EMELIA A. KOMULAINEN
Emelia A. Komulainen, 93, of Mountain Iron died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, in Arrowhead Senior Living Center, Eveleth.
Emelia was born July 20, 1908, to Matt and Hilda (Anttila) Seppi in Mountain Iron. She grew up in Mountain Iron and graduated from Mountain Iron High School. She also graduated from the former Duluth State Teachers College. She was united in marriage to Einar Komulainen on March 6, 1943, in Mountain Iron. Following marriage, the couple made their home in Mountain Iron. She was a schoolteacher and her teaching career spanned over 33 years, with 15 years spent in the Gilbert School system and 18 years in the Buhl School system. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Mountain Iron.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Einar in 1968; a sister, Sylvia; brothers Wilho, Eino and Ilmer; and her parents.

Survivors include a sister, Eleanor Mathis of San Diego; a brother, T.M. Seppi of Virginia; nieces Claire Seppi, Jane Seppi-Axelson, Carol (Bruce) Nevala, Barb Jacobson, Donna (Scott) Asbach and Patty Mathis; nephews Dick Seppi, Matt (Cherie) Seppi, Jim (Donna) Seppi and Gary Mathis; numerous grand and great-grandnieces and nephews; and special neighbor and caregiver Rhonda LaKosky.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Messiah Lutheran Church, Mt. Iron, the Rev. Kristin M. Foster officiating. Burial in Greenwood cemetery, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Messiah Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Range Funeral Home of Virginia.

EINER JORGENSEN
Einer Jorgensen, 87, of Marcell died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, in Northwoods Care Center, Belvidere, Ill., following an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 25, 1913, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Christian and Mary (Nelsen) Jorgensen. Einer married Isabelle McKenzie on Oct. 2, 1936, in Grand Rapids. He was a self-employed building contractor for 35 years. Before his illness, he had been living with his daughters for the past year.

Einer was a member of Marcell Community Church, Lions Club, Bigfork; Aad Shrine Temple, Duluth; Chippewa Masonic Lodge 295, Deer River; and Scottish Rite Bodies of Minnesota. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and growing beautiful flowers.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and brothers Thorger and Preben Jorgensen.

Einer is survived by his daughters, Janice (Dale) Gorman of Great Falls, Mont., and Joanne (Jack) Nicholson of Caledonia, Ill.; grandchildren Kimberly (Aaron) Rosenbloom of Roscoe, Ill., Chris (Kelly) Gorman of Poulsbo, Wash., Judy (Chris) Harriman of Tuscan, Ariz., Kent (Tamara) Nicholson of Boone, Iowa and Heather Gorman of Santa Cruz, Calif.; seven great-grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.
MEMORIAL SERVICE:11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 in Marcell Community Church, the Rev. Dan Paddock, interim pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Marcell Community Church or Northwoods Care Center. Arrangements by Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Funeral Home, 218 W. Hurlbut Ave., Belvidere, IL 61008.

EDWARD JOHN KARI
Edward John Kari, 92, of Crystal, Minn., formerly of Two Harbors died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001.
He was born April 8, 1909, in Toimi, Minn. He was a self-employed logger for many years, followed by employment by the DM&IR; Railway for a short time, and numerous construction jobs including the building of Reserve Mining Co., and also the breakwater in Two Harbors. He retired in 1972, following an auto accident that left him partially disabled. In July of 1937, he married Ingrid Maki. They made their home in Toimi until moving to Two Harbors in 1958.

Ed was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was always ready to lend a helping hand when needed. He had a great love for the outdoors, especially fishing. He could be seen launching his boat at the breakwater before dawn, up until three years ago. He had a great smile, a wonderful sense of humor and always had the time to stop and chat. We will miss him so much.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ingrid in 1983; his brother; and two sisters.

Ed is survived by daughters Mildred R. (Lester) Blair of Brooklyn Center, Minn., and Dorothy A. Shromoff of Hanahan, S.C.; a sister, Edna Mattson of Fort Wayne, Ind.; grandchildren Douglas (Theresa) Blair of Clear Lake, Minn., Kari Lee Blair of Columbia Heights, Minn., Dr. Paul J. (Kim) Shromoff of Goose Creek, S.C., and Ryan L. (fiancee Tara Sanford) Shromoff of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and great-grandchildren Tiffney, Alysia, Brittany, Tyler, Connor, Emilee and Alec.
Visitation: 12:30 until the 2 p.m. service Wednesday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors.

MARY ELIZABETH SILVERS
Mary Elizabeth Silvers, 11-year-old daughter of Jane E. (Pierce) and Paul T. Silvers of International Falls, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, in Falls Memorial Hospital from injuries due to an accident.
Mary was born Aug. 25, 1990, in International Falls. She was in fifth grade in St. Thomas Aquinas School, where she was an altar server and song leader in the student Mass. Mary was a member of Faith United Church of Christ, where she was a lay reader. She also enjoyed gymnastics, Girl Scouts, playing the piano, writing in her journal, playing in the outdoors, and she loved to organize.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Matthew Paul Silvers; her grandfathers, Stanley Pierce and Ernest Silvers; her uncles, Carter, Stanley Jr., and Rodney Pierce, and Roger and Jeff Silvers; and a cousin, Collin Cox.

Besides Mary's parents, she is survived by her brothers, Erik, Aaron and Caleb, all at home; her grandmothers, Ida Pierce and Anita Silvers, both of International Falls; aunts and uncles Jim (Kit) Silvers, Mike (Melody) Silvers, Evette (Tom) Newman, Kevin (Kim) Silvers; Craig (Julie) Silvers, Brian (Johanna) Silvers, Gene (Judy) Pierce, Burt Pierce, Phyllis Pierce and Gayle (George) Ritola; her godparents, Ralph and Sue Johnson; special friends Brittany Long and Jocie Vance; and many cousins.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today in Faith United Church of Christ. Visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Burial in Birchdale cemetery. Memorials to St. Thomas Aquinas School. Arrangements by Green Larsen Mortuary and Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.

WILLIAM IVER CARLSTROM
William Iver Carlstrom, 79, of Two Harbors died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.
He was born Aug. 23, 1922, to Arvid and Ida (Wiklund) Carlstrom in Two Harbors. During World War II, he served in the Army. He married Frances Verna Merritt on March 5, 1945, and they made their home in Two Harbors, spending 53 years together until Fran's death in 1998. Together they owned and operated Carlstrom Furniture until their retirement.

Iver was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, a 25 year member of the Two Harbors Lions Club, a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge, a member of the Masonic Lodge and Aad Temple Shrine. He enjoyed and was active in community and family events. In 1997, he was named Lake County Outstanding Senior Citizen. He also received the Salvation Army Retirement Award for his active support of community projects.

In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by a brother, John R. Carlstrom, in June.

Iver is survived by his children, Bill (Marilynn) Carlstrom and Linda (John) Symons, both of Two Harbors; grandchildren Mark (Tricia) of Blooming Prairie, Minn., Jenny, Janet, Amy and Jacki, all of Two Harbors, and Marsha of Galveston, Texas; step-grandchildren Brenda (Ron), Krissy, Joni and John, all of Two Harbors; great-grandchildren Carley, Beth, Brianna and Shelby; sisters Alice (Pete) Dempster of Bullhead City, Ariz., and Dorothy Cook of Richfield, Minn.; sisters-in-law Mary Lee Carlstrom of Davenport, Fla., Pat (Donald) Bradley of Campbell, Calif., and Muriel Merritt of Duluth; and a brother-in-law, Paul (Bev) Merritt of Duluth.
SERVICE:11 a.m. Wednesday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Two Harbors. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

MARY J. (BORGEN) GRACE
Mary J. (Borgen) Grace, 72, of Moose Lake died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, in her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born June 11, 1929, in Duluth to Carl and Hilda (Lycander) Borgen. Mary grew up in Mahtowa, where she attended school in her hometown through the elementary grades, having graduated from high school in Barnum in 1946. She attended Duluth State Teachers College for two years, obtaining a teaching certificate for elementary education. She taught school in the Duluth school system for the next two years and then went back to what is now the University of Minnesota Duluth to complete the work for her bachelor of science degree.

Mary married Duane C. Grace of Barnum on July 8, 1951, in Mahtowa. From this union, two children were born: Dean Charles in the naval hospital in Jacksonville, N.C., while Duane was serving in the USMC; and daughter Kathleen Elizabeth was born in Duluth, upon their return to Minnesota. They made their home in Barnum until 1959, when the family moved to St. Paul, where they resided until 1998, at which time they moved to the present home in Moose Lake. Mary taught school for more than 33 years, with countless young people receiving their first taste of formal education under her tutelage. She loved children and had three other children come to live under her roof and direction during one five year period.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Duane; a son, Dean Charles (Rennette) Grace; a daughter, Kathleen Elizabeth (Leon) Hedberg; her wonderful grandchildren with whom she was very pleased, Joshua, Caleb (Amanda) and Andrew Grace, and Issac and Rebekah Hedberg; and honorary granddaughters Heather and Heidi Blasjo, both of St. Paul.
MEMORIAL SERVICE:1:30 p.m. Saturday in Moose Lake Covenant Church. Memorials may be presented to Mahtowa Covenant Church, American Cancer Society or the charity of choice. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Minnesota, Duluth, (218) 624-5200.

AERIAL MARGARET BECKER
Aerial Margaret Becker, 87, of Buffalo Lake, Minn., passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, in Renville County Hospital, Olivia, Minn.
Aerial was born Aug. 8, 1914, in Grafton Township, Sibley County, Minn., the daughter of Fred P. and Emma (Mueller) Boehlke. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. Aerial grew up in Grafton Township on the family home place. She graduated with the Class of 1931 from Stewart High School and continued her education with Normal Teachers Training.

On Sept. 25, 1936, Aerial was united in marriage to Leroy "Roy" Becker in the Buffalo Lake Evangelical Church. After farming for 10 years, they moved to Buffalo Lake and had a cabinet shop for 10 years. The couple then moved to Duluth, where they made their home for 25 years before returning to Buffalo Lake. Aerial was the administrator of a health care boarding home. Leroy passed away Feb. 9, 1981. In 1983, Aerial was involved with organizing committee to establish the Renville County Hospice program, which was incorporated in 1985. She then became the program's first volunteer. Other than her involvement with the hospice program, Aerial enjoyed sewing and tailoring, needlework, cooking and baking, reading, crossword puzzles and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leroy; her sister, Dora Reep; and brothers-in-law Russell Reep and Pat Hendrickson.

Aerial is survived by her brothers, Rev. Ray Boehlke and his wife, Ruth of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Dr. Russell Boehlke and his wife, Donna of Fort Collins, Colo.; sisters Harriet Becker and her husband, Lowell of Buffalo Lake and Flora Hendrickson of Sartell, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

May the Lord bless her memory.

MARIE KALLA
Marie Kalla, 88, of Balkan, Minn., died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, in Heritage Manor Health Care Center, Chisholm.
She was born Feb. 3, 1913, in Waite Park, Minn., to Mathias J. and Catherine A. (Kinzer) Theisen. She was united in marriage on June 22, 1937, in Cold Spring, Minn., to Thomas A. Kalla. She had been a Balkan resident since 1948. Marie was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Chisholm. Marie was a devoted wife and mother.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas A., on Aug. 28, 2001; and a son, Gerald.

Survivors include her children, Frances (Richard) Seppala of Balkan, Thomas (Carolyn) of Broken Arrow, Okla., Robert (Sharon) of Chaska, Minn., and Mary (Fred) Fallen of Jefferson City, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers Marcellus (Frances) Theisen of Upsala, Minn., Elmer (Inez) Theisen of Naples, Fla., and Sylvester (Vera) Theisen of St. Joseph, Minn.; sisters Catherine Molitor, Elizabeth Kneip and Christine Birk, all of Cold Spring, Vitalia Brinkman of St. Joseph, Diane Theisen of St. Cloud, Minn., and Dolores (Ted) Schwegel of Cold Spring; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. today in Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Chisholm, with a parish prayer at 8 p.m. Visitation continues from 10:30 until the 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Wednesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Chisholm, Father Steve Daigle as celebrant. Interment in Chisholm cemetery.

EDWARD VAJDL
Edward Vajdl, 77, of Cloquet died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 6, 1923, in Mahnomen, Minn., to Louis and Bessie (Moravec) Vajdl. He was raised in the Mahnomen area and attended Mahnomen Public High School. Ed has been a Cloquet resident since 1960. He was a member and employed as head bartender for the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1274 of Cloquet. Ed was a World War II veteran and was awarded the Victory medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Battle Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star, two Overseas Service bars, and a Good Conduct medal. He was also a member of the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 of Cloquet and a former member of the Cloquet Eagles Aerie 1163.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Frank, John and Jerry; and an infant sister, Bessie.

He is survived by his sons, Robert (Mary) Vajdl of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Terry (Judy) Vajdl of Esko; daughters Sharon "Dolly" (Doug) Curtis of Cloquet and Susanne (LeRoy) Nelson of Duluth; a sister, Martha Williamson Ranger of Staples, Minn.; a special friend, Jean Magnuson of Proctor; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and all his special friends at the Moose Club.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Tuesday and service at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet. Interment services will follow in Pine River cemetery with full military honors presented by the Cloquet Honor Guard. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet.
