Owen F. "Rick" Gravening
Owen F. "Rick" Gravening, 58, of Superior died Saturday, March 24, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons Scott (Kelly), Anthony "Tony" and James Young; daughters Deanna (Thomas) Walkowak and Kimberly (John) Deer; his parents; three brothers; a sister; and 13 grandchildren.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. memorial service today in Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. Internment in Greenwood cemetery. Military honors accorded by Henry S. Blomberg VFW post 847.

Albert John Frank Sr.
Albert John Frank Sr., 64, of E Street died Friday, March 23, 2001.
He is survived by sons Ronald, Albert J. Jr. (Barbara Miner) and Michael James; daughters Kim Marie Frank and Christine Frank; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three sisters; and his former wife, Toni Karacay.
A private family memorial will be held. Should friends desire, memorials to Wisconsin State Park System. Arrangements by Downs Funeral Home, Superior.

Howard Warren Erickson
Howard Warren Erickson, 83, of Logan Avenue died Thursday, April 26, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
Howard was born Jan. 18, 1918, to Ruth (Johnson) and Reuben Erickson in Duluth. He spent his childhood years in West Duluth, attending Irving and Denfeld schools, graduating with the class of 1936. In his early years, he worked for the Coca-Cola bottling plant of Superior and Butler Shipyard.

He married the former Marian Butler on May 27, 1939. Mr. Erickson was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Japan until the end of World War II. After the war he worked for M & M Restaurant and Bar Supply Co. of Duluth and Superior. Howard also worked at the former Cronstrom's Supper Club until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of Eagles Aerie 80, VFW Post 1091 and Faith United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; and brother, Gordon.

Howard is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marian; sons David (Ruth) of West Terre Haute, Ind., and Stephen (Barbara) of Superior; grandchildren Anthony (Angel) Erickson, Adam (Clarissa) Erickson, Dea Maroz, Rijon (Debbie) Erickson; great-grandchildren Sarah, Johnathan, Halley and Judd; a brother, Reuben (Geraldine) Erickson Jr. of Sun City, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Erickson-Tucker of Sun City West, Ariz.; an aunt, Ruby Kellett of Proctor; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation: after 5 p.m. Sunday in Downs Funeral Home where service will be 11 a.m. Monday, the Rev. Joel Certa-Werner of Faith United Methodist Church officiating.

Mary M. De Smet
Mary M. De Smet, 87, of Superior died Friday, April 27, 2001, in Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior.
She was born June 6, 1913, to August and Adronie (Gevaert) Van Massenhove. Mary was united in marriage to Achiel "Archie," De Smet on Sept. 17, 1935, in Superior. She was a member of St. Anthony's Parish, the St. Anthony's Rug Ladies and the Belgian Club Auxiliary. Mary enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidering and was an avid reader.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Archie in 1998; and brothers Cyril and Louie Van Massenhove.

She is survived by sons Charles "Chuck" (Joanne) De Smet of Superior and Jerry (Kathy) De Smet of Marshfield, Wis.; daughters Jan (Dave) Gotelaere of Superior and Sue (Paul) Swaab of West Allis, Wis.; a brother, Leo (Stella) Van Massenhove of Superior; sisters Adrianne Balcer of Superior and Jean (Leo) Gray of Lakeville, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7:30 p.m. Sunday in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home in Superior with scripture service at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Superior, the Rev. Father Lee Flaherty as celebrant. Interment service follows in St. Francis Catholic cemetery, Superior. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Anthony's Parish.

Lee Anna Draver
Lee Anna Draver, 80, former longtime resident of Hammond Avenue, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in St. Francis in the Park Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born to Anna (Kieser) and Paul H. Heimerl in Winsted, Minn., on Sept. 6, 1920, and was a Superior resident for most of her life.

She was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and was a very active former member of Zion Lutheran Church, having served as their financial secretary for five years. She also taught Sunday school there, served on their building committee, and was a member of their choir and altar guild. She was a former member of the Superior Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Lee Anna was very active politically and had formerly served on the city of Superior's Zoning Board.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth George Draver, on Jan. 1, 1994; a sister, Win Hagstrom; and a brother, Robert Heimerl.

She is survived by her sons, Dr. Richard L. (Carol) Palm of Lenexa, Kan., and Gaylord W. (Dawn M.) Palm of Superior; a stepdaughter, Susan A. Daniels of Pasadena, Calif., granddaughters Julie Palm-Hutchinson of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Amanda Daniels of Santa Barbara, Calif., and a brother, Dr. Ramon Heimerl of Greeley, Colo.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Downs Funeral Home Chapel, Superior. Service at 11 a.m. Friday in Pilgrim Lutheran Church, the Rev. David Eckman officiating. Pallbearers will be: Tim Cronin, Herb Bergson, Pat Remington, David Starkey, Tracy Anderson and Tom Blatt.

Gertrude K. (Sanda) Lambert
Gertrude K. (Sanda) Lambert of Superior died Monday, March 12, 2001, in Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born May 6, 1908, in Island, Minn., and moved to Superior at age 12. She graduated from Bartley Business School. She had been employed as an administrative secretary by the former Butler Shipyards and was a secretary for Central Cooperatives. She was also employed by Superior Sheltered Industries.

Mrs. Lambert was a member of the Gordon Garden Club, the former Silver Leaf Rebekah Lodge, Minong Rebekah Lodge and Superior Eagles Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Grant Graham; and her second husband, Chester Lambert in 1977.

Mrs. Lambert is survived by nieces and nephews Leo A. (Vi) Sanda of South Range, David (Cheryl) and Bill (Sandra) Sanda, both of Superior, Pat (Donald) Shippar of Superior and Mary (Bob) Rothschadl of Superior; and many cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral Saturday in Downs Funeral Home. Norman Groehler officiating. Interment in Gordon Memorial cemetery, Gordon. Pallbearers will be William, Billy and David Sanda, Robert and Patrick Rothschadl, and Donald Shippar.

Kittie M. Larson
Kittie M. Larson, 89, a longtime South Range resident, died Sunday, July 8, 2001.
Surviving are daughters Donna Dzikonski and Rita (James) Johnson; sons Lawrence and Duane; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon service Thursday in Downs Funeral Home. Interment in Bennett cemetery.

Lila E. Larson
Lila E. Larson, 88, formerly of Foxboro died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in Fond du Lac Lutheran Home, Fond du Lac, Wis.
She is survived by her husband, August; daughters Judy Schustedt and Nancy Linnerooth; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her brother, Leonard Peterson.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Friday and service 1 p.m. Saturday in Downs Funeral Home. Burial in Greenwood cemetery, Superior. Memorials to Darrow Road Wesleyan Church or Fond du Lac Lutheran Home.

Albert Olaf Olson
Albert Olaf Olson, 80, of Superior died Saturday, July 7, 2001, in his home.
He was born Sept. 5, 1920, to Fred C. and Amanda (Swanson-Solomonson) Olson in Superior. Albert was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater as a motor pool sergeant. Albert was employed as an able-bodied seaman and wheelsman on the Great Lakes, serving with the Pittsburgh Fleet.

He was confirmed at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Superior. Albert held a lifetime membership in the VFW.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy C. Wicken; and brothers Ralph C. Olson and Clarence F. Olson.

Albert is survived by his sister, Helen Wigren of Superior; sister-in-law Esther Lofgren Olson of Mesa, Ariz.; nieces Sandra Olson of St. Paul, Diane (Archie) Sales of Savage, Minn., and Joanne Wigren of Superior; nephews Duane Fredrickson, Donald and John Wigren, all of Superior and Roger (Shari) Olson of Bloomington, Minn.; grandnieces Amanda and Alisa Sales; grandnephews Joshua Olson and Chris Sales; and special friends, Les (Nancy) Wilson of Bloomington and Genevive Smith of Superior.
Visitation: 1:30 until the 2:30 p.m. memorial service Saturday, July 28, in Fred Olson Mortuary. Inurnment in Greenwood cemetery, Superior. Arrangements by Fred Olson Mortuary, 2110 W. First St., Duluth, MN 55806.

Joseph W. Mayersak
Owned M&C Oil
Joseph W. Mayersak, 92, former owner of M&C; Oil stations, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at his home in White Bear Lake, Minn., after a long illness.
Joseph was born to Jacob and Mary Mayersak in Germany on a train to Czechoslovakia. Joseph was a lifelong resident of Superior. He married Libby Jean Conroy on Sept. 7, 1937. He owned and operated the M&C Oil Co. for 59 years until his retirement in 1995 at age 86.

The M&C; Oil Co. consisted of nine gasoline stations in Superior and Duluth. His favorite station was at Belknap Street and Catlin Avenue in Superior, where he directly participated in the operation of the facility.

He gave preferential hiring to college students and loved to say he had helped put many students through college. Many of his former college employees came back to visit with Joe after they were active in their professions. He enjoyed talking with his many customers, and was always eager to get to the station and get out on the gas pump island, so he could meet and talk with his customers.

He loved to go fishing in Canada with his children and grandchildren. He loved to "fly in" to where one could catch the big ones. He conveyed his love for fishing to his children who continue to enjoy fishing.

He is survived by his children, Dr. Joseph R. (Dianne) Mayersak of Ashburn, Va., Dr. Jerome S. (Priscilla) Mayersak of Naples, Fla., and Dr. Judith L. Cooper (John Egan) of White Bear Lake. His younger sister, Julia Giauque of Eagan, Minn., also survives Joseph. He also eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

His beloved wife of 42 years, Libby Jean (Conroy), preceded him in death Oct. 14, 1979. Seven siblings, Andrew, John, Frank, Betty Glenn, Katherine Olin, Ann Cismoski and Mary Pavlin, also preceded him in death.
Private services were held by the family. In lieu of flowers, remembrances and donations can be sent to Minnesota/Dakotas Chapter of Alzheimer Association, 4550 W. 77th St., Suite 200, Edina, MN 55435. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
