William J. Truemper

William J. Truemper, Sr.of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Saturday, March 08, 2003 at the age of 88 years.

Mr. Truemper was born September 10, 1914 near Dutzow, Missouri to Martin and Katie (Wibberg) Truemper. He was known as a fun-loving individual who enjoyed dancing and fishing. He found special pleasure in gardening and grew both vegetables and flowers. Mr. Truemper was employed as a plumbers laborer in the construction trade and was a member of the Laborers Local No. 110 of St. Louis.

He is survived by a son, William Trumper, Jr. and wife Joan of St. Clair, Missouri, one daughter, Patricia Fielder and husband Darrell of St. Charles, Missouri, 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren other relatives and friends. Mr. Truemper was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Olson and by two sisters.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 10, 2003 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery.

Joyce Walker

Joyce M. Walker of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at her home on Thursday, March 6, 2003 at the age of 68 years.

Joyce was born on April 6, 1934 in Frazee, Minnesota to the Harold and Katherine (Voss) Isenhower. She was raised in Missouri and had lived the majority of her life in the Sullivan area. Joyce was a Licensed Practical Nurse and was employed by various nursing homes and hospitals in St. Louis that included Deaconess and Barnes. Missouri Baptist Hospital of Sullivan and Life Care Nursing Center also employed her. She was known as a person, who would think of others before herself and was unselfish, caring and had a servant attitude. Joyce also loved animals and watching football, especially Notre Dame and the St. Louis Rams. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church of Sullivan and was an active quilter in the sew-n-sew club at the church.

She is survived by a son Ken Walker and wife Hope of House Springs, Missouri, two sisters, June Steed of Wentzville, Missouri and Nettie Studdard of Sullivan, one grandson, Clint Walker other relatives and many friends. Along with her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by a brother Harold Isenhower and one sister, Katherine Riley.

Funeral services were conducted at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2003 from St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Sullivan. Burial was private. Visitation from Mrs. Joyce Walker was held from 4:30 until time on service at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Memorial contributions are preferred to St. Matthews Lutheran Church. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Norman L. Andersen

Norman L. Andersen of Gerald, Missouri passed away at the Frene Valley Health Center in Owensville, Missouri on Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at the age of 70 years.

Mr. Andersen was born at Atlanta, Iowa on June 1, 1933 to Jess and Emma (Strickland) Andersen. He was raised in that area and farmed near Cedar Rapids. In 1981 he came to Missouri and farmed on the side when driving a shuttle bus for Des Peres Hospital. On March 23, 1984 he was married to Joyce Gillman in St. Louis. Norman was fond of tractors, especially John Deere tractors and memorabilia. He was also a member of the St. Louis Central Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He is survived by his wife Joyce of the family home, a son Terry Andersen of Lynchburg, Virginia, a daughter, Becky Andersen of Columbia, South Carolina, a step-son Keith Moore of Detroit, Michigan, and a step-daughter, Tina Pouliot of Detroit, Michigan, four brothers, Dale Andersen of Independence, Iowa, Don Andersen of Atlantic, Iowa, Lyle Andersen of Waterloo, Iowa, and Marlin Andersen of St. Louis, Missouri, one sister, Nedra Bergman of Grand Junction, Colorado, four grandchildren, Megan and Nichole Irby, Tiffany and Jordan Andersen, two step-grandchildren, Kayla and Kristen Moore, other relatives and friends.

Memorial funeral services were conducted at 7:00 p.m., Monday evening, June 9, 2003 at the St. Louis Central Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Dean Corridan officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Nila L. Hensley

Nila L. Hensley of Bourbon passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at the age of 60 years.

Nila was born October 6, 1942 to the late Joe and Irene (Sirtier) Pangburn at University City, Missouri. She grew up and attended school there and on August 7, 1958 was married to Churchill F. Hensley. Nila and Churchill had lived in many places but for the past two years had made their home in Bourbon. Nila enjoyed her cats and dogs but her greatest love was for her family. She was described as a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Hensley was saved in the Assembly of God Church and was faithful to her Lord always.

She is survived by her husband, Churchill F. Hensley, I, of Bourbon, one son, Churchill F. Hensley, II and wife, Cindy of Mapleton, North Dakota, two daughters, June Collins of Sullivan, and Julie Lansford of Park Hills, Missouri, two brothers, Donald Pangburn of Bourbon and Bruce Pangburn of Robertsville, two sisters, Irene Cassmeyer of Bellflower, Missouri and Rose Cozart of Hazelwood, seven grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Nila was preceded in death by one grandson, Luke Lansford.

Funeral services were conducted 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003 from the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Norman Porter officiating. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery, Hartshorn, Missouri. All arrangements were under the care of the Hassebroek Funeral Home.

John D. Lafferty

John D. Lafferty, Sr. of Leasburg, Missouri was born at Prospect Hill, St. Louis, Missouri to John Thomas Lafferty and Pauline May Avery on September 5, 1920. He went to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at the age of 82 years.

John was married to Lucy Katherine Strand on July 26, 1946 in Corning, Arkansas, and had eleven children of this union.

John was a World War II veteran serving with the U.S. Navy. He worked as a tool maker for McDonald Douglas, retiring in 1982. John enjoyed fishing and wood crafts, building each of his children a small Grandfather Clock. He enjoyed taking care of his four birds, two horses, and three dogs.

John accepted the Lord into his life in 1983 on his 40th Wedding Anniversary. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Cherlyn Denise, his sons: Jeffrey Paul, Daniel Gordon, Kenneth Alan, and Kelly Glen Lafferty.

Those who remain to morn his passing are his wife of 57 years, Lucy, his sons John David Lafferty, Jr. and wife Jean of Cuba, MO, son Dennis Wayne Lafferty and wife Jackie of Spearfish, SD, daughter Susan Kae Blum of Haysville, KS, son Tracy Dwain Lafferty of Wichita, KS, son Shawn Timothy Lafferty of Fredericktown, MO, son Michael Patrick Lafferty and wife Tina of Gray Summit, MO, two sisters, Jessie Dell of Hillsboro, MO and Lynn Ayers of St. Louis, MO, eight Grandsons, two Granddaughters, 3 great-granddaughters and 1 great-grandson, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation for Mr. John Lafferty, Sr. was held on Sunday, June 1, 2003, from 4:30 until 9 p.m. at the Eaton Chapel in Bourbon, MO. Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel on Monday, June 2, with full Military Honors performed by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army at Lea Cemetery, Leasburg, MO.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, MO.

Fred Snell, Jr.

Fred L. Snell, Jr. of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Saturday, May 24, 2003 at the age of 78 years.

Mr. Snell was born on June 22, 1924 at Topeka, Kansas to Fred L. and Selma (Stanstrom) Snell, Sr. He was raised in St. Louis, Missouri and later in the St. James area. He graduated high school at St. James and then came to Sullivan. Fred operated the White Swan Restaurant, and later Sullivan Bowl. He was best known however as the owner and operator of Snell Gas Propane Company and as a petroleum jobber. Fred honorably served his country during WWII with the Merchant Marines. On October 10, 1944 he was married to Edna Inez (Smokie) Lamb at San Francisco, California. Fred was a member of Sullivan Lodge No. 69 A.F.&A.M.;

He is survived by one son, Fred L. Snell, III and wife, Patricia of Houston, Texas, four daughters, Sandra Snell of University City, Missouri, Sue Dean of St. Louis, Marlene Robinson and husband, Wayne of Springfield, Missouri, Christine Stroup of Sullivan, one step-brother, Lowell Harmon of Cuba, one sister, Gen Leonard of St. Louis, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, his wife “Smokie” preceded Fred in death in 1987.

Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003 from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Jeff Bent officiating. Interment was in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society in memory of Fred Snell, Jr.

Virginia R. Whipple

Virginia R. Whipple of Sullivan passed away Thursday, May 22, 2003 at the age of 67 years.

Midge as she was known by her family was born on September 27, 1935 to the late Harold and Ruth (Walker) Carlson at Detroit, Michigan. She grew up and graduated from high school in the Detroit area. On September 5, 1954 she was married to Clyde R. Whipple at Birmingham, Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Whipple moved to the Sullivan area thirteen years ago and started what is known as Whip Haven Farm. From then until now, she has been known as the Strawberry Lady. Midge was described by her family as a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was the glue that held the family together. When asked what she raised at Whip Haven she would reply, “Strawberries and grandchildren”. The only thing she loved more than family was her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde Whipple of Sullivan, two sons, Keith Whipple and wife, Wendy of Japan, Kevin Whipple and wife, Stephanie of Sullivan, one daughter, Alicia Ruff and husband, Robert of Japan, twenty grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Graveside funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003 from Argo Cemetery, Bourbon, Missouri with Pastor Noah Allen officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may to given to Relay for Life in memory of Virginia Whipple. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home.

Selma Center

Selma M. Center of Sullivan passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at the age of 84 years.

Selma was born on March 27, 1919 at Stanton, Missouri to the late Allen and Clara (Door) Woodcock. On March 20, 1943 she was united in marriage to Rolla F. Center at Leslie, Missouri. Three children were born to their marriage. Selma was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, canning and sewing. She often made clothing for her grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Visits from grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant more to her than anything. Selma also had a special friend and caregiver, Peggy Grimm who lovingly cared for both Rolla and Selma.

She is survived by two sons, Gene Center and wife, Mary Ann, Jack Center and wife, Janice all of Sullivan, one daughter, Joyce Ritchey and husband, Ron of Rolla, Missouri, one sister, Violet Brown of Sullivan, nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Selma was preceded in death by her husband, Rolla Center on July 1, 2002, five brothers, Lilburn, Floyd, Clyde, Vernon and Harold Woodcock, and one sister, Sophia Bandy.

Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2003 from Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating. Interment was in Stanton Cemetery. All arrangements were under the care of the Hassebroek Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials made be given to Temple Baptist Church or Missouri Baptist Hospice in memory of Selma Center.

Marietta Howk

Marietta Howk of Sullivan was baptized into the hope of Christ’s Resurrection on Saturday, May 10, 2003 at the age of 80 years.

Marietta was born on February 24, 1923 to the late Edward and Effie (Houston) Hulsey at Steelville, Missouri. She attended and graduated from Sullivan High School. For many years Marietta participated in the planning of many class reunions. On January 18, 1947 she was married to Ralph Wilcox. Two sons were born to their marriage Lynn and Dana Wilcox. For ten years Ralph and Marietta owned and operated the Variety Five and Dime. Mr. Wilcox preceded her in death in 1976. Marietta was then employed by the former Stuckey’s in Stanton and later by the former Sullivan Community Hospital, sterilizing instruments. In 1979 Marietta was married to Arthur Howk. They enjoyed twenty-four years together. Marietta and Art were very active in the Lion’s Club. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, flower gardening, canning and making jellies. She was a member of the Thalians Club and Saint Anthony Catholic Church of Sullivan.

She is survived by her husband, Art Howk of Sullivan, one son, Dana Wilcox and wife, Sharon of Florissant, Missouri two step-sons, Arthur Paul Howk and wife, Nancy of Red Bud, Illinois, Raymond Howk of St. Louis, seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and first husband, Mrs. Howk was preceded in death by one son, Lynn Wilcox in 1973.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2003 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan with Father Ted Brunnert officiating. Interment was in St. Anthony Cemetery. Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home.
