George Henry Hibler
George Henry Hibler, 88, of Grand Rapids died Monday, May 14, 2001, in his home.
George was born March 3, 1913, in Chicago. He grew up in the Chicago area with sisters Hazel and Florence, and a brother, Doug, who all preceded him in death. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps camps and also farmed in Minnesota. Around 1935 he moved to Ely. He lived with Bill Berglund, the original owner of Pine Island on Knife Lake. On Oct. 13, 1938, he was united in marriage to Agnes O. Larson at Methodist Church in Ely. He then moved to Canadian Border Lodge. He worked as a carpenter and was a foreman for Galbraith Construction Co., when the city of Babbitt was built. In September 1953 he was employed as the Superior National Forest carpenter and worked at the Ely Service Center. He continued working there until his retirement in June 1976. In 1984 he and Agnes moved to Grand Rapids. Agnes died on March 30, 1992.

George was a member of the YMCA and a much-loved member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his daughters Lois Bendix of Grand Rapids and Judith (Jim) Strege of Maple Grove, Minn.; a son, Karl (Debbe) Hibler of Plymouth, Minn.; grandchildren Linda (Janek) Chodnicki of Shakopee, Minn., Terri Laugen of Minnetonka, Minn., Jacob Strege of Albertville, Minn., Jason Strege of International Falls and Jessica Strege of Bozeman, Mont.; and a great-grandson, Ryan Laugen of Shakopee.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. Service at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, the Rev. Michael L. Eckert officiating. Burial in Bagley City cemetery, Bagley, Minn. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Victor M. Heinen
Victor M. Heinen, 73, of Grand Rapids died Saturday, May 12, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael; brothers Edward, Ben and Andrew; and sisters Barbara and Sophia.

Victor is survived by his wife, Beverly; sons Daniel and Wayne, both of Grand Rapids; daughters Vicki Bedard of Sioux Falls, S.D., Patti Olson of Cohasset and Lori Drewes of International Falls; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Lee Heinen; and sisters Maryann Mills and Liddy Peterson.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Libbey Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation continues 11 until the noon Mass of Christian burial Tuesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Grand Rapids. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, 326-4000.

Celia Serafia Hildebrandt
Celia Serafia Hildebrandt, 89, of North Branch, Minn., formerly of Motley and Finlayson, entered eternal rest Saturday, May 12, 2001.
She is survived by her sisters, Julia McKay, Lillie Schroenrock, Alma (Harold) Wichner and Ruth (George) Brabec; a brother, Nestor (Edith) Korpi; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today and continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in St. John's Lutheran Church, Finlayson. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

Fanni E . Rahkola
Fanni E . Rahkola, 92, of Virginia died Thursday, April 26, 2001, in the Arrowhead Health Care Center in Virginia.
She was born June 7, 1908, to Hekki and Johanna (Alatalo) Lankila in Kalajoki, Finland. Fanni was united in marriage with Kalle Matti Rahkola in Kalajoki, Finland. The family immigrated to the United States in 1954 and settled in Toivola. They later moved to Iron and to Virginia in 1986. She had been a homemaker. She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the American-Finnish Civic Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kalle, in 1975; four brothers; two sisters; a daughter-in-law; two sons-in-law; three infant children and her parents.

Surviving are a son, Martti Rahkola of Eveleth; daughters Maila Esterberg of Toivola, Mirja Mattonen of Virginia and Tuula (Bruce) Hill of Glendale Heights, Ill.; grandchildren Diane Esterberg, Dean (Julie Tomaczak) Esterberg, Mike (Julie) Esterberg, Mark (Glenda) Mattonen, Allan (Nancy) Mattonen, Jeff (Jamie) Hill, Stephanie Hill and Jonathan Hill; great-grandchildren Brandon and Kayla, Nina and Natalie; and a brother, Olli Lankila, of Kalajoki, Finland.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Virginia. Burial in Greenwood cemetery, Virginia. Arrangements by Range Funeral Home of Virginia.

Dorothy Louise (Matz) Malmquist
Dorothy Louise (Matz) Malmquist, 83, of International Falls died of cancer Thursday, April 26, 2001, in Ely.
She was born in Waseca, Minn., to William and Mary (Erwin) Matz Dec. 21, 1917. She graduated from Waseca High School, received her teaching certificate from New Richland Normal School and taught in Waseca County until her marriage to Elmer Malmquist on Oct. 16, 1937. Dorothy and Elmer lived in Waseca, International Falls, Seattle, Highmore, S.D., and Ericsburg, Minn.

Dorothy was active in the Ericsburg Mission Church and then at Evangelical Covenant Church in International Falls, where she was a member for many years. She was active in the 4-H program in South Dakota and in Ericsburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer in 1990; and a brother, James Matz.

She is survived by daughters Suzanne (Ronald) Grable of Highmore, S.D., and Janice (Lee) Tessier of Winton, MN; a son, David (Barbara) Malmquist of Tucson, Ariz.; sisters Marian (Don) Rocek and Polly (Herb) Streitz; brothers Theodore (Alice), Vinton (Myrtle) and John (Agnes) Matz; a sister-in-law, Joan Matz; a brother-in-law, Dale (Olive) Lookabill; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in Green-Larsen Mortuary Inc. Service 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Evangelical Covenant Church. Interment in the Ericsburg cemetery. Memorials preferred to Evangelical Covenant Church, International Falls. Arrangements by Green-Larsen Mortuary, Inc.

Roselle M. Lavoy
Roselle M. Lavoy, 79, of Carlton, formerly of the Esko area, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital.
She was born Feb. 27, 1922, in Thomson Township to Joseph Jr. and Lempi (Mattson) Juntunen. She was the valedictorian of the 1939 class of Esko High School. She worked for J.C. Penney Co. in Minneapolis for 25 years and moved to Cloquet after retiring in 1987. She moved to Carlton Nursing Home in 1999. She was a member of Apostolic Lutheran Church in Esko and the Esko Senior Citizens. She enjoyed classical music, bowling, gardening, cooking and loved her Siamese cat, Shadow. Roselle was an avid baseball fan, especially of the Minnesota Twins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers Clifford, Robert and Gordon.

Roselle will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by brothers Glenn Juntunen, the Rev. Wayne (Patti) Juntunen and James Juntunen, all of Esko; sisters Luella (Edwin) Bergstedt of Cloquet and Joyce Wilson of Kennewick, Wash.; an aunt, Ailie Mattson; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members; special friends, and the special staff and friends at Carlton Nursing Home.

William Carl Oscar Janke
William Carl Oscar Janke, 84, of Alborn passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in Cloquet Community Memorial Convalescent Nursing Care Section.
He was born Oct. 21, 1916, in New Prague, Minn., to William and Augusta (Dallmann) Janke. He married Dorothy Lind on Feb. 28, 1943. William served in the medical attachment of the Army Air Corps from 1942-1946. He worked for the DM&IR; Railway for 28 years. He was a brakeman and retired in 1979 as yardmaster. He also was a logger and a farmer.

William was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Saginaw and a member of the Cloquet American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Carl Amborn; a sister, Elva Janke; and a brother, Harvey.

William is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy; sons Harold (Margaret) and William E. (Wendy), both of Alborn, Howard (Ruth) of Esko and Ellwyn (Delores) of Saginaw; daughters Joan (Myron) Ugstad, Lois (John) Larson and Alice (Raymond) Larson, all of Alborn; brothers Howard (Esther) Amborn of Minneapolis and Ronald (Karen) Amborn of Saginaw; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Selma Arbuckle of Saginaw; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Sunday in St. John's Lutheran Church, 4893 Independence Rd., Saginaw. Interment in St. John's cemetery, Saginaw. Arrangements by Barr Brothers-Handevidt Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cloquet, (218) 879-4636.

Elizabeth M. "Betty" Guyer
Elizabeth M. "Betty" Guyer, 76, former Taconite resident died Thursday, April 26, 2001, in the Itasca Nursing Home, Grand Rapids.
Born Oct. 24, 1924, in Hibbing, she was the daughter of Aristide "Bud" and Myrtle (Dickovich) Boudreau. She married Elwin "Cotta" Guyer on Oct. 12, 1947. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Taconite, the Taconite American Legion Auxiliary, the Bovey Women of the Moose and Taconite Elderberry Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elwin "Cotta" Guyer in 1993; a daughter, Nanette Kilham; a grandson, Travis "Trapper" Thorson; and a brother, Buddy "Bud" Boudreau.

Survivors include daughters Betty (Lee) Finke of Taconite and Renee (Stephen) Thorson of Austin, Minn.; sons Guy (Jean) Guyer of Swan Lake and William "Cotton" (Sally "Chick") Guyer of Marble; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gordon Boudreau of Chisholm.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Sunday with parish prayers at 7:30 p.m. in Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine, where service will be 10 a.m. Monday, the Rev. Father Lloyd Mudrak officiating. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine.

William J. Smith Sr.
William J. Smith Sr., 93, of Cloquet passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in his home.
He was born May 19, 1907, in Cloquet to Joseph and Charlotte (Houle) Smith. William attended schools in Tower, Odanah, and also Sacred Heart and Leach Schools in Cloquet. He worked for Great Northern Railroad, Balsam Wall Construction, C.C. Camp in Gheen, Minn., and Diamond Match Paper Mill. William was an ambulance driver for Fond du Lac Reservation and he was also a foster grandparent for the Fond du Lac preschool.

William loved hunting, archery and storytelling.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn on Aug. 21, 1981; a son, Sherman on Sept. 26, 1999; two grandsons; his parents; and 13 siblings.

William is survived by a son, William Pat (Aileen) Smith of Cloquet; daughters Beverly Gitzen and Roberta Pelofske, both of Cloquet, and Mary Koski of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today with 6 p.m. rosary service led by Deacon Terry Twomey in the Wefelmeyer Funeral Home, 1506 Washington Ave., Cloquet, (218) 879-6741. Visitation continues 10 until 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in Queen of Peace Church, 102 Fourth St., Cloquet. The Rev. Father Kenton Sailstad officiating. Pallbearers will be William's great-grandchildren, Pat Hicks, Eric Smith, Jason Korby, Brian Knezevich, Matt Johnson, Nick Knezevich, Blaine Smith and Josh B. Barney. Spring interment in New Holy Family cemetery.

Edwin Martin Erickson
Edwin Martin Erickson, 90, of Bayfield died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in the Bahamas.
Ed was born March 30, 1910, in Bayfield to Marten and Christine (Mickelson) Erickson. He graduated from Bayfield High School in 1927, and then attended college in Chicago, graduating as an electrician. Returning to Bayfield, he fished commercially, worked for the Hadland Fish Co., as captain on the Fish Hawk. He worked for the Lullabye Furniture Co. of Stevens Point as captain on the LCT 103 Outer Island. Eventually he purchased it from the company and until the time of his death owned and operated it as the Ed Erickson Freight Salvage Company.

Ed also served in the merchant marine on both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in 1944. He belonged to and was active in many organizations including the Flambeau Zor Shrine Clown unit from Park Falls, Bayfield-Washburn Masons Lodge 215, F&AM;, American Legion Post 49, Odd Fellows, Elks Lodge member for over 55 years, Bayfield Volunteer Fire Department and served as chief for many years, Greenwood cemetery Board, was a member of the Duluth Harbor Club and Shamrock Rebeckah Lodge 189.

He loved Bayfield and devoted much of his life to the betterment of it and the surrounding community. He was responsible for the blacktopping of roads in both cemeteries in Bayfield and providing access to water. He was instrumental in the renovation of the Lakeside Pavilion in Bayfield. Ed was responsible for the erection of the monument located in the Bayfield harbor in memory of the commercial fisherman of the Apostle Islands. One of his major focuses was to ensure educational opportunity for the youth of Bayfield County by establishing the Edwin Erickson Educational Foundation. Scholarships are awarded each year to deserving students. His final accomplishment was the realization of his dream of a maritime museum on the waterfront, to which he donated many artifacts.

Ed served on the Bayfield City Council from 1966 to 1968. He was mayor of Bayfield from 1970 to 1976, and again from 1980 to 1988. He also served on the Bayfield County Board for more than 26 years. He held positions and was very active on the following committees: chairman of Health and Social Services, chairman of the Zoning Committee, chairman of the highway department and on the committee many years, and member of the personnel and Sheriffs committees; and never missed a meeting.

He was married to Nell M. Hebert in 1933, and to this union, five children, James, Geraldine, Richard, Leonard and Debra were born. Nell passed away Sept. 28, 1971. Ed then married Shirley Bratt of Racine, Wis., in 1972. She passed away in 1992. In 1996, he married Mildred Sanders of Alexandrea, La., and she passed away in 1999.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons and son Richard; four sisters; a brother; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Ed is survived by sons James (Muriel) and Leonard (Bill); daughters Geraldine (Wally) and Deborah; a daughter-in-law, Nancy; sisters Lillian Cox of Stoughton, Wis., and Clarice (Earl) Anderson of Washburn; a sister-in-law, Connie Hebert of New Richmond, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: noon until the 3 p.m. service Monday with military honors accorded by the Bayfield American Legion Post 49 and VFW Post 8239 of Red Cliff, Wis., in the Lakeside Pavilion, Bayfield. The Rev. John Green officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society, Bayfield Maritime Museum or the Greenwood cemetery Fund. Arrangements by Mountain Funeral Home, Ashland, Bayfield and Mellen.
