Larry Sorenson
HALLOCK, Minn. -- Larry O. Sorenson, 52, Hallock, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Larry O. Sorenson was born Nov. 25, 1948, the son of Orel and Nadine (McGovern) Sorenson, in Hallock, where he graduated from high school in 1966. He attended Fergus Falls Community College and served in the U.S. Army. He returned to Hallock, where he married
Dawalla Lileks on Aug. 15, 1970. He farmed for an uncle before taking a job with American Crystal Sugar Co., Drayton, N.D. He later farmed on his own until his retirement due to health.
He is survived by a son, Patrick (Tonya), Rochester, Minn.; a daughter, Tina (Kyle) Dorian, Pembina, N.D.; three grandchildren; a brother, Gary (Cynthia), Bemidji; and sisters, Tammy (Brad) Arin, Grafton, N.D., and Carol (Jim) Gierszewski, Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock.
Burial: Greenwood cemetery, Hallock.
John Stennes
ERSKINE, Minn. -- John S. Stennes, 82, Park Rapids, Minn., formerly of Erskine, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, in St. Joseph's Area Hospital, Park Rapids.
John S. Stennes was born June 16, 1918, the son of Sivert and Anne (Myre) Stennes, in Erskine, where he graduated from high school. He moved to Roseau, Minn. He attended Bemidji State College, where he studied in the business school. He worked at various jobs until he began working at the Red Owl Corporation, Fergus Falls, Minn. He served in the U.S. Army. He married
Pearl Fish on Feb. 4, 1945. He was discharged from military service on Nov. 5, 1945. They moved to Park Rapids, where they bought the Red Owl grocery store in 1948. They sold the Red Owl store om tje 1960's and opened J&B; Auto Parts, which he operated until retiring in 1982.
He is survived by his wife, Park Rapids; sons, John (Marianne "Dolly"), Grand Forks, and Richard, Park Rapids; three granddaughters; and brothers, Kenneth (Polly), Park Rapids and Mesa, Ariz., and Gordon (Avonne), Mesa.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Nordstrom; and brothers, Alvin, Lars and Ralph.
Services: 11: 30 a.m. today, Calvary Lutheran Church, Park Rapids.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Bethel cemetery, Park Rapids.
Military rites: Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post No. 212, Park Rapids.
Leona Miovac
BORDER, Minn. -- Leona E. Miovac, 90, Anaheim, Calif., formerly of Border, died Nov. 23, 2000, in Autumn Years Cottage, Anaheim, where she had lived since 1996.
Leona Ellen Blake was born July 21, 1910, the daughter of Clarence and Rose (Bilyeu) Blake, in Burt, Iowa. She moved with her family to Border, Minn., where she attended school. She graduated from high school in International Falls, Minn. She married
Helmer Olson in 1929. She married
Halvor "Van" Miovac on Jan. 12, 1941, in Roseau, Minn. They farmed in the Border area until 1956, when they moved to Albert Lea, Minn. They were in the house construction business. She also worked as a cook at the Albert Lea Woolworth store. In 1961, they moved to Fullerton, Calif., where she worked at the Broadway Department Store. They retired in 1975 and spent summers in northern Minnesota and winters in Fullerton. Halvor Miovac died in 1990.
She is survived by daughters, Mildred (Albert) Hasbargen, Border, Shirley (John) Miovac, Yorba Linda, Calif., Betty Anderson, Corpus Christi, Texas, Vivian Neumann, Brooklyn Center, Minn., and Kathylene (David) Peters, LaPalma, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by a grandson; a sister, Jeannette Hasbargen; and a brother, Vern.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Clementson (Minn.) Lutheran Church, Clementson.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. devotional service, Helgeson Funeral Home, Baudette, Minn.
Burial: Riverdale cemetery, Border.
Eugene Abbott
FERTILE, Minn. -- Eugene E. Abbott, 60, Dover, Del., formerly of Fertile, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000 in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.
Eugene E. Abbott was born July 22, 1940, the son of Earl and Alice (Anderson) Abbott, in Mentor, Minn., where he graduated from high school in 1958. He received a bachelor's degree from St. Cloud (Minn.) State University and a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., in 1979. He worked in public works and transportation as an urban planner. Since 1993, he worked as director of the division of policy and planning for the Delaware Department of Transportation.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Baker) Abbott; a son, Matthew, Annapolis, Md.; a granddaughter; his mother, Fertile; stepsons, John Donovan, Caldwell, N.J., Kevin Donovan, Baltimore, and Brian Donovan, Huntington, N.Y.; a brother, Norman (Janice Nelson) Abbott, Seattle; and sisters: Phylis (Dean) Kittleson, Mentor, and Audrey (Dennis) Flemming, Urbandale, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile.

Francis Ness
ST. VINCENT, Minn. -- Francis Ness, 73, St. Vincent, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, in Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center, Hallock.
Francis Ness was born April 10, 1927, the son of Helmer and Florinda Ness, in Erskine, Minn. He graduated from high school in Thief River Falls. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married
Dorothy Koons on June 8, 1951, in Westhope, N.D. They lived in Mohall, N.D., before moving to Noyes, Minn. In 1971 they moved to St. Vincent. He worked for the Great Northern Railway for 11 years and then for Jensen Brokerage in Pembina, N.D. He was manager at the brokerage company until retiring in 1993.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Pamela (Jerry) Anderson, East Grand forks, Cheryl (Jerry) Cicha, Fargo, and Laurie Ness, Grand Forks; sons, Michael, St. Vincent, Jon (Kim), Devils Lake, and Daniel (Dawn), West Fargo; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; brothers, Gerald (Beverly), Moorhead, and Ronald (Darlyne), Thief River Falls; and a half sister, Shirley Sermonwich, Hibbing, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Stella; and a brother, Nolan.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Assumption Catholic Church, Pembina.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.
Burial: St. Vincent cemetery (Hughes, Hallock, Minn.).
Joseph Rapacz
ARGYLE, Minn. -- Joseph B. Rapacz, 64, Auburn, Wash., formerly of Argyle, died of cancer Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at home.
Joseph B. Rapacz was born Feb. 29, 1936.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Philomene (Narloch); children, Debbie, Kevin, Gail and Todd; nine grandchildren; brothers, Floyd, Argyle, Francis, East Grand Forks, and Adolph, Shelton, Wash.; and a sister, Margaret Pietruszewski, East Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and five siblings.
Mabel Krueger
LAKE BRONSON, Minn. -- Mabel Krueger, 79, Lake Bronson, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, in Karlstad (Minn.) Nursing Center.
Mabel Nay was born March 11, 1921, the daughter of Paul and Blenda (Blomquist) Nay, in Hallock, Minn., where she attended school. She married
Lorensz "Larry" Krueger on Oct. 21, 1946, in Hallock. In 1947, they moved to California, where she cooked at several schools. In 1969, she moved back to Minnesota and worked at Arctic Cat Co. in Karlstad and Thief River Falls. Lorensz Krueger died Aug. 22, 1970.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Walter) Braget, Lake Bronson; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Lee and Byron, both of Lake Bronson, and Boyd, Fourtown, Minn.; and sisters, Adeline Johnson and Rose Auguston, both of Lake Bronson, and Margaret (Eddie) Simpson, Fremont, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel; and brothers, Toby and Floyd.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Zion Lutheran Church, Lake Bronson.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Riverside cemetery, Lake Bronson (Hughes, Hallock).
