Esther M. Drieman
Esther M. Drieman, 83, of Bigfork, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, in the Spruce Lodge, Bigfork.
Born July 6, 1917, she was the daughter of Henry and Anna (Mattfield) Tobeck. She grew up and lived in the Toad Lake area until she was 18. She married James J. Drieman on May 21, 1938, in Eveleth. They then lived in Eveleth, Deer Lake, Effie, Savage, Grand Rapids, Ostrander and Marble. After retirement, Jim and Esther moved to the Graves Lake and Bigfork area.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; brothers George and Henry; and sisters Louella, Doris, Bertha, Minnie, Mary, Emma and Annie.

Survivors include her children, James E. (Mary Ann) Drieman of Blaine, Minn., Dennis H. (Irene) Drieman of Marble, Judith A. (James) Wodahl of Hawk Springs, Wyo., and Paul D. (Marsha) Drieman of Wright City, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Erkkila of Marble.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine, the Rev. John Sebentsfeldt officiating. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine.

Frances Ruth Axtell
Frances Ruth Axtell, 88, of Cohasset died Sunday, June 24, 2001, in Leisure Hills Care Center, Grand Rapids.
She is survived by sons Floyd, Donald and Ronald Axtell; sisters Florence Peterson and Ella Fortin; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, and from 1 until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cohasset. Burial in Wildwood cemetery, Cohasset.

Barbara A. Johnsted
Barbara A. Johnsted, 59, of Minong died Thursday, June 21, 2001, in her home.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Jr.; daughters Lorie (Miker) Orthober and Kandie (Mike) Skippon; grandchildren Joseph, Susan, Brandi and Amanda; a brother, Jim Golke; and half brothers Gene Golke and Jerry Golke.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service today in Brown Funeral Home, Minong.

Patricia "Pat" Lillian Scott
Patricia "Pat" Lillian Scott, 77, of Grand Rapids died Saturday, June 23, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
Her family was at her side when she succumbed to multiple myeloma cancer.

She was born March 4, 1924, to Arthur and Cere (Kanninen) Bartoli in Duluth. Pat grew up and attended schools in Ely and Chicago, graduating from Senn High School in Chicago. She was employed at Postal Telegraph in Evanston, Ill., later working for the 3M Co. in St. Paul. Pat enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the WAVES during World War II as a telegrapher third class. Her training took place at Hunter College in New York City. On March 13, 1945, she married Bruce "Buck" Scott in the Bronx, New York. Following the war, Pat dedicated her life to raising her family in Grand Rapids. In later years, she was employed at the Grand Rapids State Bank in the bookkeeping department and at Norwest Bank as a bookkeeper. Pat was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, serving as the funeral chairman for many years; a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and a member of the Itasca County Stroke Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Hammack.

Pat's main priority was her family, and she was proud of her service in the Navy during World War II.

Survivors include her husband, Bruce "Buck"; daughters Bonnie (Larry) Swedal of Elk River, Minn., and Nancy Scott of Grand Rapids; sons James (Beth Newton) Scott of Cohasset and Daniel (Kim) Scott of Mankato, Minn.; grandchildren Kari Newton, Sheri, Michael and Steven Swedal and Aaron and Ryan Scott; a great-granddaughter, Miranda Newton.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today with wake service at 5:30 in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Grand Rapids, the Rev. Father Thomas Radaich officiating. Burial with full military honors in Itasca-Calvary cemetery, Grand Rapids. Memorials preferred to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 11 Forest St., New Canaan, CT 06840.

Bertil E. "Swede" Anderson
Bertil E. "Swede" Anderson, 92, of Ely died Saturday, June 23, 2001, in the Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital.
He was born Jan. 16, 1909, in Sweden to Ernest and Emma (Helm) Anderson and moved to Virginia when he was 18 months old. He had been a resident of Ely since 1929. He married Rose Lah June 11, 1941. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific. Swede worked in the copper mines in Butte, Mont., and later at Sibley Mine and Pioneer Mine, both in Ely. He was an avid fisherman, having worked as a guide in the 1940s and 1950s. He was a member of VFW Post 2717 in Ely.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Alex Larson; brothers Wally and Einer Anderson.

Survivors include his wife, Rose; a daughter, Venora (Don) Hare of Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren Dawn (Donnie) Trahern and Russell (Eva) Hare, both of Amarillo; great-grandchildren Dusty Trahern, Destiny Trahern, Jordan Hare and Eric Hare, all of Amarillo; sisters-in-law Molly Tisovich of Ely and Frances Morris of Silver Bay; numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Tuesday in Kerntz Funeral Chapel. Inurnment in Ely cemetery.

Stephanie Suzanne (Johnson) Snickers
Stephanie Suzanne (Johnson) Snickers, 28, of Alborn died Saturday, June 23, 2001 as a result of an automobile accident.
Born Sept. 4, 1972, in Cloquet to Lyn and Rae (Anderson) Johnson, she graduated from Cloquet High School in 1991. She was currently employed with Northwest Airlines in Chisholm. Stephanie "Queenie" married her best friend and fishing buddy, John Snickers on March 3, 2001, in Cloquet. Stephanie enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and reading.

Stephanie was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Arthur and Gladys Anderson; paternal grandfather, Everett Johnson; and a sister, Terrie Lyn Johnson.

She is survived by her husband, John of Alborn; her parents, Lyn and Rae Johnson of Cloquet; a brother, Thomas (Jackie) Johnson of Cloquet; sisters Kaycee (Mark) Garza and Nicole (Brandon Crotteau) Johnson, both of Cloquet; a niece, Desirae Garza; nephews Cordell Johnson and Preston Garza; her paternal grandmother, Lois Johnson of Cloquet; special aunt, Suzanne Johnson of Cloquet; and her mother-in-law, Jean Y. Snickers of Alborn.

She was a loyal friend and loved her family deeply. Her infectious smile and personality brightened up our world, we will miss her dearly.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet, and continuing from noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Louis J. Romanek
Louis J. Romanek, 80, of Eldersburg, Md., formerly of Cloquet died Saturday, June 16, 2001, in Oasys Eldercare, Columbia, Md.
He was born March 13, 1921, in Floodwood to Joseph and Mary (Laskowski) Romanek. He was an Army veteran and served in Europe from 1942-1945. Louie was employed by Floodwood Mercantile and Wood Conversion Mill in Cloquet from 1947-1957. He moved to California in 1957 and was employed by the Brookman Construction Co. until 1977. He moved to Texas in May 1985, then to Arizona in March 1993 and finally to Maryland in August 2000.

Louie was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rosalye Dub.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen of Eldersburg, Md.; a son, Rick (Roseanne) Romanek of Gambrills, Md.; a daughter, Suzanne (John) Boland of Eldersburg, Md.; grandchildren Rylie Romanek, Jamie Boland, Bryan Boland, Stephen Boland, Jimmy Bertrand and Melanie Bertrand; sisters Loretta (Ed) Wayne, and Teresa (Bud) Tyrell; brothers Herbert Romanek, Cubby (Florence) Romanek and Adolph (Betty) Romanek; and a brother-in-law, Leo Dub.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday in Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet. Visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. Memorial Mass Tuesday in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Cloquet, the Rev. Father Kenton Sailstad as celebrant. Inurnment services follow in Old Calvary cemetery with military honors presented by Cloquet Honor Guard. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet.

Roger Harold Anvid
Roger Harold Anvid, 54, of Alborn died suddenly at his home Thursday, June 21, 2001.
He was born May 9, 1947, in Duluth to Harold and Ruth (Bush) Anvid.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Roger is survived by a son, Tim (Tina) Anvid of Alborn; daughters Rae Lee (Perry) Webster of Golden Valley, Minn., and Teela (Ayo) Adeniyi of Minneapolis; his mother, Ruth K. Blom of Duluth; a brother, Raymond (Mary Jo) of Alborn; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Roger lived each day to its fullest with his children, grandchildren and friends. His family and friends will miss him dearly.

Emmett Joseph Richardson
Emmett Joseph Richardson, 85, of Crosby died Wednesday, June 20, 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Rose; sons Gerald and Jerome Richardson; a brother, Norman; sisters Iris Johnson and Luella Bergman; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Services were held June 23. Koop Funeral Home, Crosby, (218) 546-5531, was in charge of arrangements. Burial in Lakewood cemetery.

Ronald Dean Sweney
Ronald Dean Sweney, 77, of International Falls died Thursday, June 21, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. service Monday in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, International Falls. Arrangements by Green-Larsen Funeral Home, International Falls.

Alfred J. Jorgensen
Alfred J. Jorgensen, 85, of Bigfork died Thursday, June 21, 2001 in Bigfork.
Visitation: Noon until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in the Carroll Funeral Home, Bigfork. Burial in Bigfork cemetery.

Dorathea Anna Carlson
Dorathea Anna Carlson, 75, of Jacobson died Friday, June 22, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
She is survived by her husband, Adolph; daughters Anna Klampe and Joann Carlson; sons John, Ralph and Bernard Carlson; a brother, Otto Hesse; and 11 grandchildren.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Carmel Lutheran Church, Ball Bluff Township. Burial in Ball Bluff cemetery in Ball Bluff Township. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.
