A Time Be born icon . . .
Ms. Carolyn Drayton was born icon December 1, 1958 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to the late Clarence Drayton, Sr. and Sweetie Bell Drayton. She is preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Drayton, Jr. and a sister, Linda Ray Drayton.

A Time To Plant . . .
On her quest to fulfill God's promises in Proverbs 3:13-14, "Blessed is the person who finds wisdom, the person who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold, " Ms. Drayton confessed and accepted Christ at an early age and united with China Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Her quest granted growth and spiritual development which inspired her to remain a motivated and faithful member until her death. She served as a dedicated choir member from her youth forward, fitting her personality, talent and belief. Directing her principles was I Corinthians 14:15, "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." This belief was evident in her passion for singing as she eagerly sang throughout the community which included various church programs.

Ms. Drayton was employed at Vicksburg-Warren School District for over 27 years where she served as the Administrative Assistant for the Special Education Department. She also taught herself to do hair and became very well known for enhancing the beauty of many.

A Time To Die . . .
It is a fact that life is uncertain but two facts must claim our attention and they are the certainty and nearness of death. Christianity does not exempt one from death; it only insures triumph over death. Ms. Drayton accomplished this triumph on Friday, November 28, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Specialty Hospital of Meridian, Mississippi, where she answered God's calling and gracefully accepted her mansion in the light blue sky.

A Time To Remember . . .
Left to forever cherish the fond memories of her legacy are: two lovely daughters of whom she held dear to her heart, Katrina (Chico) Chandler and Rhonda (James) Rail of Nashville, Tennessee; two brothers, Sam (Mary Kay) Drayton of Denver, Colorado and Eddie Drayton of Pearl, Mississippi; three sisters, Rosie Lee Thomas and Bobbie Jean Liggins of Vicksburg, Mississippi and Patricia (Willie) Mallett of Edwards, Mississippi; six grandchildren, Makayla, Treyvion, JaKobi, Madisyn, Jonah and Ty all of Nashville, Tennessee and a host of other cousins, relatives, co-workers and friends.

THE PATRIARCH

Truly, Robert Pickett helped rise and touch so many lives of students, student-athletes, and the like throughout his 44 years of service in education. With his commanding presence of 6'3", 240 lbs., Pickett could give that "look" and his students would snap back into place from any wrong-doings!

With this said, Robert Pickett put his family first. In 1955, he married icon Dorothy Owens of Bentonia, Mississippi. From this union, two children were born: Deborah "Debbie" Denise (Marshall) and Ritchie Elyot (Belinda). Debbie and Ritchie went on to marrying and having successful family and careers themselves, and credit their father for posturing them for these blessings.

The Pickett's are the grandparents of 5 grandchildren: Melanie, Ryan, Rashad, Kiana and Evan. Pickett also had an honorary "daughter" many are not aware of, a toy Poodle by the name of Princess who he called "lil' girl".

Affectionately known as "daddy" and "papaw", Robert was more than a disciplinarian and respected educator. He was a sweet, kind and gentle family man. His love for gadgets and the latest of technology was understood amongst family members. Everyone in the family knew not to touch "Papaw's stuff"! Robert Earl Pickett was absolutely a stickler for detail and would know if any of his gadgets and toys had been moved out of place. For his 5 grandchildren, this was always a difficult temptation to suppress.

Cited in a 1989 Vicksburg Post article about Pickett's life as a family man and educator, a [then] 8 year old Melanie (Robert's eldest granddaughter) acknowledged Mr. Pickett's love for gadgets and family. She told the Post, "Papaw has three computers, two typewriters, twelve telephones, eight televisions, and three VCRs..." The writer, Martha Day, found this amusing noting that Melanie's tabulation of her grandfather's electronics was questionable! However in the article, Robert's daughter Debbie confirmed this to be accurate and true. Gadgets and technology truly made him happy!

In addition to gadgets and technology, Mr. Pickett was a cook who had a specialty in grilling and gumbo. He prided himself in trying new meats and grilling styles. One might also find Mr. Pickett in the aisles of the local grocery store chipping in on the night's next great meal!

Living a favored and extraordinary life is a gift. Yet being able to enter into a beautiful eternal life is the reward we all pray to be given. There is no question Robert Earl Pickett now receives this honor. Good deeds and love that were born icon in earthly life now follow Robert Pickett into his new life!
