Sherman David Benson
Sherman David Benson, 86, of Grand Marais died Monday, May 28, 2001, in the North Shore Hospital, Grand Marais.
He was born Feb. 7, 1915, to Andrew and Clara Mathilda Benson in Clear Lake, Wis. He grew up on a farm in Clear Lake with his 11 brothers and sisters, graduated from high school and attended college in River Falls.

He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps camps for three years; worked with his brother in a lumber yard; and entered the Navy in 1942, serving in the Pacific. He married Millie Wood April 1, 1947. Sherman and his brother, Harold, purchased Midway Service in 1946, operating it until his retirement in 1978.

He was a member of First Congregational Church in Grand Marais, a 50-year member of both the American Legion and Masonic Lodge, a charter member of the Cook County Hospital Board, Lions Club and other civic organizations.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, swimming, watching sports, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards with friends, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and several other special family members.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred "Millie" of Grand Marais; sons Buckley and Steve (Yvonne), both of Grand Marais; a daughter, Tracy (Paul) Goupil of Coon Rapids; a sister, Esther (Bill) Avery; grandchildren Talbrey and Kelston; and many nieces and nephews.
Service: 11 a.m. Thursday in First Congregational Church, Grand Marais. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery. Memorials preferred to the North Shore Hospital and Care Center, and American Legion Veterans Memorial Fund. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors.

Elmer Conrad Kittelson
Elmer Conrad Kittelson, 79, of International Falls died Monday, May 28, 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie; a son, Gary; a daughter, Gail (Wayne) Pelland; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Thursday in First Lutheran Church. Full military rites accorded. Interment in Lindford cemetery. Arrangements by Green-Larsen Mortuary, Inc. of International Falls.

Ralph W. Thurlby
Ralph W. Thurlby, 66, of Swatara, Minn., died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in the Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, LaDonna; children Craig, Redgenia Leone and Kyle; grandchildren Kane, Zack, Maisie, Angelina, Brandon and Creasha; a great-granddaughter, Lilly; a brother, LeRoy; and sisters Viola Turner, Pearl Harrison, Phylis Nelson and Fay Nicklos.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday in the Libbey Funeral Home. Service at 1 p.m. Friday in Hill City Baptist Church. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Swatara. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, (218) 326-4000.

Justine Spunner Kerfoot
Gunflint Trail pioneer
Justine Spunner Kerfoot, 94, of Gunflint Lake died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in the North Shore Hospital in Grand Marais.
She was born Nov. 6, 1906, in Barrington, Ill., was raised in northern Illinois, and attended Northwestern University. In 1927, she and her mother bought Gunflint Lodge, a small fishing camp consisting of three small log cabins and a store. Gunflint became her lifetime project as she "grew" the resort, raised her family, became a leader in the community, authored three books and in her retirement years explored the world over.

Justine is survived by her three children, Bruce Kerfoot, Pat Shoffner and Sharon Miller; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services: 2 p.m. Tuesday on the shore of Gunflint Lake at Gunflint Lodge. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Gunflint Trail Rescue Squad. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home, Grand Marais.

D. Helen Johnson
D. Helen Johnson of Phoenix died Monday, May 28, 2001, in her home.
She was born Oct. 27, 1926, in Cloquet to Edward and Rose Kinnunen.

Her husband, Clarence "Curly" Johnson preceded her in death in 1995.

Survivors include her daughters, Delaine, Debra, Rebecca Hill, Ramona Kako and Barbara; sons Glenn, Daryl, Bradley and Tim; sisters Ruth Fredrickson and Jane Huima; a brother, Fred Kinnunen; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements by Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary of Scottsdale, Ariz. Interment in Redwood Memorial cemetery, Dewey, Ariz.

Lawrence "Bud" E. LeSavage
Lawrence "Bud" E. LeSavage, 90, of Cloquet passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home, Duluth.
He was born May 22, 1911, in Cloquet to George and Anna (Laskowski) LeSavage.

He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVonne; brothers Henry, Jack, Edmond, Ramond; and a sister, Lillian.

Lawrence is survived by his son, Graf (Jill) of Duluth; grandchildren Briggs, Bauer and Gates; sisters Vivian Arnaud of Crown Point, Ind., and Phyllis Griffin of Cloquet; and nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends from 9:30 until the 10 a.m. Memorial Mass of Christian burial Saturday in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 102 Fourth St., Cloquet. Private interment. Arrangements by Wefelmeyer-Handevidt Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Cloquet, (218) 879-6741.

George P. Stolle
George P. Stolle, 97, of Finlayson died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in Pine Medical Center, Sandstone.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today and continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Peace Lutheran Church, Finlayson. Burial in Peace Lutheran cemetery. Arrangements by Methven Funeral Home, Sandstone.

Morgan A. Wagner
Morgan A. Wagner, 5 months, of Virginia died accidentally Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in Hoyt Lakes.
She is survived by her parents, Robert and Lisa (Erickson) Wagner; a brother, Jordan; sisters Taylor and Ashley; her grandparents and great-grandparents; and numerous other relatives.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today with recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m. in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Visitation continues 8:30 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Hoyt Lakes.

Harold S. Nelson
Harold S. Nelson, 84, of Hill City died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in his home.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice; a daughter, Judy (Rick) Vondemkamp; sons Harold Jr. (Sheilah) and Bernot (Nancy); a sister; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Saturday in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cohasset and also at noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Emmaus Lutheran Church, Bloomington, Minn. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home.

Edna J. Johnson, 84, of Cloquet passed away Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Cloquet Nursing Home.

Margaret M. Moberg
Margaret M. Moberg, 89, of Cotton died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Arrowhead Senior Living Community in Eveleth.
Margaret was born Feb. 20, 1912, to Henry and Jennie (Lindberg) Moberg in Duluth. She was the sixth of 12 children and was a graduate of Cotton High School. Following high school, Margaret and her sister Gertrude moved to Milwaukee, where she worked as a private housekeeper for several families until her retirement. She moved back to Duluth and lived in the Duluth and Proctor area for more than 20 years with her sister Gertrude.

Margaret loved to care for her family and was known as "Auntie Margaret" to all. She will be remembered for her gift of talk and sharing of old-time stories.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Gertrude Huber, Elizabeth Erickson, and Dora Bloomquist; brothers Bernard, Walter, Harry, Theodore and Ernest; and two siblings in infancy.

Survivors include her brother, Carl (Dorothy) Moberg of Highland, Ind.; nephews Rodney (Marie) Moberg and Henry (Shirley) Moberg, both of Cotton, and Robert (Nancy) Bloomquist of Minneapolis; nieces Sheila (Jack) Schulte of Duluth, Eileen (Wayne) Jensen of Hibbing, Claudia (Joe) O'Keefe of West Salem, Wis., Amelia (Daryl Krone) Moberg of Cotton, Nancy Harper of Texas, and Jennie Moberg of Minneapolis; and 13 grand-nieces and nephews.
Memorial service:1 p.m. Monday in Cotton Community Church, the Rev. Tim Smith officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery, Duluth. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Jennie Ackerman, 92, of Aitkin died Thursday, May 17, 2001, in the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin.
Visitation: one hour prior to the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in First Lutheran Church in Aitkin. Arrangements by Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.

James H. Denzel, 63, of Grand Rapids died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in his home.
Jim is survived by a son, Daniel Denzel; a daughter, Angel Yost; a brother, Mike Stupar; a sister, Joan Odden; and two grandchildren.

Elizabeth S. Abbey, 76, of Hibbing died Friday, May 18, 2001, in her home.
Survivors include a son, Thomas H. Abbey; daughters Vicki (Richard) Murray, Jonelle Abbey, Cinda (Terry) Samsa and Elizabeth (Daniel) Griffiths; three brothers 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 10:30 until the 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in St. Leo's Catholic Church. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery.
