Delores Ann Peterson
Delores Ann Peterson, 65, of Bemidji died Sunday, April 22, 2001.
She is survived by daughters Bethany (Dave) Norenberg, twins Anna Adams and Marie (Dennis) Jenkins and Kathy Gehrke; a son, Lyle (Missy) Peterson; numerous grandchildren; three sisters; and two brothers.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Thursday in Cease Family Funeral Home, Bemidji, the Rev. Mike Nelson officiating. Interment in Jones Township cemetery in rural Solway.

Rose A. Kerntz
Rose A. Kerntz, 89, of Ely died Friday, April 27, 2001, in the Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 31, 1911, in Biwabik, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Starin) Hren, and has lived in Ely since the age of 14. On Aug. 6, 1931, she married Frank Kerntz in Ely.

Rose was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Women's Catholic Council, Western Slavonic Association and the Slovenian Ladies Union.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank on May 28, 1961; her son, Jim on Dec. 27, 1998; a brother, Frank Hren; a sister, Margaret Kerntz; and a great-granddaughter, Rachel Emily Kerntz.

Rose is survived by her sons, Terry (Kathy) Kerntz and Frank (Rae Ann) Kerntz, both of Ely; sisters Marion Grewe and Jeanne Polyner, both of Ely, and Pauline Marolt of Chicago; brothers Ignace (Alice) Hren and Vincent (Lillian) Hren, both of Ely; grandchildren Jim (Cindy), Chris, Bob and Tom Kerntz, Valerie (Jim) Hitchcock, Anne (Greg) Mackie, Nancy (Steve) Smrekar, Terry (Jane) Jr., Jeff (Jennifer) and Tim (Michelle) Kerntz, Kristine (Ken) Hegman, and Frank Jr., Brian and Deanna Kerntz; great-grandchildren Pamela and Lisa Kerntz, Jim and Stefanie Hitchcock, Ryan and Angela Mackie, Krystle and Candice Smrekar, Patrick Kerntz and Ashley Hegman.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday with 7 p.m. rosary in Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely. Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Ely, the Rev. Father James Scheuer as celebrant. Vance R. VanBuskirk
Vance R. VanBuskirk, 58, of Cornucopia, Wis., passed away Friday, April 27, 2001, in Memorial Medical Center, Ashland.
He entered into rest after a lengthy illness with his loving wife, Darlene by his side. Born June 14, 1942, in St. Peter, Minn., to Orville and Viola (Rodgers) VanBuskirk, Vance had been a Duluth resident for many years, living in Cornucopia for the past 4 1/2 years. He was a 1960 graduate of Proctor High school and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during the Cuban missile crisis aboard the USS Casa Grande. Vance was owner and operator of Northern Auto Damage Appraisers for more than 19 years until retirement, when he moved to Cornucopia. He married Darlene Tomporowski June 19, 1965, in Proctor. He was a member, deacon, Sunday school teacher and league leader of R.L.D.S. Church, Duluth Branch, and had been a member of the Pequaywan Lake Volunteer Fire Department for several years. Vance loved all outdoor activities.

He was preceded in death by his father, Orville; and step-father, Harlow "Curly" Krueger.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene; sons David (Destiny) of Cornucopia and Dennis (Cherie) of Superior; his mother, Viola Krueger of Hermantown; a brother, Steve (Liz) of Kingsland, Ga.; nieces and nephews; a godchild; and two special grandpuppies, Buster and Timber.
Visitation: 11 a.m. until the 12:30 p.m. service Tuesday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial in the Town of Bell cemetery, Cornucopia. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., Duluth, 624-5745.

Gerstie R. Maki Sandstrom
Gerstie R. Maki Sandstrom, 84, of Grand Rapids died Saturday, April 28, 2001, in the Itasca Nursing Home, Grand Rapids.
Born July 3, 1916, in New York Mills, Minn., she was the daughter of Andrew and Jennie (Fiske) Ala. She was a 1933 graduate of New York Mills High School. She married Lauri Maki on Sept. 19, 1937, in Hibbing. They lived and farmed north of Nashwauk from 1937 until moving to Bovey in 1963. She lived in Bovey until moving to Grand Rapids in 1970 and returned to Bovey in 1981. Following Lauri's death in 1970 she married Bertil "Bert" Sandstrom Nov. 3, 1979, in Pengilly. She had been a medical records secretary for Northland Mental Health for 19 years.

She was a member of the Grand Rapids United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women, a member of the Bovey Women of the Moose, the Grand Rapids VFW Auxiliary, the Itasca Finnish Club and the Swedish Northern Lights Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Jennie Ala; her first husband, Lauri in 1970; her second husband, Bert in 1998; a grandson, David Maki; sisters Ellen Finberg and Vienna Borg; and brothers Edwin and Irwin Ala.

Survivors include her children Evelyn (Ed) Ketola of Duluth and Ed (Linda) Maki of Grand Rapids; grandchildren Carolyn (Dave) Prusak of Esko, Judy (Dave) Miller of Duluth, Laurie (Dan) Turner of Superior, Robin (Tony) Renollet of Grand Rapids and Renee Johnson of Grand Rapids; six great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Grand Rapids United Methodist Church, the Rev. Dennis E. Hier officiating. Interment in Nashwauk cemetery. Arrangements by Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine.

John H. Trenberth
John H. Trenberth, 76, of Hibbing died Saturday, April 28, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Anna "Ann"; sons Jack (Jill), Gary (Teri) and Marty (Vickie); a sister, Jeanne Guimont; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation: 9:30 until the 11:30 Mass of Christian burial Tuesday in St. Leo's Catholic Church, the Rev. Peter Muhich as celebrant. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery at a later date. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Ernest R. Featherstone
Ernest R. Featherstone, 90, of Hibbing died Friday, April 27, 2001, in the University Medical Center-Mesabi.
He was born in Tipton, Iowa, on July 13, 1910, to Charles and Lenora (Modrock) Featherstone. He was a graduate of the Grand Rapids School of Agriculture and had owned and operated Security Service Garage in Hibbing for 41 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Mesaba Lodge 255.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Delia Lorence Featherstone; a foster son, Edward Stupnick; his second wife, Ruth Qualley Featherstone; and his parents.

He is survived by a daughter, Vivianne (Gene) Danz of Annandale, Va.; a son, Terry (Pat) Featherstone of Hibbing; grandchildren Catherine Gaitan of Burnsville, Minn., Char (David) Karpik of Eveleth, Molly Featherstone of Shoreview, Minn., Mary (Tim) Reece of Stockton, N.J., and John (Debora) Danz of Norfolk, Va.; great-grandchildren Marcela, Sydney and Shelby; and a sister, Leona Aaland of Minneapolis.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday in Dougherty Funeral Home and continues 1 until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in First Presbyterian Church, Hibbing, the Rev. Jack Harris officiating. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing. Pallbearers will be Gene Danz, John Danz, David Karpik, Tom Maki, Terry Johnson, Pat Balgaard, Roy Smith, Robert Motherway, Gordon Rue, Robert Lechner, Jeff Hohbach and Tim Reece. Memorials preferred to Northstar Hospice. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Jean Laustrup Stewart
Jean Laustrup Stewart, 84, of Carlton died Friday, April 27, 2001, in the Carlton Nursing Home.
She was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on July 14, 1916, one of seven daughters born to Anthony and Margaret Laustrup. Jean grew up in St. Paul and graduated from Macalester College to pursue a teaching career. During World War II she joined the Red Cross. She married Robert H. Stewart in 1943 and moved to Duluth in 1957. Jean was a substitute teacher at Lester Park Elementary School and later worked for the Duluth Public Library system, becoming a head branch librarian, retiring June 30, 1984, with 17 years of service.

An active member of the First Unitarian Church, Jean was community minded and worked to improve race relations in Duluth in the 1960s and also volunteered for community activities such as the Duluth Folk Festival.

Jean is survived by sons Tony of Sturgeon Lake, Todd (Del) of Hermantown, grandsons Ross, Matt and Ryan (Shawn), and their daughter Taylor; a sister, Peggy Laustrup; a nephew, Mark (Judy) Siegrist; a niece, Jan Siegrist; and grandniece Johanna.
Private family services at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials to honor Jean can be made to Carlton Nursing Home. Arrangements by William-Loebermeier Funeral Home.

Edwin "Jack" Coombe
Edwin "Jack" Coombe, 89, of Eveleth died Friday, April 27, 2001.
Survivors include sons Jack (Kris) Coombe and Craig (Connie) Coombe; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Roy (Katherine) Coombe; sisters Beatrice Sarno and Dorothy Barboni; nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6 until the 7 p.m. service of remembrance Monday in Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home, Eveleth.

Esther Emily Zikmund
Esther Emily Zikmund, 95, of Hibbing died Friday, April 27, 2001.
Survivors include grandchildren Cheryl Zikmund, Beth (Allen) Kluthe, Nyle (Theresa) Zikmund, Barry Zikmund and Amy (Dennis) Rice; a sister, Edith Bachman; six great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews including Joanne Ohmann.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Monday in Grace Lutheran Church, Hibbing. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing.

Paul Babbini
Paul Babbini, 66, of Biwabik died Saturday, April 28, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday in Range Funeral Home, Virginia, with a 7 p.m. rosary service. Visitation continues from 9 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Tuesday in St. John's Catholic Church, Biwabik.

Helen M. Pellinen
Helen M. Pellinen, 88, of Palo died Friday, April 27, 2001, in Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing.
Graveside service: 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Embarrass cemetery. Arrangements by Range Funeral Home of Virginia.

Maudie Marion Staples
Maudie Marion Staples, 77, of Littlefork died Thursday, April 26, 2001, in Falls Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Richard; a son, James (Betty) Staples; daughters Mary Jo (Al) Long and Jeanne Borgen; and a sister, Margaret Schmidt.
Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday in Littlefork Free Church. Arrangements by Green-Larsen Mortuary.

Mayme Rajala
Mayme Rajala, 86, of Osseo, Minn., and Bigfork died Monday, April 16, 2001, in North Ridge Care Center, New Hope, Minn.
She was born to Jennie and Isaac Isaacson Feb. 11, 1915, at Kettle River. She moved to Effie in 1936 and married Hubert Rajala Dec. 24, 1937. She farmed alongside Hub, birthing calves, baling hay and preparing delicious meals for haying crews. She personified the Finnish strength of character, Sisu. She was an active member of the Effie Freidheim Lutheran Church and a member of the ALCW. She moved to the Condor Apartments in Bigfork in 1991 and to Steeple Point in Osseo in 1999.

Her husband, Hubert, preceded her in death.

She is survived by daughters Yvonne (Dennie) Sharp and Sharon (Ed) Reese; grandchildren Kelly (John) Sweigert, Kyle (Patty) Sharp, Jennifer Lundblad (Eric Emmette) and Andy (Kris) Lundblad; great-grandchildren Alex and Sammi Sweigert, Nate and Megan Sharp, and Ben and Hannah Lundblad; Isaacson brothers, Walter, Arnie (Martha), Niilo (Millie), Hugo (Betty) and Waino (Violet); and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Monday in Bigfork Lutheran Church, Bigfork. Memorials preferred to Fine Arts Building Fund, Edge of the Wilderness Community Center, P.O. Box 303 Bigfork, MN 56628.
