Mary E. Doran, 85, of Grand Rapids died Wednesday, March 7, 2001.
Mary is survived by sisters Anna May Connor, Katherine Berkeland, Dorothy (Red) Best, Patricia (Bill) Solien, Margaret Schanbachler and Loretta (Frank) Johnson; a brother, Daniel (Deanna) Doran; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 4 until the 6 p.m. wake-prayer service Monday in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. Service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home.

Eve S. Blankenburg
Eve S. Blankenburg, 91, a pioneer on the Gunflint Trail died Thursday, March 8, 2001, in Grand Marais in North Shore Care Center.
She was born into a Russian family in Butler, Pa., lived in Aurora in her early years and was a graduate of Duluth State Teachers College. She was married to Russell E. Blankenburg in 1931.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983.

Eve is survived by her daughter, Donna Stearns; granddaughters Hilary Craig and Tracey Stearns; her sister, Maryon Campbell; and a great-grandson, Stearns Weil.
No service at this time. Those who wish may make contributions in her memory to the Gunflint Trail Ambulance or to North Shore Care Center, Grand Marais. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Everett C. Johnson
Everett C. Johnson, 91, of Aitkin passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2001, in Westwood Health Care Center in St. Louis Park.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Bethel Lutheran Church, Aitkin, the Rev. Gunnar Salmonson officiating. Burial in Diamond Lake cemetery, Farm Island Township, Aitkin County. Arrangements by Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.

Miles L. Ramey
Miles L. Ramey, 78, of Hibbing died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Leisure HIlls of Hibbing.
Survivors include a son, Russell Diercks; daughters Vivian Ramey, Kathy Crowe, Patty Vake, Sharon Blodgett, Mary Jo Marsh; a brother, Jerry Ramey; a sister, Janette Powers; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Service: 11 a.m. Monday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing, which is handling arrangements.

Teresa "Terry" Faith Needham-Tjaden
Teresa "Terry" Faith Needham-Tjaden, 46, of Cloquet, formerly of Duluth, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, as a result of an automobile accident.
She was born May 26, 1955, in Two Harbors to Thomas and Frances (Synkiew) Needham. Terry graduated from Morgan Park High School in Duluth and obtained her law enforcement degree from Fond du Lac College. She then worked at Younkers, formerly Glass Block, in security. She was the owner of Home Enchantments in Duluth.

Terry was very involved in foster care. She was an extremely generous and giving person to all who knew her. Terry was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Anthony Plucinak in 1998.

Terry is survived by her husband, James "Jim"; a daughter, Tamara Plucinak of Cloquet; a stepdaughter, Angela Lopez of Oregon; step-grandchildren Alex and Alicia Lopez; her sister, Tamara Needham, and her brother, Thomas Needham, both of Cloquet; her best friend Dianne Coning of Esko; a very close cousin, Judy Belcastro of Wrenshall; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in Wefelmeyer-Handevidt Funeral Home, 1506 Washington Ave., Cloquet, (218) 879-6741. Visitation continues at 9 until the 10 a.m. service Wednesday in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 102 Fourth Street, Cloquet. Private family interment in Calvary cemetery, Duluth.

Hazel V. Mickelson
Hazel V. Mickelson, 84, of Cloquet died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in the Carlton Nursing Home.
She was born Feb. 7, 1917, in Sandstone to Andrew and Annie (Heinonen) Hillman. She lived in several areas including Cascade, Finlayson and Superior. She married John Mickelson on May 14, 1938, in Cloquet. During the 1950s Hazel was a music teacher of the accordion, piano and guitar. During the 1960s she was a nurse's aide at the Cloquet and Carlton Nursing Homes and during the 1970s and '80s, she did dog grooming.

She was a member of TOPS and KOPS and enjoyed arts, crafts and music.

Hazel was preceded in death by a sister, Klyda Wickstrom, and brothers Glen, Ted, Wallace and Johnny Hillman.

She is survived by her husband, John C. Sr.; sons John (Judith) Jr. of Oseola, Wis., Milton (Joan) of Ashland, Wis., and William (Anita) of Petaluma, Calif.; sisters Zelma Gratzek of Cloquet and Hulda VanWinkle of Helena, Mont.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Leroy Thomas Thieling
Leroy Thomas Thieling, 76, a lifelong Mahtowa area resident died Sunday, June 3, 2001, in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital.
He was born Dec. 23, 1924, in Barnum, the son of Fred and Anna (Graupman) Thieling. He was married to Isabella "Minnie" Johnson. Leroy was a longtime employee of Potlatch, retiring after 27 years of service, and was a member of the Potlatch Quarter Century Club.

He enjoyed cooking, family get-togethers, gardening, fishing, working on his tractors and hobby farming. He was fond of animals, especially his cat, Miss Kitty, and his hobby farm cattle.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie, on Dec. 10, 1997; his parents; brothers Louis and Fred Thieling; and sisters, Ruth Rice and Gertrude Skoglund.

Leroy is survived by a stepson, Steven (Sharon) Mohelski of Barnum; a brother, Gilbert (Eileen) Thieling of Barnum; his sisters, Theodora Williams and Marjorie (Enard) Paulson of Barnum, and Cecelia Bowman of California; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Northland Funeral Home, Mahtowa. Entombment will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Sunrise Memorial Park Mausoleum, Hermantown. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home. (To sign the guest book online, see www.legacy.com)

Donald Raymond Christiansen
Donald Raymond Christiansen, 79, of Grand Marais died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in the North Shore Hospital in Grand Marais.
He was born April 20, 1922, in Minneapolis.
Visitation: 6-9 p.m. Tuesday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Grand Marais. Service at 2 p.m Wednesday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Grand Marais. Burial in Poplar Grove cemetery, Grand Marais.

Beverly J. Anderson
Beverly J. Anderson, 69, of Cloquet passed away Thursday, May 31, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital with her family at her side.
Beverly was born July 7, 1931, to Elbridge "Gary" and Pearl (Leseman) Follett.

She was preceded in death by two infant sisters; daughters Deborah and Sheryl; her parents; two nephews; and aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her children, Shiloh (Rodney) Ogima of Duluth, Keith (Tracy) Anderson of Barnum and Tara (Jamie) Hunter of Cloquet; grandchildren Jake and Joshua Ogima, Jesse and Alisha Anderson, and Skylar and Blaize Hunter; brothers Donald (Katherine), Elmer (Karen), Robert and Jim Follett; a sister, Helen (Bill) McCullough; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family will receive friends 2 until the 3 p.m. memorial service Tuesday in Wefelmeyer-Handevidt Funeral Home, 1506 Washington Ave., Cloquet, (218) 879-6741. Private family interment.

Walter W. Maijala
Walter W. Maijala, 83, of Tamarack died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
Walter was born March 18, 1918, in Tamarack, the son of Henry and Hilma (Kallio) Maijala. He grew up in the Tamarack and Lawler area and attended the Rice Lake School. He farmed and logged in the area all of his life. He married Ruth E. Swedberg on Nov. 9, 1940, in Duluth. For many years he traveled the country at harvest time with his threshing machine.

He served for many years on the Tamarack Co-op Board, was a lifetime member of the Tamarack Lutheran Church and he also served as the sexton for the Salo cemetery for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers; and a sister.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Maijala of Tamarack; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Maxine Maijala of Tamarack; a daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and John Smith of Superior; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Ailie and Roland Otterson of Cloquet; and a brother and sister-in-law, Arnold and Ruth Maijala of McGregor.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Holy Family Catholic Church in McGregor, the Rev. Clifford Johnson officiating. Burial in Salo cemetery. Arrangements are with the McGregor Funeral Home in McGregor.

Verner M. Nelson
Verner M. Nelson, 78, of Sandstone died Friday, June 1, 2001, in North Memorial Hospice Care in Minneapolis.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in Methven Funeral Home in Sandstone and from 1 until the 2 p.m. service Wednesday in Evangelical Free Church, Sandstone. Arrangements by Methven Funeral Home, (320) 245-2376.
