June 16, 2001.
He was born March 5, 1950, in Superior to Patricia and Raymond Schnell. He graduated from the former Cathedral High School in 1968 and later earned his bachelor of science in mathematics and computer programming in 1972 from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Upon completing college, he was commissioned into the Air Force and completed his military career with the rank of captain in 1977. He returned to Superior and began a career in sales which led him to California, where he was most recently general manager for Patrick Industries.

His passions included the Minnesota Vikings, NASCAR racing, hiking, golfing, basketball and trips home to Superior to visit with family and friends. He never met a stranger, giving to all, patient, understanding and a compassion for life.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Schnell in 1991, and his father, Raymond Schnell in 2000.

Jim is survived by his wife, Judy of Menifee, Calif.; a daughter, Katie Schnell of Superior; a son, Ryan Schnell of Superior; stepsons Robert Belville of Texas and David Belville of Florida; three grandchildren; his stepmother, Elayne Schnell of Superior; brothers Jerry (Mary) Schnell of Superior and John (Sara) Schnell of Appleton, Wis.; a sister, Janet (Don) Nindorf of Superior; three stepbrothers; a stepsister, uncles Leonard (Betty) Schnell of Florida and William (Betty) Schnell of Illinois; many nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends, Dave and Kathy McCathie of Georgia; and many other friends that will miss him dearly.
Visitation: 5 p.m. today in William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home with a scripture service scheduled for 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Cathedral of Christ the King, the Rev. Father Daniel Dahlberg as celebrant. Interment in Calvary cemetery. Pallbearers for the service will be Scott Byrnes, Bill Schnell, Richard Schnell, Doug Score, Jim Gotelaere, Paul Hassler and Allan Adams.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Nemadji Golf Course.

Elsie A. Greenberg
Elsie A. Greenberg, 88, of East First Street died Monday, June 11, 2001, in St. Mary's/Duluth Clinic in Superior.
She is survived by her husband, Harry C.; daughter Gail Frye of Chetek, Wis.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mae Hesselgrave of Sussex, Wis.
Visitation: one hour prior to the 1:30 p.m. funeral service Friday in Downs Funeral Home, Superior. Interment in Lakeview cemetery in Chetek.

David H. Erickson Jr.
David H. Erickson Jr., 76, of South Darrow Road died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Delorse; daughters Julie (Dennis) Wedan of Maple, Bonnie (Tom) Hegman of Princeton, Minn., and Debra Erickson of Whittier, Calif.; a son, David (Diane) Erickson of Whittier; sisters Bernice Erickson and Ina Anderson, both of Superior; and grandsons Bryan, Chad and Adam Wedan, and Dan Hegman.
Visitation: begins at 5 p.m. Friday and continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Darrow Road Wesleyan Church. Committal prayers will follow at the Greenwood cemetery. Downs Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Frank F.A. "Pancho" Puglisi
Frank F. A. "Pancho" Puglisi, 88, of Superior died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in his residence.
He was born in Duluth on May 18, 1913, to Sam and Julia (Reed) Puglisi. He was a 1933 Denfeld graduate. Frank had retired from Minnesota Power as a chief engineer at the Hibbard Station.

He was a member of the Superior Elks Lodge 403 and a life member of the West Duluth Moose Lodge 1478. He was an avid bowler and golfer. Frank had bowled in leagues for the past 64 years. He was named to the Duluth Area Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1997.

He was preceded in death by a son, Leonard; a brother; and three sisters.

He is survived by sons Frank (Marian) and Bruce of Duluth; a daughter-in-law, Carol (Lawrence) Pugsley of Verndale, Minn., a daughter, Judy (Don) Fencil of Duluth; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and his companion, Cyrilla White of Superior.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday and continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Foley Chapel, the Rev. Patrick Puglisi officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St.

Verna M. Johnson
Verna M. Johnson, 77, of Superior died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, in her home.
Surviving are sons Mark (Penny) Johnson of Superior, Stephen (Patricia) Johnson of Superior and Greg Johnson of Madison; a daughter, Patricia (Benjamin) Sher of Sacramento, Calif.; three grandsons; and two granddaughters.
Visitation: 5 until the 7 p.m. scripture service today in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Saturday in Cathedral of Christ the King Church. Interment in Calvary cemetery.

Edward Van Overmeiren
Edward Van Overmeiren, 83, longtime Allouez area resident, died Friday, June 1, 2001.
Edward is survived by his wife, Marian; four daughters; three sons; a sister; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday with a rosary service at 6 p.m. in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

Lois Jones
Lois Jones, 92, lifelong Superior area resident, died Friday, June 1, 2001.
She is survived by her husband, Vernon; sons Les (Grace), Bill (Rosa Lee) and Bob (Deborah) Jones; daughters Lois (Rod) Lundberg and Carol (Oland) Henderson; a sister; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. memorial service Tuesday in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Inurnment in Greenwood cemetery.

Josephine B. McMeekin
Josephine B. McMeekin, 86, a lifelong Superior resident died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
Born Aug. 23, 1914, in Superior, she was the daughter of Anna (Gratt) and Leo Blatt. She grew up and attended schools in Superior. She was employed by Holzberg Laundry and retired in 1982. She was a member of the Laundry Teamsters Union.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1970; parents Anna and Leo Blatt, a sister, Sister Mary Victorian Blatt; a brother, Leo Blatt; and a nephew, Michael Bloomquist.

Josephine is survived by a sister, Victoria (Joseph) Bloomquist of Superior; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: begins 5 p.m. Sunday in William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, where a scripture service will be at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. Monday in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Daniel Dahlberg officiating. Burial in Calvary cemetery.

William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements. If friends so desire, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Cathedral School.

Brendan E. Vail
Brendan E. Vail, 31, of Superior died Friday, May 4, 2001, in Grand Marais.
He was born in Minneapolis on Nov. 19, 1969. He had worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a conductor and was currently employed by Jeff Foster Trucking as a truck driver.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry, and a son, Jacob, both at home; three brothers; and three sisters.
Visitation: 10:30 until the 11:30 a.m. memorial service Tuesday in Faith United Methodist Church, the Rev. Joel Certa-Werner officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home, Superior.

Chad M. Rozowski
Chad M. Rozowski, 24, of North 11th Street died early Thursday, May 10, 2001, as a result of injuries from a motor vehicle accident in Duluth.
Born Aug. 9, 1976, in Duluth, he had been a lifelong Superior resident.

He was attending the University of Wisconsin-Superior and worked for the Pizza Hut on London Road in Duluth.

Surviving are his parents, Jeffrey and Julie Rozowski of Superior; five sisters, Charity Rozowski, with the U.S. Air Force in Maine, and Christy, Cariann, Cayla and Corrine Rozowski, all of Superior; three brothers, Casey, Corey and Chase Rozowski, also of Superior; his grandparents, Stanley and Bev Rozowski of Superior; one nephew, Kaleb Rozowski; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation: 5 p.m. Sunday in Downs Funeral Home, where a Bible service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation continues from 9 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in Cathedral of Christ the King, the Rev. Daniel Dahlberg officiating. Interment in Calvary cemetery.

Rev. Leonard A. Carlson
Bayside Baptist Church pastor
Rev. Leonard A. Carlson, 51, of Hayes Court died Thursday, May 10, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born June 20, 1949, in Chicago.

For the past 22 years, he was pastor of Bayside Baptist Church and the former Ogden Avenue Baptist Church in Superior.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin; and a brother, Dale.

Surviving are his wife, Raysa; three daughters, Yoon (David) Raxsdale of Lafayette, La., Keisha (Brian) Pihl of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Ketsi Carlson of Superior; three sons, Young Park and Sung Park, both of Washington, D.C., and Trevor (Noel) Carlson of St. Paul, Minn.; two grandchildren, Isaiah and Sarah Raxsdale; his mother, Margaret Carlson of Downers Grove, Ill.; a brother, Ron (Tonia) Carlson of Frankfort, Ill.; and a sister, Bev (Larry) Wyrobek of Tinley Park, Ill.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Sunday in Bayside Baptist Church where the service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday. Interment in Greenwood cemetery. All services will be interpreted for the deaf. Active and honorary pallbearers will be Superior area clergy. A time for sharing for the community will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the church. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Bayside Baptist Church. Downs Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
