Frank J. Godfrey, 93, of Superior passed away Sunday, July 8, 2001, in St. Francis Nursing Home.
He is survived by a son, Thom (Beverly); a daughter, Lorna DeMars; a brother, Thomas (Audrey); eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m service today in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Burial in St. Pius cemetery, Solon Springs.

David "Tiny" James Herendeen
David "Tiny" James Herendeen, 51, of Ogden Avenue, Superior, formerly of Duluth died Saturday, July 7, 2001, in his home.
David was born in Duluth to James and Mary Ann (Ward) Herendeen and was a longtime resident. He was a Navy veteran and an iron worker with Local 563 for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife, Carla A. DeMars; sons Jason M. of Duluth and Zachariah W. of Madison, Wis.; a daughter, Tiffani L. of Rock Springs, Wyo.; stepsons Ryan, Mathew and Philip Schweikert of Superior; sisters Diane K. (Ken) Johnson of Bloomington, Minn., Janice C. Herendeen of Fort Collins, Colo., and Doris Ann Herendeen of Cartagena, Columbia, South America; and his father and mother, James and Mary Ann of Duluth; many friends, nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Wednesday in Salem Covenant Church. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Linda M. Higgins
Linda M. Higgins, 54, of North Fifth Street died Friday, July 6, 2001.
Survivors include her lifelong partner, Fred McMeekin; daughters Tracy (Jon) TePoel, Sherry Drain, Daphne Day, Billie Jo (Steve) Drain-Paulson, Dana Drain, Jesi Higgins-Wicklund, Starla Higgins Moore and Lailani Higgins; sons Lynn Drain, Brien "B.J." Drain, Daniel Drain, Darrell Higgins, Jason Higgins and Richard Trautline; 25 grandchildren; mother, Julia Hull; a brother, Floyd "Skip" Hull.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Downs Funeral Home. Inurnment in Greenwood cemetery.

Daniel P. Gaffke
Daniel P. Gaffke, 85, of Superior died Thursday, July 5, 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; sons Daniel Jr., Gene (Ethel) Lindberg; daughters Delores (Marty) Burd, Shirley (Bill) Harrington, Karen (Dennis) Howard, Gerri Williams; 23 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Regina Birchland.
Public gathering of family and friends: from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday in Royalton Manor, Superior. Inurnment in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by William-Downs-LeSage Funeral Home.

Lloyd George Bourdage
Lloyd George Bourdage, 87, passed away and went to be with the Lord Thursday, June 7, 2001.
He was a longtime resident of Superior and Duluth but had spent several years in Littleton, Colo., and Gallup, N.M. He was born in Chisholm Aug. 10, 1913, to Henry and Edna (Miner) Bourdage and was raised on Sunnyside Road in South Range. He married Ardith Floy Amelia Olson in 1935. He was employed in the automobile business for most of his life. Lloyd founded the Buick dealership, Superior Motors Inc., in 1943 and sold it in 1957. He also owned the Piedmont Bottle Shop in Duluth for many years until his retirement. Lloyd served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.

His love of people and his fun-loving ways were his trademark. A helping hand, a smile and his perpetual optimism will be missed by those who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years; his parents; and brothers Harvey and Willard Bourdage.

Lloyd is survived by daughters Gloria (Paul) Heytens of Superior and Amelia Island, Fla., and Janet (Walter) Courter of Amelia Island; sons Ronald (Sherry) Bourdage of Gallup, N.M., and Terry Bourdage of Napa, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters Helen Hall of Portland, Ore., and Madelyn Warrick of San Francisco Bay area, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; dear Olson family members and many beloved and much appreciated friends at the Phoenix Villa.
Private graveside family farewell will be held at Greenwood cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospital in Superior.

Margaret E. Clark
Margaret E. Clark, 85, passed away Friday, March 9, 2001, in St. Francis in the Park Health & Rehabilitation, Superior.
She is survived by her sons, Ronald (Lois) and retired Lt. Col. Lawrence (Marjorie); grandchildren Glenda (Rick) Mattila, Kimberly (John) Brooks, Vicky Grant and Dr. Chris (Martha); and several great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Noon until the 1:30 p.m. service today in Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home, Superior. Interment in family lot in Greenwood.

Ramon "Ray" Backlund
Ramon "Ray" Backlund, 67, longtime Superior resident, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, in his home.
Ramon is survived by his wife, Charlene; daughters Kim (Rodney) Visger, Rae Ann Backlund and Jean Ann Backlund; a son, Charles "Butch" Backlund; three grandchildren; three brothers; and four sisters.
Visitation: 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass Tuesday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial in St. Francis cemetery.

Lawrence B. Hovick
Lawrence B. Hovick, 87, formerly of Superior died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Englewood, Fla.
He was born Nov. 16, 1913, to Hans and Hazel (Lawrence) Hovick in Cleveland, and he immediately moved to Superior, his father having been in shipping.

He was married to the former Allaine Pelletier in 1941 and operated the Superior Dental Lab for 30 years, retiring in 1971. He was a devoted father and grandfather and an avid fisherman and hunter. He was well-known by his friends as being "king" of the Brule River.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Allaine in 1994; a brother, Norman in 1989; a sister, Marge in 1959; an infant daughter, Jody B. Hovick in 1962; and his parents.

He is survived by daughters Susan Meyer of Duluth and Sheryl Smiley of Englewood; a son, Rob of Marshfield, Wis.; grandchildren Jill Smiley Pockey of Shipshewana, Ind., Jeff Smiley of Englewood, Melissa Meyer Shene of Duluth, George Meyer of Orlando, Fla., Pat Meyer of Lakeland, Fla., Hans Meyer of Orlando, Andrew Meyer of Duluth and Hannah Hovick of Marshfield; great-grandchildren Kyle and Erin Rockey of Shipshewana, Mary Grace Meyer of Orlando and Clark Smiley of Englewood; and step-grandchildren Jake and Jessie Iwanski of Marshfield.
Cremation has taken place and family members have requested any memorials be directed to hospice.

Robert J. Eckberg
Robert J. Eckberg, 72, of North 37th Street died Friday, June 29, 2001, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He is survived by a son and daughter in Fond du Lac, Wis.; sisters Evelyn Benjamin and Elizabeth Turner; and brothers David, Daniel, Tom and Mark Eckberg.
No services are planned. Downs Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Violet M. Olson
Violet M. Olson, 81, of North 37th Street died Sunday, July 1, 2001, in Beverly Health and Rehabilation Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Cooley Wheeler; grandchildern Lynn, Allen and Mike Weir; great-grandchildren Rachel Becklin and Clinton Weisinger; sisters Alice Allen and Carol Liston; a brother, Stanley Berg; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 11 to the noon service today in Downs Funeral Home. Interment in Greenwood cemetery.

Myrtle Lou Peterson
(Martineau) Kolek
Myrtle Lou Peterson (Martineau) Kolek, 79, of Superior died Friday, June 29, 2001.
She is survived by sons Tom, Doug (Jenny), and Dennis (Suzie); sisters Agnes O'Brien and Thea Granfors; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law and son-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation 5 p.m. Thursday with a scripture service at 7 p.m. in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial 11:30 a.m. Friday in Cathedral of Christ the King. Interment in Riverside cemetery.

Rev. Leonard A. Carlson
Bayside Baptist Church pastor
Rev. Leonard A. Carlson, 51, of Hayes Court died Thursday, May 10, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He was born June 20, 1949, in Chicago.

For the past 22 years, he was pastor of Bayside Baptist Church and the former Ogden Avenue Baptist Church in Superior.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin; and a brother, Dale.

Surviving are his wife, Raysa; daughters, Yoon (David) Raxsdale of Lafayette, La., Keisha (Brian) Pihl of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Ketsi Carlson of Superior; three sons, Young Park and Sung Park, both of Washington, D.C., and Trevor (Noel) Carlson of St. Paul, Minn.; two grandchildren, Isaiah and Sarah Raxsdale; his mother, Margaret Carlson of Downers Grove, Ill.; a brother, Ron (Tonia) Carlson of Frankfort, Ill.; and a sister, Bev (Larry) Wyrobek of Tinley Park, Ill.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today in Bayside Baptist Church where the service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday. Interment in Greenwood cemetery. All services will be interpreted for the deaf. Active and honorary pallbearers will be Superior area clergy. A time for sharing for the community will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the church. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Bayside Baptist Church. Downs Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Paul P. Marsolek
Paul P. Marsolek, 88, longtime Superior resident died Friday, May 11, 2001, in St. Francis Home in the Park.
He is survived by a son, Ted Marsolek; a sister, Loretta (Joseph) Fisher; and a niece, Barbara (Kolanek) Dryer.
Visitation: 5 p.m. Tuesday in William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home with a scripture service at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Cathedral of Christ the King. Interment in Calvary cemetery.
