Sophie Miller
LA CRESCENT, Minn. - Sophie Miller, 103, of La Crescent, Minn., died on Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at the La Crescent Healthcare Center. She was born icon on March 12, 1895, in rural Hokah, Minn. to Fred and Louise (Fuhrer) Truempi. She married icon William Miller on Nov. 28, 1916, in La Crescent. They had been married icon for 53 years at the time of his death in 1970. Sophie was a member of Church of the Crucifixion Parish in La Crescent and a member of St. Bridgett's Circle and the Honorary Golden Age Circle.
She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Groen of Plymouth, Iowa and Angeline (James) Hofer of La Crescent; two sons, Ernest (Mary) Miller of La Crescent and George (Evelyn) Miller of St. Joseph Ridge, rural La Crosse, Wis.; two daughters-in-law, Mary Joan Miller of Beaverton, Ore. and Betty Miller of Houston, Minn.; twenty-four grandchildren; forty-five great-grandchildren; and twelve great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, William and Harvey Miller; two grandchildren, Darryl Miller and James B. Miller; two sisters and a brother.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, at Crucifixion Catholic Church, La Crescent, with Msgr. Donald W. Grubisch, Celebrant and Msgr. Richard Speltz and Rev. John F. Vincent, Concelebrants. Burial will be in the Crucifixion Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until departing for the church. A rosary will be recited on Monday at 8 p.m.

Ines E. Dinger
HOKAH, Minn. - Ines E. Dinger, 79, of Hokah, Minn., died on Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at her home. She was born icon on April 5, 1919, in Sparta, Wis., to William and Ethel (Kroll) Schultz. She married icon Herman G. Dinger on Dec. 18, 1941 in Norwalk, Wis. He died on July 15, 1988. Ines was a member of St., Peter's Catholic Church in Hokah and a member of the Parish Alter Society. She had worked at the La Crosse Autolite for many years and later worked at St. Michael's Childrens Home for twenty years, retiring in 1980.
She is survived by a daughter, Rita Watters of Hokah; four grandchildren, Laura (Paul) Giertych of Holmen, Wis., Brian Watters and Rodney Watters, both of La Crosse, and Jeff Watters of Hokah; six great-grandchildren; five sisters, Margaret Semann and Ruth (Delmar) Donsky, both of Norwalk, Wis., Beulah Sanders of Mindoro, Wis., Marion Semann and Edwina (Maurice) Olson, both of Sparta, Wis.; seven brothers, Harvey (Ann) Schultz and Theodore Schultz, both of Mindoro, Wis., Leo (Katherine) Schultz, Ervin Schultz, Victor Schultz, Kermit Schultz, and William (Carrie) Schultz all of Sparta. In addition to her husband, Herman, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Eunice Dinger; two granddaughters, Sarah and Patricia Watters; a grandson, Daniel Watters; and two sisters, Blanche Wagner and Eveline Schmitz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Hokah. The Rev. Paul J. Breza will officiate. Burial will be at St. John The Baptist Catholic Cemetery in rural Norwalk, Wis. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent, Minn. on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.; and at the church on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. A rosary will be recited Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Lydia E. Peterson
CALEDONIA, Minn. - Lydia E. Peterson, 89, of Caledonia, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at the Lutheran Home, Caledonia.
She was born icon Dec. 3, 1908, in Union township, Houston County, Minn., to August and Clara (Burmester) Ranzenberger. On March 29, 1932, she married icon Oscar H. Peterson in Caledonia, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 1966.
Survivors include a son, Donald (Marlyn) Peterson of West Salem; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Peterson of Upper Marlboro, Md., Steven (Naomi) Peterson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Julie (Jay) Gerondale of Sandy, Utah; a great-grandchild, Madisyn Gerondale, also of Sandy, Utah; a brother, Arlyn (Ruth) Ranzenberger of North Fort Meyer, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband, Lydia was preceded in death by a son, Gale; her parents; a sister, Olga Ranzenberger; and a brother, Theodore Ranzenberger.
Funeral services will be Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at 11 a.m. from St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. William Runke and Rev. Bill Limmer will officiate. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Home, both of Caledonia. The Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia, is in charge of arrangements.

Josephine D. (Gerke) Kendhammer Evenson
WABASHA, Minn. - Josephine D. (Gerke) Kendhammer Evenson, 89, of Wabasha, Minn., and formerly of La Crosse and Mondovi, Wis., died Thursday morning, October 22, 1998, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Wabasha. She was born icon Sept. 4, 1909, on Grandad Bluff in La Crosse, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Stroeh) Gerke. On Jan. 21, 1930, she married icon William Kendhammer in La Crosse. He died February 14, 1949. Following her husband's death she went to work to support her three children. She waitressed at Club 14 restaurant in La Crosse, later becoming its owner. In 1959, she moved to Mondovi, where she owned and operated Jo's Sportsman's Bar. She sold the business in 1968. She then worked for the Presto Co. in Eau Claire, where she made ammunition for the Viet Nam War. She retired in 1974. She moved from Mondovi to Wabasha in 1979.
Josephine was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha, and its Council of Catholic Women. She was also a member of the Wabasha American Legion and VFW auxiliaries. Her accomplishments include raising three children as a widow; a survivor of the Great Depression; and working in the first union shop in La Crosse. She also was a fundraiser for St. Thomas More facility in La Crosse. She was an avid Minnesota Twin and Green Bay Packer fan. She also enjoyed traveling around the continent, and bird watching, especially cardinals. She also had a never ending quest for a picture of a white squirrel.
Josephine is survived by daughters, JoAnn Swain of River Falls, Wis., Judith and her husband, Hardy Schierts of Wabasha, Minn., and Jeannie Kendhammer and her companion, Rodney Tousey of Fond du Lac, Wis.; grandchildren, Amy Schierts, Hal Schierts, Dawn Engel and Shawn Tischer; great-grandson, Travis Engel; sisters, Matilda (Tillie) Beranek, Mildred (Millie) Kaiser and Dolores Knobloch, all of La Crosse; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Ronnie Gerke Clarence and Marian Gerke, Gilbert and Joyce Gerke, Liz Gerke, Doris Gerke and Bonnie Gerke, all of La Crosse; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; brothers, Alvin, Leo, Edward and Carl Gerke; and sister, Florence Schames.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. Felix Catholic Church, with the Reverend Gerald Conway officiating. Interment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery, La Crosse, at 2 p.m.
Casket bearers will be Amy Schierts, Hal Schierts, Dawn Engel, Shawn Tischer, LaVerne Kaiser and Bruce Kaiser.
Friends may call at St. Felix Catholic Church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials are preferred to the Wabasha Public Library. The Abbott Funeral Home of Wabasha is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Barbara Housker
MABEL, Minn. - Ruby Barbara Housker, 74, of Mabel, Minn., died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at the Tweeten/Lutheran Health Care Center in Spring Grove, Minn. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, at Scheie Lutheran Church, rural Mabel, Minn., with burial in church cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at the Roble Funeral Home, Spring Grove, Minn.; and one hour prior to services at the church.

Thelma E. Erickson
MABEL, Minn. - Thelma E. Erickson, 87, formerly of Mabel, Minn., died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at the Rochester Health Care Center in Rochester, Minn. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, at the Mabel First Lutheran Church, Mabel with the Rev. Lloyd Menke officiating. Burial will be in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, at the Mengis Funeral Home, Mabel, Minn.; and one hour prior to services at the church.

Paul V. Soltow
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. - Paul V. Soltow, 93, of Spring Valley, Minn., died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn. He was born icon Feb. 8, 1905, in Cresco, Iowa. Paul married icon Lois Goldsworthy on Sept. 22, 1925, in Cresco, Iowa. She died in 1987.
He is survived by one son Neil (Arleen) Soltow of Mabel, Minn.; one daughter, Lucile Ginapp of Dexter, Minn.; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Oliver Soltow of Cresco, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; an infant son; and one sister, Lois Moses.
He grew up in the Cresco, Iowa area and graduated from Cresco High School. He had been a resident of the Spring Valley Care Center for three years. Paul was self-employed with feed and grain sales. He was involved in the youth square dancing group in Mabel for many years.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at Faith United Methodist Church, Spring Valley. Rev. James Ross officiating. Burial in Kendallville Cemetery, Kendallville, Iowa. Friends may call from 4:30 p.m. till 7 p.m. today at Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home, Spring Valley, Minn.

Doris I. Riede
CALEDONIA, Minn. - Doris I. Riede, 76, of Caledonia, Minn. and formerly of White Bear Lake, Minn. died Thursday, September 18, 1997 at the Lutheran Home, Caledonia.
She was born icon July 12, 1921 in Spring Grove, Minn. to Oliver G. and Minnie (Trehus) Ellingson. Doris attended school in Spring Grove graduating from High School in 1938. She then attended college at Brenau College in Gainsville, Ga. and then Winona State University graduating in 1942. Doris taught school in Bagley, Minn. for a short time until uniting in marriage with John R. Ri[qr] [qr] ede on June 23, 1943 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, Minn. They lived in Pittsburgh, Penn. until 1944 and then moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico where Doris taught Junior High School. In 1947 they moved to White Bear Lake, Minn. where Doris again taught school at the Junior High level. They lived there for most of their married icon life until 1982 when they moved to Caledonia. On May 20, 1994 John preceded Doris in death after over 50 years of marriage. Doris was a past-president of the Delta-Zeta Sorority and also a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Caledonia where she served on the ladie's organizations.
Survivors include a brother, Oren (Alvina) Ellingson of Spring Grove, Minn.; a sister, Margaret Oneill of Spring Grove, Minn.; five nephews, Charles (Audrey) Ellingson of Caledonia, Thomas Ellingson of Spring Grove, Minn., Mark Ellingson of Lakewood, Colo., Dean (Jennifer) Ellingson of Spring Grove, and James (Andrea) Oneill of Babylon, N.Y. In addition to her husband, Doris was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Gladys.
Funeral services will be Sunday, September 21, at 1 p.m. from Immanuel Lutheran Church, Caledonia. Rev. Rolf T. Storlie will officiate. Burial will follow in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Spring Grove, Minn. Friends may call at the Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at the church on Sunday from 12 noon until the time of the service.

Delia S. Peterson
HOUSTON, Minn. - Delia S. Peterson, 96, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston. Delia S. Britson was born icon March 23, 1902, to Albert and Christine (Traff) Britson, in Looney Valley, Houston County, Minn. Delia attended Upper Looney Valley School prior to working for Watkins in Winona. She then returned to Houston County and married icon Elmore Peterson Jan. 6, 1926. Together they farmed in Houston County until retiring in 1964. Delia was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston and its Ladies Aid.
Delia is survived by two sons, Lyle (Anita) of Houston, and Glenn (Olive) of Canton, Minn.; two daughters, Janice (Burdette) Unnasch, and Dolores (Harold) VanGundy; both of Houston; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, Melvin (Lizzie) Britson of Houston; one sister, Emma Britson of Houston; two sisters-in-law, Harriet Peterson of Winona and Erna Peterson of Houston; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmore; one son, Eugene; two grandchildren, Renee Peterson and Gary VanGundy; five sisters; and three brothers.
Funeral services are planned for today, Nov. 17, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, with Reverend Mark M. Rydberg officiating. Burial will be in the Stone Church Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service today at the church.
Pallbearers will be Delia's grandsons, Douglas Peterson, Travis Peterson, Steven VanGundy, Dennis VanGundy, John Peterson and Kevin Unnasch. The Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel is assisting the family.

Burnell Christian Munkel
SPRING GROVE, Minn. - Burnell Christian Munkel, 87, of Spring Grove and formerly of Caledonia, Minn., died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at Tweeten/Lutheran Health Care Center in Spring Grove.
He was born icon March 26, 1911, in Caledonia, Minn., to Ulrich and Clara (Rask) Munkel. He attended Spring Grove schools. On Jan. 31, 1942, he married icon Anna A. Meyer in Eitzen, Minn. She died March 17, 1986. He was a lifelong Spring Grove-Caledonia area resident. He and his wife farmed in Wilmington township and later, in 1972, when they moved to Caledonia, he worked as a carpenter. He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen, Minn. He was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, Minn. He served on the Wilmington town board as well as the St. Luke's Church Council.
Survivors include one brother, Arnold ``Charlie" Munkel of Spring Grove, Minn.; and three sisters, Alice (Arnold) Myhre and Ruth Diersen, both of Spring Grove, Minn., and Doris (Martin) Bisping of Dorchester, Iowa. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Berdella and Charlotte, and his parents.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen, Minn. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pastor Thomas Laufer will officiate. Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove, Minn., and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
