ANTHONY M. ZLONIS
Anthony M. Zlonis, 83, of Mountain Iron died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, in Virginia Regional Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 20, 1918, in Chisholm to Walter and Mary (Glenn) Zlonis. He graduated from Chisholm High School and the University of Minnesota. Before the Pearl Harbor attack, he worked for Oliver Iron Mining Co., in Hibbing. He was a former Minnesota state highway patrolman and an assistant field director for the ANRC. He and his wife owned and operated restaurants in Virginia and Mountain Iron.
Anthony was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands, served in the Korean War and retired from the service as a captain. He was a life member and past commander of Yoki-Bergman American Legion Post 220 of Mountain Iron and was a past exalted ruler of the Eveleth Elks Lodge. He retired from St. Louis County Social Services as a supervisor in the Virginia Courthouse.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gretchen, on Nov. 18, 1995; his parents; two brothers; and a sister.
Anthony is survived by a brother, Frank (Elma) Zlonis of Chisholm; and nieces and nephews.
PRIVATE FAMILY SERVICES will be held in Fort Snelling National cemetery, Minneapolis, with military rites accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Arrangements by Landmark Funeral Home, Virginia.
JACQUELINE L. JOHNSON
Jacqueline L. Johnson, 53, of McGregor, formerly of Blaine, Minn., died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, in her home.
SERVICE: 2 p.m. Thursday in McGregor Funeral Home, McGregor. Burial in Round Lake cemetery, north of McGregor. Arrangements by McGregor Funeral Home.
ALFRED "BUD" SIEGEL
Alfred "Bud" Siegel, 79, of Grand Rapids died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, in Homestead Nursing Home, Deer River.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel; daughters Kathe Johnson and Lori Sondergaard; sisters Helen Schlader, Ione Rudd, Augusta Kyllonen, Adeline Rajala, Dorothy Larson and Bonnie Adams; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

PATRICIA R. BACHAND
Patricia R. Bachand, 84, of Washburn passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2001.
Survivors include her children, Shirley Thoen, John "Tom" (Shirley), Kathleen (Raymond) Guski, Stephen (Debra), Joseph (Jane) and Dennis (Jacque); 26 grandchildren; 34 great-granchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; four siblings; and other relatives.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday in Bratley Funeral Home, Washburn, and from 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Friday in St. Louis Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary cemetery.
Sylvester C. Hursh
Sylvester C. Hursh, 95, of Poplar, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at his residence.
He is survived by his sons, Nels (Carol) Hursh, Superior, and Sylvester (Irene) Hursh and Joe (Linda) Hursh, both of Poplar; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

John W. Heikkila
John W. Heikkila, 80, of Babbitt, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, in his home.
He was born Sept. 17, 1920, in Embarrass at the home of his parents, John and Aliina (Ylitalo) Heikkila.
He attended school in Embarrass until ninth grade and went on to farming and driving school bus. He was a truck mechanic for Reserve Mining Co. in Babbitt from 1955 to 1983.

Norma Thompson on July 7, 1966.
He is survived by his wife, Norma; sons John E., Babbitt, and Dave (Rachel), St. Cloud; stepchildren Gayle (Gregg) Carlson, Minneapolis; Gary (Linda) Nori and Richard (Inge) Nori, all of Aurora, Thomas Nori, Minneapolis, Curtis (Susan) Nori, Memphis, Tenn., and Randy (Pauline) Nori, Princeton, Minn.; brothers Wilho (Helia) and Wilbert; and a sister, Mayme, all of Babbitt; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

L D Evenrude Danielson, 82, of Birchdale died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, in his home.
Survivors include sons Curtis (Cindy), Roger (Janice); daughters Lavina (George) Westerlund, Lois Rauen, Arlys Danielson; a sister, Gertrude Bennett.

THEODORE MCALLASTER "TED" GROVES
Theodore McAllaster "Ted" Groves, 80 of Virginia died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, in Arrowhead Senior Living Community Center.
He was born Feb. 5, 1921, in St. Cloud, Minn., the son of Frederick and Eva (Means) Groves. He graduated from Mountain Iron High School in 1939 and married
Katherine Eleanor Johnson on Nov. 18, 1946, in Virginia. In his youth, Ted was active in the Boy Scouts, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He served in the Army from October 1942 through December 1945 in the Pacific Theater with Company D of the 24th Medical Battalion attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was a partner in the Marmas Bar and Cafe from 1949-1956, an agent for Prudential from 1956-1963, and manager of the Weatherball Insurance Agency in the Norwest Bank from 1963 until his retirement in 1982.
Ted was a member of the Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post 239, Virginia, and Crellin Tini VFW Post 1113 of Virginia. Ted loved working with wood, and enjoyed his time spent at the cabin on Lake Vermilion. His primary love was his family, where he served as caretaker, role model and teacher.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Madge Herrmeyer; and brothers Fred and Robert Groves.
Ted is survived by his wife, Eleanor; sons Larry (Barb) Groves of Eveleth, Jerry (Luck) Groves of Pittsburgh and Gary (Jean) Groves of Hermantown; sisters Beverly (Maurice) Mogensen of Mora, Minn., and Apache Junction, Ariz., and Elizabeth McCubbin of Denver; brothers William (Betty) Groves of Sacramento, Calif., Neil (Marge) Groves of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister-in-law, Muriel (Roy) Olson of Virginia and Bullhead City, Ariz.; grandchildren Cory (Kristi), Casey, Sarah (Jim) Mattson, Michael, Katie, Everett, and Donny Groves; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Thursday in Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pastors Nathan Sager, Clarence Schaffner and Dan Johns officiating. Interment in Greenwood cemetery. MELVIN RUSSELL OMAR
Melvin R. Omar, 77, of Carlton died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Barnum to Albert and Anna (Hall) Omar. He was raised in Barnum and has been a Carlton resident since 1947. Melvin was united in marriage to Beverly Nelson in Cloquet on Aug. 4, 1947. He was a decorated World War II Army veteran, and served in Japan and the Philippines. He was an employee of Northwest Paper Co., and Potlatch as a first class pipe fitter insulator for 40 years, retiring in 1985. After retiring, he became the "right-hand man" for Omar's Sand and Gravel. He was also a member of the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 of Carlton and Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262 of Cloquet.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters Mary and Helen.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Beverly; sons Melvin (Claudia) Omer of Carlton and Doug (Barbara) Omar of Sawyer; a brother, Arlo (Helen) Omer of Duluth; a sister, Beatrice Swenson of Cloquet; his beloved grandchildren, Tammy (Bill) Laitinen, Scott Omer, Wesley Omer, Andrew Omar and Alex Omar; great-granddaughters Emily and April.
Melvin was extremely loved and will be greatly missed.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and service at 2 p.m. Thursday in Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet with full military honors provided by the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 of Carlton. Luncheon will follow in the funeral home reception area. Pallbearers will be his family, Melvin Omer Jr., Doug Omar, Andrew Omar, Alex Omar, Scott Omer and Wesley Omer. ANN EBERT
Ann Ebert, 63, of Meadowlands passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born June 16, 1938, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Otis and Susan (Allen) Gambrel. Ann married
Howard R. Ebert on Oct. 19, 1957, in Duluth. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Meadowlands. Ann loved her family, especially caring for her grandchildren.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Elsie.
She is survived by her loving, supportive husband, Howard; her children, Margie (Jeff) Dunder of Two Harbors, Howard (Michelle) Ebert of Simsbury, Conn., Timothy (Bobbie) Ebert of Colorado Springs, Colo., Rick (Melissa) Ebert and Pam (Jeff) Otten, both of Meadowlands, and Anita (Jay) Holbein of Duluth; and she will be especially missed by her grandchildren, Jesse, Jennifer and JacklynOtten of Meadowlands, Tim Ebert and Mark Cox of Colorado Springs, Caden Ebert of Simsbury, Eric Dunder of Two Harbors, Logan Ebert and Steven Morterud of Meadowlands, and Rachel, Alora and Kevin Holbein of Duluth; a sister, Sue Gambrel of Phoenix; a niece, Susan Kay of Phoenix; a nephew, Nick of Phoenix; and many other family and friends.
MEMORIAL SERVICE:2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Meadowlands, Father Richard Kunst officiating. David John Koski, 61, of Carlton, formerly of Cloquet, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, in Inter-Faith Care Center, Carlton.

WALTER "BUD" ALLEN SAUNDERS
Walter "Bud" Allen Saunders, 70, of Silver Bay passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital in Duluth.
He was born Oct. 12, 1930, in Brainerd to Chester and Eva Saunders. Bud earned Eagle Scout status from the Boy Scouts of America. He was a Korean War veteran. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a bachelor's degree. Bud married
Susan Haskins on July 16, 1955. He lived in Silver Bay since 1955, working for Reserve Mining Co. for 31 years. He enjoyed singing barber shop harmony and was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sue in 2000; and his sister, Connie Luehrs.
Bud is survived by daughters Kim S. (Kevin) Costley of Sartell, Minn., and Kelly S. (Brian) Tofte of Silver Bay; and grandchildren Brittney and Steven Costley, and Abby and Eric Tofte.
