Julian G. Pfannenstein, 76, of Cohasset, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, in his home.

Visitation: 9 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in St. Augustine's Catholic Church, Cohasset.

Arrangements by Carroll Funeral Home.

JOHN L. SAXHAUG
John L. Saxhaug, 79, lifelong resident of Grand Rapids died peacefully at his home Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001.
He graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1940 and attended Carleton College. John served with the 741st Tank Battalion in World War II, was a veteran of Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart.

John was united in marriage to Virginia West in Mora on Sept. 28, 1946. He worked in insurance, real estate, finance businesses, and in 1972 founded the John L. Saxhaug Co.

He was a member of Community Presbyterian Church. He was past president of Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, past commander of American Legion Post 60, and served on boards of directors for Northland Mental Health, Hope House and H.E.A.R.T.

Surviving family includes his wife, Ginny; sons Tom (Nancy) of Grand Rapids and John of St. Paul; a daughter, Ann Saxhaug (David Beghly) of Golden Valley, Minn.; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Catherine (Gerald) Anderson of Scottsdale, Ariz.
Visitation: 4-6 p.m. today in Community Presbyterian Church, where the 11 a.m. memorial service will be held Saturday. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, (218) 326-4000.

SHARON LANDRUS
Sharon Landrus, 61, of Palisade died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in Riverwood Health Care Center, Aitkin.
Visitation: 4-7 p.m. today and continues from 10:30 until the 11:30 a.m. service Saturday in Sorenson-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.

MARVIN DEAN SHANK
Marvin Dean Shank, 50, of Askov passed from this life Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in Pine Medical Center, Sandstone.
He was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, on Sept. 19, 1951, to Marvin Leroy and Josie Holubar Shank. He moved to Kerrick at age 13 in 1964. He attended Askov High School. Marvin worked construction and drove truck. For the past 24 years, he was an auto mechanic at the Askov Deep Rock station. Marv and his family lived in Kerrick on the family farm prior to moving to Askov in 1991. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting deer and fishing. Marv's greatest enjoyment came when he spent time with his kids baling hay, cutting wood and framing up his new shop. He had attained the age of 50 years and 20 days when he passed on.

He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Leroy.

Marvin will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 24 years, Kym; his children, Kerry (Rita) Shank of Colton S.D., Shannon (Steve) Foss of St. Paul; Kelly (Michelle) Shank of Sandstone, Tara (Tom) Osuna of Sacramento, Calif., Nick Shank of Askov and Jason Shank of St. Paul; and his mother, Josie Shank of Barnum; 11 grandchildren; brothers Eddie, Jerry and Danny Shank; a sister, Chris (Dale) Storebo; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends; and many uncles and aunts in Iowa. Blessed be his memory.
Visitation: Noon until the 2 p.m. service today in Askov Community Center. Interment in Riverside cemetery, Kerrick. Interment in Riverside cemetery, Kerrick. Arrangements by Hansen's North Pine Funeral Home of Sandstone, (320) 245-5323.

CALVIN L. CARLSON
Calvin L. Carlson, 77, of Babbitt died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 19, 1924, in Virginia to Alfin and Minnie (Johnson) Carlson. He grew up and attended school in Hibbing, graduating in 1942. He attended a year of college before entering the Marine Corps. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After returning from the war, he stayed in California to play semi-professional hockey for a year. He returned to Minnesota in 1946, and was united in marriage to Helen Arts on June 14, 1946, in Hibbing. Following marriage, the couple made their home in Hibbing. Calvin worked for Oliver Mining Co., Susqueshaha, Furlong Oil Co., Borchert Ingersoll Co., and AAA Insurance. In 1960, they moved to Hoyt Lakes, where he worked for Prudential Insurance. In 1961, the couple moved to Babbitt, where he worked for Reserve Mining until his retirement in 1986.

Calvin was a life member of VFW Post 1539 of Babbitt and a former commander of American Legion Post 535 of Babbitt. He also served on the Babbitt Credit Union Board. He was an avid bowler and golfer.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Maureen Carlson and Doris Negri; brothers Russell, Milton, Myron, Ronald and Robert Carlson; and his parents.

Calvin is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen; his daughter, Joann (Robert) Carlson of Embarrass; his son, Charles (Michelle) Carlson of Lewisberry, Pa.; grandchildren Jeff (Hope) Saranpaa of St. Cloud, Minn., Karey Carlson of Kimberton, Pa., Julee Saranpaa of Duluth, and Molly and Bryan Carlson, both of Lewisberry, Pa.; sisters Betty (Jim) Falbo of Hibbing, Joan Bloomquist of Virginia, Marlene Simberg of Hibbing and Nancy (Jim) Ott of Quincy, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. celebration of life Saturday in St. Pius Catholic Church, Babbitt. Burial will take place at a later date in Argo cemetery. Arrangements by Range Funeral Home.

JOSEPH J. "KREXER" ERCHUL
Joseph J. "Krexer" Erchul, 89, of Tower died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Virginia Senior Living Community.
He was born Nov. 23, 1911, in Soudan, the son of Joseph and Clara (Stepan) Erchul. He married Margaret C. Knapp onJan. 21, 1935, in Ely and was a longtime Tower-Soudan resident. He was employed by the Oliver Mining Co., for 34 years, Reserve Mining Co. for nine years, Vermilion Landfill Authority, and in the 1940s, they owned and operated the Vermilion Cafe in Tower.

Joe was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union of America, Eagles Nest Senior Citizens, was a chairman and vice-chairman of the Northwoods Senior Citizens and Retired Miner's Association and served on Parish Council for St. Martin's Catholic Church. Joe was an alderman for the city of Tower and an honored senior citizen in 1986. He and his wife started the Tower Food Shelf in 1981.

He had a zeal for the outdoors and loved to hunt, especially deer hunting. Joe was an avid fisherman and never missed an opener. He dearly loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joe was a great storyteller and delighted everyone with his tales.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret in 1995; his parents, Joseph and Clara Erchul; brothers Frank, Frederick and John; sisters Margaret and Clara; and a granddaughter, Mary Noel Plevell.

He is survived by his daughters, Carol (Louis) Plevell of Hastings, Minn., Donna (James) Stauber of Virginia and Beverly (Donald) Reed of Lake Vermilion-Tower; sisters Rose Kauchick of Gilbert and Julia Mavetz of Ely; grandchildren Monique (David) Marshall, Louis (Alicia) Plevell, Julieanne (Gerald) Silhol, Margaret (Rus) Stauber-Bel, Lizabeth (Jeff) Johnson, Frederick Stauber, Charles (Deborah) Reed and Thomas (Krista) Reed; great-grandchildren Alexandra, Jacob and Jordan Marshall, and Abigail Reed; a niece; and several nephews.
Visitation: 9:30 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday with a 9:30 a.m. rosary recitation in St. Martin's Catholic Church, Tower, the Rev. Father Rudolph Pakiz as celebrant. Interment in Lakeview cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or St. Martin's Catholic Church. Arrangements by Bauman-Vermilion, a Bauman Family Funeral Home, Tower.

ERNEST SOLIDAY
Ernest Soliday, 71, of Deer River died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Deer River.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Saturday in Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River. Burial in Valparaiso, Ind.

EDITH E. NITTLER
Edith E. Nittler, 90, of Chisholm, formerly of Yates Center, Kan., died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001.
Survivors include her children, Cora Mae (Donald) Perry, Fredrick (Clara) Nittler, Robert (Beverly) Nittler, Glen (Carolyn) Nittler and Paulette Sue Nittler; a son-in-law; a sister; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 1:30 until the 2 p.m. service Sunday in Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service Chapel. Inurnment in Yates Center cemetery at a later date.

JEAN CAROL HOFF
Jean Carol Hoff, 57, of Aitkin died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in her home.
She is survived by her loving husband, Ralph; daughters Nina Berglund, Liane (Chad) Kolaskie, Jodi (Mike) Biehler and Jenny (Roger) Gonsorowski; sons David (Jami) Berglund and Michael Hoff; a brother, Richard Bluhm; and five grandchildren.
Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Saturday in Koop Funeral Home, Crosby and continues from 12:30 until the 1:30 p.m. service Sunday in Cascade United Methodist Church, Deerwood.

PHOEBE V. WALLER
Phoebe V. Waller, 97, formerly of Port Wing, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, in Northern Lights Health Care, Washburn.
She was born Feb. 14, 1904, in Port Wing to Frederick and Regina Larson. She graduated from the Chenults School of Beauty, working as a beautician in Tucson, Ariz., for many years. In 1974, she returned to Port Wing after living in Tucson for 30 years.

Phoebe was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert; her parents; four sisters; and eight brothers.

She is survived by her son, Allen (Tommie) Waller of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; grandchildren Dale (Cathy) Waller of Randalia, Iowa, Christopher Waller of Durango, Colo., and Lucinda Waller and Susan (Jerry) Ackerman, both of Tucson; six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Margaret Larson; a brother-in-law, Rudy Morrison; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in First Lutheran Church, Port Wing, the Rev. James Kasperson officiating. Interment in Greenwood cemetery, Port Wing. Arrangements by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior.

DEAN E. BERGMAN
Dean E. Bergman died in the peace of his home and the comfort of his family Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001.
He was born to Esther and Edward Bergman on April 16, 1923, in Two Harbors. Dean attended Two Harbors High School and worked for the DM&IR; Railway from 1947 until his retirement in 1983. Dean married his wife of 54 years, Annie Ganser, on June 14, 1947.

Dean was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Moose and United Train Workers Union, and past chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. Dean loved farming and the outdoors, and could often be seen riding his tractor in his fields.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin sister, Jean; sister AnnaMae; brothers Raymond, Carl, Fred; and infant brother Bobby.

Besides Annie, he leaves his sons, Richard, Paul and Clyde (Carolyn); a daughter, Jo-Ann (David) Rossetter; grandchildren Matthew, James, Reed, Sara, Christina and Jessica; a sister, Lois Sand; and brothers Donald (Lorraine) and Clifford (Dorothy), all of Two Harbors.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors. Service at 1 p.m. Friday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Two Harbors. Burial in Lakeview cemetery.

MARY A. REPP
Mary A. Repp, 98, of Ely died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, in Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital.
She was born June 24, 1903, in Steelton, Pa., to John and Mary (Pavlicich) Boben. She was a member of the Slovenian Women's Union of America.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister Anne; sister Angela "Gallie" Schultz; brothers John and Tony Boben; her first husband, Louis Kotzian Sr.; her second husband, Frank Repp; and a son, Louis Kotzian Jr.

Survivors include her daughter, Alice (Ignace) Hren of Ely; brothers Albin "Beanie" (Gerry) Boben of Palo, Eddie (Betty) Boben of Euclid, Ohio, and Louis Boben of Mankato, Minn.; sister Jean Drenser of Willowich, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Florence Kotzian of Ely; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. Thursday in Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely. Inurnment in Forest Hill cemetery, Aurora.
