Lawrence “Larry” E. Burlison Jr., 76

Lawrence “Larry” E. Burlison Jr., 76, of Breckenridge, Minn., died suddenly Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Rapid City, S.D.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m.on Thursday, April 23 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Breckenridge, Minn., with Fr. Kenneth Popp officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22 at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge. Visitation is also one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home. Interment will be at Calvary cemetery, Fairmount, N.D.

Pallbearers will be Tim Kurtz, Lee Poppe, Curtis Mosher, Monty Krause, Elijah Kurtz, Ted Luick, Bruce Krause, David Rosenkranz.

Lawrence was born in his grandmother’s house in White Rock, S.D. on March 1, 1933 to Lawrence and Mary (Sauter) Burlison and soon after returned to his parent’s farm near Fairmount, N.D. The family lived at several locations in the Fairmount area. He attended school there and then spent two years at a country school near Tyler, N.D. before returning to Fairmount School. After his father became ill, he farmed the home farm.

On September 8, 1954, Larry was united in marriage to Myrna Kurtz at Fairmount and lived at the home farm. Larry worked summers doing road construction in addition to farming.

In 1964, they moved to Breckenridge and worked for Zitzow Plumbing and at the Scotchman’s Bar for Pee Wee Rehm. In January of 1968 Larry began working for the State of Minnesota Department of Transportation and worked there for 26 years.

Larry was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Eagles Club. He enjoyed hunting pheasants and deer and his many fishing trips to Lake of the Woods. If someone said, “Let’s go fishing!” Larry grabbed his tackle box. He also loved to travel with Myrna and was known to do it at a moments notice, not necessarily knowing where, and letting everyone know as they were going. Larry also liked playing cards and was strict on the rules. He enjoyed music and wished he could play a musical instrument and sing.

After retirement, he became involved in the Hawk Museum in Wolford, N.D., and enjoyed working on the old equipment. He was also involved in the Rosholt Threshing Bee and the Tyler Plow Down.

Larry never met a stranger and he loved to visit. His family was most important to him and he was especially proud of his grandkids. Even as he traveled, he called almost everyday just to hear their voices.

Larry is survived by: his wife, Myrna, Breckenridge; his daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Larry) Terfehr, rural Breckenridge; his son, James (Janet) Burlison, Fairmount; his grandchildren, Jennifer Burlison, Wahpeton, Jordan Burlison (special friend, Jayme Littke), Wahpeton, Jamie Burlison, at home in Fairmount; his sisters, Mary (Glen) Miller, Albany, Ore., Kathryn (Marvin) Callaway, Lebanon, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by, his parents, Lawrence Edward and Mary Fances Burlison.

Arrangements are being made by Joseph Vertin and Sons.

Kari Jo Matthews, 28

Kari Jo Matthews, 28, Lakeville, Minn., formerly of Breckenridge, Minn., died April 17, 2009, at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, Minn.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Breckenridge Lutheran Church, Breckenridge, with the Rev. Mark Manning officiating.

Visitation will be from 4-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Breckenridge Lutheran Church, Breckenridge. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Burial will be at Riverside cemetery, Breckenridge.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Bratlie, Kyle Bratlie, Darrin Steffens, Nick Mauer, Jake Mauer, Michael Mauer, Andy Rangen, Brent Rangen and Clemett Matthews

Kari Jo was born Jan. 25, 1981, at St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge during the Super Bowl. She graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1999 and attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis for three years studying retail purchasing.

On Feb. 4, 2003, she married Patrick Damon Matthews at “The Little White Wedding Chapel” in Las Vegas. She gave birth to McKensie Rae in 2003 and Patrick Damon Jr. in 2004.

Kari worked at the Dairy Queen in Breckenridge during her high school years, and later at Lane Bryant at the Mall of America, Mystic Lake Casino and Hotel, and Jackpot Junction. She was currently employed with Quantrix Valuation in Bloomington, Minn.

The most wonderful things in the world to Kari were her two children. She was a wonderful mother. Family and friends enjoyed her talented artistic side that consisted of drawing, painting, pottery, sewing and baking. She also loved to scrapbook, read and do word puzzles.

She is survived by: her husband, Patrick Matthews, Lakeville; her daughter, McKensie Rae Matthews; her son, Patrick Damon Matthews Jr.; her mother, Debbie (David) Steffens, Breckenridge; her father, Eldon (Kathy) Anderson, St. Cloud, Minn.; her brothers, Anthony Steffens, Breckenridge; Blake Anderson and Grant Anderson, both of St. Cloud; her sisters, Sarah (Jim) Sadowski, Burnsville, and Christina Anderson, St. Cloud; her long time best friend, Kristi (Bogenreif) O’Keefe and her family, Moorhead; her maternal grandparents, Oscar and Julie Bratlie, Lisbon, N.D., Joan Bratlie, Lisbon; her step-grandparents, Allen and Bergit Perry, Fargo, N.D., and Arlen and Rosie Steffens, Wahpeton, N.D.; her mother and father-in-law, Alvita and Anthony Chuck, Atlanta, Ga.; her brother-in-law, Clemett (Desiree) Matthews, Chippewa Falls, Wis.; her sister-in-law, Montseratt Matthews, Miami, Fla.

She was preceded in death by: her great-grandparents, Olive and George Jankowski; her paternal grandparents, Alex and Viola Anderson; and her uncle, Randy Bratlie.

Kari (Anderson) Matthews, 28, of Lakeville, Minn., formerly of Breckenridge, Minn., died Friday, April 17, 2009, at Fairview-Ridges Hospital in Lakeville. Arrangements are being handled by Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge.

Anthony “Tony” O’Keefe, 47

Anthony “Tony” O’Keefe, 47, of Morris, Minn., died Friday, April 17, 2009, at Fairview Southdale Medical Center in Edina, Minn.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 21, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Morris. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 20, at Pedersen Funeral Home and at one hour prior to church services.

Burial will be at Summit cemetery in Morris.

Anthony Leo O’Keefe, son of Michael and Shirley (Bellmore) O’Keefe, was born May 4, 1961 in Breckenridge, Minn. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Catholic Church in Wahpeton, N.D. Tony grew up and received his schooling in Wahpeton and graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1979. After his graduation he worked several jobs until moving to Morris. On April 6, 1985 he was united in marriage to Kathy Kussatz. From this union two children were born. Tony settled in Morris and began working in auto sales. For the last thirteen years, he worked in sales at Morris Auto Plaza.

Tony was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Morris Sports Boosters. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and especially fishing. He fished in several walleye tournaments in the area every year. He also enjoyed golfing and especially spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by: his wife, Kathy O’Keefe, Morris; one son, Corey O’Keefe, Morris; one daughter: Katie O’Keefe (and special friend, Mitch Hufford), Morris; father and mother, Mike and Shirley O’Keefe, Morris; one brother, Tim O’Keefe, Brainerd; three sisters, Barb (Curt) Gehrtz of Fargo, Becky (Chris) Vogel, Morris and Tammy (Michael) Oliver, Melrose; mother-in-law Minnie Kussatz of Morris; two brothers-in-law, Curt Kussatz of Rhinelander, Wisc. and Arnie (Jeanne) Kussatz of West Fargo; six nieces, Jami, Jolbi, Jill, Courtney, Kaitlin and Madison; six nephews, Kevin, Kyle, Zachary, Breydin, Nicholas and Chandler; two great-nieces, Keera and Addison and two great-nephews: Brice and Kaedan. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ira and Catherine Bellmore, Bill and Catherine O’Keefe; and his father-in-law, Earl Kussatz.

Serving as pallbearers for the service are: Jason Carter, Dave Hagen, Rick Hagen, Kevin Beyer, John Kath, Jeff Stein, Kevin Kussatz, and Kyle Kussatz. Honorary Pallbearers are: Tony’s Nephews: Zachary Oliver, Breydin O’Keefe, Nicholas Oliver and Chandler Vogel and Tony’s Nieces:” Jami Kaiser, Jolbi Kussatz, Jill Kussatz, Courtney Vogel, Kaitlin Vogel and Madison O’Keefe.

Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
