James Carroll Johnson
(June 10, 1910 - April 24, 2015)

James Carroll Johnson, 104, died Friday, April 24, at Winona Manor Nursing Home in Winona.

born in Lambert on June 10, 1910, to the late John Carroll and Floy Hudgens Johnson, Carroll attended Northwest Mississippi Junior College in Senatobia upon completing high school, where he excelled in sports.

Carroll was one of the first inductees into the Sports Hall of Fame at NWMCC where it was said he was one of the most gifted athletes in all sports who came out of Lambert, lettering in multiple sports during his college career.

Carroll continued his education at Southwestern, now known as Rhodes College.

Upon entering the U.S. Navy during World War II, he served as a Sonar Technician aboard the destroyer USS Wasatch, and was aboard and present on the USS Missouri when the Japanese Imperial Forces signed the surrender agreement to end the "War to end all wars".

Upon returning, Carroll worked as an assistant superintendent with Federal Compress in both Belzoni and Monroe, LA.

He retired, making his home in Winona, where he was a member of the American Legion Post, a member of and Deacon at First Baptist Church, and faithful member of Aubrey Boone's Adult Men's Sunday School Class as long as he was physically able to attend.

Carroll is survived by his daughter, Dixie Johnson Alexander and husband, Dr. Lewis Alexander, of Gulfport; a favorite niece, Phoebe George Holland (Bill) of Winona; four grandchildren, Lewis Edward Alexander Jr., Lisa Alexander Shows, Lynne Louise Alexander, Jill Alexander Kavanagh (Dr. Joel); seven great grandchildren, Lewis Edward Alexander III, Hayley Brooke Alexander, Jeffrey Miles Alexander, Sarah Fowler, Sophie Shows, Jack Douglas Shows Jr., and Alexa Shows; and a dear and faithful friend, Mr. Bob Brockman of Winona.

In addition to his parents, Carroll was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Driskell Johnson; a daughter, Georgey Carol Johnson; a grandson, Dr. James Jeffrey Alexander; and brothers, John William Johnson and Walter Ray Johnson.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 25, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Lee Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at First Baptist Church in Winona on Sunday, April 26, at 3:00 p.m., with burial following in the Oakwood cemetery in Winona.

Dr. Timothy W. Mims will officiate the services.

Pallbearers will be Bill Holland, Greg James, Devin Loftin, David Hodges, John Wayne VanHorn, Jack Shows, Billy Chesteen, and Lance VanHorn. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Aubrey Boone's Men's Sunday School Class.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Winona or Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia.

Nellie Mann Downs
(July 10, 1925 - September 26, 2014)

Funeral services for Nellie Mann Downs of Carrollton will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, in the Lee Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in Poplar Springs Baptist Church cemetery near Carrollton.

Rev. Duane Jensen will officiate the services.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 27, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., at Lee Funeral Home; and Sunday, September 28, from noon until service time, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Downs, 89, died of heart failure at Vaiden Community Living Center in Vaiden on Friday, September 26.

She was a homemaker and a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.

She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Downs; her father, Thomas Mann; her mother and stepfather, Lillie E. Blount Mann Kershaw and Ernest P. Kershaw; three sisters; and two brothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Downs Tullos and her husband, Jimmy, of Grenada and Kathy Downs Herbert and her husband, Terry, of Carrollton; three sons, John W. "Pete" Downs Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Grenada; Rayburn Downs and his wife, Sharon, of Richland, MO; and Harmon Downs and his wife, Shirley, of Carrollton; ten grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be John William Downs IV, James Aaron Hooks, Joseph William Downs, Jimmy Reed Tullos Jr., Timothy Neil Tullos, and Gene Leflore Bidwell III.

Honorary pallbearers will be Joe L. Downs Jr., Henry F. "Buck" Downs, Daniel "Dan" Downs, and Robert E. "Bob" Downs.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or to Poplar Springs Baptist Church.

Jackie Bond
(May 16, 1948 - January 13, 2016)

Funeral services for Mrs. Jackie Bond of Hernando will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, in the Lee Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in Milligan Springs cemetery near Kilmichael.

Dr. Gerald Hodges will officiate the services.

Visitation will be Sunday at Lee Funeral Home, from 1:00 p.m. until service time.

Mrs. Bond, 67, died at Baptist Memorial Hospital Desoto in Southaven on Wednesday, January 13. She was born icon in Eupora on May 16, 1948, to Otto and Annie Lane Tierce.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, gardening, crafts, and working with stained glass. She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandchild, Chance Hodges; a sister, Martha Jo Mitchell; and a brother, Lynn Tierce.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Jerry Bond of Hernando; daughter, Stacey Bond Hodges (Stephen) of Hernando; son, Cliff Bond (Martha) of Prescott, AZ; and a brother, Fred Tierce (Pat) of Stewart.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Special Spaces, 9028 Middlebrook Pike, Knoxville, TN 37923.

J. D. Nester Jr.
(October 12, 1928 - April 24, 2015)

Funeral services for J. D. Nester Jr. of Carrollton will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, at Providence Baptist Church near Carrollton, with burial following in New Jerusalem Baptist Church cemetery in Carroll County.

Rev. David Haggerty, Rev. Eddie Carpenter, and Dr. Duran Palmertee will officiate the services.

Visitation will be Monday, April 27, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., at Lee Funeral Home; and on Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. until service time, at the church.
Mr. Nester, 86, died of cancer at his daughter's home near Kilmichael on Friday, April 24.

He was born icon in Meridian on October 12, 1928, to the late John Deryl and Virgie Blackmon Nester.

Mr. Nester was a loving and devoted husband to his late wife, Helen Turner Nester, who passed away earlier this month.

He was retired from the U.S. Army and was a faithful member and deacon of Providence Baptist Church near Carrollton. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and camping, and was known as the "Flower Man from Carrollton".

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Randall Wayne Nester; daughter, Paula Nester; and brothers, Robert Nester, Tom Nester, Richard Nester, LaVurn "Pete" Nester, and Earl "Sonny" Nester.

Mr. Nester is survived by his daughters, Rhonda N. Williams (Terry) of Kilmichael, Susan Nester (Robert) of Brandon; son, James D. Nester (Mary Gail) of Carrollton; sisters, Norma Beckwith (John) of North Carrollton, Murl Chriss of Rock Hill, SC, Faye Slawson (Billy) of Mobile, AL, Kathy Sowell (Bob) of Trumann, AR; and brothers, Doug Nester (Sarah) of Carrollton, Otis Nester of Vivian, LA; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Nester, Tommy Nester, Don Alderson, Joe Miller, Donnie Wiltshire, and Lou Reed. Honorary pallbearers will be John Beckwith, Tommy Wiltshire, Coleman Rich, George Beckwith, and Jimmy Avant.

The family of Mr. Nester wish to extend special thanks to David and Donita Haggerty, Julia Campbell, Martha and Rosemary and the wonderful staff at Golden Age Nursing Home in Greenwood, and to Tabatha and Wendy with Community Hospice.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Baptist Church.

Leonard R. "Bill" Corley
(August 24, 1935 - September 23, 2014)

Funeral services for Leonard R. "Bill" Corley of Carrollton will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, in the Lee Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Reidis Nash and Rev. Billy Little officiating. Burial will follow in New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery near Carrollton.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 23, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., at Lee Funeral Home.

Mr. Corley, 79, died on Tuesday, September 23, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Greenwood.

He was born icon in Carroll County on August 24, 1935, to the late Joseph Andy and Lillie Beatrice Corder Corley.

He was a retired mechanic and business owner and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Lott Corley; sisters, Sylvia Campbell, Stella Kent, and Myrtis Cox; and brothers, Joe Corley Jr. and Fred Corley.

Survivors include his four daughters, Janice Corley Crowder (Tim) of Bartlett, TN, Peggy Corley of Carrollton, Judy Corley of Monroe, LA, and Scarlett Stokes (Danny) of Carrollton; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Caleb Crowder, Justin Bingham, Logan Bingham, Richie Corder, Terry Cox, and Timmy Corley. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy McClain, Richard Corder, and Billy Earl Corder.

Jeanette R. Neal
(January 2, 1923 - November 13, 2015)

Graveside services for Mrs. Jeanette Richardson Neal will be 11 A.M. Monday, November 16, 2015 at Evergreen cemetery in North Carrollton with Bro. Kevin Smith officiating.

Mrs. Neal passed away peacefully on Friday, November 13, 2015 at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. She was 92 years old. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Lee Funeral Home in Winona.

Mrs. Neal was born icon on January 02, 1923 to the late Andrew L. and Lettie P. Richardson in Carroll County.

She was a homemaker and member of North Carrollton Baptist Church since 1960, serving as Sunday school teacher for many of those years. She also served on various committees of many kinds during her long membership.

Mrs. Neal was beloved by many in the community for her kind and generous spirit. Her home was the central meeting place for many Thanksgiving dinners with family from surrounding states, their children and grandchildren coming to be part of the reunion.

Mrs. Neal was concerned for others outside her own family, including those in the larger communities. She had an open and loving spirit towards others, and a deep faith in Jesus Christ.

Mrs. Neal is survived by her daughter, Ginny Anne Neal of North Carrollton, two sons, Michael Drew Neal (Lou Ann) of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Hulet Wayne Neal (Marilyn) of North Carrollton; four grandchildren, Brooke Neal of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sean Neal of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Stacy L. Melton of New Iberia, Louisiana, and Timothy Wayne Neal of North Carrollton; two great-grandchildren, Michael Melton, Jr. and Trey Melton.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Neal was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Hulet Neal; son, Timothy Lee Neal, two sisters, Ruby Richardson Lemley and Helen Richardson Neal; and five brothers, Harry Richardson, Kenneth (Andy) Richardson, Retus Richardson, Buster Richardson, and Tom Richardson.
Pallbearers will be Wilton Neal, Al Neal, Bill Neal, Raymond Neal, Sammy Mullins, and Chip Gray.
Memorials may be made to the North Carrollton Baptist Church Youth Fund.

Earl W. "Jack" Jordan
(June 15, 1923 - September 21, 2014)

Graveside funeral services for Earl W. "Jack" Jordan of Kilmichael will be at 10:00 a.m on Tuesday, September 23, at Oakwood cemetery in Winona, with Rev. Randy Bridges and Rev. Albert Britt officiating.

Visitation will be Monday, September 22, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Oliver Funeral Home.

Mr. Jordan, 91, died at Vaiden Community Living Center in Vaiden on Sunday, September 21.

He was born icon in Lodi on June 15, 1923, to the late Thomas Dave and Laura Pyron Jordan.

He was a retired carpenter and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Corps of Engineers.

He was a member and deacon of Hays Creek Baptist Church.

Mr. Jordan is survived by his wife Catherine W. Jordan and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and one sister.

Greg Dees
(October 21, 1986 - November 5, 2015)

Greg A. Dees, 29, of Clinton (formerly of Winona), passed away Thursday, November 5, 2015 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. A celebration of life for Greg will be at 11:11 a.m. Tuesday, November 10, at First Baptist Church (309 Summit Street, Winona) with burial to follow at Winona Garden of Memory. Pastor Ryan Vaughn and Dr. Tim Mims will officiate the services.

Visitation will be Monday, November 9, at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center from 5 until 8 p.m. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Lee Funeral Home in Winona.

Greg, a teacher and coach at Raymond High School, loved baseball and was an avid fan of Mississippi State sports. He was very passionate about helping others, especially his students, not only in baseball, but in the game of life as well.

Greg was dedicated to his family, but had a special bond with his nephew, Camden.

He was a member of Pinelake Church in Clinton.

Greg is survived by his parents, Becky and Johnnie Dees; sister, Erica Dees; nephew, Camden Dees; grandfather, Neal Bond, all of Winona; grandmother, Estelle Rainey of Duck Hill; fiancée, Nancy Grace Abia of Dallas, TX; along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous friends. Greg is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Alice Vivian Dees and Johnnie E. Dees Sr.

Pallbearers are Tanner Bond, Joel Robertson, Quinn Axton, Greg Perry, Jeffrey Cook, and Kyle Mills.

Honorary pallbearers are Joey Johnson, Jamie Gant, Jason Russom, Evinn Beck, Cody Toth, Justin Bautista, Keith Ware, and Sean Bard.
