WOODVILLE - Services for Mary Jo Tillery, 69, of Doloroso, who died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Luther Bonds officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedar Rest No. 2 under the directions of Williams and Williams funeral home.

Visitation is from 1 p.m. until funeral time Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Tillery was born icon Dec. 25, 1932, the daughter of Lizzie and Joseph Bonds.

She was a housewife and a member and on the deaconess board of Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the deaconess board.

Survivors include her husband, Oscar Tillery of Woodville; two daughters, Mary Ferguson of Woodville and Barbara Bonds of Port Gibson; two sons, Oscar Tillery Jr. of Woodville and James Tillery of Memphis, Tenn.; five sisters, Veco McDonald and Minnie Dennis, both of Woodville, Toni Barnes and Johnnie Turner, both of Jackson, and Augustine Barnes of New Orleans; two brothers, Edgar Lee Barnes of Woodville and Field John Barnes of New Orleans; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Bessie Weathers

PORT GIBSON - Services for Bessie Weathers, 93, who died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at River Region Medical Center, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Magnolia Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. James Dorsey officiating.

Burial will follow in Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Survivors include one godson, Solomon Wilson of Port Gibson; one sister, Jessie Lucas of Battle Creek, Mich.; one niece, Claudette Richmond of Battle Creek; one nephew, George Wyatt of Washington, D.C.; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Billy Ray Matthews

Jan. 2, 1942 - Jan. 21, 2003

DOTHAN, Ala. - Private services for Billy Ray Matthews, 61, of Dothan, Ala., who died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, will be held at a later date.

Services will be under the direction of Byrd Funeral Home of Dothan.

Mr. Matthews was born icon Jan. 2, 1942, in Natchez.

He was a resident of Dothan and lived the early years of his life in Natchez. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Germany during his tour of duty and owned and operated Mobile Home Specialist of America in Eufaula, Okla., and Baton Rouge.

Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by one brother, Benjamin William Matthews and his parents, Levi Milton and Catherine Matthews.

Survivors include four sons, Billy Ray Matthews Jr. and Bobby Joe Matthews, both of Lancaster, Penn., Billy Romero Matthews of Dothan and Chance Scott Matthews of Meridian; seven daughters, Tracy Matthews of Dothan, Shawn Kelley Mixon of Oklahoma, Katherine Marie Matthews of Lancaster, Teresa Ann Matthews of Dothan, Lisa Marie Matthews and Misty Juanita Morgan, both of Meridian, and Angie Moran of Bay St. Louis; 25 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Homer Matthews of Illinois; five sisters, Earline Matthews Maxie, Myrtle Hay, Margaret Ann Johnson, Brenda Joyce St. Angelo and Wanda Faye Parker; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Lee Roy Smith Sr.

Oct. 18, 1921 - Jan. 20, 2003

GLOSTER - Services for Lee Roy Smith Sr., 81, of Gloster, who died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Field Memorial Hospital in Centreville, will be at 10 a.m. today at Brown Funeral Home with the Revs. Hilton Simmons Jr., Eddie Painter and Don Wells officiating.

Burial will follow in Roseland cemetery in Gloster under the direction of Brown Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 9 a.m. until service time today at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith was born icon Oct. 18, 1921, in Lincoln County, the son of Joseph and Nette Britt Smith.

He was retired from the U.S. Army with 41 years of service and with a rank of Colonel. He was a World War II veteran of the Pacific Theater, received the Silver Star for Heroism and four Bronze Stars for Valor. He was a retired police chief for the City of Gloster serving from 1968 to 1985. He was assigned to the 32nd Infantry Division in Brisbane, Australia in Dec. 1942, from 1942 to 1944, participated in the amphibious assault landings in Buna, New Guinea, Leyte and Luzon in the Phillipines and remained in the 32nd Infantry Division until the end of the war. He completed Advanced Infantry School, Advanced Army Intelligence School, Logistics Management School and Command & General Staff College. Mr. Smith was also a member of Galilee First Baptist Church and a 32nd Degree Mason.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Challie, Harvey and Clifton Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Wanzie Pickett Smith of Gloster; one son, Lee Roy Smith II of Natchez; one daughter, Sandra Smith Townsend and her husband, Melvin, both of Hazelhurst; six grandchildren, Lee Roy Smith III and Amber Smith, both of Baton Rouge, Chase Smith and Conner Smith, both of Vidalia, David and Janna Townsend of Scott, La. and Karl Townsend and his friend, Marsha Morris, both of Magnolia; three great-grandchildren, Allyson, Hunter and Dekota Townsend; two sisters, Louise Mason and Vera Mae Bryant, both of Holden, La.; and one niece, Diane Hinson of Holden.

Lawrence Abrams Sr.

Feb. 12, 1909 - Jan. 20, 2003

NATCHEZ - Graveside services for Lawrence Abrams Sr., 93, of Diamond Head formerly of Natchez, who died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at North Shore Regional Medical Center in Slidell, La., will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Natchez City cemetery.

Burial will follow under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Diamond Head Community Center.

Mr. Abrams was born icon Feb. 12, 1909, in Natchez, the son of Samuel and Sarah Millstein Abrams.

He was a graduate of Natchez High School and attended the University of Alabama. While a resident of Natchez, he served as past president of the Natchez Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce.

He owned and operated, with his brothers Leon, George and Milton, the Sam Abrams Department Stores and Coles Department Store. He was a past officer of the Diamondhead Community Association and the Property Owners Association. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a gunnery officer.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Schulein Abrams; two children, Lawrence Abrams Jr. and his wife, Lynn Jacobs Abrams, both of Chappaqua, N.Y., and Lynn Jeanette Abrams Berkeley and her husband, Alan J. Berkeley, both of Chevy Chase, Md.; five grandchildren, Michael Ethan Berkeley, Stephen Sidney Berkeley, Jennifer Leigh Berkeley, Gavin Samuel Abrams and Danielce Ashley Abrams; and one great-grandchild, Brian Jose Berkeley.

The family requests memorials be made to the charity of one's choice.

Charles Mascagni

NATCHEZ - Services for Charles Mascagni, 71, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Assumption Catholic Church.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Riley Roy Hancock

June 25, 1911 - Jan. 21, 2003

FRANKLIN COUNTY - Services for Riley Roy Hancock, 91, of Liberty formerly of Meadville, who died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Liberty Community Living Center, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Middleton Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Franklin Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Mr. Hancock was born icon June 25, 1911, in Franklin County, the son of Thomas J. Hancock and Linnie Pittman Hancock.

He was a retired Franklin County employee for District No. 5 and a member of Middleton Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Mr. Hancock was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

Survivors include one daughter, Helen H. Nicholdson of Madison; two sisters, Wilda Cothren of Meadville and Johnnie Parsons of Bogue Chitto; and one grandson.

John Lee Newsom

April 5, 1919 - Jan. 20, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for John Lee Newsom, 83, of Natchez, who died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with Lawrence Newsom and David Dollar officiating.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Newsom was born icon April 5, 1919, in Forman, Ark., the son of Harry Edgar and Eula McCormack Newsom.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Service Award.

Survivors include his wife, Josie Newsom of Natchez; one son, Lawrence "Eddie" Newsom of Natchez; daughter-in-law, Brenda Newsom; three grandchildren, Mark Mizell, Coby Sumrall and Joseph Newsom.

Pallbearers will be Tom Young, Earl Draine, R.L. Dodges, Dr. Gerald Nickerson, Spruce Durden and Lawrence Newsom.

Etta Washington Morris

June 30, 1945 - Jan. 17, 2003

KIRBY - Services for Etta Washington Morris, 57, of Washington, who died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at noon Thursday at New Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Luther Bonds officiating.

Burial will be in the Hunt Family cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Mrs. Morris was born icon June 30, 1945, in Adams County, the daughter of Fred Washington and Florence Bulter.

She was a 1964 graduate of S.V. Thompson High School, was employed by Diamond International, Jefferson County School and Professional Sitting Service and a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Joseph Morris.

Survivors include two sons, Calvin Morris of Natchez and Tony Morris and his wife, Subrina, both of Hanau, Germany; two daughters, Melissa Fletcher and her husband, Arvin, both of Natchez and Letita Roberts and her husband, Terry, both of Brandon; three brothers, Fred Washington and Edward Lee Washington, both of Dallas, and Clarence Hunt and his wife, Joann, both of Waxahatchie, Texas; five aunts, Eunice Dottery and her husband, James, both of Riverside, Calif., Nola Bernard and Joney Morris and her husband, James, both of Natchez, Lunie Green of Roxie and Lillie Green of Chicago; three uncles, McArthur Hunt and his wife, Viola, both of Riverside, Samuel Washington and his wife, Annette, both of Dallas, and Robert Lee Washington of Chicago; two sisters-in-law, Julia Kelly and her husband, Robert, both of Natchez and Mabel Piper of New Orleans; two brothers-in-law, Charles Morris and James Morris and his wife, Joney, both of Natchez; two aunts-in-law, Amie Hunt and Mary Lee Hunt, both of Natchez; 10 grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Morris, Stephen Piper, Jamar Bernard, Kevin Collins, Patrick Kelly and Larry Hunt Jr.

Catrina Roshea Allen

March 7, 1975 - Jan. 15, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for Catrina Roshea Allen, 27, of Natchez, who died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at South Fulton Memorial Hospital, will be at noon Thursday at Forest Aide Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Green officiating.

Burial will be in Pinehill cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ms. Allen was born icon March 7, 1975, in Adams County, the daughter of Gregory and Freda Allen.

She was a graduate of Natchez High School, was employed with Photocircuits, Inc. in Union City, Ga. and was a Baptist.

Survivors include her parents, Gregory and Freda Allen; one brother, Chris A. Madison; one half-sister, Talia Willis; grandmother, Rosetta Dottery; nine aunts, Francis Toles, Marqie Toles, Chrisceda Allan and Charlene Guido and her husband, TK, all of Chicago, Evelyn Brooks and her husband, James, Gladys Madison, Olivia Tilley and Christine Thompson and her husband, Allen, all of Natchez and Sherry Ford and her husband, Esaw, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; three uncles, Willard Madison, Fredrick Allen and Jerry Allen, all of Natchez; three nieces and two nephews; friend, Marshal Ford of Union City, Ga.; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be George Minor, Marcus Shaw, Soseph Blanton and Henry Washington.
