GERTRUDE M. (GUSTAFSON) MARTIN
Gertrude M. (Gustafson) Martin, 87, of Hibbing died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001.
Survivors include her husband, Jim; sons Dale (Andrea) Gustafson and John (Gail) Martin; a daughter, Merle Martin DeNuccio; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in First Presbyterian Church, Hibbing. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing. Arrangements by Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home, Hibbing.
PETER PAUL SHEREK
Peter Paul Sherek, 93, of Biwabik died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; sons Robert (Mary) and Donald (Charlene); 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; brothers Louis and Frank (Irene).

ALBIN J. JASOVEC
Albin J. Jasovec passed away Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001.
He was born Sept. 10, 1928, to Anna (Kulhavy) and Frank Jasovec in Tripp. S.D. He came to this area when 9 years old and attended Ely Schools. He worked in the Zenith Mine and served two years with the Army during the Korean War. After being discharged, he worked for various construction firms and the last 13 years until his retirement in 1994 as an employee of Lake County.
Survivors include sisters Anna Mae (Louis) Kasie of Duluth, Frances (Robert) Zgonc of Las Vegas, their families and special friend, Margaret Wood.

ROBERT "BROTHER" LEE BARNES
Robert "Brother" Lee Barnes, 60, of Deer River died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in Duluth.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Monday in Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River. Service 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Deer River. Burial in Olivet cemetery, Morse Township.
GENEVIEVE PARISH HAMLIN
Genevieve Parish Hamlin, 87, of Overland Park, Kan., formerly of Moose Lake died and entered eternal rest Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in Manor Health Care Center, Overland Park, Kan.
Survivors include her husband, Wesley; daughters Penelope (Arnold) Vorster of Corte Madera, Calif., and Brenda (Gary) Kelley of Lenexa, Kan.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake. Burial in Sunset Memorial cemetery, Moose Lake.
JACOB "JACK" LAMPE
Jacob "Jack" Lampe, 97, passed away Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, in the Amistad Nursing Home in Uvalde, Texas.
The cause was pneumonia and general weakness. Jack was born Jan. 4, 1904, in Eveleth to Ida and John Lampe. He was captain of the Eveleth High School football team in the 1920s. He was well known in the community as a violinist and played in many marching and dance bands. At Yale, he was a member of the football team and the DKE fraternity. After graduating in 1929, he returned to the Range area and served as a court clerk in Virginia. Later he moved to New York City and received a master's degree from Columbia University in education. His career was varied and included work as a professional musician for Broadway shows, public school teacher and franchise operator. He retired as a travel agent in New York City at the age of 85. Upon retirement, he located in Ocala, Fla., but moved in 1996 to Uvalde, Texas, to live near the home of a nephew. Until four months ago, when he broke a leg and had to have a hip replacement, his life was pleasant at a retirement home in Uvalde.
He enjoyed keeping up with his family, following events in American politics and supporting the Minnesota Vikings. His wife, Julia Lackner Lampe of Virginia, pre-deceased him. Jack will be inurned next to his wife in Virginia.
He is survived by his sister, Violet Knuti of Fairfax, Va., as well as many nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren.

JOHN DONALD GIORGI JR.
John Donald Giorgi Jr., 69, of Hibbing died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in St. Luke's's hospital, Duluth.
He was born Sept. 16, 1932, in Virginia, to John and Anna (Jedda) Giorgi. He was a graduate of Mountain Iron High School.
John was the owner of Giorgi & Sons Landscaping in Mountain Iron for 16 years. He was president of the Nichols Town Board, and mayor of Mountain Iron from 1971 to 1977. He also worked one year for U.S. Steel, and 23 years for the Mountain Iron School District as a bus driver, garage foreman and union president. He spent 21 years with AFSCME Co. 65 starting as a business agent and rising to the position of executive director. John watched the council grow from a little over 1,000 members to more than 8,000 members during his tenure. His love of helping people, family and friends made him an admired leader in the union community.
From 1995 to 1998 John served on the AFSCME International Judicial Panel where he traveled across the country to rule on local union disputes. John attended numerous AFSCME international conventions and was most fond of his involvement and settlement of the Itasca County strike.
Following his retirement, John enjoyed fishing, traveling with his loving wife, Tina, and cooking for family get-togethers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Mike Jurkovich.
He is survived by his wife: Christina; a daughter, Kathy Giorgi; sons Steve (Delanie), Brian (Missy), Keith (Sandy), and Todd (Kris) Giorgi; a stepson, Richard (Wendy) Bittner; stepdaughters Valerie (Tim) McKee, and Christina (Cameron) Lundblad; a sister, Esther Jurkovich; brothers Richard (Ann) and Jim (Merge) Giorgi; grandchildren Willie, Destry, Brianna, Kyle, Arianna, Maddison, Mia; step grandchildren Meghan, Ryan and Tommy; numerous nieces and nephews.
MEMORIAL SERVICE:11 a.m. Tuesday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hibbing, the Rev. Erik Holloque officiating. Inurnment at a later date in Calvary cemetery, Virginia.
Family services provided by Anderson-Daniels, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Hibbing.
RICHARD B. "DICK" JARVINEN
Richard B. "Dick" Jarvinen, 55, of Maple, Wis., died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
He was born in Superior July 24, 1946, to Bruno and Mae (Forsi) Jarvinen.
Richard graduated from Northwestern High School, Maple. He served his country in the Army. He worked for more than 30 years with the Ford Motor Co. in St. Paul before his retirement. He had lived in the St. Paul area for 30 years before returning to the Maple area. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union and was avid sportsman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Karen Booth.
Richard is survived by a sister, Carol (Pete) Coda of Duluth; a close friend who cared for Dick during his illness, Art Carrie of Maple; one nephew and three nieces.
Visitation: begins 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home where it continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday, Pastor Gerald Preshun officiating. Interment in the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran cemetery, Maple.
PAUL JACOB KUUSISTO
Paul Jacob Kuusisto, 68, of Hibbing died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; sons Gary (Sue Chicos), Richard (Lynn), Ted (LaRae) and David (Julie); a daughter, Lisa Kuusisto; sisters Elizabeth Kuusisto and Patricia (Guy) Greene; and four grandchildren.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Grace Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.
WILLIAM "BILL" KIRWIN
William "Bill" Kirwin, 51, of Grand Rapids died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at his property on River Road.
He is survived by his wife, Carla (Paskey) Kirwin; daughters Kelly Kirwin and Brook Kirwin; his mother, Cecelia Kirwin; sisters Kathy Omberg, Colette Sikkila and Carol Stenger; a brother, Kent Kirwin; 14 nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 4-7 p.m. with a wake prayer service at 5 p.m. Monday in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. Memorial Mass 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Grand Rapids.
JOHN HARVEY SORENSON
John Harvey Sorenson, 44, of Port Wing died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in Port Wing.
He was born June 14, 1957, in Duluth to John and Arlene (Grew) Sorenson. He has been a Port Wing resident for the past 14 years. He served in the Navy and was a self-employed contractor. John was a loving husband, father, son, and brother and was an avid fisherman. He married
Kathy Jardine in Washburn on June 12, 1996, and recently celebrated five years of marriage.
John was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Lee Sorenson; a brother, Richard Daniel Sorenson; his maternal grandparents, Harvey and Alice Grew; and his paternal grandparents, Carl and Violet Sorenson.
In addition to his wife Kathy, he is survived by his daughters, Jenna and Morgan, both at home; a son, Connor, at home; his mother, Arlene (Lowell) Cobb of Duluth; his father, John (Becky) Sorenson of Spooner; a sister, LuAnne (Tony) Miltakis of Duluth; eight nephews; three nieces; a stepbrother; and a stepsister.
Visitation: 2 until the 2:30 p.m. memorial service Saturday in First Lutheran Church, Port Wing, the Rev. James Kasperson officiating. Arrangements by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior.
