Bernice E. Sy, 73, of Virginia died Thursday, March 22, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include sons Michael Sy, Jeffery Cole and William Cole; daughters Constance Silverio and Susan Kuhlman; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorraine Broman.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Virginia. Arrangements by Landmark Funeral Home, Virginia.

Paulette Gale (Kihlstadius) Eck
Paulette Gale (Kihlstadius) Eck, 53, of International Falls died Friday, March 23, 2001.
Survivors include daughters Kimberly (Michael) Cabana and Angela Eck; her mother, Ines Kihlstadius; grandmother, Ragna Duvos; sisters Iona Ewald and Renae (Darrel) Bauer; and three nieces.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Friday in Green-Larsen Memorial Chapel, International Falls. Interment in Forest Hill cemetery. Memorials preferred.

William Peltonen
William Peltonen, 77, of Buhl died Friday, March 23, 2001, in Minnesota Veterans Home, Silver Bay.
He was born July 29, 1923, to Alex and Sadie (Hautala) Peltonen in Buhl. He graduated from high school in Buhl in 1942 where he made All Range Football Team as a guard. He served the U.S. Army as an engineer during World War II in Patton's Army and worked for U.S. Steel for 29 years until retiring in 1971. He was a member of American Legion, VFW and Moose. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alex.

He is survived by special friend, Myrtle Fuenffinger; a son, Richard; mother, Sadie; brothers Dick and Bob; grandson Doug Wentland; and great-granddaughter, Hannah Wentland.
No service. Burial in Buhl cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Daniel S. Kush
Daniel S. Kush, 65, of Aurora died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
He was born June 26, 1935, in Grand Forks, N.D., to Stanley and Helen (Lepak) Kush. He was a 1955 graduate of Pershing High School in Plummer, Minn.

On Nov. 12, 1955, he married Yvonne Delage in Brooks, Minn.

He worked as a farm maintenance person in Hamilton, N.D., until moving to Aurora in 1956. He worked construction for a short time until December 1956, when he began working for the Aurora Public Schools as a stock clerk. Later he transferred to the transportation department, where he was known as "Bus Driver Dan." On June 28, 1993, he retired from Mesabi East as transportation director and head mechanic. He was a certified welder from Eveleth Vo-Tech and was a certified drivers training instructor for class "D" licensing from St. Cloud Technical College.

Dan was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Range Snowmobile Club and was instrumental in organizing the Aurora Moose Club. He served as president of Local AFSCME 2780, was an avid card player and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren's sporting events. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, traveling, woodworking and was known to many as a meticulous craftsman. Dan enjoyed people and being involved in community activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Joanne Kush; a niece, Gina Kush; and a nephew, Gregory Kush.

Dan is survived by his wife, Yvonne; daughters Debra (Al) Ehrich of Lake Vermilion/Tower and Tracy (Paul) McDonald of Ely; sons Glen and Timothy, both of Duluth; brothers Clarence of Champlin, Minn., and Henry (Gladys) of Iron; sisters Lorraine (Kenneth) Kapler of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Marlene Kush and Sherry (Rick) Hanson, both of Blaine, Minn.; grandchildren Sarah and Emily Goette, and Megan and Natalie McDonald; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today with 7 p.m. parish prayers in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Aurora and 1 until the 2 p.m. funeral Mass Saturday in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Aurora. Father Joseph Sirba as celebrant. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery, Aurora.

Ruth Emily Baker Fish
Ruth Emily Baker Fish, 80, of Spirit Lake Manor, formerly of Silver Bay and Hibbing died Saturday, March 17, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.
She was born Oct. 9, 1920, to Amiel and Abigail Baker in Remer. Ruth worked as a private baby nurse in Minnesota and California for many years. She attained her nursing degree at age 45 in California and worked as a surgical technician and in the emergency room. When she returned to Minnesota, she was a home health-care nurse, foster parent, foster grandparent and senior companion.

Ruth was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by daughters Hazel Pionk of Minneapolis, Nancy Keezer of Duluth and Delcie Frolund of Mound, Minn.; sons Clarence (Neta) of California and Robert of Silver Bay; and their father, Delbert of Minneapolis; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; sisters Edna Peterson of Idaho, Bernice Buth of Minneapolis and Myrtle Weiland of Wisconsin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 4-7 p.m. today in Johnson Mortuary Chapel and noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Assembly of God Church, Beaver Bay. Burial in Sawtooth cemetery, Silver Bay. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Arnette Florene Johnson
Arnette Florene Johnson, 69, of Hibbing died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
She is survived by a son, John (Barbara); a daughter, Norma Jean (Charlie) Johnson; a granddaughter, Keri Lynn Johnson; a brother, Delbert (Marcie) Balzum; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Saturday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing.

Eva M. Eckman
Eva M. Eckman, 97, of Moose Lake died Thursday, March 22, 2001, in Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake.
Eva was born Dec. 25, 1903, in Woodman, Wis., to Frank D. and Helena T. (Gunderson) Hayes. She was married to Harry Eckman on June 18, 1927, in Hopkins, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry in 1955; and twin daughters Phyllis and Francille in 1930.

Eva is survived by daughters Beverly Kuross of Coon Rapids and Grace (Gary) Mapes of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; sons Charles (Shirley) and James (Donna), both of Moose Lake; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 2 until the 3 p.m. service Saturday in Evangelical Covenant Church, Moose Lake. Spring burial in Sunset Memorial cemetery, Moose Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

Arthur A. Albrecht
Arthur A. Albrecht, 89, of Hibbing died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, in Leisure Hills of Hibbing.
Arthur was born Oct. 11, 1911, to Alfred and Matilda (Shenck) Albrecht in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. The family moved to the Silica area when he was a boy.

He was an Army veteran of World War II. On Nov. 29, 1941, he was united in marriage to Ethel Martin in Hibbing. He worked for NOMECO and was a self-employed contractor-plasterer. Arthur was a member of Hibbing VFW Post 8510.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel in 1981; eight sisters; and a brother.

Arthur is survived by sons Ronald (Linda) of Maple Grove, Minn., Larry (Marcy) of Hibbing, Robert of Longview, Texas and Dennis (Cathi) of Hibbing; six grandchildren; and a sister, Laura Rostvold of Stacy, Minn.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Saturday in Range Funeral Home, Hibbing. Burial in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Theodore M. "Ted" Johnson
Theodore M. "Ted" Johnson, 84, of Grand Marais died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, in North Shore Care Center, Grand Marais.
He was born Aug. 3, 1916, to Mathias and Pauline (Aarsvold) Johnson in Grand Marais. Ted was a lifetime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir, ushered and was on the council. He was an active volunteer in the community including the Grand Marais Fire Department. He loved Grand Marais history and was a lifelong resident. He enjoyed gardening and fishing.

He was one of the founders of Johnson's Foods. Ted started working in 1932, and continued working his whole life. He married Hannah on July 24, 1943.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hannah, on July 30, 2000; a sister, Merle Johnson; and a brother, Tumsey.

He is survived by his children, James T. (Beverly) of Grand Marais, Richard M. (Pat) of Superior, Elizabeth I. (Richard) Moulder of Apple Valley, Minn., and Ralph A. (Jane) of Becker, Minn.; a brother, Paul (Ethel) of Grand Marais; sisters Margaret Ranum and Mabel Stoltz, both of Grand Marais; grandchildren Erik, Jennifer, Karyn, Tiffany, Matt, Luke, Scott, Rachel and Gretta; and a great-grandson, Nathan.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Cavallin Funeral Home. Service 11 a.m. Saturday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial in Poplar Grove cemetery, Grand Marais. Memorials preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or the Hospital Auxiliary.

Mario A. Colletti
Mario A. Colletti, 88, of Aurora died Sunday, March 18, 2001, in Arrowhead Health Care Center, Eveleth.
He was born Nov. 20, 1912, in Aurora to Anthony and Jennie (Abbanat) Colletti. He was a graduate of Aurora High School. After high school he attended Virginia Junior College for two years before graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in education. At the university he was a select member of the University Band. On Dec. 31, 1941, he was married to Lila Luoma in Aurora. He served our country in World War II with the Army in the European Theater. After the war he returned to Aurora to help manage the family store until December of 2000. He served as postmaster from 1967-1987, retiring after 20 years of service.

Mario was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Aurora, Aurora American Legion, VFW and was a former member of the Italian American Club. He was an avid sports fan and attended many high school games. He was very active with the Aurora Hoyt Lakes City Band, where he played the trumpet. He was active with community affairs, having a special day dedicated to him on July 31, 1997.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Jennie; his wife, Lila in 1989; a sister, Madeline Urick; and a brother, Francis Colletti.

He is survived by sisters Pearl Maki of Aurora and Antoinette (Charles) Gallant of Palm Beach, Fla; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today with 6 p.m. parish prayers in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Aurora and 9:30 until the 10:30 funeral Mass Wednesday in Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Father Joseph Sirba as celebrant. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery with full military honors accorded by American Legion Post 241 and VFW Post 9702, both of Aurora. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
