Gary "Gomer" Raymond Elj
Gary "Gomer" Raymond Elj, 49, of Virginia died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 15, 1951, to Harold and Alice (Nyhus) Elj in Grand Rapids. He grew up in Buck Lake and attended school in Nashwauk, graduating from Nashwauk-Keewatin High School in 1959.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War serving with the 82nd Airborne "Pa Pa" Company. He was the last surviving member of his company.

On Oct. 18, 1971, he was united in marriage with Ardelle Alto in Nashwauk. Following marriage, the couple lived in Hibbing, Calloway, Frazee and Richmond, Minn., and San Francisco prior to moving to Virginia. He was employed by Entronics in Eveleth as an electronic technician. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also had a love for carpentry.

He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Lee Elj, in July 1979.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Ardelle; a son, Derek Allen Elj of Virginia; a daughter, Sherry Kay Elj (Ryan Gibson) of Eveleth; a granddaughter, Kailey Joy Gibson of Eveleth; his parents, Harold and Alice Elj of Nashwauk and Yuma, Ariz.; sisters Barbara Elj of Duluth, Susan (Jim) McCaski of Hibbing; brothers Duane (Terri) Elj of Ironwood, Mich., Darrell (Sally) Elj of Pengilly; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Thursday in Range Funeral Home, Virginia, the Rev. Marlin Bjornrud officiating. A flag presentation will be accorded by the Virginia Color Guard.

Robert Leslie Henderson
Robert Leslie Henderson, 80, of International Falls died Wednesday, May 2, 2001.
He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy.

Survivors include his wife, June; daughters Roberta C. Hollis and Kathryn E. DeMaio; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Service with flag presentation: 2 p.m. Tuesday in Green-Larsen Memorial Chapel, the Rev. Larry Connors officiating.

Julia A. Dundovich
Julia A. Dundovich, 76, of Keewatin died Friday, May 4, 2001, in the Leisure Hills Care Center, Hibbing.
Survivors include her husband, John P.; a son, Michael (Kathy) Dundovich; daughters Phyllis (George) Nisius, Patricia Dundovich and Pamela (Wayne) LaBine; brothers John and Frank (Jean) Kuriatnyk; and nine grandchildren.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Keewatin. Private interment in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing.

Mary "Maymie" Dusek
Mary "Maymie" Dusek, 84, of Floodwood died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, in the Benedictine Health Center in Duluth.
She was born Jan. 16, 1917, in Waterbury, Conn. Mary had lived in Hibbing; Akron, Ohio; Floodwood; and Duluth. She graduated from Floodwood High School and attended two years of business college in Duluth. Mary worked at the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, where she met her husband Luke of Floodwood. She was married in 1943 and moved to Floodwood, where they operated a dairy and beef farm. Mary was proud to call herself a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Anna Seredinski; her husband of 42 years, Luke; a brother, John; sisters Jenny Cuda and Helen Skinner; and a great-grandson, Adam Lopez.

Mary is survived by her daughters Terese (Jerry) Perkins of Worthington, Minn., Karen (Francis) Alfonsi of Proctor, Jean (Joseph) Pessenda and Barbara (Daniel) Hoffman, both of Duluth, and Mary Jo (Jeffrey) Briggs of Seattle, Wash; sons Thomas of Cloquet and James (Lisa) of Floodwood; grandchildren Julie, Michael, Craig, Keith, Jacob, Jill, Matthew, Rebekah, Mark, Luke, Jason, Andrew, Siri and Anna Lisa; great-grandchildren Arianna and Mia; and sisters Lillian (Larry) Rapp of Duluth and Regina Remmerden of Marysville, Wash.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mollen and Mary's "extended" family, the caregivers at Aftenro, the Benedictine Health Center, and their Special Care Unit, where she received exceptional care.
Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Friday with 6 p.m. wake prayers in Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in St. Louis Catholic Church of Floodwood. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery, Van Buren Township. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth.

Sylvester J. Kirschling
Sylvester J. Kirschling, 85, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Roseville, Minn.
He was born June 23, 1915, in Hibbing to Nicholas and Susan (Makuski) Kirschling.

He is survived by his brother, Lawrence (Vera); sisters Cecelia (Harry) Hayward and Antoinette Plesha; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. A private burial was held in Hibbing Park cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.

Ruth Christofferson
Centenarian
Ruth Christofferson, 103, of Chisholm died Tuesday, May 1, 2001.
She is survived by her children, Ruby Christofferson, Thelma Ellickson and Leonard (Marlys); two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Faith Lutheran Church, Chisholm, the Rev. Lilette E. Johnston officiating. Interment in Chisholm cemetery. Arrangements by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Chisholm.

Minnie A. Lang
Minnie A. Lang, 92, of Town of Chicog, Wis., died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, in Care Partners Assisted Living, Spooner.
She is survived by her son, Donald (Rosemarie) Lang of Town of Chicog; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today with 7 p.m. scripture service and a 7:30 p.m. tribute by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 465 in Brown Funeral Home, Minong. Funeral to be held Tuesday, May 8, in Chicago. Interment in Rosehill cemetery.

James Poye
James Poye died Wednesday, April 23, 2001, in the Comfort House in McAllan, Texas.
Mr. Poye was born July 11, 1924, in Two Harbors.
Memorial service: noon until the 2 p.m. service Saturday in Peace United Church of Christ, Brillion, Wis.

Ernest A. Rutanen
Ernest A. Rutanen, 73, of Deer River died Tuesday, May 1, 2001.
Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. service Saturday in Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River. Burial in Pine Ridge cemetery, Deer River Township.

Mamie A. Isaacs
Mamie A. Isaacs, 97, of Deer River died Tuesday, May 1, 2001.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today in Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River. Service at 1 p.m. Friday in Independent Apostolic Church, Deer River.

LeRoy E. Beaudry
LeRoy E. Beaudry, 75, of McGregor died Sunday, April 29, 2001, in the Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in McGregor Funeral Home with the Rev. John Fleischhacker officiating. Burial in Woodland cemetery with military honors accorded by the McGregor Larson-Deneen VFW Post. Arrangements by McGregor Funeral Home, McGregor.

Dorothy (Nyquist) Mitchell
Dorothy (Nyquist) Mitchell, 82, formerly of Solon Springs, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Fairview Southdale Hospital, Edina.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Solon Springs. Interment in Evergreen cemetery, Solon Springs. The Brown Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Edna M. Jensen
Edna M. Jensen, 80, of Carlton died Monday, April 30, 2001, in the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital.
She was born July 30, 1920, in Omaha, Neb., to Carl and Gladys (Birnstihl) Jensen and moved to the Carlton area in 1944.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a niece, Judith Adkins.

She is survived by her sister, Leah Adkins of Carlton; nephews Richard Adkins of Cloquet and Daniel (Julie) Adkins of Wrenshall; a niece, Mary Jane Adkins of Carlton; great-nephews Daniel Adkins Jr. and Aaron Daniel Adkins; great-nieces Emily Anne Marie Adkins and Amanda Marie Hillman; and a sister-in-law, Loretta Lucier of Cloquet.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service today in Nelson Funeral Care Chapel, Cloquet, the Chaplain Rosemary Tobin officiating. Burial in Hillside cemetery in Carlton. Coffee and refreshments will be served at the funeral home. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care.

Harold "Pump" Achman
Harold "Pump" Achman, 79, of Iron died Sunday, April 22, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in the Range Funeral Home, Virginia. A flag presentation will be accorded by the Virginia Color Guard. Burial in Calvary cemetery, Virginia.
