Cora Marie Gray Hurst

Cora Marie Gray Hurst, 81, of Bolivar, Tenn., formerly of Memphis, Tenn., died Aug. 19, 2006 in Memphis. She was the widow of William E. Hurst and Thomas Gray. She was a member of Old Union Baptist Church and had played piano for Bolivar Church of God and all over West Tennessee.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 21 at Shackelford Funeral Directors Bolivar Chapel. Burial was in Old Union cemetery in Hardin County, Tenn. Chip Woods, Billy Barnes and Shannon Saliba officiated.

She leaves five daughters, Kay Rish of Byhalia, Brenda Blackard of Middleton, Tenn., Becky Sawyer of Cordova, Terry Cole, Vicky Jones, both of Memphis; three sons, Jerry, Kenneth and Jeff Gray, all of Memphis; a brother, Dick Evans of Cullman, Ala.; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Joe and Ricky Gray, and one granddaughter, Shannon Rish.

Memorials may be directed to the Bolivar Church of God.

William Wright Newsom

William Wright Newsom, 85, of Holly Springs, died Aug. 18, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi in Oxford. He was the widower of Jane Graham Newsom. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a Holly Springs City Clerk and Tax Collector for 36 years. He was a member of VFW and a major benefactor of the Clydesdale Christmas Store.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 21 at First United Methodist Church. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery. Rev. Milton Boyd and Rev. Doyle Mitchell officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves two daughters, Barbara Busick of Jackson, Judy Mims of Kosciusko; a brother, Bobby Newsom, of Panama City, Fla.; four sisters, Agnes Johnson of Madison, Dolly White of Holly Springs, Frances Moore of Byhalia, Marjorie Haffner of Tampa, Fla.; and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Charlene Newsom.

Pallbearers were Matthew Mims, Ben Mims, Sam White, Les Haffner, Herman Young, Bud Holbrook, Ronnie Luther and Hoyt Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were John Dabney Brown, Graham Miller, Gene Brown Sr., Gary Barnett, Harry Stevens, Bobby Bonds, John Boyuka, Tim Liddy, Frank Schmitt and Guy Shaw.

Memorials may be made to Clydesdale Christmas Store, 843 Peyton Rd., Holly Springs, MS 38635; or Holly Springs First United Methodist Church.

Amy Jean Taylor

Amy Jean Taylor, 77, of Hickory Flat, died Aug. 14, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in New Albany.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 19 at Reids Gift Baptist Church in Potts Camp, where she was a member. Burial was in McKay cemetery in Hickory Flat. Serenity Funeral Home of New Albany was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves four children Molise Pinson, Freddie Gene Taylor, Lena Mae Taylor, all of Hickory Flat, Rose Mary Wilson of New Albany; three brothers, Arthur Harris, William Harris, both of Memphis, Tenn., William Frank Harris of New Albany; three sisters, Emma Burrell, Mattie Harris, both of Mason, Tenn., Issa Lee Williams; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Simon Tucker

Simon Tucker, 96, of Holly Springs, died Aug. 12, 2006 at Alliance HealthCare System. He was a member of Hopewell No. 2 MB Church in Hudsonville, and a laborer with Tire Yard in Holly Springs.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 19 at Gray’s Chapel CME Church in Hudsonville. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Joe Lester officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Martha Sledge Tucker of Chicago, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Pauletta Robinson, Bessie McKinnon, both of Chicago; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, John L. Tucker; four sisters and two brothers.

Pallbearers were relatives and friends.

Agnes Haddock Underhill

Agnes Haddock Underhill, 93, of Memphis, Tenn., died Aug. 17, 2006 at Baptist Hospital in Columbus. She was the widow of Charles Herman Underhill. She was a native of the Winborn community and attended Potts Camp School. She was retired from Memphis Defense Depot and was a member of Woodland Presbyterian Church.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 20 at Memphis Funeral Home, Poplar Chapel, with burial in Memory Hill Garden.

She leaves a son, Charles Reuben Underhill of Caledonia; a daughter, Helen Spencer Frost of Columbus, Ga.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a niece, Elouise Austin Wolfe of Hickory Flat.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ika Haddock Austin and a brother, Donald Clinton Rogers.

Janet Rivers Dickinson Woods

Janet Rivers Dickinson Woods, 71 of Byhalia, died Aug. 21, 2006 at her home. She served as organist for the Byhalia United Methodist Church for more than 50 years; additionally, she served in various offices with the United Methodist Women and the Byhalia Garden Club and was a member of the Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 23 at Byhalia United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband of 53 years, Tommy L. Woods; three sons, Prentis Eugene Woods, Patrick Lamar Woods, Raymond Everett Woods, all of Byhalia; a daughter, Jeana Louise (Woods) Benson of New Orleans, La.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Byhalia United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 6, Byhalia, MS 38611, earmarked for the Family Enrichment Center.

Rufus Lee Floyd

Rufus Lee Floyd, 68, of Belden, died Aug. 22, 2006 at his home. He was a repairman for Exxon Gas until a job accident cause him to become disabled.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 26 at Faith Deliverance Temple, in Belden where he was a member. Burial was in Pontotoc City cemetery. Pastor Excel Ward and Bishop Hubert Mitchell officiated. Serenity Funeral Home of New Albany was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife of 47 years, Earnestine Ward Floyd; four children, Felix Floyd, Bobby Floyd, Patri Gladney, Mary Collins, all of Pontotoc; a brother, Murel Crudup of Rockwood, Tenn.; seven sisters, Marlene Summerall, Renee Reed, Alma Wester, all of Rockwood, Tenn., Wanda King of Lenoir, Tenn., Modessa Franklin of Little Rock, Calif., Linnie Fayissa of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Idella Richardson of Knoxville, Tenn.; a step-sister, Ernest Pearl Bernard of Detroit, Mich.; and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Danny Floyd, Bernard Floyd, Desmond Floyd, Willie Gardner, Vincent Hall and Robert Whiteside.

Q.C. Knox

Q.C. Knox, 72, of Jackson, formerly of Blue Mountain, died Aug. 12, 2006 at Pleasant Hill Community Living Center. He was a farmer.

Services were held at 12 noon on Aug. 26 at Antioch MB Church in Blue Mountain, where he was a member. Pastor Houston Evans officiated. Burial was in Antioch Academy cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home of New Albany was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a daughter, Onnie Garmon of Tupelo; six brothers, Clarence Knox of St. Louis, Mo., William Knox, George Knox, Joe L. Knox, Noverta Knox, all of Blue Mountain, Warren Riddle of New Albany; three sisters, Johnnie Bynum, Jennifer Riddle of Blue Mountain and Ella Mae Cook of New Albany.

Pallbearers were Kevin Knox, George Knox Jr., William Knox Jr., Joe Knox Jr., Bobby Knox and Evan Johnson.

Lonnie Ray Lemons

Lonnie Ray Lemons, of Houston, Tx., formerly of Hickory Flat, died Aug. 20, 2006. He was a cabinet maker in Nesbit.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Aug. 26 at Pine Grove cemetery in Hickory Flat. Father Jerry Daniels officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves four brothers, Johnny Lemons of Byhalia, Jimmy Lemons of Houston, Charles Collins of Hickory Flat, James Wesley Collins of Denver, Colo.; six sisters, Linda Wilkerson of Hickory Flat, Nan Lemons of Laurel, Sherry Leggett of Hickory Flat, Debbie Mattox of Myrtle, Shelia Lemons of Florida and Gloria Cokel of Meridian.

Rosa Lopez Melgoza

Rosa Lopez Melgoza, 22, of Victoria, died Aug. 22, 2006 at North MS Medical Center in Tupelo. She was a Baptist and disabled.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 25 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Byhalia cemetery.

She leaves her father, Salvador Lopez of Mexico; her mother, Debbie Nave of Victoria; two brothers, Anthony Lopez of Potts Camp, Joseph Lopez of Victoria; and a sister, Delana Lopez of Victoria.

Samantha F. Proctor

Samantha F. Proctor, 35, of Byhalia, died Aug. 17, 2006 at her home. She was in customer service at a restaurant.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Holly Springs Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Wardie Reagh

Wardie Reagh, 89, of Byhalia, died Aug. 23, 2006 at North Oak Regional Medical Center in Senatobia. She was the widow of Henry Leon Reagh. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Byhalia and an employee of Gem, Inc.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 26 at Glenfield cemetery in New Albany. Bro. Glenn Bien and Bro. Anthony Langley officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a son, Henry Thomas Reagh of Byhalia; two daughters, Billie Wilder of Hernando, Rosemary Shull of Prosperity; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Spencer Keith Wilder.

Pallbearers were Keith Wilder, Todd Reagh, Danny Whatley, Bobby Roberson, David Gadd, Chase Whatley, Mike Hamblin and James L. Reagh.

Houston Loverne Yeager

Houston Loverne Yeager, 73, of Bruce, died Aug. 21, 2006 at Houlka. He was a member of Latter Day Saints and a carpenter.

Services were held at 3 p.m. on Aug. 23 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in John K. Skelton cemetery in Lamar.

He leaves his wife, Vada Yeager of Bruce; three sons, Rex Yeager, Hank Yeager, both of Waterford, Mark Yeager of Lamar; two daughters, Kathy Sims of Tupelo, Kim Griffin of Bruce; a sister, Robbie Jean Taylor of Potts Camp; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Saddie Alexander

Saddie Alexander, 95, of Holly Springs, died Aug. 28, 206 at Alliance HealthCare System in Holly Springs. She was a former church usher and a retired domestic worker in private homes.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Sept. 2 at Hopewell No. 2 MB Church in Hudsonville, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Danny Kimbrough officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two sisters, Letha Reynolds of Memphis, Tenn., Virginia Glover of Holly Springs; and a brother, Dempsey Alexander Jr. of Holly Springs.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Minnie Alexander Cox.

Pallbearers were nephews, Hubert Riddle Jr., Dennis Kimbrough, Hazell Riddle, Ederick Glover, Jason Thompson, Eugene Hampton Jr.

David Lee Billingsley

David Lee Billingsley, 64, of Byhalia, died Sept. 2, 2006 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. A member of Harmontown Baptist Church, he was a parts salesman for Caterpillar, Inc. He was the widower of Ruby Spencer Billingsley.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 6 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Byhalia cemetery.

He leaves four brothers, Gerald Billingsley of Southaven; B.B. Billingsley Jr. of Coffeeville, Larry Billingsley of Waterford, Kenneth Billingsley of Senatobia; and two sisters, Shirley Davis of Oxford and Elizabeth Tomlin of Como.
