Arthur Krogstad
FERTILE, Minn. -- Arthur Krogstad, 79, Fertile, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile.
Arthur Krogstad was born Jan. 4, 1921, the son of Richard and Anna (Noto) Krogstad, in Norman County, Minn. He graduated from high school in Fertile. He farmed his grandfather's farm near Fertile. He married
Pearl Pederson on Oct. 30, 1959, in Rindal, Minn.. She died in 1994. He farmed until moving to the nursing home this past June.
He is survived by sons, Kevin (Arlene), Linton, N.D., Les, Fertile, Jeff (Julie), Williston, and Darin, Hastings, Minn.; daughters, Janet Krogstad, Roseville, Minn., and Angie Krogstad, Crookston; four grandchildren; a brother, Clifford (Jean), Fertile; and a sister, Doris (Edgar) Swenson, Lindsborg, Kan.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Faaberg Lutheran Church, Rindal.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services all in the church.
Burial: Faaberg Lutheran cemetery (Mattson, Mahnomen, Minn.).
Alice Grove
ROOSEVELT, Minn. -- Alice M. Grove, 83, Roosevelt, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Roseau (Minn.) Area Hospital.
Alice M. Estling was born April 17, 1917, the daughter of Joe and Sena Estling, in Greenbush, Minn. They moved to Montevideo, Minn., where they lived until moving back to Greenbush. In 1935, they moved to Roosevelt. She graduated from high school in Warroad, Minn. She married
Carlos Grove on Nov. 4, 1939. She worked at Marvin Windows, The Farmers Union, D.F.L., the steam and gas show and Mount Carmel Church.
She is survived by a son, Leon (Janet), Roosevelt; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Luther, Roosevelt; and a sister, Evelyn (Laurence) Arnesen, Roosevelt.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Adlyn Estling; and brothers, Ole "Bud", Jay Sr. and Caesar.
Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Mount Carmel Lutheran Church, Roosevelt.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church (Helgeson, Warroad, Minn.).
Elmer Knudtson
HALSTAD, Minn. -- Elmer L. Knudtson, 98, Halstad, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, in Halstad Lutheran Memorial Home, Halstad.
Elmer Leroy Knudtson was born Jan. 8, 1902, the son of Louis and Louise (Hagen) Knudtson, in Canby, Minn., where he attended school. He moved with his family to Good Hope Township, Norman County, Minn., where he also attended school. He worked for area farmers and also in Montana as a sheepherder. He returned home and began farming. He married
Grace Langhus on June 24, 1934. They farmed for 33 years and retired in 1967, when they moved to Halstad.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Robert (Rose), Moorhead and John (Jeri), Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Mary (Duane) Trandem, Halstad; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Gusta (Milton) Nielsen, Joplin, Mo., and Florence (Leo) Myxter, Casselton, N.D.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Sternad; an infant grandson; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Services: 10: 30 Tuesday, Bethany Lutheran Church, Shelly, Minn.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Bethany Lutheran cemetery (Fredrikson, Halstad).
Bonita Knutson
FERTILE, Minn. -- Bonita "Bonnie" Knutson, 64, Fertile, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.
Bonita Mae Knutson was born May 25, 1936, the daughter of Julius and Bessie (Clemens) Knutson, in Fertile, where she graduated from high school in 1954. She worked for Fingerhut Corporation in Minneapolis and St. Cloud, Minn., from 1954 to 1969. She was self-employed from 1969 to 1978. She owned the Top Notch Steak House, Fertile, from 1972 to 1975. In 1978, she returned to working for businesses in Minneapolis and Phoenix until her retirement in 1988.
She is survived by brothers, Orvis (Lori) and Paul (Mary), both of Minneapolis, and Vernon (Marion), East Grand Forks; and a sister, Judy (Santi) Belli, Phoenix.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services: Will be held at a later date (Erikson-Vik, Fertile).
Dorothy Stevens
BAGLEY, Minn. -- Dorothy A. Stevens, 71, Bagley, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in Clearwater County Memorial Hospital, Bagley.
Dorothy Ann Auginaush was born July 4, 1929, the daughter of John and Louise (Gagnon) Auginaush, in Red Lake, Minn. She grew up and attended school in White Earth, Minn., and Flandreau, S.D. She married
Darwin Stevens on July 25, 1952, in Bagley. She worked as a cook for the Elderly Nutrition Program. Darwin Stevens died in 1997.
She is survived by sons, John and Wayne (Alice), both of Bagley, and Gordon (Sherry), Inger, Minn.; daughters, Donna (Joseph) Goodwin, Barbara "Bam" Stevens, Susan (Nolan) Stevens, and Lori (Donny) Fairbanks, all of Bagley; 27 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Norman Auginaush and George Auginaush, Richard Fox, Earl Fox, Raymond Fox, and Louie Fox, all of Bagley; and sisters, Isabelle Thompson, Bagley and Susan Headbird, Cass Lake.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren; a brother, Joe Auginaush; and two sisters.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Phillip's Episcopal Church, Rice Lake.
Visitation: After noon Thursday, to time of services in the church.
Burial: Church cemetery (Cease, Bagley).
Gilman Hoven
ADA, Minn. -- Gilman Hoven, 69, Ada, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Gilman Hoven was born Oct 2, 1931, the son of Gilbert and Emma (Larson) Hoven, in Ada. He attended high school in Borup, Minn. He farmed with his family. He married
Beverly Vilmo on Oct. 11, 1952, in Ada. They farmed near Ada. In the late 1950s they purchased the home farm. He also did custom combining, hauled gravel and other work. He retired in 1991 from farming. He later did chemical spraying for the county and worked with his sons.
He is survived by his wife; children, Howard (Joan), Mentor, Minn., Steven, Belle Fourche, S.D., Deb (Ron) Mickels, Fargo and Eric (Stacey), Ada; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; and sisters, Karen (Leonard) Kappes, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Helen Kappes, Lake Park, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Winchester Lutheran Church, Borup.
Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. today, with an 8: 30 p.m. prayer service, Fredrikson Funeral Home, Ada.
Burial: Winchester Lutheran cemetery.
Myrtle Urness
FERTILE, Minn. -- Myrtle A. Urness, 88, Fertile, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in Fairmeadow Nursing Home, Fertile, where she had lived since September.
Myrtle A. Kroken was born April 23, 1912, the daughter of Ingbert and Olea (Paasche) Kroken, in Esplee, Minn. She moved with her family to Bemidji, where she attended school. She married
Melvin Urness on March 26, 1929, in Bemidji. They lived in Russia Township, Polk County, Minn. In 1939, they bought a farm in Onstad Township, where they farmed until the early 1970s. Melvin Urness died in 1977. She moved to Fertile. She worked for Dahlgren Seed Co. from 1967 to 1974.
She is survived by sons, Milo, Red Lake Falls, Minn., and Mylan (Janice), Beltrami, Minn.; daughters, Marilyn (Kenneth) Bernstein, Cass Lake, Minn., Maxine Witt and Marsha (Vernon) Olson, both of Fertile; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Hazel (Leo) Anderson, Fosston, Minn., and Sylvia Davis, Calimesa, Calif.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Blanche Urness; a brother, Leslie Kroken; and a brother-in-law, Roy Davis.
Memorial services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
