Woodrow Almquist
ST. HILAIRE, Minn. -- Woodrow "Woodie" Almquist, 81, St. Hilaire, died July 9, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident that happened on June 26, 2000.
Woodrow Jens Almquist was born Oct. 28, 1918, the son of Jens and Signe (Brink) Almquist, in Black River Township, Pennington County, Minn. He graduated from high school in St. Hilaire, in 1936. He farmed on the family farm until he retired in 1986, and he drove school bus. He married
Verda Eckstein on Oct. 6, 1949, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. They lived in Black River Township. Verda Almquist died June 26, 2000.
He is survived by daughters, Peggy (Dennis) Horner, Inkster, N.D., and Julie Treffry, Moorhead; sons, Gary (Nicki), Fargo, and Rob (Mary), St. Hilaire; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Alton, Davis, Calif., and Basil (Senora), Cummings, N.D.; and sisters, Laura Durman, Pocatello, Idaho, Ollie (Ray) Durman, Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Shirley (Norman) Busse, Thief River Falls.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Edna Carlson and Vera Fehr; three brothers-in-law; and a sister-in-law.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Community cemetery, River Falls Township, Pennington County, Minn.
Peter Thompson III
BAGLEY, Minn. -- Peter M. Thompson III, 22, died as the result of an automobile accident near Mahnomen, Minn., Tuesday, July 11, 2000.
Peter Melvin Thompson III was born Feb. 19, 1978, the son of Peter Jr. and Evelyn (Auginaush) Thompson, in Bagley, Minn., where he graduated from school in 1996. He moved to Minneapolis where he worked for his uncle. He returned in May of this year. He was employed by Peterson Mechanics, Fargo as a sub-contractor for Gordon Construction, Mahnomen.
He is survived by his parents, Bagley; sisters, Cheryl, Bagley, and Carol (Robert Beaulieu) Thompson, Bemidji; and a grandmother, Gertie Auginaush, Bagley.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe Auginaush and Peter and Katy Thompson.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Naytahwaush (Minn.) Sports Complex.
Visitation: 10 a.m. until time of services in the Sports Complex.
Burial: Samuel Memorial Episcopal cemetery, Naytahwaush (Mattson, Mahnomen).
Roger Ulrich
CLEARBROOK, Minn. -- Roger Ulrich, 66, Clearbrook, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.
Roger John Ulrich, was born Nov. 1, 1933, the son of Albert and Bertha (Panitzke) Ulrich, in New Ulm, Minn., where he graduated from high school on May 28, 1952. He attended the University of Minnesota-St. Paul Agricultural College. He married
Kathleen Monson on Oct. 3, 1953, in Winthrop, Minn. In 1955 they moved to Mankato, Minn., where he worked for an electrical contractor and General Electric. In 1959 they moved to Prior Lake, Minn., where he worked for Thermo-King Corporation, Bloomington, Minn., as an electrician. In 1968 they bought a farm in New Prauge, Minn. He and his sons farmed. In 1975 they moved to Bagley, Minn., where he farmed and worked for Local 294 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He retired in 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Clearbrook; sons, Danny (Mary), Dean (Janice), both of Clearbrook and Douglas (Jackie), Bagley; daughters, Joy (Gary) Eck, Gonvick, Minn., Julie (Keith) Roberts, Bemidji, and Jennifer (Eric) Kjensrud, Roosevelt, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; his mother, New Ulm; sisters, Lois (Norm) Barrer, Nicollet, Minn., Margie (Roger) Schultz, New Ulm, and Karen (Dan) Loose, Grayslake, Ill.; and a brother, Richard, New Ulm.
He was preceded in death by his father; and daughter-in-law, Carla Ulrich.
Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Bagley City cemetery.
Jay Roberts
KENNEDY, Minn. -- Jay Roberts, 94, Kennedy, formerly of Lambert, Mont., died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at his daughter's home.
Jay William Roberts was born March 29, 1906, the son of Charles and Maud (Cullup) Roberts, in Pryor, Okla. He moved with his family to Montana in 1910. They lived in the Lambert area. He married
Gertrude Hull on June 7, 1931, in Sidney, Mont. They farmed and ranched in the Lambert area until their retirement in 1978. Gertrude Roberts died in 1980. He moved to Hallock, Minn., in June 1999, and in November he moved to his daughter's home in Kennedy.
He is survived by sons, Eugene (Vera) and David (Paula), both of Lambert; daughters, Barbara (Oliver) Lundell, Kennedy, and Adele (Jerry) Trier, Phoenix; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel Erickson, Malta, Mont.; and a brother, Wayne (Norma), Polson, Mont.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Ethel Roberts, Mabel Frettim and Evelyn Williams; and a brother, Clement.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Christian Missionary Alliance Church, Lambert.
Visitation: Today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Fulkerson Funeral Home, Lambert.
Burial: Lambert cemetery (Hughes, Hallock).
Willard Mattison
BROOKS, Minn. -- Willard C. Mattison, 74, Brooks, died Friday, July 21, 2000, in Hillcrest Nursing Home, Red Lake Falls, Minn.
Willard Conrad Mattison was born Sept. 14, 1925, the son of Ollie and Alpha (Olson) Mattison, in Chisholm, Minn. He farmed and worked for area farmers near Brooks,
He is survived by a sister, Marvelyn Burtwick, Grand Rapids, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon; and a sister, Betty Mattison.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Johnson Funeral Service, Red Lake Falls.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Emardville cemetery, Plummer, Minn.
Alvin Berntson
LENGBY, Minn. -- Alvin W. Berntson, 77, Lengby, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, in Dakota Heartland Hospital, Fargo.
Alvin Willard Berntson was born June 4, 1923, the son of the Rev. Carl and Lydia (Lindquist) Berntson, in Lengby. He graduated from high school in Fosston, Minn., in 1942. He farmed after high school. He owned and operated a school bus. He was a deacon for the Lengby Baptist Church. He married
Helen Solie on Aug. 23, 1953, in Lengby. He worked for Hanna Mining Co., Aurora, Minn., as a truck driver in 1953. They returned to Lengby and farmed from 1954 to 1999. During the later years, he farmed with his son.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Terry, Chicago, Mitch, Logan, Utah, and Ron (Joan), Fosston; four grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Geiger, Burnsville, Minn., and Lillian (Rod) Binder, Pinewood, Minn.; and a brother-in-law, William Binder, Shevlin, Minn.
He was preceded in death by sisters, May Binder and Thyra Berntson; brothers, David and an infant brother; and a brother-in-law, Charles Geiger.
Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Lengby Baptist Church.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Oakland cemetery.
