Harry Brady Shepherd was born icon on January 9, 1953 in Gulfport, Mississippi to the late Harry Brady Shepherd, Sr. and the late Dorothy Walker Shepherd. He attended 33rd High School in Gulfport, Mississippi and Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi. He was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He enjoyed long talks with his family and friends, fishing, hunting, and photographing others. His career paths included welding and youth counseling. Harry shared his love for and trust in Christ with many people.

Harry departed this life on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother (Clifford Jackson), and one daughter (Antoinette Horne).

He leaves to cherish his memories two daughters, Alda Shepherd of Memphis, TN and Nicosia (Michael) Hooker of Kansas City, MO; four sons, Trevor Barnett and Ajary Horne both of Gulfport, MS; George Gaskin and Demond Patton both of Vicksburg, MS; three sisters, Belinda Lewis and Barbara Shepherd of Gulfport, MS and Alice Morris of New York City, NY; two nephews, Oliver Martin and Michael Brown; eight grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Reverend Henry Mayfield, Sr., was born icon on July 1, 1930 in Lexington, Mississippi to the late Woodson and Josephine Mayfield. He departed this life on Wednesday, October 29, 2014, at River Region Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by siblings Tommy Mayfield, Alma Snow, Flora Mayfield, Daniel Mayfield, Oscar Mayfield, Sr., Arthur Mayfield, Sr., Evelyn Hoskins, Elizabeth Gee, and Nathan Mayfield; two grandsons, Eric Mayfield and Jonquil Lee; mother and father-in-law, George and Ruby Smith, Sr.; sisters-in-law, Doris Odom, Josephine Mayfield, and Mayola Mayfield; brothers-in-law George Smith, Jr., Ernest Snow, Percy McDonald, Sr., Perry Gee, and John Hoskins.

Reverend Mayfield accepted Christ at an early age. He was baptized and became a member of Bright Morning Star Baptist Church. Later in his adult life, he and his family joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church where they served faithfully for over 40 years.

In 1965, he was called into the ministry and has served faithfully for nearly 50 years. He was a member of Mt. Elem Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Reverend Dr. Leonard Walker. He was pastor of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church – Eagle Lake Community (45 years) and Mt. Zion No 4. – Kings Community (44 years) at the time of his demise. Past pastorates were El Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Satartia, Mississippi (16 years) and Brookhaven Missionary Baptist Church, Flowers, Mississippi (14 years).

He was a spiritual and community-minded man. He held fast to his convictions on civic duties and social responsibilities. He insisted that his children register to vote as soon as they became 18 years of age. He was never afraid to speak on what and how he felt about political candidates. He supported many candidates and through his efforts with his large family, ministerial colleagues, community friends, and congregations, they were voted into office.

He was very proud of his wife and children and always insisted that his children obtain an education. He once stated that if his children do not get an education, it is not because he did not enforce it. He also insisted that his children live to the highest moral standards: serve God first, love your family and your fellow man. He lived that example. His word was his bond.

Reverend Mayfield leaves to cherish his memories: a loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Mrs. Dorothy Smith Mayfield; thirteen children, Catherine (Reverend J. Ronzell) Maness, Augusta, Georgia, Mary Logan, Linda (Garland) Cary, Vicksburg, Mississippi; Vera Lawyer, Pensacola, Florida, Henrietta Spates, Henry (Rosalyn) Mayfield, Jr., Frances Lacey, Michael (Bertha) Mayfield, Sr., Reverend Gregory (Lynniese) Mayfield, Harold (Sandra) Mayfield, Cynthia (Bill) Brown, Sr., Vincent Mayfield, Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Donald Mayfield, Sr., Bronx, New York; sisters-in-law, Katie Larry, Irene Mayfield, Pearl Thomas, Delores Harrington, Shirley Smith, Gladys Smith, Betty Smith and Ernestine Smith, Vicksburg, Mississippi; brothers-in-law, Willie Henry Smith, Sr., James Harrington and Sidney Thomas; a devoted son-in-law (loved as a son), Reverend Luster Lacey, and a devoted nephew (loved as a son) Walter Coleman; thirty grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

William Charles Deck passed from this life on October 29, 2014 at River Region Hospital in Vicksburg. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 1st at 2:00 pm at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Vicksburg.

Mr. Deck was born icon January 11, 1942 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He married icon Ramona Sweeney on November 11, 1961. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years, including duty stations in Guam, Iceland, Greece, as well as Air Force Bases in Texas, Ohio, Michigan, and Oklahoma. During his military career, he also completed two masters’ degrees in Education and Criminal Justice. He retired with the rank of Captain in October 1982 after serving as Chief of Security Police at Vance AFB in Enid, Oklahoma.

After retiring from military service, Mr. Deck and his family moved to Vicksburg in August 1984, where he took a Security Supervisor position at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, eventually working as Security Superintendent there for over 16 years.

He is survived by his wife, Ramona Deck, of Vicksburg; his eldest son, William C. Deck, Jr. of Branson, Missouri; as well as by siblings Thomas Deck, Robert Deck, and Barbara Reynolds, all of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cletus A. and Henrietta Deck of Fort Wayne, Indiana, as well as by his youngest son, Warren C. Deck.

Inez G. Carter was born icon December 9, 1957 in Fayette, MS. She was a spirit filled woman who accepted Christ at an early age. Inez was ordained to preach the gospel on April 27, 2003 by Bishop Stanley B. Searcy Sr. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Natchez, MS.

Inez spent her life reaching out and helping others in whatever way she could. She would encourage others and consistently be an up-lifter of all who came in contact with her. As being a part of the ministry at New Hope M.B. Church under the leadership of Bishop Stanley B. Searcy, Sr. and Co-Pastor Brenda A. Searcy, she could be heard ministering with a theme of love, as it was always her motivator.

One of her encouraging songs would be “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey. You’ll never know dear how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away.” She truly leaves a great legacy behind of love, hope, compassion and so much more. She was a true woman of God!

Inez is predeceased by her mother Josie Mae Harris and her fathers, George Green and James McBride. She is also predeceased by one son, Robert Louis Smothers, III; one sister, Etta McBride Hudson; and five brothers, Joe Terry Green, Louis McBride, Richard McBride, Robert McBride and Willie McBride.

She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Joseph Carter; three daughters, LaKiesha (Bobby) Smothers-Evans of Vicksburg, MS; LaTonya (Tommie) Smothers-Bell of Natchez, MS and Wanda (Joseph) Butler of Vicksburg, MS; five sons, Dominique Smothers of Vicksburg, MS; Calvin (Pertrese) Smothers of Vicksburg, MS; Robert (Catina) Smothers, Jr. of Muskogee, OK; Steven Carter of Vicksburg, MS and Joseph Arnold Carter of Vicksburg, MS; thirteen grandchildren, Christopher Bell of Natchez, MS; Danielle Smothers, Daniel Smothers, Darius Smothers, Talia Sweezer, Tamara Sweezer, Tamia Sweezer, Eddie Sweezer, Jr., Jerrica Carter, Dorian Carter, Amber Carter, Romeo Carter and Jasmine Freeman all of Vicksburg, MS; two great-grandchildren, Jaidon Carter and Landin Carter all of Vicksburg, MS; four sisters, Ruby Ann Green, Georgain Henderson, Linda Ann Devote, Burnella (Robert) Tyler all of Vicksburg, MS; five brothers, Connie Gibson of Vicksburg, MS; Percy (Sandra) Harris, Jr. of Pattison, MS; Alfred (Sharon) McBride of Vicksburg, MS; Williard Troy (Lisa) McBride of Vicksburg, MS and James (Tammy) Taylor of Los Angeles, California; one god-daughter, Mary Nelson of Natchez, MS; two great-aunts, Lugenia (Sam) Scott of Vicksburg, MS and Easter Earls of Natchez, MS: and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Mae Francis Eatmon Brown was born icon August 27, 1948 to the late Robert and Cleo "Honey" Eatmon. Mae Francis was born icon in rural Hinds County and attended Hubbard Grade School and graduated from Hinds Agricultural High School in Utica MS.

Mae Francis was baptized at an early age at Belmont Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a faithful member until her death.

After graduating from high school, Mae Francis moved to Vicksburg where she was blessed to have met Ellis and Frances Koury, owners of Koury's Children Shop where she worked for over 30 years. Mae Francis fondly claimed the Kourys as her second family.

Mae Francis had a beautiful compassionate spirit, always willing to work and lend a hand in need. Her beautiful smile, her style and grace will always be remembered.

Mae Francis passed away at her home on October 25, 2014. Preceding her in death are her parents, Robert and Cleo Eatmon; five brothers: Jonathan, Louis, James Raymond, Walter Luster and Edmond Carson; one sister Jeanetta Eatmon Kelley. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband of 33 years, Roy Brown of Vicksburg; her stepson, Roy Calvin Brown of Vicksburg; three stepdaughters, Kimberly Brown-Lane (Dedric) of Vicksburg, and Tiffany Brown and Tammy Brown, both of Southaven; four sisters, Maggie Dell Cook of Edwards and Willena Huband and Zeanetta Eatmon, both of Vicksburg, and Mary Louise Eatmon of Fort Worth, TX.; five step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of other family members and friends.

She also leaves her beloved Koury family, Frances Koury wife of the late Ellis Koury, of Vicksburg; brother, Ellis Glenn Koury (Cyndi) of Dallas, TX; two Sisters, Kate Knudsen of Sonoma, CA and Connie Hosemann (David) of Vicksburg.

Mr. Joseph Hunt, Sr. was born icon to the late Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Hunt on June 27, 1942 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was the second born icon of four sisters and two brothers.

He confessed Christ at an early age at Grove Street Baptist Church in Vicksburg. He attended Rosa A. Temple High School in Vicksburg, Mississippi and he also dedicated twenty years of his life to Gary Community School in Gary, Indiana.

Joseph departed this life on October 24, 2014 at the age of 72 in Jackson, Mississippi. He fought a good fight and the battle is WON.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Hunt and Patsy Hunt, a brother, Charles Hunt and a nephew, William H. Cooper.

He leaves to cherish his memories a daughter, Gidget Hunt, son, Joseph Hunt, Jr. (Catherine) all of Vicksburg, Mississippi; four sisters, Charlean Cooper (Cornelus) of Forestville, Maryland, Edith Scott, Calannye Jackson and Eleanor Weddington (Vincent) all of Dallas, Texas; one brother, John Hunt of Dallas, Texas; seven grandchildren, Michelle Hunt, Quintin Miles, Keshia Hunt, Jomar Hunt, Schaqualese Miles, Shakita Hunt all of Vicksburg, Mississippi and Valencia Keys of Grand Rapids, Michigan twenty great-grandchildren; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Leroy's life can be characterized by his generosity and love toward his family and all he encountered. Leroy and his siblings shared a close relationship throughout their entire lives. He enjoyed the family reunions, fishing, hunting and fellowship with his church family.

Leroy was the ninth of twelve children born icon on January 12, 1948 to Dennis, Jr. and Mary Brown who preceded him in death along with his brothers, Dennis Brown, III, James Brown and Freddie Johnson; sisters, Joann Brown, Frankie Lightfoot, and Thelma Johnson. Leroy was born icon and raised in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He accepted Christ at an early age at St. John Baptist Church in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Leroy served as a deacon at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church for many years until God called him home on Monday, October 20th, surrounded by family and friends.

Leroy leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife, Cherry Walker Brown; three daughters, Felicia Brown, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Brittany Brown and Whitney Brown, both of Vicksburg, Mississippi; one son, Marcus (Jackie) Brown of Summerville, South Carolina; grandchildren, Brendan and Briawna, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Kaitlyn, Kaleigh and Kianah of Summerville, South Carolina, and Marquis and Landen of Vicksburg, Mississippi; brothers, Bobby Jack Brown, Harry George Brown and Dennis Johnson of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Terry (Virginia) Brown of Alexandria, Louisiana, and Earnest Paul (Darlene) Brown of Houston, Texas; sisters, Lorene Tate of Memphis, Tennessee, Pauline Harris, Mary Louise Brown and Canerie (Don) Garret of Vicksburg, Mississippi; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends including the Pettis, Harris, Pollard, Cartwright, Shelton, Jackson and Franklin families and a multitude of friends.

Sylvester Pinkney, known as “Scrap” and “Syl” by family and friends was born icon December 24, 1942 to the late Samuel Pinkney, Sr. and Sarah Pinkney in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

He was of the Baptist faith and a graduate of Rosa A. Temple High School in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Upon graduating, he moved to Hempstead, New York where he attended Hofstra University receiving a Master’s Degree in Accounting.

Sylvester’s hobbies were bowling and traveling. He retired from Beijing University in Beijing, China.

On October 16, 2014 he departed this life at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Pinkney, Sr. and a very special friend, Rudeana Preacely.

He leaves to cherish his memories a son, Sylvester Preacely of Westbury, New York; his mother, Sarah Pinkney of Vicksburg, Mississippi; a brother, Samuel Pinkney, Jr. (Shirley) of Brandywine, Maryland; two sisters, Millie Caldwell of Roosevelt, New York and Gloria Phillips (Felix) of Hempstead, New York; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends including the Nichols, Smith, Caldwell, Preacely, Minor, Hall, Davis, White and Wiggins families.
