Hilda Marie Hanna
Hilda Marie Hanna, 97, formerly of Cloquet, died Monday, June 18, 2001, in Nopeming Care Center in Duluth.
She was born Feb. 11, 1904, in Cardiff, Wales, to William and Emma (Chugg) White. In 1912, her family came to the United States and settled in Crookston. She married Carl Isaacson in 1929 in Carlton. He preceded her in death in 1961.

She moved to Duluth and later married Leo Hanna. She was very active in the Duluth Senior Citizens and from 1994 to 1997 was a volunteer at Tri-Towers, where she lived.

In addition to her two husbands, Hilda was preceded in death by her sons, Larry, Kenny, David and Floyd Isaacson; brothers William and Herbert White; and sisters, Ethel, Grace, Mabel and Maude.

Hilda is survived by a son, Donald (Jeannine) Isaacson of Cloquet; daughters Beverly (Wesley) Hunter of Culver and Margaret (Gordon) Purcell of Texas; sisters Lilly and Violet; 24 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from noon until the 1 p.m. memorial service Friday in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St. in Cloquet. (To sign the guest book online, see www.legacy.com)

Edna Evelyn Mattson
Edna Evelyn Mattson, 91, of Esko died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in Birchview Acres Home in Carlton.
She was born Dec. 15, 1909, in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, to John and Mary (Fredrickson) Esko. At age 7, she moved with her family to Montana and then moved to Esko in 1924. She was a 1928 graduate of Esko High School. She married Eric Mattson on April 8, 1930, in Cloquet. Edna worked in a stained glass factory in Minneapolis, where she painted the colors on the glass before colored glass was used. She enjoyed sewing and oil painting and painted the banners at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and its Ruth Circle and was a member of Esko Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eric on May 8, 1997; brothers Walter, Howard, Roy and John Esko; and sisters Sylvia Dinsmore and Myrtle Toone.

Edna is survived by a son, Michael (Ruth) Mattson of Lincoln, Neb.; daughters Dorothy (Russell) Plaisted of Hermantown and Shirley (Charles) Eckman of Moose Lake; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters Alice Toone of Sun City, Ariz., Mabel Alexander of Redondo Beach, Calif. and Betty (Walter) Sullivan of Granville, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Ailie Mattson of Esko; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Bill and Chris Sandstrom and their other caretakers, especially Jean, at Birchview Acres for their wonderful tender, loving care they've given to Edna the last three years.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral Friday in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Esko. Herbert G. Stangland
Centenarian

Herbert G. Stangland, 100, of Cloquet died Monday, June 18, 2001, in Nopeming Care Center where he had been a resident since 1996.
He was born Jan. 15, 1901, in Brandt, S.D. to Martin and Anna (Mickelson) Stangeland.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bernice of Nopeming; his daughter, Ann Stangland of Cloquet; a son, Herbert G. (Joan) Stangland Jr. of Winter Park, Fla.; a granddaughter, Sara Stangland of Winter Park; and cousins Owen Engen of Minneapolis, Fern Howard of Sauk City, Wis., and Hazel Hawks of Hendricks, Minn.
Visitation: 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Nopeming Care Center Chapel, third floor. Funeral at 3 p.m. Saturday in Nopeming Care Center Main Cafeteria, first floor. Inurnment in Mt. William "Bill" R. Ringdahl
William "Bill" R. Ringdahl, 79, of Grand Rapids died Monday, June 18, 2001, in the Itasca Medical Center in Grand Rapids.
He was born and raised in Duluth to Palmer and Ida (Rankila) Ringdahl and was a 1941 graduate of Central High School. He served in the Army during World War II and in 1944 was united in marriage to Betty Ellis. He worked many years for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1977, as postmaster of Floodwood. He was a longtime resident of Duluth and Hermantown. After his retirement, he had lived for 10 years in Sun City, Ariz., and had lived in Grand Rapids since 1994.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids and of the Ionic Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Aad Temple Shrine, all of Duluth. He was known as "Willie the Clown" in area Shrine parades and circuses.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; sons Lee (Leslee) of Grand Rapids and Bob (Linda) of Moundsview, Minn.; grandchildren Jason Ringdahl, Jennifer Stefan, Shivon Miller and Gretchen Ringdahl; and a great-grandson, Taylor Ringdahl.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Thursday in the Zion Lutheran Church Chapel, Grand Rapids, the Rev. Joel Rova officiating. Burial in Itasca-Calvary cemetery, Grand Rapids. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids.

Richard "Dick" James Klun
Richard "Dick" James Klun, 51, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in Houston, Texas.
He was born Oct. 2, 1949, in Soudan to Helen Francis Akins Klun and Herman Charles Klun. He attended Tower-Soudan public schools and graduated high school in 1968. Later that year, he began his post-secondary studies at Vermilion Community College, in Ely. In 1970, he transferred to Bemidji State University. He married Wynn Marie Haurunen in Tower on July 17, 1971. They lived in Bemidji, where he graduated BSU in 1972, earning a bachelor of science degree in education.

Dick began his employment career at Reserve Mining Co., in Babbitt, while in college. Upon graduating BSU, he worked at U.S. Steel's Minntac Plant in Mountain Iron until 1976. From 1976 to 1980, he taught at Eveleth Vocational-Technical Institute in Eveleth. In 1980, Dick joined the Arabian American Oil Co. in Saudi Arabia as an industrial training vocational instructor at Dhahran. He advanced to supervising trainer of gas training at Ras Tanura in 1992 and became supervisor of refinery operations training in 1994. He transferred to Dhahran as planning staff associate in 1997. In 2000, Dick worked in ARAMCO's international headquarters in Houston, Texas, with responsibilities for distance education for the company's training organization, and retired in Jan. 2001, after an extensive 20-year career.

The Klun's recently established residence in Missouri City, Texas. They spent summers at their Lake Vermilion cabin in Tower for the past several years.

Dick Klun was an outstanding athlete. His competitive sports in high school and college included basketball and football. He enjoyed lifelong involvement in racquetball, softball and golf as well. Dick is also remembered as an avid outdoorsman, and was equally known as hunter, trapper and fisherman.

Dick faced his cancer-related illness with the same resolve with which he met all of life's challenges and opportunities. His was an indomitable spirit. He is greatly missed by his family, friends and associates in many parts of the world.

He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Klun; a brother, Charles Klun; and his father-in-law, Walter Haurunen.

Dick is survived by his wife, Wynn Marie; daughters Heather Marie and Amanda Wynn; his mother, Helen Klun; a sister, Cathy (Joe) Vene; a brother, Jerry (Ruth) Klun; his mother-in-law, Lorraine Hahne; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, in St. Martin's Catholic Church, Tower, the Rev. Father Jim Lyons officiating.

Evelyn A. Wangaard
Evelyn A. Wangaard, 86, of Arlington Heights, Ill., died Monday, June 18, 2001.
She was born Feb. 2, 1915, in New Castle, New Brunswick, Canada.

Evelyn was a homemaker. As an adult she was a member of the National Ski Patrol and very active in outdoor activities including; water skiing, snow skiing, ice skating and canoeing. She was a worthy matron of the Eastern Star in Vermont chapter and also taught Sunday school.

She is survived by her husband, John C. Wangaard Sr.; children Clark (Jan) Wangaard, Chris Wangaard, Betty Williamson and Lorry (Dan) Wangaard-Heine; eight grandchildren; and a brother, George Jones.
A private family service will be today in The Lutheran Home, Arlington Heights. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Lutheran Home, 800 W. Oakton, Arlington Heights, IL 60004, or Alzheimer's Association, 4709 Golf Road, Ste. 1015, Skokie, IL 60076.

Helen B.J. Vraa
Helen B.J. Vraa, of Nashwauk died Monday, June 18, 2001, in her home.
She is survived by sons Charles (Gina) and Paul Vraa; daughters Carol Ann Meyer, Nancy Jagars and Gayle (Randy) Mathison; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Thursday in the Nashwauk Lutheran Church, the Rev. Jean Megorden officiating. Interment in the Nashwauk cemetery. Arrangments by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Edna Elfreda Palmi
Edna Elfreda Palmi, 76, went home to be with her beloved Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Monday, June 18, 2001.
She is survived by her sons, Bob (Patty), Dan (Diane) and Dwight (Paula) Palmi; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two sisters; and a brother.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Visitation continues from 1 until the 2 p.m. service Thursday in First Baptist Church, Aurora, the Rev. Donald Fisher officiating.

April M. Johnson
April M. Johnson, 49, of Grand Rapids died Saturday, June 16, 2001, in her home after a long and painful battle with degenerative arthritis.
She leaves behind her only son, Anthony of Hana, Hawaii; a sister, Koko Schlottman of Grand Rapids; nephew and niece; and special friends, Paul E., Eris and Bob H., Mary T., Francine F., Sid and Steve R., Jeanne G. and Dr. Jack V. Carlisle. April was a beloved mother, sister, aunt and friend. Many thanks on behalf of her family for the love and support her friends had given her.

Albert "A.C." "Ace" "Bebe" Carl Johnson
Albert "A.C." "Ace" "Bebe" Carl Johnson, 61, of Carlton and Gunflint Lake died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in the Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet.
He was born Aug. 13, 1939, in Carlton to Albert and Doris (Vargason) Johnson and was a lifelong area resident. He graduated from Carlton High School in 1957 and was united in marriage to Barbara Dahlberg on Jan. 10, 1959, in Carlton. Albert was a foreman of the millwrights in the boiler room for the Potlatch Corp., and retired in 1997 with 39 years of service.

"Bebe" owned the first snowmobile in Carlton in 1962. He enjoyed hunting, golfing, snowmobiling and fishing. The joy of his life was being with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara; sons Phillip (Merie) Johnson of Carlton and Steven (Laura) Johnson of Duluth; daughters Sheryl (Dean) Davis of Carlton and Alison (Geoff) Bowen of Duluth; his mother, Doris Johnson of Carlton; grandchildren Matthew, Mark, Kristin, Aaron, April, Allan, Chelsea, Erik and Alek; a brother, Tim (Ruby) Johnson Sr. of Carlton; and sisters Patsy (Dick) Nygren of Carlton and Wendie Line of Milwaukee.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday in Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Bethesda Lutheran Church in Carlton, the Rev. Michael Fossen officiating. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Tim Johnson Jr., Doug Johnson, Blair Nygren, Brad Nygren, Tom Anderson, Mike Melin and Paul Melin. Interment services will follow at Hillside cemetery in Carlton. The family requests casual dress and shorts for attire at the funeral. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet.
