Deanna L. “Dea” Lieber
Deanna L. “Dea” Lieber, 45, rural Lawrence, Kan., died on Friday evening, July 17, 2009 in Kansas City, Mo.

Edmund J. Krautmann
Edmund J. Krautmann, 85, died Friday July 17, 2009, in Overland Park, Kan.
Edmund was born April 1, 1924, in Bonnots Mill, Mo., to John and Anna (Schmitz) Krautmann. Ed was second youngest of ten children.
His love of animals motivated him in his diligent studies which qualified him to enroll in the first veterinary class at the University of Missouri, Columbia. While finishing his studies, Ed met Mary Joan Poirot, and they were married shortly after graduation in 1950.
Settling into a large and small animal practice in Chillicothe, Mo., Ed and Joan raised five children in town at first, and then on a farm they purchased in 1965. Through camping trips, picnics, long walks in the woods, and many other outdoor experiences, he and Joan instilled a love of nature, science and inquisitiveness in their children. Ed had a dry sense of humor and enjoyed a good play with words in telling his stories.
Ed was a scientist and inventor who took great delight in counseling his farm clients about the merits of proper nutrition for their animals. He searched for the causes of animal disease in order to offer preventative care, not merely being satisfied to treat the immediate symptoms of illness. On many occasions when a farmer could not pay, he would generously offer his services for free or accept farm eggs in barter. He might be overheard to say, "OK, George, we'll just catch it some other time." He knew from his own impoverished upbringing what it meant to make do without the extras; his generosity was a reflection of his faith and gratitude.
After Joan passed in 1982, Ed carried on with the farm and his practice for a few more years. He eventually remarried Rhea Swort Mitchell, sold the Chillicothe farm, and moved to Linn, Mo., where they restored a 19th century log cabin and enjoyed their retirement. Recently they resided at Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kan., nearer their family. Both Ed and Rhea have contributed art in recent years to the "Memories in the Making" benefit auctions for the Alzheimer's Association Heart of America Chapter.
Ed is survived by his wife, Rhea; daughters Melinda and Sharon (Krautmann) Ketter, who live locally; sons Mark, Salem, Ore., Matthew, Kalamazoo Mich., and Paul, Hillsboro, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter "on the way". Ed is also survived by one brother, Ben, Chicago, Ill.
Rosary and visitation will be at 12 p.m. at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Road, Leawood, Kan., on Friday, July 24, 2009. Funeral Mass will follow at 1 p.m. A private burial ceremony will occur with family at a later date in Chillicothe, Mo.
