Bennie Ochis
Bennie Ochis, 92, of Eveleth, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, in Virginia Regional Medical Center.
He is survived by his children, Ronald (Wanda) Ochis of Lawton, Okla., Charles (Dorothy) Ochis of Eagan, Minn., and Susan (Bruce Urbiha) Johnson of Eveleth; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service: 2 p.m. Wednesday in Eveleth cemetery.

Earl Armand Johnson
Earl Armand Johnson, 70, of Esko died Thursday, April 19, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth.
He was born June 30, 1930, in Cloquet, the son of Waino and Impi (Savo) Johnson. A life-long area resident, Earl was a 1948 graduate of Esko High School. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army from 1948-1954. Earl was a long time employee of Wood Conversion and Conwed. He was a life member of Hebert Kennedy VFW 3979, a member of the Eagles and Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, playing cribbage and was an avid sports fan. He especially enjoyed visiting with all of his friends and family. He will be fondly remembered as a kind, loving person who was always there for his family and friends and would bend over backwards to help anyone.

He was preceded in death by his father, Waino, in 1976; his mother, Impi, in 1993; and a sister, Esther Fagre, in 1980.

Earl is survived by sisters Ellen (Clarence) Larsen of Esko, Viola (Robert) Mittlestadt of Cloquet and Irene Hopkins of St. Paul; aunts Edna Savo and Sylvia Siltanen; nephews Steven Larsen, David Larsen, Donnie Fagre, Dennis Fagre, Robert M. Mittlestadt, Tim Mittlestadt, Darren C. Johnson, Wade Hopkins and Richard Hopkins; nieces De Anna Bodus, LeAnne Bakri, Melodie Hopkins, Cindy Fagre, Sandra Merrill, Judy A. Johnson, Debra Rowe, Kari Young, Emily Mittlestadt, Betty Jo Zacker, Angela Minimum, Elizabeth Ojutkangas, Susan Oates and Doreen Fantasia; numerous grandnephews and grandnieces; and his faithful dog, Woody.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet, where visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday. Interment in Apostolic Lutheran cemetery, Esko. Michael Anthony "Mish"
Marincel
Michael Anthony "Mish" Marincel, 84, of Parkville died Thursday, April 19, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 27, 1916, in Mountain Iron, the son of Joseph and Helen (Majetich) Marincel. He was a 1935 graduate of Mountain Iron High School and a 1937 graduate of National Mechanical School.

Mike married Ione Schulz May 4, 1946, in Mountain Iron and was a lifelong resident of Parkville. Mike was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with armored battalions in the European Theater where he attained rank of sergeant. He was a general mechanical foreman for U.S. Steel Oliver and Minntac, retiring in 1979 after 43 years of service.

Mike was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia, Knights of Columbus, the Virginia Reelers, the Virginia Senior Citizens, the Mark and George Klobuchar VFW Post 4456 of Gilbert, and served on the Mountain Iron School Board, the Library Board, the Housing Board, and the Calvary cemetery Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Marincel; and sisters Mary Adamich and Kathryn Klarich.

Mike is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ione; a son, Michael R. (Sandy) Marincel of Hibbing; a daughter, Michele (Dennis) Thomson of Warroad; a sister-in-law, Melba Marincel of St. Louis; sisters Ann (Carl) Fayon of Virginia, Madeline "Munge" Rahne of Grand Rapids; grandchildren Rhonda (Ken) Rein of Richfield, Raquel (Eric) Lund of Hibbing, Dana (Todd) Busch of St. Paul and Brigitte (Al Amador) Frederick of Byron, Texas; great-grandchildren Nicole and Nolan Rein; cousins, the Rev. Father Frank Marincel, Sister Margaret Marincel and Joe (Marlys) Marincel; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Sunday with a Knights of Columbus rosary service at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel, Virginia. Visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Virginia, the Rev. Fathers John O'Donnell and Frank Marincel, concelebrants.

Edgar J. Brooks
Edgar J. Brooks, 85, of Hibbing died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Golden Crest Health Care Center, Hibbing.
He was born Jan. 9, 1916, in Rowan, Iowa, to Fred and Ina (Snyder) Brooks. He grew up and attended school at Buck Lake. On March 21, 1935, he was united in marriage with Allie Peratalo in Grand Rapids. Following marriage, the couple made their home at Buck Lake. The couple owned and operated the Napoleon Lake Resort at Napoleon Lake and later owned and operated the world renowned Brooks Taxidermy Shop in Minneapolis for 30 years.

The book, "Back To Buck Lake," was published as a biography of Edgar and Allie Brooks. In 1974, the couple returned to Buck Lake, making Hibbing their home in 1992. Edgar was a member of the Nashwauk Lutheran Church, the Maple Hill Senior Citizens and Community Senior Citizens. He formed the Coo-Coo Band that played at various senior citizens organizations, nursing homes, and at the DECC in Duluth. He had also been a speaker at AA meetings.

He was preceded in death by brothers George and Fred Brooks; sisters Thelma Moellering, Marjorie Mantle, Ruth Brooks; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Allie Brooks; a daughter, Marjorie (Earl) Kitchen of Grandy, Minn.; grandsons Keith (Debbie) Kitchen of Augusta, Wis., Kelly (Molly) Kitchen of South St. Paul; a great-granddaughter, Katie Kitchen of South St. Paul; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Sunday in Range Funeral Home, Hibbing, and continuing from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Nashwauk Lutheran Church, Nashwauk. Burial in Nashwauk cemetery.

Judith Marie "Finn" Smith
Judith Marie "Finn" Smith, 62, of Iron River died Wednesday April 18, 2001, in Duluth.
Survivors include her husband, Paul; sons Duane (Getta), Danny (Debbie), Darryl (Louise); a brother, James Kortesmaki; sisters Bertha Boyer and Joannie Edmunds; eight grandchildren; her mother-in-law, Ruth Smith.
Visitation: after 5 p.m. Sunday in Downs Funeral Home Chapel. Service 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

Frank L. "Totsie" Mavetz
Frank L. "Totsie" Mavetz, 81, of Ely died Thursday, April 19, 2001, in his home.
He was born Jan. 12, 1920, in Ely to Joseph and Frances (Koprivetz) Mavetz and was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School. Frank was inducted into the Army Feb. 2, 1942, where he became sergeant and infantry squad leader with the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, Sixth Army in Hollandia, New Guinea, Panoan Islands and on Leyte, Mindoro, Mindanao in the Philippines. He was twice wounded in action, on May 5 and June 12, 1945, on Mindanao. "Never had a furlough in 44 months." He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

For 19 years, Frank worked as drill helper at Reserve Mining in Babbitt and from 1948 to 1962 he was fireman and engineer for the DM&IR; railroad. He was a member of the VFW Post 2717 and the American Legion 248, both in Ely, and the Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rose, in 1998; sisters Angela Mikolich, Rose Pluth, Mary Lobe, and Frances Nelson; and brothers Joseph and John Mavetz.

Survivors include a brother, Louis (Julia) Mavetz of Ely; sisters Josephine (Tauno) Maki of Winton and Margaret (James) Bungert of Ely; numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial Mass: 11 a.m. Monday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Ely, Father James Scheuer as celebrant. Inurnment in Ely cemetery. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.

Hilton Robert Heineke
Hilton Robert Heineke, 57, of Maple, formerly of St. Cloud, Minn., died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Surviving are his mother, Rosemary; sisters Linda (David) Sholes, Elizabeth (Michael) Clumeck, Kathy (Nick) Giglio, Susan (Cass) Mackert, Mary (David) Haertzen; brothers David (Marsha), Michael (Sue); nine nephews; six nieces; and extended family in the area.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Mission Covenant Church, Poplar. Private family burial. Memorials preferred to the church.

Edna M. Gross
Edna M. Gross, 81, longtime Hudson, Wis., and Lake Elmo, Minn., resident died Wednesday, April 18, 2001.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Gross.

Survivors include sons Gerald (Louise) of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Ron (Judy) of Wyoming, Minn.; sisters Ailie Kiheri and Rose Knudson of Kettle River; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Elmira Gross of South St. Paul.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Sunday in O'Connell Family Funeral Home, Hudson, (715) 386-3725. Service 11 a.m. Monday in United Methodist Church, Hudson. Memorials preferred to the church. Burial Salem Methodist cemetery, Inver Grove Heights.

Edwin O. Lindfors
Edwin O. Lindfors, 65, of Zim died Thursday, April 19, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in the Range Funeral Home, Virginia. Burial in New Zim cemetery.

Louis J. Bozich
Louis J. Bozich, 79, of Gilbert died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Virginia.
He is survived by a brother, Martin Bozich; sisters Marie Orazem, Frances Caven, Anne (Lewis) Jagunich, Jen (Tony) Kavcich and Helen Pechar; several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call: 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. memorial service Monday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Gilbert. Inurnment in Gilbert cemetery. Memorials preferred.

Ashley Lynn Mundell
Ashley Lynn Mundell, 13, of Sparta, Wis., died Friday, April 6, 2001, in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.
She was born April 26, 1987, in St. Cloud, Minn., to John and Debra (Loesch) Mundell.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Marvin Mundell.

She is survived by her parents; a sister, Annalyse Mundell at home; paternal grandmother, Jeanette Mundell of McGregor; maternal grandparents Richard and Joyce Loesch of Paynesville, Minn.

John and Debra and family wish to thank the staff at Gundersen Lutheran and the nursing staff who helped to care for Ashley at home.
Private services Monday in Gundersen Lutheran Chapel. Woodruff Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting family with arrangements.
