Leigh Roy Ittner, 70, of International Falls died Tuesday, March 13, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; a son, David Ittner; a daughter, Lori Ittner; two grandchildren; four brothers; a sister; and a brother-in-law.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today in Green-Larsen Mortuary, International Falls and service 2 p.m. Saturday with flag presentation in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, International Falls. Disposition will be by cremation.

Arnie A. Laine
Arnie A. Laine, 86, of Aitkin, formerly of Lawler died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in the Riverwood Health Care Center, Aitkin.
Memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangments by Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.

Frances L. Fay
Frances L. Fay, 87, of Ely died Friday, May 4, 2001, in the Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home.
She was born in Houston, Minn., Dec. 22, 1913, to parents Edward and Nora (Poss) Halverson. She was a nurse's aide at the Winton and Ely-Bloomenson Hospitals for over 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Raymond in 1988.

Survivors include daughters Carol (Bernie) Urbas and Mary (Ted) Labernik of Ely; sisters Eunice (Clark) Goss of Forest Lake, Minn., and Doris Eiken of Duluth; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Ely, the Rev. John Sustersic officiating. Inurnment in Ely cemetery. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely.

Felix Svoboda
Felix Svoboda, 90, of Meadowlands died Friday, May 4, 2001, in his home.
Survivors include his wife, Vlasta Svoboda; a son, Philip (Sari) Svoboda; daughters Phyllis (Darrel) Koivunen and MaryAnn Wickstrom; a brother, Rudolph Svoboda; a sister, Christina Viehveg; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. May 18 in the Meadowlands Community Center.

Raymond O. Jensen
Raymond O. Jensen, 78, of Nashwauk died Friday, May 4, 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Jean; sons Raymond (Maryclare) Jr., Craig (Lenora), Brian (Gail) and Kurt (Patty) Jensen; a brother, Lou Jensen; a sister, Betty (Harold) Smith; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing, with Masonic service at 7 p.m. Visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Nashwauk Lutheran Church. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing.

James Walsh Bianco
James Walsh Bianco, 73, of Cass Lake died Friday, May 4, 2001, in North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji, Minn., after a courageous year-long battle against acute leukemia.
Born May 2, 1928, in Duluth, the second of four sons of Dr. and Mrs. A.J. Bianco Sr., he grew up in Duluth, graduating from Denfeld High School. After attending University of Miami, he graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1951. He served his country for three years in the U.S. Marine Corps and was honorable discharged in 1953 as a first lieutenant. He returned to Duluth and shortly after began what was to be a lifelong career in banking. In 1967, he purchased the First National Bank in Cass Lake where he served as president. He was active in the community, serving on the Cass Lake City Council, a member of the American Legion Club and St. Charles Catholic Church. For the past 20 years he spent his winters in Vero Beach, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Anthony J. Bianco Sr. in 1986; youngest brother, Richard, in 1987; and mother, Amy Bianco in 1999.

He is survived by his best friend and wife of 44 years, Nola; their children Mimi (Tom) Howard of St. Paul, James (Annie) Bianco of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Michael (Lisa) Bianco of Bemidji; grandchildren Molly, Katey, Michael, Tony, Madeleine and Danny; brothers Anthony (Joann) Bianco of Rochester, Minn., and William (Dolores) Bianco of Bismarck, N.D.; sister-in-law, Billie Bianco of Duluth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday in St. Charles Catholic Church, Cass Lake, where service is 11 a.m. Tuesday, the Rev. Gene Lyttle officiating. Honorary casket bearers: Richard Neises, Leroy Ellis, Dean Christensen, Larry Engebretson, Richard Bostrom, Frank Sklaris and Billy Bye. Active casket bearers: Larry Oakes, Roland Bitzer, James Dorr, Roger Aitken, Peter Neises and Steven Johnson.

Interment following cremation will be at Pine Grove cemetery in Cass Lake. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.

John C. Carlsen
John C. Carlsen, 82, of Virginia died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 12, 1919, in Minneapolis, the son of Wilfred and Marie (Leegard) Carlsen. He was a graduate of the Minneapolis school system, held a degree in mechanical engineering and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II with special schooling in mine sweeping, mine warfare, firefighting and as a commando ranger. John married Helen Nelson March 31, 1943, in Portsmouth, Va.

He was employed by International Harvester and Shell Oil Co. before establishing Food and Fuel Inc. of Arden Hills, Minn., Consolidated Trading Company of Virginia and owning Taconite Oil Co. Inc. of Virginia.

John was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Virginia, Virginia Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Power Engineers, American Society of Lubrication Engineers, the Kitchi Gammi Club, Masonic Lodge 186, Scottish Rite Bodies of Duluth, Aad Temple Shrine of Duluth and Jester's Court 55 of Duluth. He was a retired golfer, avid fisherman, "hawg wild bird hunter, shepherd of grandchildren, harassed cabinet maker and handyman, and photographer extraordinaire."

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Marie Carlsen; a son, John Carlsen III; sisters Helen Petter and Audrey Will; and a brother, Howard Carlsen.

John is survived by his wife, Helen; a daughter, Susan E. Highum of Virginia; a son, Bruce (Sharon) Carlsen of Britt; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Carlsen of Duluth; grandchildren Julie Highum, Brian Highum, Tricia Carlsen, Melanie Carlsen, Steven Johnson, Brooke Carlsen, and Kristen Carlsen; great-grandchildren Tianna Bauman, Brandon Bauman; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Virginia, Pastor Cheryl Berg officiating. Interment in Greenwood cemetery, Virginia. Military Honors accorded by the Virginia Serviceman's Color Guard.

Dorothy L. Christensen
Dorothy L. Christensen, 79, of Aitkin died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, in St. Luke's Medical Center, Duluth.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur in 1965; and a sister.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Peter David and Judith Carol Christensen of Ellicott, Md., Robert James and Susan Elizabeth Christensen of Duluth, Thomas Arthur and Gloria Elaine Christensen of Malmo, Minn., James Allen and Darlene Carol Christensen of Malmo; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Thursday in the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin, and continuing 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Bethesda Lutheran Church, Malmo, the Rev. James Raisanen officiating. Burial in Fort Snelling National cemetery 11 a.m. Monday. Arrangements by Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.

she was born july 17, l934, to quin and florence wall. kathleen grew up and graduated from high school in valley city. she attended the university of minnesota in minneapolis and duluth, graduating with a degree in speech pathology and audiology. kathleen developed the speech correction program at st. michael's school in duluth. she later worked as a speech clinician in hill city and grand rapids. one of her specialties was teaching the deaf to speak. kathleen married gaylord simons june 11, 1954, in minneapolis. through the years they resided in montana, texas, mississippi, washington and minnesota. upon retirement, their time was spent between their homes in gallatin gateway, mont., and grand rapids. kathleen was a member of the community presbyterian church, american association of speech and hearing, and american association of university women. she was active in many community service organizations including advocates against domestic abuse and friends of the library. literature, art, theater, music, travel and family played significant parts in her life.

she was preceded in death by her parents, quin and florence wall.

MaryLou Mickle
MaryLou Mickle, 58, of Poplar died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001.
Survivors include her husband, LeRoy; sons LeRoy Jr. and Anthony (Candy) Mickle; daughters Merilee Mickle, Angela (John) Robinson and Alissa Mickle; seven grandchildren; her mother, Alice Burdick; sisters Nona (Mike) Nelson and Sandra (Burdick) Higley; nieces, nephews; and a special friend, Molly Hince.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Wednesday in William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home.

Robert "Bob" C. Jarvela
Robert "Bob" C. Jarvela of Sparta died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, in Eveleth.
Survivors include brothers Burton (Carol), William (Judy), Ben (Sandy) and Steve; sisters Elizabeth "Betty" Jarvela, Bonnie Leppanen; sister-in-law, Patsy Jarvela.
Service: 11 a.m. Thursday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Gilbert. Full military honors accorded by the Gilbert VFW. Lunch served at the Gilbert VFW following service. Inurnment at a later date.

Francis L. "Casey" Belanger
Francis L. "Casey" Belanger, 79, of Nashwauk died on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, in the University Medical Center-Mesabi, Hibbing.
He was born in Duluth March 31, 1921, to Julius and Frances (Thompson) Belanger and as an infant moved to the Bear River-Togo area. He attended Togo School and in 1942 he entered the U.S. Army. He fought in Sicily, Italy and North Africa and was awarded the Bronze Star. When he returned home, he went to work in the mines and retired from Cleveland Cliffs in 1981. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, gardening and picking blueberries. He was a wonderful, giving friend and next-door neighbor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Raymond, Isadore and Jules; a sister, Anna Nelson; and a wife, Delores Belanger in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Verna Granlund Belanger; sons Roy "Butch" (Shelly) Belanger of Shakopee, Minn., Joseph (Sherry) Belanger of Nashwauk and Raymond (Sally) Belanger of Kelly Lake; daughters Kathy (Bill) Hauer of Cascade, Mont., and Francine (John) Kirk of Morris, Minn.; stepchildren Brenda (Bill) Perryman of Nashwauk, David Maki of Minneapolis, Lynda (John) Flint of Nashwauk, Karen (Albert) Carlson of Meadowlands, Larry Granlund of Cromwell, Robert Granlund of Makinen, and Brian Granlund of Cloquet; a sister, Delores Pintar of Hibbing; 22 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and his faithful poodle, Sassy.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing, the Rev. Dr. Lyle Rossing officiating. Pallbearers: L.D. Hallmark, John Flint, Tony Feldhaus, Todd Saari, Brian Granlund, Jody Wright. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing.
