Myrtle B. Dokken, 90
Died: Friday, October 15, 2004, in Eventide Lutheran Home.
Myrtle B. Dokken, 90, of Moorhead, died Friday October 15, 2004, surrounded by her loving family and the caring staff of Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN.

Myrtle was born to John and Olga (Wasfaret) Hanson on March 3, 1914 near Ulen, MN. Myrtle married Melvin Restad in November of 1935, and they made their home in the Twin Valley-Ada area. They had two children, Donna and Roger, and moved to Moorhead, Minnesota in 1953. In 1963, Myrtle married Allyn Dokken and continued living in Moorhead. Myrtle was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church Women Organization. Most of Myrtle's working years were spent being a cook at restaurants like Mattson's Truck Stop and Herbst Cafe. After retiring, Myrtle became involved as a Senior Companion with Lutheran Social Services, being honored for her long-standing service.

Myrtle has been widely known for her excellent cooking and baking abilities and was known by many as one of the best cooks around. Myrtle loved playing cards and bingo, cooking meals for her family, singing songs, visiting with friends, dancing with her walker, talking Norwegian and driving her most prized possession, her car "Betsy." Myrtle was a very hard working, determined women, fiercely independent and very loyal to her family and friends. Myrtle treasured her family, demonstrated unconditional love, and gave new meaning to the titles of Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother. Although our loss seems insurmountable, we have great pride in knowing that the legacy of this gracious, magnificent women will live on in all those lucky enough to have been a part of her life and share in her love.

Myrtle is survived by her daughter, Donna (Larry) Graffis, Moorhead, MN; one sister, Hazel Slininger, Moorhead, MN; two grandchildren, Pam (Marvin) Priem and Angie Duggan; and 5 great-grandchildren, Zachary Duggan, Mitchell Miller, Jessica Duggan, Logan Duggan, and Taylor Priem.

Mytrle is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Melvin Restad, her second husband, Allyn Dokken, one son, Roger Restad, three brothers, Gordon, Ordel, and Virgil Nelson, and one sister, Olive Hanson.

Winnifred E. "Winnie" Rupert, 88
Died: Sunday, November 14, 2004, in the Presbyterian Home, Arden Hills, MN.
Winnifred E. (Winnie) Rupert, nee Edlund, age 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 14, 2004 at Presbyterian Homes in Arden Hills, MN. preceded in death by her husband, William P. (Willie) Rupert, she is survived by sisters Catherine Fossay and Marguerite Liechty and her husband Ezra; sons Curt and his wife Judy E. and Paul and his wife Judy K; grandchildren Mike, Mark, Anne, Jason; and great grandchildren Ryan, Jake, James and Catherine (Kate).

Winnie was an active member of First Congregational Church of Moorhead for many years. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers, and should be given to the church.

A memorial service will also be held at Presbyterian Homes of Arden Hills.

Luis M. Valadez, 49

Luis M. Valadez, 49, of Moorhead, died Friday, April 8, 2005 in his home.

Luis was born on January 24, 1956 in Eagle Pass, TX to Luis and Petra Valadez. He grew up and attended school in Eagle Pass. Luis was a police officer in Texas.

Luis is survived by his wife Maria Valadez, Moorhead, MN; one step son, Juan Antonio Lopez, Mexico; three step daughters, Patricia Yesenia Lopez, Mexico, Paola Jeanette Flores, Moorhead, MN, and Mayra Alejandra Lopez, Mexico.

Margaret V. Mischke, 80
Died: Friday, October 22, 2004, in Innovis Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Margaret Mischke was born September 20, 1924 near Hawley, MN to Alfred O. and Selma Anderson. She attended rural schools then Hitterdal High School. Margaret was married to Duane Mischke on July 28, 1962 at Highland Grove Lutheran Church near Hitterdal, MN. Following their marriage they lived in Hitterdal where they owned and operated Mischke Hardware from 1971 to 1991. Margaret was the organist at Highland Grove Lutheran Church for over 30 years. She also give piano lessons at her home in Hitterdal. Duane and Margaret moved into the Viking Manor Nursing Home at Ulen in 1996. Duane died on January 13, 1997. Margaret died Friday at Innovas Hospital in Fargo, ND at the age of 80.

She is survived by one daughter, Lois (Wayne) Opsahl, Big Lake, MN: one brother, Aldwin (Ellen) Anderson, Hitterdal, MN: one sister, Esther (Edward) Luthi, Hawley, MN: two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Walter Holler, 92
Died: Wednesday, November 24, 2004, in Sunnyside Nursing Home, Lake Park, MN.
Walter Holler, 92 of Hawley, MN died Wednesday, November 24, 2004 in Sunnyside Nursing Home, Lake Park, MN.

Walter was born to Peter and Amelia (Rhinehardt) Holler on November 5, 1912 in Erie, ND. He grew up and attended school in Erie, ND. On January 4, 1938 he married Velva Leach. Walter worked at Thysell Brothers as a mechanic and farmed in Spring Prairie Township much of his life.

He is survived by one sister, Mary Leach (Holler), Glyndon, MN; five nephews, Gary Leach Glyndon, MN, Virgil (Debra) Leach, Glyndon, MN, Charles (Rita) Leach, Glyndon, MN, Henry (Darlene) Sandal, Glyndon, MN, Richard (Laverne) Holler, Ward, AK; five nieces, Delores (Roy) Jorgenson, Hawley, MN, Shirley (Wesley) Berg, Abercrombie, ND, Mary (Jack) Herbstritt, Lake Havasu City, AZ, Gloria Holler, Stanton, CA, and Esther (Richard) Heidmann, New Hope, MN.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velva Holler (Leach); five brothers, John, George, Elmer, Dennis and Robert Holler; and three sisters, Lucille Sandal, Emma Leu, and Tillie Higgins.

Marilyn K. Torkelson, 59
Died: Wednesday, August 11, 2004, in Moorhead Health Care Center.
Marilyn K. Torkelson, 59, of Hawley, Minnesota, died, Wednesday, August 11, 2004, at the Moorhead Health Care Center in Moorhead, Minnesota.

Marilyn K. Lokken was born November 16, 1944 in Fargo, North Dakota to Emil and Inez (Dahl) Lokken. She grew up in Fargo and graduated from Central High School. Marilyn was married to Howard Torkelson on May 25, 1963 in Fargo. Following their marriage they lived in Fargo, and then later moved to Hawley, Minnesota.

She was employed at Dakota Hospital in Fargo for twenty-five years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

She is survived by her husband, Howard Torkelson, Hawley, MN; four sons, James Torkelson, Fargo, ND, Chad Torkelson, Hawley, MN, Todd Torkelson, Hawley, MN, and Dan Torkelson, Ulen, MN; one daughter, Shelly (Kevin) McCartney, Kennedale, TX; one grandchild, Allyson McCartney.

Shaaron D. Tommerdahl, 64
Died: Saturday, July 24, 2004, in her home under the care of Hospice.
Shaaron Dee Tommerdahl, age 64, of Felton, MN died Saturday, July 24, 2004 peacefully surrounded by her family at her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Shaaron was born April 15, 1940 in Brookings, SD, the daughter of Elmer and Delia (Rentschler) Johnson. She attended country school in Volga, SD and highschool in Brookings, SD. After graduating in 1958, Shaaron worked for the Brookings and Sioux Falls, SD telephone companies. After moving to Fargo, ND, Shaaron worked at Wimmers Jewelry. On November 14, 1964, Shaaron married Wescott Tommerdahl and was a devoted farmer's wife and mother. After raising her family, she worked a number of years at Metropolitan Federal Bank in Fargo, ND.

Shaaron was especially loving and nurturing, she enjoyed baking and cooking, and loved nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren.

Shaaron is survived by her husband Wescott Tommerdahl, Felton, MN; one son, Scott Tommerdahl, Dilworth, MN; two daughters: Denise (Kent) Fuchs, Felton, MN; Lisa (Nick) Skalicky, Fargo, ND; five beloved grandchildren: Tailin Shirley Tommerdahl, Kaitlyn Shaaron Skalicky, Autumn Tommerdahl Fuchs, Jory Dennis Fuchs and Emily Joe Skalicky; special friend Patricia Wangler, Bismarck, ND; nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

She was proceeded in death by her parents and brother Darwyn "Jim" Johnson (Alice Bach-Johnson, Holeman, WI).

Ronald Opatril, 60
Died: April 05, 2004, in Rosewood on Broadway.
Ronald Opatril was born February 5, 1944 at Barnesville, Minnesota to Rudy and Marie (Kluck) Opatril. He grew up north of Hawley and graduated from Hawley High School in 1962. He was baptized and confirmed at the Hawley Parsonage. He worked for Haugen Masonry and Fairmont Creamery, then moved to Colorado for a few years, returning to Hawley in 1971. He was employed by Opatril Concrete. In 1998 Ronald moved to Sunnyside Nursing Home in Lake Park, Minnesota, and for the past year has been a resident of Rosewood On Broadway in Fargo, North Dakota.

Ronald died Monday, April 5, 2004, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, at Rosewood On Broadway, at the age of 60.

He is survived by his mother, Marie Opatril, Hawley, MN; one son, Jeffrey Opatril, Denver, CO; one daughter, Stephanie (Russell) Ray, Atlanta, GA; four brothers, Merlyn Opatril, Glyndon, MN, Duane Opatril, Hawley, MN, Richard (Paulette) Opatril, Hitterdal, MN, and Milton (Sandra) Opatril, Dilworth, MN; one sister, Judy (Keith) Gregerson, Fargo, ND; two granddaughters, Crystal & Keisha Hueton.

Gordon F. Johnson, 94
Died: Wednesday, March 16, 2005, in Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine, MN.
Gordon F. Johnson, age 94, died quietly, in his chair, with his daughter present, on March 16, 2005 at Pioneer Care Center in Erskine, MN.

Gordon was born on January 6, 1911 to Fred and Margaret Johnson in Bertha, MN. He grew up in the rural Felton-Averill area.

During the depression years he worked in the CC camp in Northern MN where he met and married Grace Hill in 1936. They made their home near Effie, MN. They had one child, Beverly, in 1938. Gordon and Beverly moved to Glyndon in 1940. Gordon answered the call to duty in 1942 serving in the US Army as a Medic in the Pacific. He was severely wounded near the end of the war. Following the war Gordon returned to Glyndon where he served as Glyndon's sheriff. Later he built Gordy's Garage and had a well drilling business.

In 1969 Gordon married Florence Mielke. Gordon and Florence enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling. Florence died in 1998 after a prolonged illness. Gordon lived with his daughter, Beverly, and son in law, Paul, for 5 years. He continued to enjoy fishing and going to Arizona during the winter months. In June 2003 Gordon and his dog, Tuffy, moved to the Pioneer Care Center in Erskine, MN, where he enjoyed many friendships.

Gordon is survived by his daughter Beverly (Paul) Finstad; two grandchildren, Mark (Kathy) Finstad and Jane Finstad; four great grandchildren, Christopher and Sarah Finstad and Mary and Jessica Tufton.
