Myrtle A. Merfeld, 86, of Cloquet passed away Saturday, July 21, 2001, in the Cloquet Nursing Home.
Arrangements are being handled by Wefelmeyer-Handevidt Funeral and Cremation Service, 1506 Washington Ave., Cloquet, (218) 879-6741.

Glenn J. Bystrom
Glenn J. Bystrom, 88, of Tower died Sunday, July 22, 2001, in Arrowhead Senior Living Community, Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve, in 1995.

Survivors include daughters Joan Laugen and Carol (James) Chiabotti, both of Virginia, and Sarah (Skip) Hendrickson of Duluth.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. memorial service Thursday in St. James Presbyterian Church, Tower. Inurnment in Lakeview cemetery, Tower. Arrangements by the Landmark Funeral Home, Virginia.

Charles LeRoy Gault
Charles LeRoy Gault, 88, of Carlton, formerly of Wrenshall, died Friday, January 12, 2001, in Carlton Nursing Home.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva; a sister, Helen; and parents Charles and Anna Gault.

Charles is survived by a stepson, Edward (Barbara) Stahlbusch of Barnum; a stepdaughter, Leann (Kenneth) Newman of Minneapolis; sisters Anna Olson of Cloquet, Joyce (Donald) Anderson of Kettle River and Rae (Kenneth) Meier of Lake Charles, La.; brothers August (Dorothy) Gault of Wrenshall, Otto (Myrtle) Gault of Duluth and Walter (Norma) Gault of Wrenshall; several step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Service: 1 p.m. Saturday in St. John's Lutheran Church, Wrenshall, the Rev. Kevin Tiaden officiating. Inurnment in Hillside cemetery, Carlton. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

Esther Elnor Bennett
Esther Elnor Bennett, 75, of Brainerd, formerly of Eveleth, died Saturday, July 21, 2001.
She is survived by her husband, Clair; a son, Donald Miles; stepsons Robert and Ronald Bennett; a daughter, Anita Pearson; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Assembly of God Church, Pillager. Burial in Lakewood cemetery, Crosby. Arrangements by Koop Funeral Home, Crosby.

JAMES "JIM" BECK
James "Jim" Beck, 80, of Cloquet, formerly of Palisade, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice.
He fought a brave battle against his lengthy illness. He was born May 21, 1921, to Ernest and Elna (Salmela) Beck. He enlisted in the Army in 1939 and was awarded five bronze battle stars in the 3rd Division European Theater. He returned from Angio Beach Head and trained combat-ready infantrymen at Camp Wheeler, Georgia. Jim was united in marriage to Velda VerDugt on July 2, 1944, in Macon, Ga. He graduated from Dunwoody Institute in 1947, and became an A Journeyman working as a construction electrician until his retirement in 1983.

Jim was an avid sports fan of the Vikings and Twins. He loved to fish, hunt and develop the family Mississippi tree farm. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet, a life member of Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979, Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262, NRA, Senior and Classic Bowling Leagues, Electrical Workers Retirees and Society of 3rd Division. He served in many capacities for the VFW Post 3979 and 18 years as 8th District senior activities chairman. He served on the Cloquet Riverfront Planning Board and helped develop Veterans Memorial Park.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John; two sisters in infancy; and a brother, Stanley.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Velda; a son, Paul (Susan) Beck of San Clemente, Calif.; a grandson, Bradley of Superior; a brother, Robert of Murphysboro, Ill.; a sister, Violet Satterwhite of Tacoma, Wash.; an uncle, Victor Salmela of Boyton Beach, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Misty.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet. Visitation continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Zion Lutheran Church, 1000 Washington Ave., Cloquet. Interment services in Maple Grove cemetery, Cloquet with full military honors presented by the Cloquet Honor Guard. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet.

GRAYDEN KLEINSCHMIDT
Grayden Kleinschmidt, 79, of Grand Rapids died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Morgan, Minn. He moved to Grand Rapids in 1944, where he was employed at Blandin Paper Co. for 45 years.

Grayden is survived by his wife, Louise; sons Gary and Dale (Pam), both of Duluth, and Kurt of Cottonwood, Ariz.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his brothers and sisters, Clinton (Joyce), Curtis, and Alice (Charles) Bryant of Washington, and Garnett (Eddie) Benedetti of California.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Harries Town Hall. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, (218) 326-4000.

MILDRED SCHUCHARD
Mildred Schuchard, 92, of Beaver Bay died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospice.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 3 p.m. Thursday in Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel, 4100 W. Grand Ave., Duluth. Inurnment in Lake George cemetery, Lake George, Minn.

DIANNE LOUISE IMBERTSON
Dianne L. Imbertson, 55, of Hibbing died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, in her home.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin; stepdaughters Kristine (Scott) Gum, Karen (Brian) Raming, Beth Ann (Michael) Buchsbaum and Susan Imbertson; and two step grandchildren.
Visitation: 10:30 until the 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Tuesday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment at a later date in Maple Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

ROXANNE STEPAN LOWE
Roxanne Stepan Lowe, 50, of Thorton Colo., died unexpectedly in her home, Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at the young age of 50.
She was born June 20, 1951, in Cloquet. Roxie was a good midwestern Minnesota girl with a gift of gab. She relocated to Colorado in 1981 where she worked for the past 12 years for the Denver International Airport as a security guard, starting at the time ground was broken for its construction. She was a very strong and independent spirit who was always there for everybody. She was extremely generous and would have given the shirt off her back even if it were her last one. We regret we did not get more time to love her.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mike and Josephine DeGrace, and Joseph and Mary Stepan; aunts Mary McCallum, Lorrayne Calfee; and uncles Pat DeGrace and Stanley Stepan.

She is survived by her husband, Ken Lowe; her parents, Joe and Dolly Stepan of Nashwauk; her faithful schnauzers, Bridget and Barney; sisters Candi (Don) Bogdanovich of Pengilly, Leigh Stepan of Plymouth, Minn., and Jode (Barry) Boldt of St. Cloud; nieces Renae (Shawn) Schultz of Nashwauk and Heather Boldt; nephew Gregg Boldt; grandnephew Joseph Schultz; grandniece Mikayla Schultz; sisters-in-law Carolyn Dudley, Alpha Mills and Lucretia Hayden; brother-in-law Earl Lowe; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Sunday with parish wake prayers at 7 p.m. and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday, all in St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Nashwauk, the Rev. Ron Gagne as celebrant. Burial in Maple Hill cemetery, Hibbing. Pallbearers are: Bob Lawson, Don Bogdanovich, Shawn Schultz, Pat DeGrace, Kevin Johnson and Ray Jensen. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

CALVIN B. BERG
Calvin B. Berg, 63, of Littlefork died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, in International Falls.
Survivors include sons Kevin and Shane Berg; daughters Melanie Montgomery and Chris-Ann Berg; a brother, Marlow; and sisters Sandy Peasha, and Christine and Margo Hell.
Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. service Monday in St. Columban's Catholic Church, Littlefork. Burial in Oakley cemetery, Littlefork. Arrangements by Green-Larsen Mortuary.

CYNTHIA (WAHL) ANDERSON
Cynthia (Wahl) Anderson, 76, of Grand Rapids passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in her home.
She was born Aug. 26, 1925, in Minneapolis, and grew up and attended school in Duluth. She graduated from Central High School in 1943. She received her degree in public health nursing from the University of Minnesota. In 1950, Cynthia Wahl was united in marriage to Lawrence M. Anderson and in 1988, the couple moved to Grand Rapids. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, and was a volunteer with St. Luke's Home Care.

Cynthia was preceded in death by her parents, Edward F. and Olive (Swanson) Anderson.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; daughters Sherry Anderson of Minneapolis, and Holly Bergen, Lynn (Don) Jones and Wendy Anderson, all of Duluth; sons Steven (Sharon) Anderson of Chandler, Ariz., Scott (Patty) Anderson of Grand Rapids and Mark (Erica) Anderson of Iowa City, Iowa; a sister, Joan (Robert) Swanson of Duluth; and 10 grandchildren.
PRIVATE SERVICES have been held. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

OLIVE S. "LIV" OLIVER
Olive S. "Liv" Oliver, 96, of Ranier died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001.
She is survived by a son, Alvin "Bob" Oliver; daughters Olga Dahlen and Hildur Chapman; a grandson, Jared "Jay" Hokenson; and a brother, Bjarne Espeland.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today in Green-Larsen Mortuary, Inc., International Falls. Service at 3 p.m. Saturday in Zion Lutheran Church, International Falls. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Green-Larsen Mortuary Inc. of International Falls.

GEORGE L. PURDON
George L. Purdon, 92, formerly of Foxboro died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, in Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior.
Surviving are a stepson, Richard Landsverk; a nephew, Duane (Ann) Purdon; and a niece, Iris Edwards.
GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 11 a.m. today at Summit cemetery, Lee Downey officiating. Downs Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
