Ransom (Randy) W. Dudley, Jr.

Ransom W. Dudley, Jr. of Sullivan passed away Saturday, July 19, 2003 at the age of 39 years.

Randy as he was known by family and friends was born August 6, 1963 to Ransom W. Dudley, Sr. and Carolyn (Ellis) Dudley at Fulton Missouri. Randy attended school in Fulton, to the fourth grade. The Dudley family then moved to Sullivan where he attended and graduated class of 1982. After high school Randy attended East Central College. He then joined the United States Marine Corp as a reservist and began attending Missouri University in Columbia earning a Bachelors degree in history. He then resumed his military career in the United States Army and retired from active duty on July 18, 2003 at the rank of Captain. On July 8, 1991 Randy was united in marriage to Alisa Sappington and two children were born to their marriage; Chandler and Ransom W. Dudley, III. Randy enjoyed military life and also spending time with his family and buddies, watching football and fishing. He was also known for his love of history and he thoroughly enjoyed a good political debate. He had recently been attending Peace Lutheran Church in Sullivan. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Alisa Dudley of Sullivan, two children, Chandler and Ransom W. Dudley III, of the family home, his parents, Ransom W. Dudley, Sr. and wife, Carolyn, one brother, Clifton Dudley and wife, Vivian, one sister, Cindy Carey and husband, Randy, parents in law, Bob and Terri Sappington all of Sullivan, other relatives and many friends.

Memorial services were conducted 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003 from Peace Lutheran Church in Sullivan with Pastor Tom Wehrman officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may to given to the M. D. Anderson Sarcoma Center in memory of Ransom W. Dudley, Jr. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Claud D. Davis

Claud Davis of Dundee, Illinois formerly of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Saturday, July 19, 2003 at the age of 90 years.

Claud was born February 18, 1913 to Delbert and Martha (Clayborn) Davis at Gamaliel, Arkansas. Claud was raised on the family farm in Arkansas and continued living and working there for several years. He later relocated to West Plains, Missouri where he managed the Farmers Exchange and ran a grocery store. In 1934 he was married to Freda M. Gilliam at West Plains. One son, Neal Davis was born to their marriage. Claud and Freda remained in West Plains until October 1951. The Davis family relocated to Sullivan where they owned and operated Davis Shoe Store for 25 years. While living in Sullivan, Claud was a member of Oddfellows Lodge No. 156 where he was Past Noble Grand. Claud and Freda became members of Temple Baptist Church shortly after moving here. He was faithful to his church and was very involved in many different areas of church work. He served as Sunday school teacher and later as Sunday school superintendent. He also served as Deacon for many years and was named the first Deacon Emeritus. He served on several advisory boards including the Missouri Baptist Foundational Board and the Board of MoArk Baptist College while living in Missouri. In his free time Claud enjoyed traveling with his wife, son and family and had been to all 50 states and many foreign countries. Claud was an avid trout fisherman and also enjoyed gardening with his wife. In 1998 he moved from Sullivan to live with his son Neal and daughter-in-law Pat and had remained with or near them in Michigan and Illinois until his passing.

Mr. Davis is survived by one son, Neal Davis and wife, Pat of East Dundee, Illinois, one brother, Guthrie Davis of London Mills, Illinois, six grandchildren, Cathy Dennis and husband, Joe, Mike, Mark, Carol, Connie and Mitch Davis, two great-grandchildren, Isaac and Mali Dennis, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Freda on August 6, 1991 and three brothers, Currin, George, and Henry Davis.

Funeral services were conducted 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment and graveside services were held in New Hope Cemetery, Peace Valley, Missouri. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Temple Baptist Church in memory of Claud Davis. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Betty Ann Butts

Betty Ann Butts of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at the age of 55 years.

Betty was born at Sullivan, Missouri on November 27, 1947 to Robert and Betty Hudson. On May 6, 1967 she was married to Leonard Butts in Sullivan and to this marriage three children were born of which an infant daughter, Sherry Lynn preceded her in death. The family made its home in St. Louis and later Rolla for a time and in 1985 returned to Sullivan. Betty was trained and educated as a medical assistant of which she was employed for a time. She worked for a time at Meramec Caverns but her main interest was taking care of the family children in her home. She loved children and always wore a smile on her face. Betty was known as a person who never met a stranger who loved to celebrate any occasion and she found great pleasure decorating for holidays. Betty was a faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan and had taught Sunday school and worked in the nursery and was on the kitchen committee.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard of the family home, two daughters, Lynn Michelle Bockover and husband John of Holden, Missouri, Jennifer Lynn Glaser and husband Tommy of Sullivan, her parents, Bob and Betty Hudson of Sullivan, a sister, Robin Sohn and husband Roger of Sullivan, three grandchildren, Alivia Lynn Glaser, Grace Mae Glaser, and Jaren Oz Bockover, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her infant daughter, Betty was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Terry.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2003 from Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan with Pastor Bart Hildreth officiating. Interment was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Larry Hopwood

Larry E. Hopwood of Bourbon, Missouri passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2003 at the age of 50 years.

Larry was born April 29, 1953 At Bourbon, Missouri to the late Herbert and Virginia Shelton Hopwood. He was a life-long resident of the Bourbon area and was a 1971 graduate of Bourbon High School. Larry lived for his grandchildren and was known for his humor and happy nature. He found pleasure in hunting and fishing and was never a selfish man. He always helped those in need and never complained even in ill health. On February 7, 1986 he was married to Renee Branaugh and for the past 12 years have made their home near Leasburg. Larry was an active member of the Sullivan Masonic Lodge No. 69 AF&AM; and the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 105.

He is survived by his wife Renee of the family home, five children, Michelle Haught and husband Jerry of Vine Grove, Kentucky, Melynda Aden and husband Bill of Bourbon, Melissa Hopwood of Bourbon, Joyce Protte and husband Kevin of Bourbon, and Terry Stonewall Johnson also of Bourbon, one sister, Linda Wright and husband Frank of Owensville, Missouri, three brothers, Bill Hopwood and wife Cynthia, Raymond Hopwood and Mike Hopwood all of Brazoria, Texas, sisters-in-law, Stephanie Protte and husband, Gary of Bourbon, Sheila Barnes and husband, Kenneth of Bullard, Texas, Cathy Adams and husband, Rodney of Potosi, Missouri and Billye Villmer and husband, Jeff of Richwoods, Missouri. Larry is also survived by his father-in-law, Bill Branaugh of Potosi, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Dean Luhring.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2003 from the Eaton Funeral Chapel in Bourbon with Pastor Leo Roberson officiating. Interment was in Delhi Cemetery rural route Cuba, Missouri. Active pallbearers were his Masonic brothers, Jerry Askren, Bob Martin, Steve Lynn, John Vieman, Ray Wise and Gene Hopwood. An honorary pallbearer was from the Sullivan Chapter of the Eastern Star, JoAnn Lynn.

Theodore Patrick “Pat” Teeter

Theodore Patrick “Pat” Teeter of Sullivan, passed away at his home on Monday, June 23, 2003 at the age of 80 years.

Pat, as he was known by his family and friends, was born November 20, 1922 at North Liberty, Iowa to Frank G. and Bertha (Maxey) Teeter. He made his home in Iowa until coming to Missouri in 1936. On December 15, 1941 he was married to Hazel Richards at Union, Missouri and to this marriage three children were born. Pat honorably served his country during W.W.II with the U.S. Army. He saw action and was involved in the battle campaigns of Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Pat was awarded three Bronze Stars for these campaigns. After his return home from the service he started an electrical motor repair business and turned it into one of the oldest businesses in Sullivan under a sole proprietorship. Pat was an avid pilot and flight instructor. Flying was his life and he routinely flew as a hobby and also for the Conservation Department on fire patrol. He was airport manager for many years and was Commander of the C.A.P. Squadron for a time.

He is survived by his wife Hazel of the family home, one son, Ted Teeter and wife Mary of Sullivan, two daughters, Wilma Scott and husband Robert and Vivian Whalen and husband Jerry all of Sullivan, a daughter-in-law Anna Teeter of Sullivan, two brothers, William Teeter of Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania and Roy Teeter of Quapaw, Oklahoma, three sisters, Evelyn Bragg of the state of Oklahoma, Dorothy Randleman of Fenton, Missouri and Elsie Halmick of Washington, Missouri, 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 26, 2003 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Mr. James Eaton officiating. Interment was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or BJC Hospice.

Geneva M. Umfleet

Geneva M. Umfleet of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2003 at the age of 83 years.

Mrs. Umfleet was born on March 24, 1920 at Ironton, Missouri to Ernest and Grace (Throckmorton) Stricklin. She was raised in Ironton and was later married to Clyde Umfleet in Fredericktown, Missouri on September 30, 1939. She was employed for a time at the former Brown Shoe Company in Fredericktown and later at Belmont Furniture Store in St. Clair as the office manager. After she and Clyde moved to Sullivan, Geneva became employed at a dispatcher and secretary at the Sullivan Police Department. She was a member of the Fredericktown Chapter of Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years and was also a Past Worthy Matron. Geneva was a member of the Sullivan Christian Church and was known as a great cook for her family and loved the company of her grandchildren. She was very family orientated and found pleasure in reading and flower gardening.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Emerson Roberts of Sullivan, five grandchildren, Lisa Almany, Tina Cantwell, Skip Massey, Bradley Massey and Suzy Bogert, 9 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Geneva was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Taylor.

A memorial service was held at 8:00 p.m., Tuesday June 24, 2003 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Don Umfleet officiating. Her cremains were placed in the Masonic Cemetery, Fredericktown, Missouri.

Kurt William Helton

Kurt William Helton of St. Louis, Missouri formerly of Sullivan, passed away Friday, June 20, 2003 at the age of 32 years.

Kurt was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 30, 1970 to the late Mitchell C. and Mary Lorene (Weiskopf) Helton, Jr. Kurt’s family lived in the St. Louis area until his high school years. They then moved to Sullivan where he attended and graduated from Sullivan High School class of 1988. He later attended Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois earning a Bachelors Degree. Kurt was a history buff and enjoyed researching family genealogy. He was especially interested in his Native American Ancestors. He was employed by the Sullivan school district as a substitute teacher until ill health forced his retirement. Kurt loved children and enjoyed spending time with his nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He served as assistant basketball coach and could always be found cheering his team on. For the past three years, Kurt made his home in the St. Louis area to be close to his brother and sisters. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Arie #3781 of Sullivan and Saint Anthony Catholic Church.

Audrey Miller

Audrey A. Miller of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at the age of 86 years.

Mrs. Miller was born on April 16, 1917 at St. Clair, Missouri to Oscar and Alice (Booth) Peacock. She was raised in St. Clair where she later graduated high school. On January 18, 1940 she was married to Harry Miller at Union, Missouri. In 1951 they made their home in Sullivan where for a time she was employed at the former PACO plant. Audrey was also a housekeeper for a local family and cook at the hospital. She was known as a quiet person who enjoyed quilting and crocheting, fishing and camping and playing pinochle. She also found pleasure in the company of her grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Gene Miller and wife, Marilyn of Blackfoot, Idaho, Ernie Dazey and wife Betty of Sullivan, eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2003 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Charles Idleman officiating. Interment was in Buffalo Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri.

Max Noblin

Max A. Noblin of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at Price Memorial Home in Eureka, Missouri on Sunday, June 15, 2003 at the age of 88 years.

Mr. Noblin was born on December 25, 1914 in Dent County near Salem, Missouri to James H. and Lilly Mae (Gamblin) Noblin. He was raised on Mint Spring farm near the Meramec River and was later baptized in the Meramec in 1926. In 1934 he married Mildred Beezley of Cook Station, Missouri and to this union two children were born. Max spent the early part of marriage apprenticing as a carpenter and stone mason around Salem. In 1940, after building a home from locally found stone for his parents, he moved with his family to St. Louis. He drove a bus for St. Louis Public Service from 1942 through 1950. In 1944 was married to May Jane Holt and to this marriage a child was adopted. Max became a carpenter with Fred Weber Construction in 1952, joining Local #5 of the Carpenters Union. His first major project was the Goodfellow Bridge over I-70. In 1963, he moved from St. Louis, purchasing a farm and built a new home near Salem, Missouri. While residing there, Max was on the crew that built the hospital and nurses quarters at Ft. Leonard Wood and then on to constructing the buildings and factory at the Buick Lead Mines. Max returned to work for Fred Weber upon moving to Sullivan in 1971. He was a carpenter and foreman over work on the bridges and culverts between Sullivan and the twin bridges over the Bourbeuse River. During this period he also directed work on the bridge at Beaufort, Missouri over the Bourbeuse on highway 185. Due to illness, Max retired in 1976 after moving near Sullivan to the Guin Farm where he resided until 1987. In 1991, he moved to the Sullivan Homes where he enjoyed the friendship of the families and officers residing there, as well as many close friends in Sullivan, including his best friend, Ann Benson.

He is survived by a son, Doyle F. Noblin of St. Peters, Missouri, two daughters, Donna Davis of St. Louis and Linda Iler of Salem, Missouri, one sister, Maxine Biggs of Goodyear, Arizona, 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Two brothers, Ed and Maurice Noblin preceded Max in death.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 from the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Jeff Bent officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery.
