Wearne F. “Red” Clayton

Red, a man of many “dreams” who was personable, grateful, a dedicated Catholic and a fun-loving father, grandfather and brother. He was a proud veteran of World War II and a very devoted Green Bay Packers fan. He was a salesman for Sexton Foods, and owned Red’s Korner Pizza in Anoka. Golf and horses were some of his passions. Red owned and raced a horse called “Sample, Sample” around the Midwest. He enjoyed horses so much that he worked 15 years at Canterbury Park Race Track. Red also worked part-time at Northstar Auto Auction. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing, gourmet cooking and gardening, with a specialty of roses and apple trees. He was a man who was proud of his Irish heritage and gave his wife credit every day for guidance. He was a member of the American Legion, Greenhaven Men’s Golf Club, and St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Anoka.

Wearne “Red,” 88, of Prior Lake and formerly of Anoka, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving daughters and granddaughters on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009 at the Jones-Harrison Residence in Minneapolis. He was born Aug. 31, 1921 in Mineral Point, Wis., the son of Milo and Claretta (Collins) Clayton. He was united in marriage to Verlene McCormick on May 5, 1951 in Reedsburg, Wis.

Red is loved and will be forever missed by children, Michael (Sandy) Clayton of Sarasota, Fla., Patrick (Evy Johnson) Clayton of Mound, Mary Beth (Paul) Onkka of Prior Lake and Cindy Decker of Anchorage, Alaska; grandchildren, Will, Blake, Kelsey Onkka; Kyle, Tyler, Casey Clayton, Christopher Kosedner and Emily Rose Decker; sister, Betty Horn of Tonawanda, N.Y.; loving friend and companion for 20 years, Margaret Schnell.

Red is preceded in death by loving wife of 31 years, Verlene; parents; sister, Patricia (Clayton) Truchon.

Visitation was Tuesday, Dec. 15, at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, Prior Lake, from 5-8 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at church.

Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. at the Church of St. Michael, Prior Lake. The Rev. Tom Sieg officiated. Interment at Fort Snelling National cemetery in Minneapolis. Pallbearers were Paul, Will and Blake Onkka, Christopher Kosednar and Casey Clayton.

Memorials are preferred and will be distributed in Red’s memory by the family.

Arrangements made by Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, Prior Lake Chapel. .

Cindy Mark

Cindy Mark, 61, of Cedar Lake Township, died from complications of pancreatic cancer Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009 at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina.

Cindy was born Jan. 5, 1948 in Baltimore, Md. She married Stephen Mark in 1984 in Delaware. After their daughter Kaite was born, they moved to Minnesota.

Cindy was a Ph.D. student at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. She was an adjunct professor of Feminist Studies at Rasmussen College and a professor of Feminist Studies and Philosophy at the Minnesota Women’s Correctional Facility-Shakopee through Augsburg College. Cindy earned her Master’s of Science degree in Women’s Studies at Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2007.

Cindy was a loving and devoted mother, and an extremely passionate activist, feminist and advocate for women and girls. She was an active member and speaker for the Minnesota Valley National Organization for Women. A highly creative artist, Cindy was well known for her one-of-a-kind Grandmere Sage© figures. She was also the past president of the Prior Lake Arts Society.

Cindy neither welcomed nor battled cancer; rather, she moved through this challenge with dignity and grace. She was tenaciously dedicated to living her life to the fullest.

Cindy is survived by her husband, Stephen; daughter, Kaite; sister, Sandy Bowles; niece, Jennifer Moran.

Memorials should be directed to the Minnesota Valley chapter of the National Organization for Women.

Celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Edward E. Schmidt

Edward “Bud” Schmidt, 92, longtime resident of Waseca, Minn., died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 at St. Gertrude’s Health Center in Shakopee.

Bud had resided at McKenna Crossing in Prior Lake and St. Gertrude’s for the last several years, but in his heart Waseca remained the heart and soul of his existence.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Dec. 19, at 1:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca with the Rev. Martin Schaefer the celebrant. Interment will be in the Calvary cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at McRaith Funeral Home in Waseca. There will be no reviewal at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to either the Sacred Heart Education Endowment Fund or the Waseca Area Foundation Endowment Fund.

Bud was born Sept. 16, 1917 to Edward and Bridget Agnes (Reibold) Schmidt in St. Mary Township, Waseca County, Minn. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1937. Bud was engaged in the trucking business from 1937 forward, having operated Bud Schmidt Trucking Company for the next 45 years until retiring in January of 1982. Bud was united in marriage to Lorraine L. Hoechst at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waseca on Nov. 4, 1942. He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. After retiring in 1982, Bud built his retirement home immediately east of Waseca and very much enjoyed gardening and taking care of his home and yard, particularly when he could ride his John Deere lawn mower.

Bud is survived by his wife, Lorraine, and their three children and their families, Mary Jean (Dale) Oliver of Lake City, Robert E. (Mary Lou Kinkade) Schmidt of Waseca, Maureen A. (Larry) Schulte of Prior Lake, Paul (Staci) Oliver, Andrew (Tracy) Oliver, Brandyn Oliver, Jesse Oliver, Tori Oliver, Alex Oliver, and Cade Oliver, all of Lake City, Jim (Jennifer) Kinkade, Trystin Kinkade of Waseca; and brother, Harold “Hon” (Audrey) Schmidt of Waseca. Bud was preceded in death by parents; brother, Thomas Percy Schmidt; two grandchildren, Thomas Schmidt in 1976 and Daniel E. Schmidt in 1982.

Edward Thomas Bartyzal

Edward "Punky" Bartyzal, 72, of Corpus Christi, TX and formerly of New Prague, died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at his home in Corpus Christi.

Arrangements are pending.

Juergen H. Roesken

Juergen Roesken, 58, of Appleton, WI, passed away at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Among others, he is survived by brother, Rudy Roesken of Prior Lake.

Funeral services for Juergen will be held Monday, March 15, 2010 at 4 p.m. at Appleton Alliance Church, 2693 W. Grand Chute Blvd., with the Rev. Brian Dainsberg officiating. Friends may visit the family at church Monday from 2-4 pm. Military honors will follow the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established.

Eugene “Gene” O’ Keefe

Gene was a kind, curious and dignified husband, father and grandfather who had a gentle soul and a quiet and dry Irish wit.

He was the owner/operator of O’Keefe Cleaners and Laundry in Shakopee for years. Gene also worked for almost 30 years at Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Administration. He enjoyed golfing and reading, with a special interest in presidential and political history. Gene was an avid sports fan of the Minnesota professional teams. He served in the United States Navy and was one of the original members of the Prior Lake V.F.W. He was also a member of the Shakopee Lions Club. His biggest passion in life was his family.

Gene, 84, of Prior Lake, entered God’s arms peacefully March 6, 2010 at his home. Born June 9, 1925 in Prior Lake, he was the son of James and Katherine (Suel) O’Keefe. He was united in marriage to Mary Alice Von Bank on April 19, 1949 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jordan.

He is loved and will be missed by his wife of 60 years, Alice; children, Patrick (Cheryl) O’Keefe of Prior Lake, Mary Jeanne (Tim) Riffe of Shakopee, Colleen O’Keefe (Russ Schaffenberg) of Bloomington; grandchildren, Ryan O’Keefe, Adam Riffe, Ellie Riffe and Jen (Sean) Anderson; great-grandchildren, Margo and Mia Anderson; other relatives and friends.

preceded in death by son, James Patrick O’Keefe; parents; siblings, Margaret Schaefer, Francis “Bud” O’Keefe, Howard O’Keefe, Dick O’Keefe and Kathleen Stemmer.

Visitation was Tuesday, March 9 from 4-8 p.m. at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, Prior Lake, and also one hour prior to the Mass at church.

Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, March 10 at 11 a.m. at the Church of St. Michael, Prior Lake. Pallbearers were Greg O’Keefe, Jeff O’Keefe, Dan O’Keefe, Mike Stemmer, Rick Hennes, Jim O'Keefe and Kevin Von Bank. Interment will be at St. Michael’s Catholic cemetery.

Arrangements made by Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, Prior Lake Chapel.

Donald Aho

Donald Aho, 93, of Prior Lake, formerly of Bismarck, ND, passed away Aug. 1, 2010 at McKenna Crossings Assisted Living.

Donald was born Dec. 13, 1916 in Brimson, MN. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and worked for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture for 35 years.

Donald was preceded in death by his son, Richard. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 69 years, Myrtle; daughters, Sharon (Wayne) Anderson of Rockville, MD; Gayle (Steve) Potas of Prior Lake; Vicki Werve of Greenbank, WA, Marti (Loren) Fazio of Yosemite, CA; grandchildren, Kristin (Ted), Scott, Angela, Stephanie (Andy), Damon; great-grandchildren, Sydney, Samantha, Ana, Drew, and Isabella.

A celebration of Donald's life is planned for Oct. 2, 2010.

Ross M. Franzen

Ross M. Franzen, 67, of Prior Lake, was born Jan. 8, 1943 to Harold G. and Gudrun S. Franzen of South Minneapolis. God peacefully took Ross’s entrepreneurial spirit for his last venture on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010.

Ross was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Susan Franzen of Arizona. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carol; their two wonderful daughters and sons-in-law, Kristen and Jeff Johnson of Northfield and Shelley and Mike Bartizal of Farmington; brother, Jack of Arizona; sister, Gail (Don) Kleven of Bloomington. Ross also leaves behind five grandchildren, Ashleigh Handorff, Ben, Nick and Molly Johnson, and Rylee Bartizal; nieces, Lynn Thompson and Liv McKnight; nephews, Scott Franzen, John Franzen and Kit Cummins.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Ave. S., Edina (952-924-4100). In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Special Olympics.

Karen Lenor Fristed

Karen Fristed, born July 13, 1954 in Minot, ND, was the daughter of Mearl and Clytia (Hamilton) Allshouse. Karen and Don Fristed exchanged wedding vows Oct. 1, 1983 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Prior Lake. She worked in the administrative offices at Burnsville School District for 33 years. Karen was an avid reader and enjoyed watching birds and traveling.

Karen was 56 years young when she passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2010 at her home in Savage.

She is loved and will be deeply missed by husband, Don; mother, Clytia Allshouse of Arizona; siblings, Jim (Diane) Allshouse of Minneapolis, Herb (Carolyn) Allshouse of Stillwater, Jodi (Mike) Reimel of Nevada, Robert Faue of Rogers, Willie (Sandy) Allshouse of Coon Rapids; many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Karen was preceded in death by her father, Mearl Allshouse; nephews, Aaron and John Allshouse.

Visitation was Monday, Aug. 30, from 4-7 p.m. at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Homes, Prior Lake, and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Celebration of Life Service was Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Prior Lake. The Rev. John P. Vaughn officiated.

Annelda J. Hammers

Annelda “Nellie” Hammers, 89, of Shakopee, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010 at the Minnesota Masonic Home, surrounded by her family.

Visitation is Monday, Jan. 3, from 3-7 p.m. at the McNearney Funeral Home, Shakopee, and at the church one hour prior to the Mass.

Mass of Christian Burial is Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary of the Purification Catholic Church, Marystown.
