Willie B. Walls

Willie B. Walls, 88, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 26, 2006 at his home. He was the widower of Janie Elliott Walls. He was a member of First Thessalonia MB Church in Memphis, Tenn. and a retired concrete finisher with a construction company.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2006 at St. Luke Church of God in Christ, Ashland. Burial was in Mt. Zion CME Church cemetery in Benton County. Elder Nathaniel Holleman officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his companion with whom he lived, Leathy Allen of Holly Springs; five daughters, Ellie B. Williams of Holly Springs, Fairella Johnson of Chicago, Ill., Mae Willie Johnson, Gladys Walls, Janie Walls, all of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Jimmie Lee Walls, Willie Anthony Walls, both of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Beatrice Bean of Holly Springs; 26 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Willie E. Johnson, Samuel Johnson, Dwayne Johnson, Keith Johnson, Melvin Williams, Raymond Williams, Timothy Johnson and Willie James Fleming. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmie Walls and Willie A. Walls.

Dorothy Marie Whitfield

Dorothy Marie Whitfield, 71, of Memphis, Tenn., died March 3, 2006 at Germantown Methodist Hospital. She was the widow of Harvey Whitfield. She was founder, president and senior pastor of Life Training Center in Memphis.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on March 6 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Cornersville cemetery. Rev. Larry Kirk officiated.

She leaves two sons, Bradford Jackson of Arkabutla, Harvey C. Whitfield of Stafford, Va.; three daughters, Patti Martin of Holly Springs, Amanda Daughtry, Dotty Jackson, both of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Rev. Larry Kirk of Jackson, Tenn.; three sisters, Mary Ann Hovey of Humboldt, Tenn., Sue Gaines of Arlington, Tenn., Naomi Young of Summerville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Kirk Brown, Eric Jackson, Michael Weeks, Paul Parker, Sonny Kirk and Brett Young.

Christopher Raymond Rixie
Christopher Raymond Rixie, 19, of Olive Branch, died April 26, 2005 at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. He was a student at Tennessee Technology Center.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on April 29 at Longview Heights Baptist Church in Olive Branch. Burial was in Memphis Memory Gardens. Memphis Funeral Home Poplar was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his parents, Marcie and Chuck Moss of Byhalia, and Jimmy and Elizabeth Rixie of Olive Branch; two stepsisters, Joanna Cohn of Crystal Springs, Jill Blakney of Hattiesburg; two stepbrothers, Lewis Stringfellow, Robert Stringfellow, both of Olive Branch; his fiancée, Jessica Walker of Byhalia; and his grandparents, Larry and Estelle Russom of Memphis.

Memorial contributions may be made to Longview Baptist Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Paula Jones Salter
Paula Jones Salter, 45, of Forest, died May 1, 2005, at St. Dominic Hospital following complications from multiple sclerosis. A professional economic developer and marketing analyst, Mrs. Salter held the post of deputy director of economic development at the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians at the time of her retirement in 1991. She was a member of Forest United Methodist Church, the University of Mississippi Alumni Association, Daughters of the American Revolution, Magna Charta Dames and Colonial Dames. She was a founding member of the “Ladies of the Night” book club and active in many civic organizations.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. May 3 at Forest United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mike Sahler and the Rev. Milton Whatley officiated. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. and interment will be made in Oddfellows cemetery in Macon.

Survivors include her husband of 23 years, Sidney L. (Sid) Salter of Forest; one daughter, Katherine B. (Kate) Salter of Oxford; her mother, Mrs. Merle Dent Jones of Macon; and a brother, Augustus R. (Gus) Jones of Aberdeen.

She was preceded in death by her father, Capt. Whitney B. Jones Jr., who was a distinguished U.S. Navy civil engineer and at the apex of his career commanded the world’s two largest Seabee bases.

Pallbearers were Marty Wiseman, David Hampton, Danny Phillips, Bill Jacobs, Andy Chambers, Tre’ Chambers, Freddie Bagley and Charlie Mitchell.

William Carnail Shelton
William Carnail (Nail) Shelton, 49, of Aurora, Ill., formerly of Holly Springs, died April 15, 2005 at his home. He was a member of the National Honors Society, a member of the United States Marine Corps, where he was a 3rd Battalion Series Honor Guard and a recipient of the Rifle Sharpshooters Badge. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for over 20 years.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on April 25 at Logan Street Missionary Baptist Church in Batavia, Ill., where he was a member. Rev. S. Todd Yeary officiated. Moss Family Funeral Home of Batavia, Ill., was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Daisy Williams-Shelton; two daughters, Angela Shelton, Denise Shelton; a son, Richard Shelton, all of Aurora, Ill.; his parents, Tillman and Ruthie Shelton of Holly Springs; three brothers, Tillman Shelton Jr., of Aurora, Isaac Shelton of Fountain, Colo., Ollie Shelton of Holly Springs; six sisters, Lolar Beard of Holly Springs, Eva Jackson of Ashland; Lurlean Shelton, Willie Ann Shelton, both of Houston, Tx., Marjorie Sise, Shelia Shelton, both of Holly Springs; and three grandchildren.

Lola Smith
Lola Smith, 74, of Byhalia, died April 23, 2005 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. She was a member of The Jehovah Witness.

Services were held at 12 noon on April 28 at The Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall in Holly Springs. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Michael Smith officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Eunice Smith; two sons, Michael Smith of Patterson, NY, Ronnie Smith of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Marshall Malone of Victoria; two sisters, Naomi Malone of Victoria, Omega Larkin of West Point; and a granddaughter.

George William Thornton
George William (Bill) Thornton, 62, of Memphis, Tenn., died April 30, 2005 at his home. He was a member of Parkway Village Methodist Church. He was employed in printing ink sales. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on May 2 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Bethlehem Methodist cemetery. Bro. Paul Knight officiated.

He leaves his wife, Ina Faye Work Thornton; a daughter, Victoria Thornton; a sister, Carol Florow of Diamondhead; and two grandchildren.

Edna Cochran Wells
Edna Cochran Wells, 56, of Holly Springs, died April 27, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She was a member of Hebron Chapel CME Church, a church secretary, an adult Sunday school teacher, a church trustee, 4-H Club troop leader, a member of Heroines of Jericho Court #38, Marshall County Woman of the Year 1998, former Social Services Director of the Year for the State of Mississippi, and secretary for the Unit Burial Association. She was social services director of Trinity Mission Health and Rehab.

Services were held at 12 noon on May 2 at Anderson Chapel CME Church. Burial was in Hebron Chapel CME Church cemetery. Rev. Shawn Patton officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Willie Lewis Wells Sr.; two sons, Willie Lewis Wells Jr., Elton Franklin, both of Holly Springs; her mother, Pearlie Cochran of Holly Springs; nine sisters, Lillian Smith of Holly Springs, Hannah Tunstall of Victoria, Joanner Edwards of Olive Branch, Alice Jean Frazier of Memphis, Inez Collier of Milwaukee, Wisc., Willie Etta Wortham of Jackson, Ida Brown, Sarah Moore, Pearlie Smith, all of St. Louis, Mo.; four brothers, John William Cochran of Hillside, N.J., Elree Cochran Jr. of Holly Springs; David Cochran of Ashland, Philander Cochran of Atlanta, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her son, Willie Lorenzo Wells.

Pallbearers were Edward Sims Jr., C.L. Wilkins, Eric Lester, Nathaniel Tunstall, James Alford, Sammie Faulkner, Wayne Stinson, James Brown. Honorary pallbearers were Eric Tunstall, Sterling Edwards, Jessie Frazier, Wendell Smith, Charles Wortham, Dean Cochran, John Cochran III, Jonathan Edwards, Eldred Cochran, Wesley Smith, Cedric Wortham, William Cochran.

Dean Edward Bridgeforth Jr
Dean Edward (Junior) Bridgeforth Jr., 35, of Holly Springs, died May 1, 2005 at his home. He was a member of Pleasant Grove MB Church in Red Banks, a member of Chulahoma Masonic Lodge #241 Local, and supervisor of Swift Transportation in Memphis, Tenn.

Services were held at 3 p.m. on May 8 at Rust College Doxey Auditorium. Burial was in Pleasant Grove MB Church cemetery. Rev. S. A. Phillips officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Barbara Renae Jones Bridgeforth; three daughters, Rhyan Monique Bridgeforth, Mya Bridgeforth, Courtney Porter, all of Holly Springs; a son, Dean Edward Bridgeforth III of Holly Springs; his father, Dean E. Bridgeforth of Holly Springs; four sisters, Ava Garth of Memphis, Tenn., Andrea Marion, Edith Sims, both of Holly Springs, Paulette Ballard of Las Vegas, Nev.; three brothers, Larry Bridgeforth, Glynn Bridgeforth, Samuel (Dennis) Bridgeforth, all of Holly Springs.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Jones Bridgeforth; a sister, Peggy Bridgeforth; and a brother, Rodney Bridgeforth.

Pallbearers were Chaddrick Marion, Chelsey Malone, Chauncey Marion Sr., Rodney Bridgeforth Jr., Lott Garth III, Cecil Marion Jr., Christopher Bridgeforth, Jason Jones. Honorary pallbearers were Samuel Bridgeforth, Larry Bridgeforth, Linwood Turner, Joseph Ballard, Glynn Bridgeforth, Albert Sims, Clifford Sims, Lemarquis Bobo.

Betty Lee Bulimore Clark
Betty Lee Bulimore Clark, 63, of Holly Springs, died May 7, 2005, at her home. She was a secretary for over 14 years at Southern Homes and a member of Sara Baptist Church.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on May 9 at Dickins Funeral Home Chapel in Batesville. Burial was in Batesville Magnolia. Rev. John Stewart officiated.

She leaves her husband, William Lewis Clark Sr.; a son, William Lewis Clark Jr. of Sardis; a daughter, Sandra Faye White of Batesville; two sisters, Mary Ruth Patton of Pensacola, Fla., Ruby Clark of Arkabutla; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard.

Robenia Freeman
Robenia Freeman, 79, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Chulahoma, died April 29, 2005 at her home. She was a retired school teacher. A former member of Chulahoma Baptist Church, she served on the Usher and Mother Board and she also served as a member of the Pastor’s Aid Club. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She later joined Mt. Joyner Baptist Church where she also served on the Mother Board.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on April 30 at Mt. Joyner M.B. Church in Memphis. Burial was in Tyro Church cemetery. Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves six daughters, Elsie Freeman, Melvin Freeman, Eddie Freeman, Loice Nelson, Joyce Freeman, Leaser Freeman, all of Memphis, Tenn.; three sons, Clifton Freeman Jr. of Rockford, Ill., Leester Freeman of Oklahoma City, Okla., Larry Freeman of Victoria, Tx.; 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Maxine Naugher Horton
Maxine Naugher Horton, 98, died April 30 at Traceway Retirement Center in Tupelo. She taught at Eupora, Water Valley and Ecru. She did graduate work at MSU and Cornell University. In 1934, she was employed by the Mississippi State Extension Service as program director for the State 4-H Clubs. In addition to speaking at 4-H rallies, for many years she chaperoned the State 4-H winner to national conventions at Chicago and Washington, D.C. In 1946, she married icon John Presley Horton of Louisville.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Porter Funeral Home in Louisville with burial in Memorial Park cemetery.

She leaves a twin sister, Maurine Naugher Sewell of Memphis, Tenn., another sister, Jamie Naugher Woods of Holly Springs; and two brothers, Loran Naugher, David Naugher of Pontotoc.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, John David Naugher, Russell Carter Naugher, Loran Naugher Jr., Robert Woods, Charles Woods and James Sewell.

Dorothy Ruth Hunt
Dorothy Ruth Hunt, 61, of Tupelo, died May 3, 2005 at North MS Medical Center in Tupelo. She was employed at North MS Medical Center for many years and was also a caregiver to many children.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on May 7 at Mt. Zion MB Church in Verona. Burial was in Porter’s Memorial Garden in Tupelo. Rev. Donnell Nichols officiated. Serenity Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two sons, Roy Hunt of Alpharetta, Ga., Michael Hunt of Tupelo; and a sister, Frances Hunt of Tupelo.

Pallbearers were Kelsey Duffy, Ronnie Medcalf, Cedric White, Ramonte Green, Ray Berry, Titus White.

Rosietta Williams

PORT GIBSON -- Services for Rosietta Williams, 85, who died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Claiborne County Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Greater Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Leon Howard officiating.

Burial will follow in Thompson Memorial Garden cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home of Port Gibson.

Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. with family hour from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.

She was a member of Greater Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband, Van Williams; her parents, Mose and Mary Watkins-Kemp; two sisters, Ann Williams and Phyllis Kemp Nelson; and two brothers, Albert Kemp and Robert Brown.

Survivors include a friend, Tommy Myles of Port Gibson; two nieces, Cheye Williams and Noel Williams, both of Columbus, Ohio; one godson, Peter Shorts of Lorman; one daughter, Willie Ruth Shorts-Kemp of Lorman; one brother-in-law, Charles Nelson of Port Gibson; and a number of other relatives and friends.
