William Nelson
FOSSTON, Minn. -- William "Bill" Nelson, 85, Fosston, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, in First Care Hospital, Fosston.
William Lionel Nelson was born Aug. 11, 1915, the son of Severt and Mary (Krohn) Nelson, in Hillsboro, N.D. He grew up and attended school in Badger, Minn., in 1939. He married
Mildred Mickelson on March 23, 1940, in Badger. He worked for the Badger Creamery and later farmed near Badger. They moved to Fosston in 1962, where he was a Boilerman Engineer and was the Union Stewart at the Land O' Lakes Drying Plant. He retired in 1977.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Forrest (Karen), Climax, Minn., Wally (Peggy), Clearbrook, Minn., Tom (Jodi), Fosston, and Peter (Mona), Dayton, Minn.; a daughter, Susan (Mark) Nohner, Baudette, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, LaVerne (Harley) Munson, Seafern, Fla.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Muriel Given, Dagney Carlstrom, Lillian Briedenbach and Ruth Sillerude; and brothers, Wallace and Elmore.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Hope Lutheran Church, Fosston.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Hope Lutheran cemetery, Fosston.
Angeline Sumner
RED LAKE, Minn. -- Angeline Sumner, 85, Red Lake, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, in Jourdain-Perpich Extended Care Facility, Red Lake.
Angeline Catherine Strong was born April 6, 1915, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Anderson) Strong, in Red Lake, where she attended school. She married
Simon Sumner on May 30, 1931, in Red Lake. She worked as a receptionist for the Littlerock Community Health Station. Simon Sumner died in 1992.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty (Doug Cloud) Beaulieu, Minneapolis; sons, Joe (Mary), Ed and Henry, all of Red Lake; 22 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, John, Redby, Minn.
She was preceded in death by sons, Andrew, Douglas, Simon Jr. and Richard; a daughter, Thelma; five brothers; and seven sisters.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Red Lake.
Visitation: Begins 2 p.m. today in Little Rock Community Center.
Burial: Red Lake Catholic cemetery (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
Melvin Zitzow
McINTOSH, Minn. -- Melvin H. Zitzow, 78, Moorhead, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in the McIntosh Manor Nursing Home.
Melvin Henry Zitzow was born Oct. 28, 1921, the son of Henry and Esther (Loebrick) Zitzow, in Luce, Minn. He grew up in the Vergas, Minn., area. He attended school in Frazee and Vergas. He graduated from high school in Perham, Minn. He worked for the Franklin Fence Co., Vergas, for area farmers and for the Perham newspaper as a typesetter. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married
Beatrice Northfield in 1944, in England. He returned to the United States in 1945 and Beatrice returned one year later. They lived in Thief River Falls, where he worked for the Thief River Falls Times newspaper and farmed in the area. They moved to East Grand Forks. He worked for the Grand Forks Herald until 1987, when he retired. He worked part-time for the State of Minnesota at Fisher's Landing Rest Area on Minnesota Highway 2. Beatrice Zitzow died in 1995. In April 1997, he moved to Moorhead.
He is survived by sons, Wayne (Ruthie) Moorhead, Darryl (Thea), Ogema, Minn., and Rocky, Chicago; four grandchildren; and a brother, Gordon (Bernice), Moorhead.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, David-Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, and one hour before services in the church.
Mildred Strom
ERSKINE, Minn. -- Mildred Strom, 88, Erskine, formerly of Crookston, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine.
Mildred Radke was born July 7, 1912, the daughter of August and Molly (Myers) Radke, in Fisher, Minn., where she attended school. She married
Melvin Strom on Nov. 16, 1929, in Fisher. They lived in Crookston an Beltrami, Minn. They returned to Crookston. She worked for Crookston restaurants as a cook and waitress. She operated the cafe at the American Crystal factory, Crookston. Melvin Strom died Jan. 17, 1974.
She is survived by daughters, Lorraine (Dana) Bahan, Lexington, Ill., and Judy (Roland) Boucher, Erskine; sons, Arnie (Elaine), Belfair, Wash., James (Katy), Perham, Minn., Earl (Marilyn), Kent, Wash., and Howie (Carol), Moses Lake, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Solange Radke and Liz Weiss, both of Crookston.
She was preceded in death by an infant son; an infant daughter; a grandson; a sister, Frieda Radke; and brothers, Elmer Radke, Millard Radke, and Eldo Weiss.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Crookston.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, and one hour before services in the church.

Zachry Flateland
ROSEAU, Minn. -- Zachry M. Flateland, infant son of Mario Flateland and Nicole Wenzel, Roseau, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Zachry M. Flateland was born May 11, 2000, the son of Mario Flateland and Nicole Wenzel, in Roseau.
He is survived by his parents, Roseau; grandparents, Tammy and Terry Olson, Roseau, Tina Crandall, Salol, Minn., and Marvel Flateland, Trail, Minn.; and great-grandparents, Wayne and Merlys Wenzel, New Richland, Minn., Francis and Annette Crandall, Roosevelt, Minn., Orvel and Harriet Olson, Roseau, and Howard and Sylvia Flateland, Trail.
Services: 3 p.m. today, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau.
Visitation: Two hours before services.
Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery.
Petra Eck
GONVICK, Minn. -- Petra Eck, 76, Gonvick, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Petra Nelson was born July 30, 1924, the daughter of Nels and Nora Nelson, in Fosston, Minn. She grew up and attended school in Gully, Minn. She married
Roger Eck on July 13, 1944, in Crookston. They lived and farmed in the Gonvick area. In 1968, they moved to Monticello, Minn., and returned to Gonvick in 1971. She worked for Winsor Lefse Plant and for the Gonvick School. Roger Eck died April 25, 1991.
She is survived by daughters, Connie (Jim) Williams, Proctor, Minn., and Lori (David) Churness, Clearbrook; sons, Kenneth (Nancy), Proctor, and Darrell, Fargo; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Irene Carlson, Gully, Gladys Haugen and Shirley (Donald) Sundquist, both of Proctor, Doris (Richard), Ware, Duluth, Audrey Svien, Minneapolis, and Yvonne (Willis) Klema, Gonvick.
She was preceded in death by sons, Rodney and Theodore; a great-grandson; brothers, Kermit, Joel, and James; and sisters, Jeanette, Mae, and Patty.
Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Samhold Lutheran Church, Gonvick.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Samhold Lutheran cemetery (Cease, Bagley, Minn.).
Marian Thompson
LENGBY, Minn. -- Marian Thompson, 78, Lengby, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, in Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine, Minn.
Marian June Gosling was born June 18, 1922, the daughter of Harold and Mary (Weed) Gosling, in Cut Bank, Mont. She was adopted by Otto and Mima Borrison in 1925. They lived in Avalanche, Wis. She graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, with a degree in English and music education. She worked for one year in Chicago in a war effort factory. She taught for one year in Hutchinson, Minn., before moving to Bagley, Minn., to teach English and physical education. She married
Kenneth Thompson on May 30, 1946, in Bagley. In 1948 they moved to Breckenridge, Minn., where she did substitute teaching. In 1966, she received her library science degree at Bemidji State University. She taught English and was head librarian in Campbell, Minn. They retired in May 1977. They spent winters in Pharr, Texas.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Paul, Lengby; a daughter, Diane, Wayzata, Minn.; a sister, Dorothy Kruger, Madison, Wis.; and a brother, Kermit Parker, LaFarge, Wis.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth; and sisters, Lorraine, Mayfair, Verna and Alene.
Memorial services: 11: 30 a.m. Saturday, Fridhem Lutheran Church, Lengby.
Burial: Fridhem Lutheran cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Fridhem Lutheran Church (Carlin-Hoialmen, Fosston).
