Donald R. Gawtry
Donald R. Gawtry, 86, of International Falls died Monday, April 23, 2001, in St Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
He is survived by his wife, Marilee; sons Bruce, Randall and David; and a daughter, Martha Gawtry Landmark.
Service: 2 p.m. today in First Lutheran Church, International Falls. Burial in Fort Snelling National cemetery.

John W. Boyer
John W. Boyer, 86, of Willmar, Minn., died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Rice Memorial Hospital.
John was born Sept. 8, 1914, in Cloquet, to William and Louise (LaPierre) Boyer. He grew up in Cloquet and graduated from Cloquet High School in 1932. On June 15, 1936, John was united in marriage to Anne M. Siercks in Cloquet.

He then worked for Western Union for 20 years, during which time he also was the American Red Cross representative who notified families whose loved ones were killed during the war.

In 1952, he was appointed city clerk and assessor for Cloquet. Following his retirement in 1976, he served on the city council for 12 years. While living in Cloquet, he was a member of the Moose, serving as its treasurer. In 1996, John and Anne moved to Willmar.

John enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing poker and working with civic and community organizations. He had served on the WLSSD board in Duluth. As the kids were growing up and after, John and Anne looked forward to their weekly evenings out dancing. John also enjoyed woodworking with his son, David. He was especially proud of his family.

John was baptized and a member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Cloquet, where he served as finance director and trustee. He had been a member of the Church of St. Mary since moving to Willmar.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anne in Oct. 2000; a son, David; and sisters Margaret Boyer, Viola Olson, Helen Novosel and Frances Leon.

John is survived by his children, John (Caryl) Boyer Jr. of Tucson, Ariz., Robert (Linnea) Boyer of Roseville, Minn., Carol M. Boyer of Minneapolis, Richard (Vicky) Boyer of Stoneville, N.C., and Cherie (Les) Heitke of Willmar; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, William Boyer Jr. of Cloquet; a sister, Rose (Bob) Carlberg of Duluth; and daughter-in-law, Chris Boyer of Willmar.
Visitation: 2 until the 3 p.m. Mass of Christian burial today in the Church of St. Mary, Willmar. The Rev. Father Joe Steinbeisser as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements by Harvey Anderson Funeral Home, Willmar.

Delores M. Anderson
Delores M. Anderson, 70, of Cloquet died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in the Cloquet Community Hospital.
Delores was born July 31, 1930, in Cloquet to Emil L. and Tilda S. Tuura. She grew up in Cloquet and graduated from the Cloquet High School in 1948. She also attended the University of Minnesota Duluth. She was employed at Diamond Brands, Northwest Paper Co. and for several years she owned and operated Hecter's Restaurant in Cloquet. On July 15, 1967, she married Robert G. Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her father, Emil L. Tuura; her brother Jack E. Tuura; and her infant daughter, Roberta.

Delores is survived and dearly loved by her husband, Robert G. (Bob); her mother, Tilda S. Tuura of Cloquet; her children, Barry (Mary) Hintz of Esko, Leslie (David) Douglas of Carlton, Scott R. Anderson of Duluth, Thomas W. (Terri Maki) Hintz of Grand Rapids, Sara (Greg) Conner of Duluth, Scott C. (Nancy) Hintz of Champlain and Robert H. (Gail) Anderson of Cloquet; and nine grandchildren.

Herman J. "Hermie" Norby
Herman J. "Hermie" Norby, 71, of Stacy, Minn., died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; sons Jeffrey Herman and Douglas; daughters Karen Jean, Krystal Violet, Kathy, Carol and Sharon Norby; two brothers; two sisters; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 4-6 p.m. today in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Aurora and noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Aurora. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery, Aurora.

Jane C. Edman
Jane C. Edman, 77, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, in her residence in Mission, Texas.
She was born in Cloquet on Dec. 11, 1923, daughter of Hanford and Bernice Cox of Cloquet. She attended Cloquet schools, graduating from Cloquet High School in 1941. She attended and graduated from Stephens College in Missouri and later received a degree from Superior State Teachers College. She taught in elementary schools in several places prior to her position in Hayward. She retired from teaching in Hayward.

She and her husband, Clifford Edman, during their 57 years of marriage, lived in Cloquet and Duluth and in various other places, including many years at Round Lake in the Hayward area. After retirement, she and her husband lived in Arkansas and then moved to Mission in 1983 and had resided there since. They rotated homes each year from winters in Mission to Duluth in the summer months.

In addition to her husband, survivors include sisters Ruth Hammerbeck of Alexandria, Va., and May Saim of Cloquet; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: is pending. Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission, Texas, is in charge of all arrangements.
Laurel Ann Gatheridge
Laurel Ann Gatheridge, 50, Grand Rapids, died peacefully Feb. 17, 2001, in her home.
She was born Oct. 2, 1950, in Hallock, Minn., to Raymond and Joan (Bengtson) Gatheridge and moved to Grand Rapids as a child. Laurel graduated from Grand Rapids High School in May of 1968. She then attended Hibbing Vo-Tech, receiving her laboratory technician degree, and moved to Rochester, Minn., to work at the Mayo Clinic. She also received her degree in horse showmanship and horse training at Waseca (Minn.) Vo-Tech.

She then moved to Indiana to work on a horse ranch as a trainer. In the late '70s, she moved to Nocona, Texas, where she worked on several courses and received her X-ray technician certificate. She worked at Nocona General Hospital as a lab and X-ray tech until moving back to Grand Rapids in 1992. She worked at the Itasca Clinic and most recently at the New Spirit Women's Clinic as a lab and X-ray tech. She was also active in the Itasca Kennel Club.

She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Gatheridge in 1982; and a brother, Douglas Gatheridge in 1985.

She will be sadly missed by her beloved dogs, Shiloh, Rosie and Be; her mother, Joan Gatheridge; and brother, Richard Gatheridge, both of Grand Rapids; grandmother Mary Gatheridge of Hallock; nieces Cathy (Steve) Mann of Grand Rapids, Chris (Glen) Mapes of Minneapolis and Cari Gatheridge of Grand Rapids; very special nephews Cody and Jace Mann and Dale, Jeffery, Spencer and Carter Mapes; and a very special friend, Mary Lee Gatheridge-Raley.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Thursday in Grand Rapids United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dennis Hier officiating. Arrangements are by Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, (218) 326-4000.

Lydia M. Miller
Lydia M. Miller, 93, of Grand Marais died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, in North Shore Hospital.
She was born May 19, 1907, to William and Ida (Saari) Salo in Kiikka, Finland. In 1910, she moved with her family to the Hibbing area. She graduated from Hibbing High School, attended Hibbing Junior College and graduated from Gustavus-Adolphus College in 1928. She moved to Balaton, Minn., where she taught school for a short time and married Alfred Miller in 1929. They lived in Balaton until 1949, when they moved to Poplar Lake on the Gunflint Trail.

Alfred preceded her in death in 1976, and she moved in to Grand Marais in 1985. Lydia was a member of First Baptist Church in Grand Marais.

Lydia is survived by sisters-in-law, Jennie Salo of Hibbing and Vera Salo of Indianapolis; a nephew, Bob Salo of Florida; and a niece, Sandra Jorio of Indianapolis.
Service: 2 p.m. March 3, 2001, in First Baptist Church, Grand Marais. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery, Grand Marais. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Richard E. Backman
Richard E. Backman, 73, of Chisholm died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia "Gea"; sons Ted Mockey, Kevin (Janet) and Alan (Carla); daughters Mary Johnson, Debbie (Bob) Fiorini and Leah Backman; eight grandchildren; two brothers; four sisters; and many relatives.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Faith Lutheran Church, Chisholm. Inurnment in Chisholm cemetery. Arrangements by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Chisholm.

Bonnie (Tweet) Williams
Bonnie (Tweet) Williams, 51, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, in Montana.
Bonnie was born March 16, 1949, to Gilbert and Lucille (Kruger) Tweet in Grand Rapids. She worked in the Lincoln Hotel and attended Alcoholics Anonymous.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Williams of Duluth; a son, Bradley J. Tweet; her father, Gilbert Tweet; and a brother, Thomas Tweet.

Survivors include her children, Brent H. Tweet of Chisholm, Rhoda K. Bentley of Duluth and James D. Bentley of Saginaw; brothers Timothy (Cynthia) Tweet of Grand Rapids and Glenn Tweet; sisters Sally (Michael) Stram of Pengilly and LuAnn (Michael) Pistilli of Hibbing; her special friend, Alan Jarvis of Duluth; and grandchildren Seth Bloomquist and Michael and Savannah Mitchell.
Visitation: 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service Thursday in Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes Inc., Foley Chapel. Interment in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes Inc., Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St., Duluth, 624-4838.

Aili Helmi Juola
Aili Helmi Juola, 89, of Floodwood died Thursday, March 8, 2001, in Villa Vista Nursing Home in Cromwell.
She was born May 7, 1911, in South Range, Mich., to Isaac and Anna (Palokangas) Jarvi. She grew up and attended school in Menahga. Aili married Eino Juola Oct. 6, 1940, in Cedar Valley.

She was a member of Apostolic Lutheran Church.

Aili is survived by her husband of 60 years, Eino, of Villa Vista Nursing Home; sons Robert (Hazel) of Floodwood and James (Jane) Juola of Ramsey; a daughter, Gloria Kyllonen, of Ramsey; brothers Reino (Ellen) Santi and Eino (Signe) Santi, both of Menahga and Richard (Ida) Santi of Duluth; a sister, Martha Coponen, of Atlantic Mine, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet, and noon until the 1 p.m. service Sunday in Big Lake Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church, Big Lake Road, Cloquet. Amelia F. Anderson Blake
Amelia F. Anderson Blake, 99, formerly of Coleraine and Spring Valley, Minn., died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, in Leisure Hills Health & Rehab, Grand Rapids.
She is survived by her son, Charles A. (Donna) Anderson, of Grand Rapids; her stepson, Virgil (Sue) Blake, of McGrath; grandchildren Steven (Angela) Anderson of Grand Rapids, Brian (Lynda) Anderson of Lake In The Hills, Ill., and Jennifer Anderson of Oak Harbor, Wash.; step grandchildren Michael (Shelley) Ewen and Gregory (Melissa) Ewen, both of Grand Rapids, and Deborah Ewen of Arcata, Calif.; great-great-grandchildren Sydney, Coleton and Bohden Anderson, all of Grand Rapids; and her sister, Myrtle Davenport, of Des Moines, Iowa.
Visitation: 3 until the 4 p.m. service Monday in Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine, the Rev. Stephen B. Kundson officiating. Interment in Spring Valley at a later date. Arrangements by Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine.
