Norman Nicholas Esala
Norman Nicholas Esala, 66, of Embarrass died Friday, April 6, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
He was born April 5, 1935, in Sandy Township, the son of Nick J. and Ethel (Pernu) Esala. He was a 1953 graduate of Embarrass High School, and he married Evelyn Koskela Sept. 26, 1953, in Sandy Township. He was a longtime resident of Waasa township. Norman was the sales manager at Lundgren's Motors in Eveleth for 33 years, retiring in 1996. He was an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, where he was a roundtable coordinator, the Men's Club organizer, and sang in the choir. He was a member of the Babbitt Lions Club and past president and member of the Virginia Lions Club. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, and the Helen Keller Award. He served on the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank Board, the Diabetes Foundation Board, and on the Board of Directors for the Embarrass-Vermilion Credit Union. He loved being with his family and was also committed to his church and service organizations.

He was preceded in death by his father, Nick; and a brother, David.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; sons Todd (Mary) Esala of Duluth and Ted (Gail) Esala of Tower; daughters Corinne (Brad) Jordan of Virginia, Christine (Dan) Lindquist of Alexandria, Minn., Carin (Alan) Scholl of Babbitt, Connie (Michael) Scholl of Babbitt, and Cheryl Lind of Rosemount, Minn.; mother, Ethel Esala of Virginia; brothers John Esala of Duluth, Rudy (Nancy) Esala of Phoenix, and Dan (Celia) Esala of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; a sister, Judy (Larry) Poss of Cloquet: sisters-in-law Nina Esala of Marco Island, Fla., and Linda Koskela of Anoka, Minn., and Embarrass; grandchildren Andy, Ashley, Adam, Kelly, Erik, Becky, Tina, Karl, Pat, Brian, Ross, Brett, Anna, Jenni, Mindi, Tania, Erica, Sadie, Signe, and Alex; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday in Bauman-Cron, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia. Visitation continues Tuesday from 9 until the 10 a.m. service in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, the Rev. Daniel Clemons officiating. Interment follows in the Waasa Township cemetery. Memorials preferred.

Pete Sever N. Jarvis
Pete Sever N. Jarvis, 82, of Moose Lake died Friday, April 6, 2001.
Survived by children Marvin (Raeleen), Maurice (Julie), Marlene (Wayne) Meier, Michael (Ginger), Merle, Monte (Tammy), Mary (Michael) Flowers; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Monday in Hamlin-Hansen-Koslosli Funeral Home, Moose Lake, with a prayer service at 7. Visitation continues from 9:30 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Tuesday in St. Mary of the Lake (Fourth and Bald Eagle), White Bear Lake, Minn. Burial in St. Mary of the Lake cemetery.

Viola P. Harder Kulaszewicz
Viola P. Harder Kulaszewicz, 71, of Hoyt Lakes died Wednesday, April 4, 2001.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene; a son, John (Dixie) Harder; daughters Lois (David) Young, Joyce (Darwin) Bailey and Ruth (Edward) Vegdahl; a stepdaughter, Sara Stanley and stepson, Scott Kulaszewicz; four brothers; a sister; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Aurora, continuing from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Trinity United Methodist Church, Hoyt Lakes. Burial in Hoyt Lakes Memorial cemetery.

Ruby G. Melancon
Ruby G. Melancon, 87, of Moose Lake, formerly of Duquette died Friday, April 6, 2001, in Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake.
Born July 1, 1913, in Brownsville, Minn., to Edward and Helen (Corbette) Rupp, Ruby married Francis D. Melancon Sept. 5, 1937, in Kerrick.

She was a member of the C.C. Club in Duquette, and enjoyed fishing, sewing and knitting.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Francis; four sisters; and an infant son.

She is survived by a son, Terry Melancon of Duquette; a daughter, Mary (Raymond) Adamczak of Kerrick; grandchildren Timothy (Janet) Adamczak of Barstow, Calif., Roger (Kathy) Adamczak of Rush City, Minn., Jeff Adamczak of Kerrick, Andrea (Robert) Nelson of Kerrick and Jamie (Jennifer Storrar) Adamczak of Kerrick; great-grandchildren Timothy Adamczak II, Anthony Nelson, and Nycole Nelson, all of Kerrick.
Visitation: 9 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake, Father Michael Hayes officiating. Burial in St. Francis Catholic cemetery, Duquette. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

Esther Vivian Hill
Esther Vivian Hill, 93, of Esko died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Community Memorial Nursing Home in Cloquet.
She was born July 22, 1907, in Thomson Township to Erick and Lizzie (Eskuri) Mattson. She married Eino Hill on April 3, 1930, in Thomson Township. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, where she was active in the church choir and the Ruth Circle. She was also a member of the Esko Senior Citizens.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Eino; brothers Mike, Bill, Erick and Bob Mattson; and a sister, Lempi Juntunen.

She is survived by sons Bob (Jan) Hill of White Bear Lake, Minn., Jim (Peggy) Hill of Duluth, Norm Hill of Esko; a daughter, Mary (Evert) House of Salt Lake City; a sister, Ailie Mattson of Esko; 16 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet, and from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 1 Elizabeth Ave., Esko. Burial in St. Matthew's cemetery, Esko.

Lorna Skorich
Lorna Skorich, 83, of Long Beach, Calif., formerly of Hibbing died Monday, April 2, 2001, in Long Beach.
She was born July 20, 1917, in Carlton, the daughter of George and Lydia Mathews. She lived in Hibbing until moving to Long Beach in 1982. She worked at Leisure Hills as a physical therapy aide for many years.

She is survived by a son, Michael (Dianne) Richards of Hibbing; a daughter, Patricia (Richard) Sonnenberg of Long Beach and grandchildren Ross (Lesley) Sonnenberg and Chad Sonnenberg, all of Long Beach, and Ryan and Leeanne Richards, both of Hibbing; a great-grandson, Noah Sonnenberg of Long Beach.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. in the Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home Chapel, Hibbing. Prayer service led by Pastor Lyle Rossing. Spring interment in Riverside cemetery, Barnum.

Family services provided by Anderson-Daniels, Bauman Family Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Homer Willard Schaffert Sr.
Homer Willard Schaffert Sr., 76, of Poplar died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in Duluth.
Survivors include his wife, Nina; sons Homer W. Schaffert Jr., Lonnie E. (Francine) Schaffert Sr., Patrick M. (Tammy) Schaffert; a daughter, Shirley Bryant; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sophia A. Peterson; stepsons John A. Wicks, Ronald L. Wicks; a niece and two nephews.
Visitation: 5 until the 7 p.m. service Sunday in Downs Funeral Home Chapel. Interment in family lot in Washington state.

Thomas Edmund Anderson
Thomas Edmund Anderson of Pawleys Island, S.C., died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in Georgetown, S.C.
Born Nov. 10, 1923, in Hibbing, he was the son of Andrew O. and Charlotte Stevens Anderson, both of whom preceded him in death. Mr. Anderson was a World War II, U.S. Air Force veteran serving at Manduria, Italy. He graduated from University of Southern California, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in business. Mr. Anderson was a member of VFW Post 11439, Aad Temple Shrine in Duluth, and member of Seagull Golf Club. He was also a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Alexia L. Anderson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family will receive friends: 7-9 p.m. Monday at Goldfitch Funeral Home, Murrells Inlet, S.C. Services at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Ralph Bernard Hinnenkamp
Ralph Bernard Hinnenkamp, 84, died Friday, March 30, 2001, in Leisure Hills Care Center, Grand Rapids.
Ralph was born May 8, 1916, in St. Cloud, Minn., and was an alumnus of St. John's Preparatory School in Collegeville, Minn. After graduating from Cathedral High School in St. Cloud, he served in the medical detachment of the U.S. Army.

His working years were all in the produce departments of the Red Owl Food Stores. He started at the family-owned Red Owl in Sauk Rapids, Minn., and retired in 1976 as produce manager of the Grand Rapids Red Owl.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; two brothers; two sisters; and a grandson.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Bertha; four sisters; sons Fred (Elaine) of Royalton, Minn., Mike (Terry) of Jersey City, N.J., Pat of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Susan, of St. Cloud; stepdaughters Mary (Steve) of Henderson, Nev., Helen (Myron) of Maple Grove, Minn., Carol (Rupert) of Henderson; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Private family graveside service in Itasca Calvary cemetery Chapel officiated by the Rev. Dennis Hier. Celebrations of Ralph's life are pending at several locations for later dates. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Catholic Diocese of St. Cloud, 305 N. Seventh Ave., St. Cloud, MN 56303, or Pleasant Seasons Activities Fund, 2815 Hwy. 169 S., Grand Rapids, MN 55744. Marcella M. "Peggy" Nyman
Marcella M. "Peggy" Nyman, 71, of Ely died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital after a long, courageous battle with cancer and with her family by her side.
She was born Sept. 27, 1929, in St. Paul to Nordeen and Anna Ruth (Dyer) Nelson. She was a graduate of Mechanic Arts High School and attended nurse's training. On May 26, 1950, she married William "Bill" Nyman in St. Paul. Peggy worked at Barbara Ann Bakery in Ely for 15 years. She was a past president of Rebekahs and a member of the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers.

She was preceded in death by her father, Nordeen Nelson; husband, Bill; and a son, William Nyman.

Survivors include daughters Marie (Robert) Ross of Hoyt Lakes, Laura Nyman of Maple Grove, Minn., and Sandra "Missy" Nyman of Ely; sons Robert (Mary) and Paul (Tina) Nyman, both of Ely; her mother, Anna Ruth Nelson of St. Paul; brothers Roland (Lois), Clarence (Sylvia), and Floyd (Teri) Nelson, all of Mora, Minn., and Jack (Gayle) Nelson of Stillwater, Minn.; a sister, Veronica (Ralph) Sletten of Maplewood, Minn.; brothers-in-law Jiggs (Sis) Nyman of Mountain Home, Ark., and Glen (Gladys) Nyman of Ely; grandchildren Kevin, Keith, Kristopher, Amy and Robbie Nyman and Beth Ross; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Service: Noon Monday in Praise Fellowship Center, Ely, Pastor George Wick officiating. Spring burial in Ely cemetery. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely.
