MEADVILLE - Services for Bessie Jackson, 63, of Meadville, who died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, in Meadville, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Fork United Methodist Church in Meadville.

Burial will be in Meadville cemetery under the direction of Tyler Funeral Home of Brookhaven.

Visitation is from noon to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Laura Myrtis Jordan Hux

LINCOLN COUNTY - Services for Laura Myrtis Jordan Hux, 98, of Bogue Chitto, who died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel, will be at 11 a.m. today at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Lincoln County with the Rev. Murphy Dale Young and the Rev. Lee Roy Myers officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Catchings Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until service time today at the church.

Ethel E. Mims Conway

June 21, 1924 - Sept. 23, 2003

FAYETTE - Services for Ethel E. Mims Conway, 79, of Fayette, who died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Green Leaf Baptist Church in Fayette with Elder Anthony Berry, Elder Robert L. Cox, Jr. and Elder Walter Chambers officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Spencer Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Sister Conway was born icon June 21, 1924, in Shaw, the daughter of Harvey and Sarah Jane Mims.

She confessed Christ at the Fayette Chapel Christian Church in Fayette where she remained a member until her death.

Sister Conway was preceded in death by he parents, one sister and four brothers.

She leaves to mourn her passing four daughters, Sarah Dauphine and husband, John of New Orleans, LA, Geraldine Grammer and husband, Nathaniel of Shelby, Lucille Cooper and husband, Harold of Tustin, CA and Deloris Canady and husband, James of Fredricksburg, VA; two sons, Frank Mims and wife, Geraldine of Ferriday, LA and Vernon Mims and wife, Shella of Austin, TX; one brother, Alfred Mims and wife, Louise of Ingelwood, CA; one adopted brother, Windell Mims and wife, Bernice of Fayette; three sisters, Lucille Jacobs of Shaw, Georgia Bailey and husband, Aaron and Mary Lee Bailey and husband, Claude Sr., all of Fayette; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers will be nephews and great-nephews.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Dauphine, Jr., Marcus Mims, Cedric Grammer, Colter Grammer, Vernon Mims, Jr. and James Canady, IV.

Nathan Anders Jr.

CLANTON, AL - Services for Nathan Anders Jr., 72, of Billingsley, AL, who died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at VA Montgomery in Montgomery, AL, will be at 1 p.m. today at Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Clanton with the Rev. John Acreman and the Rev. Roy Nelson officiating.

Burial will be in Alpine Baptist cemetery in Plantersville, AL under the direction of Martin Funeral Home.

Mr. Anders was born icon Oct. 14, 1930, in Adams County, the son of Nathan Anders Sr. and Stella Anders.

Patricia Faye Hunter

April 6, 1958 - Sept. 21, 2003

WOODVILLE - Services for Patricia Faye Hunter, 45, of Woodville, who died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, in Natchez, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chapel Baptist Church in Woodville with the Rev. Allen Scott officiating.

Burial will be in East Cedar Rest under the direction of Webb Funeral System.

The procession will leave at 10:30 a.m. Saturday from Pond Pirchville Road.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hunter was born icon April 6, 1958, in Woodville, the daughter of Willie Harris and Irene Jarvis.

She was a member of Chapel Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include her husband, David Hunter Jr.; daughter, Chelsea Hunter; four sisters and five brothers; one god-daughter, Tiffany Jarvis.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

L. J. Hunt

March 22, 1929 - Sept. 19, 2003

ROXIE - Services for L. J. Hunt, 74, of Natchez, who died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, will be at noon Saturday at New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Roxie with the Rev. Luther Bonds, Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in the Hunt cemetery in Roxie under the direction of Webb Funeral System.

The procession will leave at 10:50 a.m. Saturday from the home of Susan Hunt.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Hunt was born icon March 22, 1929, the son of Matthew "Gray" and Martha Hunt.

He was educated in the Franklin County Schools, was employed with Quinn Logging and was a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Mr. Hunt was preceded in death by his parents, four children and one brother.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Hunt; six sons, Bill Hunt, Dennis Hunt, Brodreck and Lorenzo Green, L. J. Conner and Maurice Conner; seven daughters, Mattie Covington, Verena Hunt, Shan McCants, Nila and Keisha Green, Lorraine Johnson and Lisa Conners; one brother, Charles Hunt; four step-children, Bertha, James, Dantavious and Emmanuel Griffin; best friend, Eugene Watts.

Pallbearers will be Lee Edward Scott, Henry Conner, Tyrone Jones, Terry Smith, Gerald Ross and Kelvin Arbuthnot.

Eric Thompson

Dec. 23, 1919 - Sept. 21, 2003

Private memorial service for Eric Thompson, 83, of Natchez, who died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at Tracehaven Nursing Home, will be at a later date under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Mr. Thompson was born icon Dec. 23, 1919, in Acrington, England, the son of Arthur and Martha Parkinson Thompson.

He was a veteran of the British Merchant Navy and was a retired master carpenter, sailor, adventurer, inventor, poet, writer, painter, teacher and bird breeder. He loved his family, friends and neighbors. His family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to his dear friends and neighbors who supported him and his family on his last journey.

Jessie Robinson

June 14, 1947 - Sept. 16, 2003

CHICAGO, IL - Services for Jessie Robinson, who died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, was held at 9:30 a.m. September 20, 2003 at Gatling's Chapel in Chicago where the Rev. Edgar B. Johnson, Sr. officiated.

Burial was in Mt. Hope cemetery in Chicago under the direction of Gatling's Chapel.

Mr. Robinson was born icon June 14, 1947, in Natchez, the son of Spencer Robinson, Sr. and Emma Ruth Bass Robinson.

He accepted Christ at an early age, moved to Chicago in 1969 after receiving his education in Natchez and married icon Monica Hainey on Dec. 5, 2001. Jessie was employed at Mount Vernon Elementary School as a custodial worke for 22 years until his illness.

Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy Thomas; and three brothers, Renard, Charles and Spencer.

Survivors include his wife, Monica Robinson; a daughter, Kim Smith; two stepdaughters, Dominique and Katrina Davis; a special niece, Samantha Robinson; four brothers, Ronnie and wife, Rose and Elmore and wife, Sharron, all of Natchez, Freddie and wife, Carolyn and George and wife, Margaret, all of Chicago; two grandsons, Clemens and Cedero Smith; sister-in-law, Juanita Robinson; a special aunt, Eloise Bass of Natchez; his special mother-in-law, Dora Hainey; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

James Handjis, Sr.

Jan. 2, 1922 - Sept. 22, 2003

NATCHEZ - Services for James Handjis, Sr., 81, of Natchez, who died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at his residence, will be at 11 a.m. today at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. Brock Watson officiating.

Burial will be in the Natchez City cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Mr. Handjis was born icon Jan. 2, 1922, in Ft. Doge, Iowa, the son of John and Margaret Richie Handjis.

He grew up on the island of Samos in Greece, was graduated from high school in White Plains, NY and received his B.S. in accounting from New York University. During World War II he was in the 63rd Infantry Division and served in Rhineland and Central Europe. He received many commendations and five medals including the Bronze Star. He was stationed at Camp Van Dorn before deploying overseas. During that time he met Evelyn Netterville, his wife of nearly 60 years. He was a life member of the American Legion. Mr. Handjis has long been a familiar face in the Natchez business community having worked as a Certified Public Accountant here since 1948. He was a member of A.I. CPA and M.S. CPA associations. He was a founding member of the Adams County Water Association. Mr. Handjis also worked tirelessly in helping bring higher education to Natchez. He was part of the team instrumental in putting together the financing to purchase the land on which Copiah-Lincoln and Alcorn State are now located. He taught accounting in those programs for many years. Mr. Handjis is remembered for helping many young Natchez entrepreneurs develop their business plans and set up their record keeping.

Mr. Handjis was noted for his love of his church. He worked with the Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church for over 30 years, served the Miss-Lou communities as a teaching elder, and has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Natchez for many years.

After retirement, he was active in volunteering with the Friends of Five-O Organization and enjoyed many trips with the group.

Mr. Handjis was preceded in death by his parents and twin daughters, Joan and Judy Handjis.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Netterville Handjis of Natchez; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Jackie Handjis, Jr. of Natchez and John Paul and Sherry Handjis of Vidalia, LA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Gary Shaifer of Natchez and Christina and Dan Smith of Phenix City, AL; six grandsons, Shannon, Jonathan and Russell Handjis, Daniel and Colin Smith and Brian Shaifer; two granddaughters, Amanda Handjis Creighton and Kristi Handjis Gillespie; four great-grandchildren, Morgan, William and Stephen Ray Handjis and Chase Gillespie; sister, Catherine Handjis of White Plains, NY.

Pallbearers will be Marvin Hampton, Kenneth Hampton, Shannon Handjis, Russell Handjis, John Gillespie and Dennis Creighton.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Elders of First Presbyterian Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church or Pleasant Acre Day School.

Elaine Roper Jordan

Oct. 19, 1953 - Sept. 20, 2003

NATCHEZ - Funeral Services for Elaine Roper Jordan, 49, of Natchez, who died Sept. 20, 2003 at Baptist Hospital in Jackson, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. Howard Peak officiating.

Burial will be at Kingston cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 1 p.m. until services on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jordan was born icon Oct. 19, 1953, in Bastrop, La., the daughter of Everett Laverne Roper Sr. and Effie Mae Hilton Roper. She was a member of the Cliff Temple Baptist Church and was employed as a rural mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Service. She was a graduate of the University of Northeastern Louisiana and belonged to the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She was a member of the Rose Craft Garden Club and the Friends of St. Catherine Creek Refuge. She served as treasurer of the Kingston Volunteer Fire Department.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Survivors include her father; her husband, Randy Jordan of Natchez; her daughter, Janna Jordan of Bentonville, Ark.; two brothers, Col. Everette Roper Jr. and his wife, Kay, of Enterprise; Ark. and Larry Roper and his wife, Donna, of Greenwood, Ark.; her mother-in-law, Hyla Jordan of Natchez; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Stroud, Donald Wilson, Simmons Hicks, David Wilson, John Keefler and Bucky Colebank.

Honorary pallbearers will be James Freeman, Gordon Hughes and Jamie Forman.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Acre Day School.

Herman Wesley Mazique

May 4, 1952 - Sept. 18, 2003

NATCHEZ - Funeral services for Herman Wesley Mazique, 51, of Natchez, who died Sept. 18, 2003, at Natchez Regional Hospital will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Bob Zawacki officiating.

Burial will be at Natchez City cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church. A rosary service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Mr. Mazique was born icon May 4, 1952, the son of Herman Westly and Mamie Lee Mazique. He attended college for three years and was self-employed. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his mother; a son, Semitrus Sewell Mazique of Natchez; his fiancée, Fannie Pruitt of Memphis, Tenn.; four aunts; an uncle; and a number of other relatives.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.
