Anna Maria Sophia "Sophie" Johnson, 105
, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, in Cloquet Community Memorial Nursing Home.
She was born March 13, 1896, in Thomson Township, Esko, to John and Hannah Lindquist. She attended the Maunu grade school, was active in the local township and area community events such as the township fair, working at the cannery in the school during World War II, giving Saturday night haircuts before sauna, in addition to her farm chores. She married
William Johnson July 28, 1917.
She was preceded in death by her husband; sons Bill, Reuben and Paul; a daughter, Helen Fischbach; three brothers and two sisters.
Sophie is survived by a daughter, Ruth of Esko; daughters-in-law Alice Johnson of Cloquet and Cris Johnson of Esko; a brother, Henry (who will be 100 years old May 31) of Cloquet; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Wednesday in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 service Thursday in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Esko. Jane Winholtz, 90, of St. Paul died Sunday, May 27, 2001.
She was born Jan. 7, 1911, and was preceded in death by her parents, O.M. and Clara Lehne; and her husband, Caleb Winholtz.
Survivors include cousins.

Helen Mavis Charchenko, 81, of Hibbing died Sunday, May 27, 2001.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph; a son, Joel (Caroline) Charchenko; grandsons Brian (Paula) Charchenko and Bradley (Michelle) Charchenko; a sister, Ardith Schuster; a brother, Byron (Olive) Larson; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 a.m. until the noon service Thursday in First Baptist Church, Hibbing. Interment in the Riverside cemetery in Crookston, Minn.
Joyce A. Bardine
Joyce A. Bardine, 61, of Pengilly and Golden Valley, Minn., died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in Hopkins.
She was born April 1, 1940, in Minneapolis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvert; a son, Mark; parents Fred R. and Cornelia Ledin; brothers Thomas, Daniel and Fred D. Ledin; and a sister, Janet Rascom.
Survivors include sons Richard, Paul and Ronald (Jody); daughters Jennifer Garmaker (Rory) and Julie Warmbold (Darryl); eight grandchildren; brothers and sisters Marjorie Thompson, Patricia Petersen, Diana Fox, Mary Jane Brown, Judy Shockley, Robert Ledin, Joan Grady, Michael Ledin, and Mark Ledin; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Maj. Darrell F. Manthei
Maj. Darrell F. Manthei, 79, of Buck Lake, Minn., near Nashwauk died Friday, May 25, 2001.
He is survived by daughters Carol (Gary) Johnson, Sue (Jerry) Swankier and Peg (Randy) Shaw; a son, James C. (Leah) Manthei; a brother, George (Jean) Manthei; a sister, Marion Berg; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside service: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hillside cemetery, Minneapolis. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.
Roy Elmer Sankari
Roy Elmer Sankari, 82, formerly of Cloquet died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in Sacramento, Calif.
He was born May 23, 1919, in Cloquet to Oscar and Anna (Nousainen) Sankari. He was an Army veteran of World War II. After the war he lived in the Twin Cities, where he worked for the University of Minnesota for several years as a campus police officer. He later moved to Sacramento where he worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 23 years. Roy also enjoyed hosting the Oregon State Parks from April to September for many years.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Sterling; and a sister, Mamie Danca.
Roy is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Sacramento; children, Diane Sankari-Terra of Sacramento, LoAnne Sankari of Alaska, Steven Sankari and Nancy (Kurt) Sankari-Bundrock, both of Spokane, Wash.; a sister, Vi Reponen of Carlton; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Sacramento.

Wilho A. Walkama, 90, of Makinen died Monday, June 11, 2001, in Virginia Regional Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Edith; daughters Helen Maki, Joyce (Richard) Saarela and Carol (Burton) Jarvela; sons Robert (Sue) Walkama and Dale Walkama; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren;

James W. Toscano, 89, of Chisholm died Saturday, June 8, 2001, in Leisure Hills Health Center, Hibbing.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta; children Roseanne (Jeff) Grosso, Regina (Patrick) Scott, A. James "Jim" (Rose Marie) Toscano, Lois (Ron Sr.) Fesnick, Mary (Charlie Hall) Mickelson; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother; and a sister.

She is survived by daughters Judy Kohel and Shirley (Kendall) George; granddaughters Amber and Tanna George; and sisters Doris Dye and Grace Malafa.

Aliah Elaine Keehr, infant, was born and given to our Father on Saturday, June 9, 2001.
We will forever feel her presence and deeply miss her.
