Phyllis Brustad
BAGLEY, Minn. -- Phyllis Brustad, 94, formerly of Bagley, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, in Eldercare on Main Nursing Home, Minneapolis, where she had lived since 1995.
Phyllis Nelson was born Oct. 27, 1906, the daughter of Norman and Caroline (Zutter) Nelson, in Eau Claire, Wis. She moved with her family to Phillips County, Mont., where she attended school. In the early 1920s they moved to Bagley, where she graduated from high school in 1926. She attended Normal School Training in Bagley and Bemidji Teachers College. She taught school near Bagley during the 1930s. She married
Arthur Brustad on Jan. 1, 1936, in Bagley. They operated Art's Superette. Arthur Brustad died in 1977. She worked at Clearwater County Historical Society. In 1986 she moved to Minneapolis.
She is survived by sons, Dick (Janet) and Ken (Pamela); six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Adeline, Clarence, Ralph, Floyd, Ferne and LeRoy.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Cease Funeral Home, Bagley.
Visitation: One hour before services.
Burial: Bagley City cemetery.
Clare O'Dell
NIELSVILLE, Minn. -- Clare B. Hestad O'Dell, 74, England, formerly of Nielsville, died of cancer at home.
Clare B. Hestad was born Jan. 24, 1926, the daughter of Millard and Ella (Winden) Hestad, in Nielsville. She graduated from high school in Climax, Minn., in 1944. She attended Concordia College and University of Minnesota, where she received a bachelor of arts degree in 1948. She moved, in 1951, to California, where she was married
and taught English for 44 years. She retired in England in 1992.
She is survived by a daughter, Lori O'Dell, England; a son, David, Los Angeles; a brother, Ervan, Seattle; and sisters, Margaret Buness, Crookston, Esther Hausmann, Port Townsend, Wash., Inga Reed, Mahnomen, Minn., and Doris Olson, Fargo.
Services: Were held in Los Angeles and England.
Willard Peterson
FERTILE, Minn. -- Willard "Bill" Peterson, 77, Fertile, died Friday June 9, 2000, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Willard Elvin Peterson was born March 17, 1923, the son of Pete and Ellen (Lofgren) Peterson, in Waskish, Minn. He attended school near Winger, Minn. He worked for Wunder-Klien and Donahue, Minneapolis. He served in the U.S. Army from March 1943 to January 1946. He returned to work in Minneapolis. He married
Grace Bakke on April 8, 1950, in Minneapolis. He retired after 43 years with Wunder-Klien and Donahue. They moved to Fertile in 1986. He worked for the Fertile Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Charles and Paul, both of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Daniel (Michelle Jayne), New Hope, Minn.; four grandchildren; and brothers, Harvey, Cross Lake, Minn., and Walter, Chula Vista, Calif.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Hildur Watson; and brothers, Victor, Kelvin, Verger, Lloyd, and Seller.
Services: 2 p.m. today, Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile (Erikson-Vik, Fertile).
Burial: Lima cemetery, Winger, Minn.
Howard Conneran
FISHER, Minn. -- Howard G. Conneran, 83, Bloomington, Minn., formerly of Fisher, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis.
Howard Gordon Conneran was born Oct. 24, 1916, the son of James and Ellen (Gavin) Conneran, in Crookston. He grew up near Fisher. He attended school in Fisher and in Crookston. He graduated from high school in Fisher in 1934. He attended North Dakota Agricultural College, Fargo and began farming. He married
Margaret Baskerville on June 3, 1946, in Crookston. He worked as an engineer for the Grand Forks Air Force Base, and later for American Crystal Sugar Co., Crookston. After farming, he worked for J.R. Simplot Company, Grand Forks, as an engineer, retiring in 1976. He taught an engineering course in East Grand Forks Area Vocational Technical Institute from 1975 to 1977. Margaret Conneran died May 29, 1987. In 1995, he moved to Bloomington.
He is survived by daughters, Carolyn (Tom) Mergens, Patricia Conneran and Diane Conneran, all of Eagan, Minn., Helen (Earl) Lysaker, Wellington, Fla., Mary (Don) Matteson, Fergus Falls, Minn., and Colleen (Jim) Ricard, Bemidji; sons, Howard Jr., Moorhead, and Thomas (Carmen), Andover, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; and a brother, James, Fargo.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Haltrudus "Connie" Conneran, and Mildred Rupe; and brothers, Lloyd and Emmett.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Crookston.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Greenwood cemetery, Fisher.
Frieda Erickson
LANCASTER, Minn. -- Frieda Erickson, 90, Lancaster, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, in Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center, Hallock, Minn., where she had lived since August 1998.
Frieda Mattson was born Dec. 27, 1909, the daughter of Jacob and Alma (Bylund) Mattson, in Poppleton Township, Kittson County, Minn. She graduated from high school in Lancaster, in 1925. She married
Herman Erickson on Nov. 4, 1931, in Hallock. They lived and farmed in Lancaster. In 1948 they opened Red's Cafe, which they operated until 1965. They moved to Thief River Falls and later returned to Lancaster. They retired in 1986. Herman Erickson died Sept. 15, 1986.
She is survived by a daughter, Joyce (Royce) Glad, Lancaster; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dale.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Sion Lutheran Church, Lancaster.
Visitation: 6: 30 to 7: 30 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock.
Burial: Riverview Memorial Garden cemetery, Lancaster.
Marvin Sherman
ROSEAU, Minn. -- Marvin L. Sherman, 89, Roseau, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, in Warroad (Minn.) Care Center.
Marvin L. Sherman was born March 19, 1911, the son of John and Mary (Johnson) Sherman, in Arco, Minn. He moved with his family to Roseau. He farmed near Roseau for 60 years. He married
Thelma Rosen on Nov. 1, 1938, in Roseau. He was the fire warden from 1954 to 1996.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Marvin (Judy), Eugene, Ore.; a daughter, Renae (Dave Nelson) Sherman, St. Paul; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Lillian Anderson, Arco, and Esther (Glen) Johnson and Gladys (Irvin) Johnson, both of Roseau.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; brothers, Alfred, Elmer and Frank; and sisters, Valma Sonsteng, Ida and Tina
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Bethel Lutheran Church, Stafford Township, Minn.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. devotional service, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau.
Ruth Stene
ADA, Minn. -- Ruth H. Stene, 80, Ada, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Ruth Harriet Eastvold was born Sept. 17, 1920, the daughter of Gust and Millie (Quame) Eastvold, in Borup, Minn., where she graduated from high school. She married
Ernest Stene on Sept. 14, 1946, in Borup.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Sandra (Otto) Bertsch, Hillsboro, N.D.; sons, Kenneth (Delane) and Roger (Sandy), both of Ada; seven grandchildren; a sister, Alice Erickson, New Richland, Minn.; a brother, Trumen (Bette), Borup; a brother-in-law, Edgar Hegreberg, Ada; and sisters-in-law, Ordella Eastvold, Glyndon, Minn., and Margie Scott, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.
She was preceded in death by brothers, John and Oscar; and sisters, Marvella and Bernice.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, East Marsh River Lutheran Church, Ada.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Fredrikson Funeral Home, Ada.
