Carl M. Urick
Carl M. Urick, 84, of Biwabik died Friday, March 16, 2001, in Arrowhead Health Care Center, Eveleth.
He is survived by his wife, Rosaline; sons Anthony (Louise), Carl E. (Sandra) and Randolph (Amy); three granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday in St. John's Catholic Church, Biwabik, the Rev. Frank Perkovich as celebrant. Inurnment in Lakeside cemetery, Biwabik.

Reinhart N. Nistler
Reinhart N. Nistler, 86, of Aitkin died Monday, April 30, 2001, at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin.
He was born March 23, 1915, in Golva, N.D., to Peter and Agatha (Vetsch) Nistler. On July 21, 1936, Reinhart was united in marriage to Alice Johnson in Golva. In 1948, they moved from Hutchinson to Fleming Township and then Spencer Township in Aitkin County. He was a farmer, logger and carpenter, helping build the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin and the Holy Family Catholic Church in McGregor. He also worked as a custodian for the Aicota Health Care Center.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice on March 14, 1999; brothers Florian and Richard; sisters Betty Ware, Sally Williams and Leona Harry; two grandchildren and his parents.

Reinhart is survived by sons and daughters-in-law LeRoy (Brenda) of McGregor, Terry of McGregor, Thomas (Sandra) of McGregor and Gregory of Minneapolis; daughters and sons-in-law Sandra (Warren) Reich of Aitkin, Joyce (John) Knaak of McGregor, Karen (Ray) Marsyla of McGregor, Judy (Roger) Aker of Aitkin, Margaret (Richard) Ladd of Palisade and Joany (Terry) Benton of Channahon, Ill.; 40 grandchildren; more than 70 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Victor (Darlene) of Hinckley; and a sister and brother-in-law, Rita (Sal) of Cold Springs.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today in McGregor Funeral Home in McGregor, and from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Holy Family Catholic Church, McGregor, the Rev. Howard Eisel officiating. Burial in Woodland cemetery, McGregor.

Pallbearers are John Knaack, Jr., Jim Nistler, Shawn Nistler, Jeffrey Boyer, Adam Ladd, Tony Nistler. Honorary Pallbearers are: Bryan Nistler, Arik Ladd, Terry Nistler, Danny Nistler, Andrew Koehler, Phillip Snyder, Shannon Nistler. Organist is Jo Schnieder. Soloist is Lorena Kelly.

Leslie A. Kastonek
Leslie A. Kastonek, 45, of Nashwauk died Monday, April 30, 2001, in his home.
He was born Jan. 28, 1956, in Grand Rapids to Lester and Delores (Anderson) Kastonek. He grew up and attended school in Nashwauk. On Aug. 12, 1978, he was united in marriage to Jane Ball in Nashwauk. Following marriage, the couple made their home in Nashwauk. He began work with National Steel Pellet Co. in 1974. When that company laid off workers, he attended the Hibbing Vocational Technical Institute and Junior College. He graduated from the Law Enforcement Program and had worked part-time for the Keewatin Police Department and the Itasca County sheriff's posse before being recalled by National Steel Pellet Co. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 2660 of Keewatin and the Nashwauk Lutheran Church. He enjoyed being around his family, going on family vacations, deer hunting with his children, bonfires and fish fries.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Delores in 1997; and his grandmother, Ethel Anderson in 1994.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; a daughter, Amanda Kastonek of Bemidji; a son, Adam Kastonek of Nashwauk; his father, Lester Kastonek of Nashwauk; a sister, Karen (Gene) Skraba of Nashwauk; brothers Al (Carol) Kastonek of Pengilly and Gary Kastonek of Nashwauk; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Range Funeral Home, Hibbing. Burial in Nashwauk cemetery.

Mark A. Acaley
Mark A. Acaley, 25, of Minneapolis and formerly of Stevens Point, was fatally shot Sunday, April 29, 2001, in Seattle.
He was born Oct. 26, 1975, in Aberdeen, S.D., to David and Susan (Pomerenke) Acaley. He graduated from Hibbing High School in 1993 with honors. He attended Ruprecht-Karls-Universitat Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Germany, the summer of 1995. He graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics in May of 1997.

While in high school, he was captain of the high school varsity math team, which regularly place highly in state tournaments. He also was a member of the Hibbing High School varsity Knowledge Bowl team and a member of the Yale Tae Kwon Do Club, serving as its president from 1995 to 1997. While at Yale he also became active with their Appalachian Volunteer Club, which helped with construction of lower-income housing.

While at Stevens Point he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, their Tri-Hi Youth Group and student counselor for National Lutheran Youth conventions. He was also an umpire for youth softball and baseball leagues.

Survivors include his parents, David and Susan of Stevens Point; sisters Michelle (Brody) Rice of Stevens Point and Therese Acaley, currently attending college in Russia; and a brother, B.J., at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He is also survived by maternal grandparents, Norbert and Ruth Pomerenke of Neenah, Wis.; his great-grandmother, Verna Pomerenke of Waupaca; a special friend, "Katee"; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Friday in the Boston Funeral Home, 1649 Briggs St., Stevens Point, Wis. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Trinity Lutheran Church, the Reverends David Maxfield and Kenneth Knutson officiating. Burial in Forest cemetery, Steven Points. In lieu of flowers, memorials are established in Mark's name for the youth groups at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hibbing and Trinity Lutheran Church in Stevens Point.

Jack M. "Cubby" Gornik
Jack M. "Cubby" Gornik went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 30, 2001.
He was born June 25, 1933, in Eveleth to Anton and Theresa (Lovsin) Gornik. Jack served as an altar boy for 14 years at Holy Family Catholic Church in Eveleth. He graduated from Eveleth High School in 1951.

He married Winnifred Krall on Jan. 24, 1953, at Holy Family Catholic Church.

He served in the Army from 1953-1990, including two years in the Army 264th field artillery (atomic cannon), the occupation of Germany during the Korean War (1954-1955), 25 years in the Army National Guard as Sergeant First Class, five years in Ready Reserve and service as a National Guard recruiter, for which he earned a Meritorious Service award.

He was a member of Mesaba Range Post 1172 Veterans of Foreign War in Eveleth. Jack worked for USX at Minntac for 41 years, retiring in 1992. He was an active member of Steelworkers Union 2078, later 1938, serving as treasurer, a grievance man and MSHA inspector. He also served on the safety committee and other union committees.

He also was involved in political campaigns for many DFL candidates. He was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Frank A. Mancina Council 2583. He also was a volunteer for the United Way and was named Volunteer of the Year in 1985. Most recently, Jack was a volunteer at Franklin Elementary in Eveleth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Roderick "Ricky", brothers Anton and Frank; and a sister, Theresa Simetkosky.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Winnifred; sons James (Candy) of Eveleth and Gary (Jean) of Dixon, Ill., daughters Wendy (Rodney) Pfeffer of Duluth, Laurie (Ron) McDowell of Eveleth and Rebecca (Mike) Dall of Iron.; grandchildren Amelia "Amy" and Patrick Gornik, Sarah and Katie McDowell, Preston and Michael Dall, April Anzelc and Justin Closson; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Jack was a loving and caring man, who gave of himself always. He lived for his family and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday with 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary in Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home, Eveleth. Visitation continues 9 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in Resurrection Catholic Church, Eveleth, the Rev. Eamonn Boland as celebrant. Burial with full military honors in the Eveleth cemetery.

Virginia Schwartz
Virginia Schwartz, 80, of Bovey, formerly of Lawrence Lake died Monday, April 30, 2001, in the Itasca Nursing Home in Grand Rapids.
She was born April 6, 1921, in Bovey and had been a lifelong resident of the Bovey area.

Mrs. Schwartz was a homemaker, a member of the Balsam Bible Chapel, the Scenic Seniors and the Balsam Ladies Club.

She is survived by her husband, William; sons William (Sally) of Bovey, Thomas (Cherie) of Bellevue, Wash., and Kenneth (Shelley) of Grand Rapids; daughters Mary Jane (Mike) Elich of Bovey and Alice (Larry) Lien of Bloomington, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Edith Norlander of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Thursday in the Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine.

Leo Dean Gaffaney
Leo Dean Gaffaney, 74, of Silver Bay died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, of complications from lung cancer in the Minnesota Veteran's Home, Silver Bay.
He was born Aug. 4, 1926, in Westport, Minn., to Francis C. Gaffaney and Mary Flannery Gaffaney.

He graduated from St. John's Prep School in Collegeville, Minn., in 1944, at which time he enlisted in the Army Air Force, serving in Germany until his discharge in January 1947.

In August 1947 he married Dolores Wagener in Waconia, Minn., and they resided in Villard, Minn., until moving to Silver Bay in 1956. He was employed by Reserve Mining Co. for eight years, served as an agent for Standard Oil Co. for 12 years, and retired from North Shore Oil Co. in 1988.

Leo "Dean" enjoyed life to the fullest and treasured his family and a myriad of friends. Despite adversity, he had the gift of joy and his droll Irish wit delighted all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dolores; a son, Tim (Denise) of Wausau, Wis., daughters Carmen (John) Cox of Orlando Fla., Patricia (John) Turonie of Cloquet, Teresa (John) Dumais of Duluth and Mary Cragin and son-in-law Tim Cragin of Duluth; thirteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joann Gaffaney of Rapid City, S.D.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Silver Bay. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home. Memorials preferred to Minnesota Veteran's Home, 45 Banks Blvd., Silver Bay, MN 55614.

Robert "Bob" Johnson
Robert "Bob" Johnson, 62, of Minong died Saturday, April 21, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice in Duluth.
He was born March 18, 1939, in Albert Lea, Minn., to Kermit and Mary Jane Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Danny.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; sons John of Lake Nebagamon and Justin (Jennifer) of Duluth; daughters Deborah (Dave) Olson of Iron River, Loann Albertus of Washburn, Cindy (Rusty) Ratliff of Fritch, Texas, Trina Johnson of Superior and Tracie (Tim) VanPuymbrouck of Superior; brothers Ron of Rochester, Minn., Dave of New Jersey, and John, Steve, Floyd, Dale and Jim, all of Grand Rapids, Mich.; sisters Mary Ann Harris of Minong and JoAnn Kremm of Grand Rapids; 18 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Private family services will be at a later date. Arrangements by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.
