Benjamin "Benny" Locke
(December 14, 1953 - March 21, 2016)
Graveside services for “Benny” Benjamin Charles Locke, 62, of Winona, MS who died Monday, March 21, 2016, at Greenwood Hospital will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 in Kilmichael cemetery with Rev Dan. Beardain officiating.
Visitation will be Monday, March 28, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lee Funeral Home in Winona, MS.
Benny was born icon in Denham Springs, Louisiana, on December 14, 1953, the son of Lawrence Locke and Nell Murphy Locke both of Kilmichael, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Sidney Locke, and his grandparents Charles and Myrtle Murphy and Benjamin and Artie Locke all of Kilmichael.
Benny was a one of a kind individual with a close attachment to the great outdoors - a person who answered the voice of nature from childhood through all his life. He had been a member of Ducks Unlimited and the Winona Bass Club enjoying many hunts and fishing trips with members of the Pearson, Tompkins, Hunger, Vail, Diette, Johnson, Hovas and Murphy families, just to name a few. As one relative remembered, Benny was a “complete outdoorsman” who would prepare game using his own garden and produced memorable, holiday feasts and other occasions throughout the year.
In his early twenties, Benny worked offshore in the Gulf of Mexico as roust about, drilling floorman and later as an operator before returning home as the result of an accident. He spent the next twenty years as a transmission repairman with Barton’s transmission. He had a love of race cars which was more than shared by shop owner, Maze Barton, who had been a professional racer as a young man and in the final business years, sponsored a successful car which Benny, William Ramage, Todd Skelton and others formed a loose team for. Benny was a close friend with Tip Vail and his son Bill. A boyhood friend with Locke Sr, Tip had sponsored a race team from his shop in the 70’s and adopted Barton’s as his retirement spot. Their humor and take on life was a real life comedy.
Second only to fishing and hunting, the race trips and weekend time with cars were among the memorable years of Benny’s life. These were all sportsmen who many are also missed today and shared a deep bond that surrounded their sports. A special thank you is extended to Bill Vail and others for their kindness and friendship. Several weeks ago Benny commented how he missed his visits to “The Café” and breakfast time most of all.
Survivors include cousins, Charles Murphy of Winona, Pat Murphy and Mike Murphy of Memphis, Carol Murphy of Albuquerque NM, Tim Hovas of Greenville, Sandra Hovas Bass of Ocean Springs, and Tim Chesteen of Natchez.
Benny will not be forgotten by any who knew him and certainly missed by those close in his life.
