Elwood L. Edwards, 80, tax attorney, real estate developer of Memphis, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2007, at his home. He was born icon March 10, 1927, in Banner, the son of Andrew H. Edwards Sr. and Clarice Smith Edwards. His funeral service was Sunday at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Don Head
Donald R. (Don) Head, 54, of The Colony, Tx., died Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at Trinity Medical Center in Carrollton, Tx. He was born icon April 22, 1953 in Sacramento, Ca., the son of Lt. Col. James A. and Henrietta Head. He graduated from the University of Missouri at Rolla with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and received an MBA and Masters in Information Systems from the University of Dallas.

Harold Edwards
William Harold Edwards, 86, of Bruce, died, Saturday, October 27, 2007 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born icon February 7, 1921 in Calhoun County, the son of William Lewis and Bertha Simpson Edwards. He was a farmer and was retired from Bryan Foods in West Point. He was a WWII Army Veteran, and was a graduate of Mississippi State University. He served as deacon of Ellard Baptist Church for over 50 years.

Mary Ellen Johnson
Mary Ellen Legge Johnson, 79, of Batesville, died Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at her home. She was born icon July 8, 1928, the daughter of Edna Virginia Hill and Ira Francis Legge in Panola County. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Batesville where she was a member of the Senior Adult Choir. She was also a member of “Willing Workers” Sunday School class and a longtime member of the “Keenagers” group.

James Mims
R. James Mims, 83, of Vardaman and formerly of Duncan, died Friday, October 26, 2007 at Golden Living Center in Tupelo. He was a carpenter and member of Midway Baptist Church. He was a Veteran and a Mason. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Willie Armstrong Jr.
Willie Armstrong Jr., 77, of Derma, died Thursday, October 18, 2007 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born icon February 1, 1930 in Calhoun County, the son of Willie Armstrong Sr. and Nanurva Glaspie Armstrong. He was retired from the City of Derma as a water assistant.

Beatrice Galloway
Beatrice Oliver Galloway, 75, of Bruce, died Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Calhoun Health Services Nursing Home in Calhoun City. She was born icon May 13, 1932 in Calhoun County, the daughter of Johnny Forest and Thedie Ellen Adams Oliver. She was a former sales clerk for M&M, TWL and Dollar General Store, and she was a member of Pittsboro Baptist Church.

James Brown
James Elias Brown, 65, of McLoud, OK died Thursday, October 25, 2007 at Baptist Integris Hospital, Oklahoma City, OK.

Pat Ferguson
Patrick T. (Pat) Ferguson, 64, of Bruce, died Sunday, December 23, 2007 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital - DeSoto Center in Southaven. He was born icon August 10, 1943 in Bruce. He was a member of Rocky Branch Baptist Church and charter member of C&Y Hunting Club. He was retired from Columbia Gulf Transmission Co. and was a devoted hunter and fisherman.

Noel Peacock
Noel William Peacock, 61, of Derma, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born icon March 5, 1946 in Charleston to the late Frances Godwin and John William Peacock. He was a retired truck driver for Yellow Freight and was a member of Derma Baptist Church of Derma. He was an avid camper and enjoyed golfing as a pastime.

Essie Hardin
Essie Hardin, of the Reid community, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, MS. She was a homemaker and an active member of Poplar Spring Baptist Church. In her seventy years of life, she dedicated herself to God, her family, and to efforts that would make life better for not only those she loved, but also for others who she encountered on the road of life.

Willie Pearl Hasting
Willie Pearl Hasting, 73, of Bruce, died December 29, 2007 at Grenada Lake Medical Center. She was born icon November 23, 1934 in Tallahatchie County, the daughter of Fonzy Brasher and Allie Parker Lovell. She was a member of Bruce First Baptist Church and WMU, and was a past church secretary. She was also a member of Eastern Star, D.A.R., and Twentieth Century Club. She was a retired registered nurse with 30 years of service.

Lucille Fariss
Lucille Price Fariss, 88, of Oakland, died Friday, December 21, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-NM in Oxford. She was born icon August 28, 1919 in Yalobusha County to Johnny Royce and Vera Shaw Shannon. Mrs. Fariss was a homemaker and member of Oakland Baptist Church.

Ina Maurine Baker
Ina Maurine Baker, 71, of Olive Branch died Friday, December 28, 2007 at Baptist East in Memphis. She was born icon August 27, 1936 in Lake City, Ar., the daughter of Barney and Willie Baldwin Rutherford. She was a member of Longview Baptist Church in Olive Branch and was a retired telephone operator for Baptist Hospital-Central and Baptist East after 20 years of service.

Pete Mayhan
Funeral service for H.B. ‘Pete’ Mayhan was Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007 at 1 p.m. at New Liberty Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. His survivor is a granddaughter-in-law, Angela Long, Houston. Pryor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Elizabeth Young Cotten, 65, of Banner, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at her home. She was born icon December 8, 1942 in Crowder, Ms., the daughter of Harry and Mary Erdna Thomas Young. She was a 1961 graduate of Sunflower Consolidated High School, and was a retired receptionist at Dr. Gene Beadle’s Chiropractic Clinic in Bruce.

Mike Allen
Michael Lee “Mike” Allen, 61, of Big Creek, died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born icon February 12, 1947 in Big Creek, the son of Omer C. and Martha Belle “Toni” Beckett Allen. He was a 1965 graduate of the University of Mississippi with a Bachelors of Public Administration. He was retired from Weyerhaeuser and Bowater, and was enlisted in the National Guard. He loved working at his shop and farm.

Ed Moorhead Sr.
Edward Earl (Ed) Moorhead Sr., 81, of Bruce, died Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital - North Mississippi in Oxford. He was born icon July 11, 1926 in Lafayette County, the son of Lyles and Clarice Addington Moorhead. He was a WWII Veteran and was a P.F.C. in the U.S. Army, First Cavalry. He was a retired catfish farmer and attended Yalobusha Primitive Baptist Church. He enjoyed being a mechanic with boat motors, playing the guitar and teaching others to play.

Wilbur Shephard
Wilbur Ray (P.A.) Shephard, 69, of Randolph, died Monday, March 31, 2008 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born icon April 10, 1938 in Robbs community, the son of Cliff and Annie Pearl Carr Shephard. He was retired.

Martha Baker
Martha F. Reeves Baker, 76, of Oxford and formerly of Bruce, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital - North Mississippi in Oxford. She was born icon May 14, 1932 in Calhoun City, the daughter of R.C. and Mattie Aston Reeves. She was a member of Water Valley First Baptist Church and was a housewife.

Neta Knight
Neta Irene Files Knight, 52, of Calhoun City, died Friday, June 13, 2008 at her home. She was born icon June 29, 1955 in Eupora, the daughter of John Prentice and Nellie Faye Holloway Files. She was a disabled factory worker.

Bertha Maldonado
Bertha Jo Maldonado, infant, of Vardaman, died Monday, June 9, 2008 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born icon the same day, the daughter of Kimberly Gregory and Hilario Maldonado Santos.

Jason Wright
Jason Edward Wright, 29, of Vardaman, died Sunday, June 15, 2008 in Houston. He was born icon June 4, 1979 in Grenada, the son of Walter B. and Deborah Louise Johnson Wright. He was a self-employed landscaper and member of Faith Bible Church in Houston.

Evelyn Poteete
Evelyn Hayles Poteete, 90, of Bruce, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at Bruce Community Living Center. She was born icon October 8, 1917 in Springdale community, the daughter of James Carter and Lillie Mae Jenkins Hayles. She was a homemaker, an Avon sales representative, and a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.

James "Fat" Thomas
James C. (Fat) Thomas, 61, formerly of Calhoun City, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 28, 2008 at St. Mary Hospital in Milwaukee, Wi. with his family at his side.

Ruby Thompson
Ruby McGee Thompson, 77, of Orem, Utah, died July 19, 2008 at her home. She was born icon July 16, 1931 in Calhoun County, to Ethel and James Branyon McGee, and was raised in Bruce. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree at Blue Mountain and taught high school business for two years. After marrying, she moved to Louisiana, then Utah, where she worked at Geneva Steel for 25 years, retiring in 1986. She was a Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Provo for many years and during recent years, enjoyed activities with the Red Hat Club and her friends at the Orem Senior Center.

Lee Edward Jackson
Lee Edward Jackson, 68, of Bruce, died Thursday, July 24, 2008. His funeral service is today, Wednesday, at 1 p.m. at Jackson Chapel in Bruce with Rev. Tony Tillman officiating. Belle Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sue Upshaw
Susan “Sue” Boland Upshaw, 64, of Calhoun City, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at Bruce Community Living Center. She was born icon June 1, 1944, the daughter of Emmett and Mary Lester Boland. She was a homemaker and member of Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church and the Tri-Community Homemakers Club.
