Richard John "Dick" Nephew
Richard John "Dick" Nephew, 75, of South 70th Avenue West, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2001, in his home, surrounded by his family, when the angels came to take him to live in eternity with his wife of more than 50 years and The Father.
He was born Nov. 17, 1925, to Louis and Arla (Lindfors) Nephew. He lived most of his life in Duluth. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific aboard the LST 243. He married
Bernice Kunkel in September 1948. He retired from U.S. Steel's Duluth Works in 1972 and then went to work for St. Louis County, first as a jailer and then in roads and maintenance. Dick was leader in the Boy Scouts of America, was active as Little League coach for the Far West league, and did volunteer work with the American Red Cross, teaching swimming and first aid. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, American Legion Post 71, and the former Holy Cross Catholic Church. He served on the Holy Name Society and several church boards.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Parish and had been very active until recently, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and helping with church and school maintenance.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice, on June 8, 2001; his parents; and brothers George (Jum), Maynard and Donald.
He is survived by his children Dale (Chris) of Duluth, John (Rosi) of Proctor, Mary Beth (Jim) Boynton of Proctor, Katherine (Olli) Rahkola of Esko, Bob (Patty) of Duluth, Paul (Paula) of Proctor and Judy (Jeff) Dieryck of Duluth; a brother, Stewart C. "Dugan" (Arlene) Nephew of Esko; a sister, Darelyn Washburn of Duluth; 16 beautiful grandchildren; three wonderful great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 today with a rosary service at 6:30 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel. Funeral Mass at 1 p.m. Monday in St. James Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Charles Flynn and the Rev. Frank J. Benkoski
Frank J. Benkoski, 90, of Moose Lake passed away on Friday, June 29, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.

Rosemary Patricia Kerr, 75, of Hibbing died Friday, June 29, 2001.
She is survived by her son, Clement (Rene) Kerr Jr.; a daughter, Teresa Ramos-Kerr; a sister, Ellen Jensen; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon service Tuesday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing.

Marie Martha (Knoll) Wendland, 86, of Aitkin died Friday, June 29, 2001, in Riverwood Extended Care, Aitkin.

Thora Janice Wheeler
Thora Janice Wheeler, 80, of Remer died Thursday, June 28, 2001, in her home.
She is survived by sons Quinten and Terry; sisters Eleanor Elliott and Emma (James) Morse; a brother, Cecil Bluhm; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and special friend and companion, Mel Berger.
Service: 2 p.m. Monday in Bethany Lutheran Church, Remer, Pastor Alan Hendrickson officiating. Interment at a later date. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.
Emory E. Schiller
Emory E. Schiller, 76, of Two Harbors died Thursday, June 28, 2001, in Lake View Memorial Hospital, Two Harbors.
He is survived by his wife, Maria "Clem" of Two Harbors; son and daughters Gary Schiller, Sandra (Larry) Peterson and Lori Lynch, all of Two Harbors; a sister-in-law, Ruth "Tootsie" Schiller of Two Harbors; grandchildren Lane, Jason, Angela, Adam and David; a great-granddaughter, Angela; niece and nephew Susie and James.

Cordelia Marvin Quick
Cordelia Marvin Quick, 90, of Grand Marais died Friday, June 29, 2001, in the North Shore Care Center, Grand Marais.
She was born June 7, 1911, to Mr. and Mrs. John Walter Marvin in Duluth. She grew up in Duluth, graduated from Central High School and then from Superior State College. She taught in Duluth and married
John Paul Quick on Oct. 22, 1938. They moved to Loon Lake near Grand Marais in 1974, and recently to Grand Marais. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Grand Marais.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Cordelia Mary; and nine brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her husband, John of Grand Marais; a son, David (Helen) Quick of Strafford, Mo.; a granddaughter, Sarah; and many nieces and nephews.
A gathering of friends will take place at 1 p.m. Friday in First Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the organization of your choice. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
Brother Algot "Al" Nasstrom
Brother Algot "Al" Nasstrom, 83, of Hastings, Minn., formerly of Eveleth, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at home.
He was born Jan. 13, 1918, in Sweden to Andrew and Anna (Bolander) Nasstrom. Al served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific. On May 5, 1944, he and Mary Zadnikar were married
in Virginia. In 1958, they moved to Eveleth. Al worked for Minnesota Ontario Paper Co., International Lumber Co., SuperWood in Virginia, Arrow Shirt, and for the MNDOT Sign Department until retiring in 1983. Al had also been a milkman and carpenter.
He enjoyed woodworking and was a member of the International Woodworker Association. He was also a life member of the VFW and the AFL-CIO.
He was the loving husband of Mary; beloved father of Sandra (Gus) Phillipich of Virginia, Minn., Joan (Arthur) Johnson of St. Paul Park, Minn., and Nanette (Peter) Marsh of Cottage Grove, Minn.; loving grandfather of Jody Phillipich, Tammy and Nicole Johnson, Justina and Richard Marsh; two great-grandchildren; brother of Laila Persson and Alfon Nasstrom, both of Sweden.

Johanna Jerina
Johanna Jerina, 88, of Forest Lake, Minn., formerly of Aurora, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, in Fairview Regional Hospital, Wyoming, Minn.
Survivors include daughters Barbara (Rudolph) Gajeski and Patricia Jerina; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday and from 9 until the 10 a.m. service Monday, all in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Aurora. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery, Aurora.
Rosina Lydia Engman
Rosina Lydia Engman, 88, longtime Virginia resident died Thursday, June 7, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 14, 1913, in Watertown, Minn., the daughter of August and Louisa (Lohrke) Dressel. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1931 and graduated from University of Minnesota Duluth with a degree in elementary education. She moved to Virginia in 1936 and married
Albert Engman June 8, 1940, in Wayzata, Minn. She was employed as a teacher in the Eveleth, Parkville and St. Bonifacius Schools. Rosina was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Virginia; and a member of the Fidelis Chapter of the ADK Sorority.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert, in 1958; sisters Dora Dressel, Gertrude Bauer, Lydia Bauer, Cora Lillemo, Sylvia Ketcher and Malinda Logelin; brothers Wilbur, Harry, August, Herbert and Clarence Dressel.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary (John) Burns of Waterloo, Iowa; grandchildren Tara Burns, Shawn (Maria) Burns and Brian Burns; a sister, Alice Soley of Maple Plain, Minn.; a brother, Donald (Margaret) Dressel of Minneapolis; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 4-6 p.m. Sunday in Bauman-Cron Funeral Home, Virginia. Service 1 p.m. Monday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Virginia, Pastor Walter L. Brill officiating. Interment follows in Greenwood cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Loren G. Moe
Loren G. Moe, 72, of Lawrence Lake died Thursday, June 7, 2001, in the Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
Born April 28, 1929, in Guthrie, Minn., he was the son of Gust and Freda (Steel) Moe. Tie grew up and attended school in Guthrie, Bemidji and Nary, Minn. Loren lived most of his life in the Lawrence Lake area. Loren and Lorraine Ward (Hurlbut) were married
in August 1972 in Grand Rapids. Loren was a heavy equipment operator for the Hanna Mining Co. for over 20 years, worked for a time at General Motors in New York, attended the Balsam Bible Chapel, was a former member of the Bovey Moose Lodge, was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels, and was a member of the Balsam Senior Citizens.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gust and Freda Moe; his wife, Lorraine, March 22, 2001; and brothers Alfred and Kenneth.
Survivors include a sister, Shirley (Bud) Greer of Lawrence Lake; brothers Everett (Elaine) Moe of Depew, N.Y., Wesley (Pat) Moe of Bovey, Glenn Moe of Lancaster, N.Y., and Kermit (Paulette) Moe of Glencoe, Minn.; stepchildren Doug Hurlbut of Cohasset, Michael Hurlbut of Grand Rapids, Kenneth (Lisa) Hurlbut and Bonnie (Richard) Bilyeu, both of Bovey; 15 step grandchildren; and 12 step great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine, the Rev. Frank Knoop officiating.
Floyd E. Rueckert
Floyd E. Rueckert, 82, of Grand Rapids died Thursday, June 7, 2001, in the Itasca Nursing Home, Grand Rapids.
Survivors include daughters Cindy (Jim) Ridley of Grand Rapids and Barb (Glen) Bergstrom of Arlington, Wash.; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and seven step great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Arnleend of Dassel, Minn.; and a brother, Don Anderson of Ames, Iowa.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Monday in Grand Rapids United Methodist Church. Burial in Harris Township cemetery. Military honors accorded by Grand Rapids Area Veterans.
