Peggy Sue Clark, 55, of Oxford, died Sept. 28, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital North MS in Oxford. She was a clerical employee with Bank of Holly Springs.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 30 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Pisgah cemetery in Hickory Flat. Bro. Cliff Smiley officiated.

She leaves her husband, John Clark; a son, Christopher Renick of Batesville; three daughters, Samantha Potts of Hickory Flat, Wendy Medling of Oxford, Tammy Calhoun of Freemont, Ohio; a brother, Mike Garner of Hickory Flat; a sister, Kathleen Gullick of Clarksville; and 10 grandchildren.

Travis Ray Cole

Travis Ray Cole, 51, of Memphis, Tenn., died Sept. 28, 2006. He was a Baptist and a hair stylist.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 3 at Hill Crest Cemtery in Holly Springs. Bro. Steve Jenssen officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a daughter, Corbie Erin Cole of Memphis, Tenn.; three brothers, Howard Cole Jr., William Cole, both of Byhalia, Danny E. Cole of Memphis, Tenn.; and a sister, Lucy Jenssen of Olive Branch.

Richard James Franklin Sr.

Richard James (Pete) Franklin Sr., 68, of Michigan City, died Sept. 27, 2006 at his home. He was the widower of Betty L. Franklin. He was a retired factory worker with the Troxel Company.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 1 at Sims Chapel MB Church in Michigan City, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Adam Gholson officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves five daughters, Rhonda L. Mabone of Collierville, Tenn., Bulah Woodard of Olive Branch, Carlene Franklin of Memphis, Tenn., Belinda Foster of Michigan City, Patricia Allen of Olive Branch; three sons, Barry Franklin of Moscow, Tenn., Jerry Franklin of Michigan City, Richard Franklin Jr. of Memphis, Tenn.; his mother, Emma B. Franklin of Michigan City; his brother, Willie G. Franklin of Memphis, Tenn.; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Beavis Franklin Jr.,

Pallbearers were Tavares Woodard, Gary Henderson, Marquail Henderson, James Williams, Lee Earl Jones and Brandon Luellen. Honorary pallbearers were his sons and sons-in-law.

Percy Lee Holt

Percy Lee Holt, of Potts Camp, died Sept. 25, 2006 at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 1 at Royston Chapel CME Church in Potts Camp. Burial was in the church cemetery. N.L. Jones Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his mother, Lovie Cathey of Potts Camp; two sons, Percy Lee Holt Jr. of Potts Camp, Jacob Blett of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a daughter, Charlene Taylor of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a brother, Jimmy Cathey of Potts Camp; three sisters, Mary Evans of Ashland, Mattie Woods of New Albany, Bobbie Martin of Potts Camp; eight other sisters and two brothers on his father’s side; a special friend, Betty Jenkins of Potts Camp; and three grandchildren.

Mattie Mae Jones

Mattie Mae Jones, 90, of Holly Springs, formerly of Moscow, Tenn., died Sept. 27, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. She was the widow of L.C. Franklin Sr. She was a member of the Mother Board and choir.

Services were held at 12 noon on Sept. 30 at New Bethel MB Church in Moscow, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Sylvester Jones officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves three sons, Theodis Jones, Willie Ervin Franklin, L.C. Franklin Jr., all of Moscow, Tenn.; a sister, Vorice Watkins of Orewell, Ohio; a brother, Johnny Johnson of Holly Springs; 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ben Franklin, Antonio Jones, Ricky Franklin Jr., Ricky Franklin Sr., Roderick Blaylock and Darrius Morrow.

Luther Leopard

Luther Leopard, 77, of Victoria, died Sept. 30, 2006 at the home of his daughter in Hickory Flat. He was the widower of Juanita Leopard and a sheet metal worker.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 3 at Victoria Heights Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in Antioch cemetery in Ripley. Bro. Bob Johnson officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his daughter, Lucille Leopard of Hickory Flat; a brother, Isom Leopard of Ripley; and a sister, Margaret Smith of Memphis, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by a son, Leland Leopard.

Vivian Gertrude Moore

Vivian Gertrude Moore, 95, of Holly Springs, died Sept. 25, 2006 at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab in Holly Springs. She was a member of the Missionary Society, class leader, M.I. College alumni, a member of the Federated Club, a member of the Marshall County Retired Teachers Association and a retired teacher with Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Anderson Chapel CME Church. Rev. Denise Anders-Modest officiated. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two nieces, Mary Frances Robinson and Barbara Moore, both of Holly Springs.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Moore, Thomas Moore; and two sisters, Mary Frances Moore, Claudia Moore.

Pallbearers were Russell Johnson, Dale DeBerry, Charles Terry, Henry T. Hood, Jesse Jackson and Paul Lampley. Honorary pallbearers were Lawrence Autry, Floyd Miller, Napoleon Smith, Joe Boone, Wallace Longest, Joseph Ford, William Henley, Purvis Love, Arvern Moore and Anthony McKinnon.

Howard M. Sowell

Howard M. Sowell, 63, of Byhalia, died Sept. 22, 2006 at his home. He was a machinist with Gem, Inc.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Byhalia cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves three sons, Larry Sowell of Olive Branch, Mike Sowell of Madison, Paul Blackard of Independence; two brothers, Sonny Sowell of Coldwater, Leon Sowell of Slayden; and several grandchildren.

Annie Eloise Taylor

Annie Eloise Taylor, 73, of Detroit, Mich., born icon in Sallis, died Sept. 15, 2006. She received Christ at Bethesda Missionary Temple and united with Beulah First Missionary Baptist Church. She worked with the Board of Education until she retired after 20 years.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 23 at Puritan Street Church of Christ in Detroit. Robert L. Ware, pastor of Beulah First Missionary Baptist Church, officiated. Burial was in Trinity cemetery in Detroit. Cantrell Funeral Home, Detroit, Mich., was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Rev. Huey W. Taylor; a son, Douglas Edwin; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Dandridge of Detroit, Mich., Wanda Lucas of Holly Springs; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Blanche Dermaus.

Pallbearers were deacons of Beulah First Missionary Baptist Church.

Oliver Hymon White Sr.

Oliver Hymon (Shag) White Sr., 80, Chicago, Ill., formerly of Holly Springs, died Sept. 17, 2006. After completing his tour of duty in the United States Navy, he moved to Chicago, Ill. He was employed at Interlake Steel for 32 years. He opened the Black Hut Lounge. After retirement, he took another job with the City of Chicago.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 23 at St. Paul CME Church in Chicago, where he was a member. Burial was in Restvale cemetery in Alsip, Ill. Rev. Patrick Key, pastor, read the eulogy. O’Bee — W. Jones Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Ethel Lee; two daughters, Beverly Mayes of Aurora, Ill, Trina White of Chicago, Ill.; a son, Timothy Walker-White of Chicago, Ill.; three brothers, Louis White of Memphis, Tenn., Daniel White of Holly Springs, Robert White of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Girlie Mae White of Chicago, Ill., Joycestine Robertson of Holly Springs; nine grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James Mayes Jr., Robert Downer Sr., Everett Johnson, James Mayes Sr., Dennis Green, and Jawan White. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Earl Robertson, Daniel White, Robert White, Roosevelt Williams, Timothy Walker, Louis White and Aaron Williams.

Ernest F. Young

Ernest F. Young, 95, of Marshall County, died recently. He was the widower of Mabel Edlin Young, who died Oct. 12, 1999. He and Mabel lived in Potts Camp until May 2005 when he moved to Rosewood Retirement Home in Belden. He was a member of Potts Camp Baptist Church, a retired farmer, and a storekeeper. He retired from US Forest Service at age 88. He served in Civilian Conservation Corp in 1935 and 1936. He helped to build many of the roads in Marshall County and planted many acres of pine trees for erosion control.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 30 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel.

He leaves his wife, Zelma Smith Young; a son, Lanier Young of Belden; a daughter, Ernestine Barber of Holly Springs; two stepsons, Raymond Smith of Olive Branch, Charles Smith of Waterford; three stepdaughters, Lois Cox of Waterford, Geneva Anderson of Red Banks, Hazel Westermoreland of Trenton, Tenn.; a brother, John Young of Van Couver, Wash.; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ezma Young Smith; and a great-grandson, Kevin Barber.

Robert Johnson Jr.

Robert (Bop) Johnson Jr., 68, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Byhalia, died March 3, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on March 9 at St. Matthews MB Church in Byhalia, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pastor Patrick Stewart officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his nieces who were his caretakers, Mary Johnson Harper and Leslie Johnson, both of Memphis, Tenn.; and a brother, Milton Johnson Sr. of Kenosha, Wisc.

Pallbearers were Edward C. Johnson, Freddie Dillard, Fredreld D. Stephens, Milton Johnson III, Solomon Wolf Jr. and Mark Liggins. Honorary pallbearers were Albert Wolfe, Milton Johnson II, Fred Smith, Robert McKay, Milton Wolf and James Bookins.

Era Lorine Knighton

Era Lorine Knighton, 88, of Laws Hill community, died March 8, 2006 at Alliance HealthCare in Holly Springs. She was the widow of Jodie Knighton. She was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on March 10 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Mt. Moriah cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves three sons, Robert Knighton of Cherokee Valley, Ark., Fort Knighton of Ashland, Marshall Knighton of Plainsville, Ill.; two daughters, Hazel Cook of Laws Hill, Carol Atherton of Laws Hill; a brother, Ernest Smith of Oakland; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Clark Knighton.
