James W. Madison Sr.
James W. Madison Sr., 75, of Knife River died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital with his family at his side.
He was born Feb. 2, 1926, to Louis and Florence (Dempke) Madison in Knife River. He was a lifelong resident of Knife River and served in the Merchant Marine Army Transport Division during World War II and later until 1955. He owned and operated his well-drilling business for more than 30 years and retired at age 60.

James Sr. loved to brook trout fish with his buddy Lyman and missed him dearly when Lyman passed on before him. He kept the deer herd thin enough to discourage the wolves. He worked hard, played hard, slept very little and skunked his children quite frequently whenever they dared to challenge him to a game of cribbage. Rest now dad and we'll see you on the other side.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Walter; and sister Lillian.

He is survived by children Jan (Stephen) Berguson of Duluth, James Madison Jr. of Knife River, Georgann (Charles) Hatfield of Superior, Sally Madison of Knife River, Bradley (Terry) Madison of Lacey, Wash.; brothers Johnny, Harold and George; sister Alice Lamo; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Private graveside service will be held in Lakeview cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Margaret Stevens Chilton
Margaret Stevens Chilton, 80, of Pengilly died April 23, 2001, in the Itasca Nursing Home in Grand Rapids.
She is survived by her husband, Dan of Pengilly; son Guy of Cascade Locks, Ore.; daughter Catherine Chilton-Werner of Fargo, N.D.; brother Robert Stevens of Seattle, Wash.; and granddaughters, Hallie and Iris Chilton and Adrienne Werner.
Memorial service at 3 p.m. Saturday in Pengilly United Methodist Church, the Rev. Jan Barker officiating. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Shirley "Dolly" Muckler
Shirley "Dolly" Muckler, 81, lifelong resident of Virginia and Lake Vermilion, Tower, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in Virginia Regional Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 4, 1920, in St. Paul, the daughter of Benjamin and Natalie (DaPron) Schultz. She was a graduate of Virginia High School, Virginia Junior College, and the Minnesota School of Business. She married Donald B. Muckler on Oct. 23, 1943, in Virginia. She was a member of United Methodist Church and enjoyed curling, golfing, bowling, fishing and hunting and was a volunteer in the hospital gift shop.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Muriel Way.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 57 years, Donald of Virginia and Lake Vermilion, Tower; daughters Pamela (Gordon) Rodby of Lake Vermilion, Tower, and Melissa (Michael) Hahne of Virginia; son Craig (Laura) Muckler of Northridge, Calif.; grandchildren Kevin Rodby, Allison Tekautz, Natalie, Spencer and Chad Hahne, and Naomi and Emily Muckler; and great-grandchildren Jarvin, Anna, Amber, Samantha, Hunter and Paige.
Visitation: one hour prior to the 5:30 p.m. funeral service Thursday in Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia, the Rev. Joyce Slostad officiating. Private interment at later date in Greenwood cemetery. Family services provided by Bauman-Cron, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia.

Dean Monroe
Dean Monroe, 73, of Floodwood died Monday, June 11, 2001, in his home in Floodwood.
He was born March 12, 1928, in Humeston, Iowa, to Riley and Irma (Brown) Monroe and moved to Warba as a child, attending school in Warba and Grand Rapids. He joined the Navy in 1945 and served until 1950, when he joined the Army, being discharged in 1953. He was united in marriage to Joyce Rautio on Sept. 18, 1954. He worked in the construction trades, retiring as a sheet metal worker in 1988 from Walker-Jamar of Duluth.

He was a member of the VFW Post of Floodwood and the American Legion Post of Cloquet. He was also a member of the Floodwood Lions Club and served many years on the Floodwood Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed being in the company of his friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce in 1998, and three brothers.

He is survived by daughters Tracy (William) Swenson and Faith Bailey, both of Floodwood; sons Kevin of Duluth, Scott (Linda) of Menomonee, Wis., and Patrick of Minneapolis; sisters Joanne (Shorty) King of Warba, Minn., and Jean (Willis) Walstad of Blaine, Minn.; a brother, Robert (Tillie) of Albuquerque, N.M.; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Thursday in Hope Lutheran Church, Floodwood, the Rev. Loren Anderson-Bauer officiating. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery, Floodwood. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Floodwood.

Leo J. Storms
Leo J. Storms, 84, of Sun City West, Ariz., formerly of Duluth and Hibbing, died Nov. 6, 2000, in Sun City West.
He is survived by his wife, June; children Douglas of Floodwood, Susan of Tucson, Ariz., and Robert of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside service: 10 a.m. Saturday in Maple Hill cemetery. Arrangements with Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Florence Johnson
Florence Johnson, 100, of Cloquet, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in Cloquet Convalescent Care Center.

Esther Collinge
Esther Collinge, 71, of Grand Rapids died Monday, June 11, 2001, in her son's West Cohasset home.
Esther is survived by a son, Kenneth (Cheryl) Collinge; granddaughters Nicole, Lindsey and Heather; three brothers; and one sister.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today in Libbey Funeral Home. Funeral service 2 p.m. Thursday in West Cohasset Chapel. Burial in Itasca-Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home.

Dale F. Dirkes
Dale F. Dirkes, 62, of Bigfork died on Monday, June 11, 2001, in the Northern Pines Communities in Bigfork.
Born May 15, 1939, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of John and Esther (Moonen) Dirkes. He graduated from Greenway High School, attended Itasca Community College, the Minneapolis School of Business and the University of Minnesota. He attended Catholic services at the Northern Pines Communities in Bigfork.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by a daughter, Danni Higgs of Dallas; a son, Billy Dirkes of Austin, Texas; and brothers Ron (Joanne) Dirkes of Sauk Rapids, Minn., Jim (Jan) Dirkes of Plymouth, Minn., and Gene (Deb) Dirkes of Bovey.
Visitation: [MD]1 9 until the 10 a.m. funeral Thursday in Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine, the Rev. Father Lloyd G. Mudrak officiating. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine. Arrangements by Peterson Funeral Chapel.

Isabelle Charlotte (Noland) Howie
Isabelle Charlotte (Noland) Howie, 93, of Pineview Apartments and Carlton Nursing Home, Carlton, formerly of Alamo, Texas, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in the Carlton Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ben Noland and Fred Howie; her mother and father; her brothers and sisters; a son, Robert; a daughter, Norma; a grandson George; a great-grandson, Benji; and a son-in-law, Peter Plankers.

Isabelle is survived by children Ben Noland of Alamo, Dean (Bernie) Noland of Alamo, Grace Plankers of Cloquet and Jim (Jean) Noland of Clearwater, Minn.; and many, many grand-, great-grand-, and great-great-grandchildren.

Orville "JR" Griffin
Orville "JR" Griffin, 59, of the Nine Mile Corner area of Grand Rapids died Sunday, June 10, 2001, in his home. For the past 45 years, "JR" worked at the Nine Mile Corner Restaurant and Bar, located nine miles south of Grand Rapids.
He is survived by a brother, Wilbur (Chris) O'Dell; special friends, Kathy and Rick Eastman; and all his great friends.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday with a 1 p.m. funeral Friday in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Art Wills
Art Wills, 64, lifelong resident of Barnum died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake.
Born Aug. 15, 1936, in Barnum to Arthur L. and Ruth (Barrington) Wills, Art married Lois (Norman) Wills May 29, 1957, in Split Rock Township. He was a council member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Barnum, a member of the Skelton Town Board, a state fire warden, and was on the Carlton County Road and Bridge committee. Art was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a marvelous baby sitter for his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Leslie Wills and Lawrence Wills; and a sister, Elsie Thomas.

Art is survived by his wife, Lois, of Barnum; children Debbie Wills of Barnum, Dawn (Marty) Larson of Barnum, Dean (Karen) Wills of Cloquet; grandchildren Mandy (Jake), Katelyn, Kristen, Cole, Lauren and Nathan; great-grandchildren Alyssa and Dylan; brothers, Bob (Lucy) of Barnum and Harvey Wills of Babbitt; sisters Helen (Clarence) Folstad of Soudan, Elanor (Lawrence) Fralich of Silver Bay, Dorothy Gottschalk of Clearwater, Fla., and Alta Rogers of Barnum; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake and continuing from 1 until the 2 p.m. service Monday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Barnum, the Rev. Larry La Dassor officiating. Burial in Emmanuel Lutheran cemetery, Barnum. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

Edna J. Johnson
Edna J. Johnson, 84, of Cloquet died peacefully Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Cloquet Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 1, 1917, to Axel and Hilma (Peterson) Johnson in Cloquet. She attended Cloquet schools. She married Arvo Johnson Dec. 24, 1945, in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Edna was a member of the Ladies Auxiliaries of the Cloquet Eagles Club, Moose Lodge and VFW. She retired from Diamond Brands in 1978.

She was preceded death by her husband in 1968; her parents; an infant sister, Rosemond; and brothers Clarence, Willard and Delbert Johnson.

She is survived by a daughter, Carol Kolodge of Cloquet; grandchildren Michelle (Marty Oleary) Kolodge, Joseph M. (Susan Cook and her children Jessie, Melissa, and Lindsey) Kolodge and Kurt (Amy) Kolodge, all of Cloquet; great-grandchildren Joshua and Justin Kolodge; a brother, Kenneth (Margaret) Johnson of Cloquet; and a sister, Shirley (Don) Christensen of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; brothers- and sisters-in-law Helen Johnson and Bernice Johnson, both of Cloquet, Allen (Frances) Johnson of Duluth, Marion (Don) Seabury of Cloquet and Lorraine (Frank) Szumlas of Chicago; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 204 Eighth St., Cloquet. Interment in Apostolic Lutheran cemetery, Esko. Arrangements by Wefelmeyer-Handevidt Funeral Home, 1506 Washington Ave., Cloquet, 879-6741.
