Evelyn M. Hansen DePierro
Evelyn M. Hansen DePierro, 85, of Grand Rapids died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, in Leisure Hills Health and Rehab, Grand Rapids.
Born Nov. 24, 1915, in Coleraine, she was the daughter of Matthais C. and Jenne (Solie) Hansen. She was a 1933 graduate of Greenway High School and attended Itasca Junior College and Minneapolis Business College. Evelyn was a legal secretary and had worked in law offices in Grand Rapids, St. Paul, and in Los Angeles for many years until her retirement in 1978. Following retirement, she returned to Minnesota.

Her parents, Matthais and Jennie Hansen; brothers Adolph, Eubert, Harold, and Donald Hansen and Alvin Solie; and sisters Lillian Drewes and Marion Kirlin preceded her in death.

Survivors include sisters-in-law, Gloria Hansen of Grand Rapids, Catherine Hansen of Coleraine and Agnes Solie of McIntosh, Minn.; and a special friend, Dorothy Rosen of Grand Rapids.
There will be no funeral services. Arrangements by Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine.

Willis "Bill" Conrad Lueck
Willis "Bill" Conrad Lueck, 81, of McGregor died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, in the Riverwood Health Care Center, Aitkin.
He was born Jan. 10, 1920, in Rabbit Lake Township, Crow Wing County to Fred H. and Rose (Schwab) Lueck. He attended Aitkin public schools. He was an Army veteran, having served in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters during World War II. On April 30, 1948, Bill married Vera Woodrow in Aitkin. Vera died March 23, 1993. Bill married Clarabelle (Rients) Steffen on Oct. 22, 1994, in Lakefield. He worked for 29 years with the former Pioneer and Continental Telephone Co.

Prior to his retirement, he farmed and drove a school bus and had spent his winters in Texas for the past 20 years. He was an original board member for the Villas in McGregor, on the board of directors for the East Lake Co-op, a co-leader for the Pine Haven 4-H, a member of Grange and the United Methodist Church in McGregor and a former member of the McGregor VFW.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera; sisters Ann Kellerman, Ida Peterson, Hazel Gruenhagen and Ruth Fenstermaker; a brother, Martin Lueck; and his parents.

Bill is survived by his wife Clarabelle; sons and daughters-in-law Bill Jr. (Peg) of Hutchinson and Bob (Roxanne) of Petoskey, Mich.; daughters and sons-in-law Vickie (Dennis) Berg of Carlton, Virgi (Bill) Thompson of Tulsa, Okla.; a foster son, Joel Johnson of Fargo, N.D.; stepdaughters Roxanne (John) Cline of Gainesville, Fla., Barbara (Steve) Klingberg of South St. Paul, Clarice (Ed) Ahner of Lake Elsiner, Calif.; stepsons Allen Steffen and Mark (Kay) Steffen, both of Lakefield; grandchildren Bill III, Angela and Charles Lueck, Kim (Don) Hall; Kate and Kristin Lueck, Michael, Amanda Raymond and Timothy Berg, Constance and Faith Thompson; step grandchildren Daniel (Stacy) Assved, Melissa and Krisa Klingberg, Mathew, Jared, Rebecca, Maria and Tricia Steffen; great- grandchildren Desiree and Donald Hall; brothers and sisters-in-law Connie (Joan) and Fritz (Louise), all of Aitkin; sisters Helen Winslow and Mildred Paulson, both of Aitkin.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday in United Methodist Church in McGregor and also from noon to the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Holy Family Catholic Church in McGregor. The Rev. Roy Vanderwerf will officiate. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Workman Township, Aitkin County. Arrangements by McGregor Funeral Home, McGregor.

Hilda A. Bleck
Hilda A. Bleck, 92, of Cloquet, formerly of Duluth, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, in Cloquet Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 11, 1909, in Danville Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, to John and Augusta (Kesting) Attenberger. She married Maynard Bleck Feb. 8, 1934, at Minnesota Lake. They farmed in Waldorf, Minn., for several years. Hilda was a homemaker and also helped Maynard run his residential construction business. They lived in Pine City and Cook before moving to Duluth in 1960. They moved to Saginaw in 1977 and returned to Duluth in 1983. She was a member of the congregation of Jehovah's Witness and West End Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Maynard, Oct. 26, 1997; brother, Richard Attenberger; a sister, Lida Gilster; and half-brothers, Oscar and Raymond Attenberger.

She is survived by daughters Smila (Clarence) Erickson of Cloquet and Betty (Dennis) Kolenda of Chetek, Wis.; a sister, Mabel (George) Fischer of Mapleton, Minn.; grandchildren Becky (Jay) Tremblay, Michael (Linda Bammert) Erickson, Mark (Lisa) Erickson, Vernon (fiance Jennifer Shenett) Erickson, Craig (Michelle) Kolenda, and Shandra Kolenda; great-grandchildren Angie (John) Irvine and Melissa Tremblay, Nathan, Corey and Matthew Erickson, and KellyJo, Matthew and Hanna Kolenda; and several nephews.
A memorial talk will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Kingdom Hall, 4602 Arrowhead Road. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Elizabeth "Betty" Sabin
Elizabeth "Betty" Sabin, 77, of Hibbing died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, in the University Medical Center-Mesabi, Hibbing.
She was born on Nov. 9, 1923, in Gary, Ind., to Andrew and Barbara Soroka. She graduated with honors from Lew Wallace High School in 1941 in Gary. She was a social worker for St. Louis County for 21 years, retiring Aug. 1, 1982. She then helped operate several businesses with her family. She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, was an avid bowler and enjoyed camping, fishing and bingo.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, John B. Sabin of Hibbing; sons John (Sandy) Sabin of Chisholm and George (Cindy) Sabin of Side Lake; a brother, Marty Soroka of Gary; a sister, Mary (Dominic) Fenoglio of Chesterton, Ind.; grandchildren Jerry Robert Sabin of Hibbing, Katrina Marie Sabin of Hibbing, Angela Ann Malone of Grand Forks, N.D., and Kristie Jo Sabin of Hibbing; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing, with parish wake prayers at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial 11:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Leo's Catholic Church, Hibbing, the Rev. Peter Muhich as celebrant. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing. Pallbearers will be: Richard Kilen, David Guye, Mike Anderson, Andy Selvo, Richard Sabin Jr. and Tom Howell.

Ervan D. Brim
Ervan D. Brim, 76, of Winter Haven, Fla., died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001.
Survivors include sons Dan (Karen) of Keewatin, Tom and Timothy (Lynn); three brothers; a stepbrother; two sisters; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives, including some on the Iron Range and in Wisconsin.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to noon Thursday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing. Interment in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing.

Darrin Stevens
Darrin Stevens, 21, of Solon Springs died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, as the result of an automobile accident.
Survivors include his father, John (Kim) Stevens; mother, Bonnie (Dan Gordon) Garvey; special friend, Kari Lucas; a brother, Tyler Garvey; sisters Shannon (Joe) Bane, Carrie (Jeff) Lipp, Amber Coughlin, Courtney Garvey and Nikole Stevens; "gramma and grampa" Bev and Jim Jamison.
Visitation: 9 a.m. Wednesday in Brown Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Pius Catholic Church, Solon Springs. Interment in Evergreen cemetery, Solon Springs.

Eugene P. Insley
Eugene P. Insley, 75, of Aitkin died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, in the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center, Crosby.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7 p.m. in Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin. Service 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. James Catholic Church, Aitkin, Father Patrick Coyle officiating. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Aitkin.

Beaulah Sarff
Beaulah Sarff, 82, of Blaine, Minn., formerly of Scanlon died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, in Birchwood Health Care Center in Forest Lake, Minn.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet. Interment in Oneota cemetery, Duluth. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet.

Margaret J. Williams-Lamb
Margaret J. Williams-Lamb, 77, of Culver passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, after a brief illness.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in Wefelmeyer-Handevidt Funeral Home, 1506 Washington Ave., Cloquet. Visitation continues from 9 until the 10 a.m. service Thursday in Faith Lutheran Church, Culver.

Ruby V. Bystrom
Ruby V. Bystrom, 91, of Grand Marais and formerly of Tofte died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, in North Shore Care Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray; an infant son, Donald; daughter-in-law, Linda; two sisters; and a brother.

She is survived by a son and daughters, Richard, Nancy (Robert) Brazell, Darlene (Mike) Quaife, all of Grand Marais, Marilyn (Lloyd) Berglund of Stillwater, Minn., and Ruth Ann (Bill) Spinner of Boyne City, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Grand Marais, and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Grand Marais. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery.

Hazel A. Maki
Hazel A. Maki, 89, of Moose Lake died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, in Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake.
She was born July 22, 1912, in Kettle River to Charles and Emma (Risto) Nikkila. Hazel grew up and attended school in Kettle River. On Dec. 26, 1934, Hazel married Russell B. Maki Sr. in Thomson, Minn. Hazel and Russell dairy farmed for several years in Kettle River. Hazel was also a homemaker through the years. In 1992, she moved to Hillside Manor West in Moose Lake.

She was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Kettle River. Hazel also enjoyed gardening, fishing and knitting. Hazel's family loved the cinnamon rolls that she made.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Russell B. Maki Sr., in 1992; five sisters; and three brothers.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Karen Koivisto of Arden Hills; a son, Russell Jr. (Donna) of Oakdale; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Monday in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake, and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Kettle River. Burial in Holy Trinity Lutheran cemetery, Kettle River. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

Richard "Apollo Dick" Nikula
Richard "Apollo Dick" Nikula, 65, of Finland died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
Visitation: 4-6 p.m. today and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday, all in Sychar Lutheran Church, Silver Bay. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home. Memorials preferred to Finland First Responders.

Jay Hurd
Jay Hurd, 79, of Bemidji died on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at his residence.
He is survived by his sons, Rodney (Chris) of Mountain Iron, Paul (Patsy) of Bemidji, and Robert (Robyn) of Lillian, Texas; daughters Kathy (JC) Canada of Rendon, Texas, and Jae Dee (Victor) Spadaro of Clinton, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: one hour prior to the 2 p.m. service in Calvary Evangelical Free church in Bagley, Minn. Arrangements by Cease Family Funeral Home in Bagley.
