Alvis Haynes

Alvis Haynes, son of the late William Haynes and Alma Tidwell Haynes, was born on July 14, 1917, at Double Springs, Ala., and died in the Missouri Southern Healthcare at Dexter on Oct. 18, 2002, at the age of 85. Mr. Haynes was of the Baptist faith, a retired farmer and a resident of Dexter. He was united in marriage to Esther Lou winters on Feb. 1, 1939, at Lynn, Ala. Mrs. Haynes survives of the home in Dexter. Other survivors include five sons, James Haynes of Essex, Wayne Haynes and Randy Haynes, both of Dexter, David Haynes of Bernie, and Kenneth Haynes of Sikeston; eleven daughters, Shirley Austin of Tempe, Ariz., Dicie Griggs of Mineral Point, Mary Waltman, Gwendolyn Mills, Kathy Smith, Terrie Lemons, and Christine Haynes, all of Dexter, Jane Auglur of Florissant, Margaret Caldwell of Malden, Theresa Bostic and Patricia Kay Spradling, both of Bloomfield; four brothers, Albert Haynes of Eldridge, Ala., G.C. Haynes of Kokomo, Ind., Norman Haynes and Russell Haynes, both of St. Louis; five sisters, Jackie Sue Harmon of St. Louis, Wanda Kelly of Sikeston, Maureen Haynes, Lois Haynes and Ruth Haynes, all of Houston, Texas; 27 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Paul Haynes and Charles Haynes; three grandchildren; three brothers, Howard Haynes, Earnest Haynes and Billy Haynes. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will then be conducted at 2:00 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in the Rainey-Mathis Chapel with Rev. Bill Pennington officiating. Interment will follow in the Essex Cemetery.

Tony R. Varble

Tony R. Varble, son of the late Ralph and Annetta Williams Varble, was born at Malden on Sept. 23, 1935, and died at the Southeast hospital in Cape Girardeau on Oct. 18, 2002, at the age of 67. Mr. Varble had spent his entire life in the Bloomfield and Leora community and had been a resident of Aquilla for several years. He was a graduate of the Bloomfield High School class of 1953 and was retired from Arvin Automotive in Dexter. On Aug. 17, 1957, he was married to Velva Pry. Survivors include his wife Velva Varble of the home in Aquilla, two daughters and their husbands, Jeanne and Keith Francis of Ozark, Mo., and Debbie and Dennis Avery of Poplar Bluff; one brother, Paul Varble of Arnold; one sister, Betty Koetting of Leora; four grandsons, Dalton and Dylan Avery of Poplar Bluff; and Dustin and Devin Francis of Ozark. Visitation was from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Glenn Ray Epps III officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Ridge Cemetery near Bloomfield.

Jerry Cooper

Jerry Dale Cooper, son of the late Dub and Mary Cooper, was born at Tiptonville, Tenn., on Dec. 19, 1943, and died at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter on Oct. 17, 2002, at the age of 58. Mr. Cooper had been a resident of Dexter the past 25 years and attended the Ark of Hope Church in Dexter. He was a minister and retired dispatcher, safety man and broker for truck lines. On Feb. 1, 1978, he was married to Janis Pugh. Survivors include his wife Janis Cooper of the home in Dexter; two sons, Tim Cooper of Memphis and Mike Cooper of Arlington Heights, Miss.; three step-sons, Lon Watson of Little Rock, Ark., Tony Watson of Alton, Ill., and Scott Arnett of Worden, Ill.; one step-daughter, Renna Weymouth of Cape Girardeau; two sisters, Donna Riggs of Southaven, Miss., and Cheryl Corona of West Memphis, Ark.; one half-sister, Betty Cates of Hawaii; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be held after 10:00 a.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Tim Russell and Rev. David Hardin officiating. Interment will follow in the Lick Creek Cemetery.

Homer Abernathy

Homer Abernathy, son of the late Andrew Jackson Abernathy and Mary Nolan Abernathy, was born on Nov. 4, 1907, at Athens, Ala., and died on Oct. 16, 2002, at the Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter at the age of 94. Mr. Abernathy was the former owner of Abernathy Welding in Dexter, of the Baptist faith, and a resident of Dexter. He was united in marriage to Fern McClain on Oct. 11, 1933, at Newark, Ark., and she survives of the home in Dexter. Other survivors include two sons, Gene Abernathy of Mt. Home, Ark., and Bob Abernathy of Dexter; one sister, Audrey Pitts of Kennett; and two grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in the Rainey-Mathis Chapel with Rev. Wayne Dismuke officiating. Interment will follow in the Hagy Cemetery.

Harley Vails, Sr.

Harley E. Vails, Sr., the son of the late William E. and Virgie A. Mounce Vails, was born in Holcomb on May 7, 1915, and died at the Cypress Point Health Care in Dexter on Oct. 17, 2002, at the age of 87. Mr. Vails had lived in Essex for many years where he farmed. He lived in Dexter for the past 16 years. Mr. Vails loved to fish and hunt. He attended the Vinson General Baptist church near Essex. On Feb. 24, 1940, he was married to Anna Laura Cox in Catron. Surviving are his wife Anna Vails of Dexter; three sons, Darrell Vails of Jackson, Tenn., Junior Vails of Dexter, and Michael Vails of Essex; five daughters, Peggy Rehkop of St. Charles, Shirley Blair of Columbia, B.J. Vails of Cape Girardeau, Kimberly Neppl of Naperville, Ill., and Sheila Vails of Dexter; four brothers, George Vails of Puxico, Charles Vails of Dexter, Frank Vails of Campbell, and Roy Vails of Ocala, Fla.; five sisters, Armada Valentine and Gerline Gregory, both of Dexter, Ulah Owens of Bernie, Lola Thomas of Stuarts Draft, Va., and Nadine Donalson of Rockford, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Lester and Joyce Arnold. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Doyle Corlew of Dexter officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

Mitchell McLard

Mitchell McLard, the son of the late Franklin Earl and Rubie Lucille Tankersley McLard, was born in Poplar Bluff on Sept. 11, 1946, and died at his home in Sikeston on Oct. 15, 2002, at the age of 56. Mr. McLard had lived in Bennington, Neb., for the past 16 years and moved to Sikeston in April, 2002. He was a retired mileage data engineer with the railroad. On Oct. 14, 1967, he was married to Carol Cossey in Dexter. Surviving are his wife, Carol McLard of Sikeston; one daughter, Kelly Rodriguez of Fremont, Neb.; one son, Gregory McLard of Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren; four sisters, Elizabeth Burns and Pat Miller, both of Dexter, Frances McLard of Dudley, Ruth Worley of Cape Girardeau; two brothers, Michael McLard of Chaffee, and Ed McLard of Dexter. He was preceded in death by one brother, J.R. McLard. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. today, Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with the Rev. Jimmie Vent of Morehouse and the Rev. Billy Anders of Chaffee officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Cemetery near Bloomfield with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of all arrangements.

Gary Tennyson

Gary Tennyson, the son of William Tennyson and Jayan Van Bergen, was born in Santa Rosa, Calif., on April 14, 1964, and died at the Three Rivers Healthcare North Campus in Poplar Bluff on Oct. 15, 2002, at the age of 38. Mr. Tennyson had lived in California for several years and had lived in Puxico the past nine years. He was employed at the Stoddard County Sheltered Workshop in Dexter. Surviving are his parents Jayan Van Bergen of St. Louis and William Tennyson of Petaluma, Calif.; grandparents, Jay and Helen Hobbs of Puxico; one sister, Teresa Bird of Rohnert Park, Calif.; one brother, Robert Tennyson of Pioneer, Calif.; three step-brothers, Mark, Bobby, and Scott Dietlin, all of California. Visitation will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in the Hobbs Chapel Church near Puxico with the Rev. Kim Proffer of Poplar Bluff officiating and the Rev. Wiley McGhee of Puxico assisting. Interment will follow in the Hobbs Chapel Cemetery near Puxico with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

Bill Aslin

Bill Aslin, son of the late Dave Aslin and Minnie Harper Aslin, was born June 16, 1922, at rural Dexter, and died in the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Dexter on Oct. 14, 2002, at the age of 80. Mr. Aslin was of the Baptist faith, a former line worker for Ozark Dairy in Dexter, and a resident of Dexter. He was united in marriage to Mildred Launius on May 27, 1944, at Bloomfield, and she survives of the home in Dexter. Other survivors include one daughter, Kathy Tinker of Grover City, Calif.; one brother, Rube Aslin of the state of Washington; three sisters, Leah Wilson of the state of Washington, Marion Moody of Sikeston, and Marjorie Ann Hopkins of Alton, Ill.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Dale Aslin; two brothers, Clifton Aslin and Ray Aslin; two sisters, Sylvia Page and Ruth Stone. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002. Funeral services will then be conducted at 2:00 p.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Calvin Buhler officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Cemetery near Bloomfield.

Bill Howard

Bill Howard, son the Charles Oscar and Jessie Falsom Odum Howard, was born on March 11, 1929, in Marion, Ill., and died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at the Lutheran Home. Mr. Howard was a maintenance worker 25 years at General Motors in St. Louis, retiring in 1980. He moved to Cape Girardeau in 1998 and was a member of River City Workers of the Blind and Westside Senior Citizens. He served in the U.S. Army from Dec. 12, 1950, to Sept. 12, 1952. He received the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Camp Star, United Nations Service Medal, and an overseas bar. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Jane Hance of Belle, Michelle Hendrix of Sturdivant, Shirley Luczak of Wentzville, and Marilyn Koeppel of Columbia; one stepson, Mike Meyer of Cape Girardeau; two brothers, Charles and Jack Howard of Warsaw; four sisters, Dana Irwin of Perkins, Bonnie Lennington of Jackson, Virginia Osborne of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ella Brewer of Marion; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister, a granddaughter, and a great-grandchild. Visitation was held from noon to 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Ford and Sons Mp Mount Auburn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at the funeral home with the Rev. Keith Price officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery at Advance.
