Samuel J. Drlaca
Samuel J. Drlaca, 59, of Hibbing died Saturday, July 7, 2001, in Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi.
He was born July 31, 1941, to Kelly and Anne Drlaca in Hibbing. He grew up and attended school in Hibbing. He entered the Navy, serving for four years until his honorable discharge. He worked at Eveleth Taconite for 30 years until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kelly; and his wife, Ginny.

He is survived by his wife, Linnea; a daughter, Heather Drlaca of Bemidji; a son, Steve Drlaca of Lino Lakes, Minn.; his mother, Anne Drlaca of Hibbing; brothers Bernard (Michelle) Drlaca and John (Donna) Drlaca, both of Hibbing; sisters Pat (Joe) Pecharich of Chisholm, Barbara (Bob) Gherardi of Hibbing and Maryann Drlaca of Hibbing; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Mary Kay of Chisholm.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Range Funeral Home, Hibbing. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing.

James E. Kinney
James E. Kinney, 52, of Eveleth died Saturday, July 7, 2001, in Fairview University Center, Minneapolis.
He was born July 27, 1948, in Virginia to Howard and Shirley (Waits) Kinney. He lived in Hibbing until moving to Eveleth in 1967. He graduated from Hibbing High School and married Mary Beth Rosati on Aug. 10, 1967, in Superior. He was a senior coordinator at LTV/Erie Mining for 34 years.

He was a downhill skier and an avid race car driver and mechanic. He served as a consultant-adviser for the Mountain Iron-Buhl High School Chassis Set-up Team and other racing teams. He held the track record at Hibbing Raceway for the most consecutive feature wins, and he won several awards at the Hibbing High School for ski jumping. He was a loving and caring son, husband, father, brother and friend.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Bruce Kinney in 1978; his grandparents; father-in-law Guido Rosati in 1996; and sister-in-law Sharon Kinney in 1999.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth of Eveleth; daughter Barbara Kinney (Ronald Erjavec) of Eveleth; his mother, Shirley Kinney of Virginia; his father, Howard G. (Dorothy) Kinney of Chisholm; sisters Gail (Randy) Daniels of Buyck and Sharon Stanaway of Virginia; brothers Gary Kinney of Mountain Iron and Darrell (Jean) Kinney of Duluth; his mother-in-law, Mary of Duluth; sisters-in-law Roberta (Jerry) Rozinka of Eveleth and Stephanie (Scott) Harmon of Duluth; brothers-in-law James Rosati (Marit Lynse) of Minneapolis and David (Gail) Rosati of Eagan, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles, and friends.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and memorial service 1 p.m. Thursday in United Methodist Church in Eveleth, the Rev. Shirley Bergeron officiating. Inurnment in Eveleth cemetery.

Lucy K. Smolke
Lucy K. Smolke, 88, of Grand Rapids died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at the Itasca Medical Center in Grand Rapids.
She is survived by sons Frank, Edward, Joseph and John Smolke; a sister, Rose Andreachi; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, with wake prayer service at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Grand Rapids, the Rev. Thomas Radaich officiating. Burial in Itasca-Calvary cemetery, Grand Rapids.

John H. Swanberg
John H. Swanberg, 75, of Solon Springs died Sunday, July 8, 2001.
He is survived by a brother, Frank (Loretta); and sisters Ethel Gibbs and Vivian (Fred) Khalar.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. celebration of life service Wednesday in Brown Funeral Home, Solon Springs. Interment in Evergreen cemetery, Solon Springs.

Paul D. Roberts
Paul D. Roberts, 49, of Foxboro, Wis., died unexpectedly Friday, July 6, 2001.
Paul was a field service engineer for ABB Inc.

He is survived by his mother, Albertha of Amery, Wis.; his wife, Jean of Foxboro; sons John of Madison, Wis., and Brian of Superior; a daughter, Dawn of Duluth; sisters Marcia Bean of Las Vegas, Marie Lange of Amery and Karen Nielsen of New Richmond, Wis.; brothers Mark (Barb) of Amery and Bruce (Marcia) of Star Prairie, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Service: 11 a.m. today in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Amery. Service of remembrance 6 p.m. Wednesday in Pattison State Park shelter. Arrangements by Williamson Funeral Home, Amery, (715) 268-7111.

Dorothy Lenore Bolander
Dorothy Lenore Bolander, 88, of Cloquet died Saturday, July 7, 2001, in Cloquet Nursing Home.
She was born in Blackhoof Valley on May 11, 1913, the eldest of five children of Lage and Flossy Olson. She was educated in Blackhoof Valley School. Dorothy met and married Drew Bolander in 1934. After a brief time in Cloquet, they farmed in Blackhoof, Minn., where they farmed until retirement in 1967, returning to Cloquet.

Dorothy's main interest was caring for her family. Her other hobbies were photography, sewing, gardening and genealogy. She left several volumes of family history and many hand-sewn quilts as treasured gifts for her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Drew in 1971; her daughter, Ardell Reed; her son, Bernie; her parents, Lage and Flossy Olson; her brother, Vernon in childhood; her sister, Vivian; and her grandsons, Paul Beard, Jerry Bolander and Tim Reed.

She is survived by her children, Marlene (Dick) Beard of Kenora, Ontario, Betty (Cliff) Linder and Karen (Mike Vatalaro) Bolander of Duluth; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn (Lawrence) Tischer of Rochester, Minn.; a brother, Merle (Eileen) Olson of DeLeon Springs, Fla.; and their families.
Visitation: noon until the 2 p.m. service today in Wefelmeyer-Handevidt Funeral Home, 1506 Washington Ave., Cloquet, (218) 879-6741. Interment will follow at Sandy Lake cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Elim Lutheran Church of Blackhoof, 2077 Co. Road 6, Barnum, MN 55707.

Violet Wozniakowski
Violet Wozniakowski, 76, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Bigfork and Chicago, died Friday, July 6, 2001.
Visitation: 10:30 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Carroll Funeral Home, Bigfork. Burial in Woodlawn cemetery, Forest Park, Ill.

Earl Albert "Al" Naslund
Earl Albert "Al" Naslund, 90, of Two Harbors died Saturday, July 7, 2001, in Lake View Home.
He ws born May 28, 1911, to John and Mary (Buskala) Naslund in the Stewart area near Two Harbors, where he grew up. He graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1929 and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. He was a co-owner of O&N; Oil Co. from 1937 until his retirement in 1969. He was also an inspector for the Minnesota State Patrol for three summers.

He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Two Harbors, the Vasa Lodge, and a former member of the Moose and the Sons of Norway. He was a lifelong musician and was leader and accordionist in the former "Old Timers Band" for many years.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Tyyne in 1982; a son, Keith in 1994; brothers Art, Bill, Roy, Carl and Ray; and sisters Lillian Bergren and Helen Noren.

He was loved and will be sadly missed by a son, Gary (Joyce) of Andover, Minn.; daughters Kathryn (Ken) Costley and Shirley (Denis) Hansen, both of Eau Claire; daughter-in-law Bette Naslund of Coon Rapids; brothers Robert of Two Harbors and Darrell of Placentia, Calif.; a sister, Grace Doda of Whittier, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, June Johnson of Two Harbors.
Visitation: 1 until the 3 p.m. service Friday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Two Harbors. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Elaine M. Hopperton
Elaine M. Hopperton, 82, of Grand Rapids died Sunday, May 20, 2001, in Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Sauk Rapids, Minn.
She is survived by her son, Roger (Kim) Hopperton of Sartell, Minn.; grandchildren Andrea Lynn, Zoey and Tristan Hopperton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 4-7 p.m. today in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. Service at 11 a.m. Thursday in Community Presbyterian Church, Grand Rapids. Burial in Itasca-Calvary cemetery.

Eva Okal
Eva Okal, 80, of Hesperia, Calif., formerly of Virginia, died Monday, May 14, 2001, in her home.
She is survived by a brother, Steve (Ruth) Sarak; and five nieces and nephews.
Graveside service: 9 a.m. Saturday in Chisholm cemetery, the Very Rev. Father Bogdan Zjalic officiating. Arrangements by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Chisholm.

Thomas G. Madich
Thomas G. Madich, 44, of Buhl died Sunday, May 20, 2001, in his home.
He is survived by his daughter, Renee Wheatman; his mother, Mildred; his brothers and sisters Daniel R., Robert M. (Candace), Darlene (Albert) Vesel, Michael J. (Chenda), Margaret (David) Fredricks and Lisa (Mark) Brusacoram; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial Mass today in St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Arrangements by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Chisholm.

Pavel Zima
Pavel Zima, 74, longtime resident of Hibbing, died Monday, May 21, 2001, in his home.
He was born April 23, 1927, in Vizovice, Moravia, in Czech Republic, the son of Pavel and Kristina (Zimova) Zima. He immigrated in 1951 and attended Lafayette College in Easton, Penn., on scholarships, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in mine engineering. Pavel was a veteran of the Army, serving with the 101st Airborne Division during the Korean War. He lived on the East Coast and in Cuba prior to moving to Hibbing.

He was employed as a mine engineer and mineralogist by Pittsburgh Pacific in Hibbing and was a member of many mining and engineering organizations. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Hibbing, an avid stamp and coin collector, and enjoyed a good cigar. He was proud of his Czech heritage and traveled to Eastern Europe and the Czech Republic. During his retirement he devoted his time to researching Middle European history through stamp collecting.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pavel is survived by his daughters Christine (Mark) Giancola of Blaine, Minn., and Sue (William) Albrecht of Linwood, Minn.; a son, David Zima of California; and grandchildren Anthony and Daniel Giancola and Matthew Albrecht.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Sunday in First Presbyterian Church in Hibbing, interim Pastor Margaret Z. Morris officiating. Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church.
