On Thursday, April 24, 2014, George Gray, Jr. affectionately known as “Jr” went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jr. was born icon January 09, 1944 in Leland, Mississippi and lived in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

He received employment at Foam Packaging Inc. in July 11, 1985. He retired in July of 2013 due to his illness. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen McFarland; father, George Gray, Sr.; sister, Olivia McFarland; aunt, Rodia Wallace; uncle, Curtis Wallace; and two cousins, Nathan Carson, Sr. and Nathan Carson, Jr.

Jr. leaves to cherish his memories his sister, Mildred McFarland of LA, California; one daughter, Ella L. Welch (Andre) of Vicksburg, Mississippi; three nephews, George Hatchett of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Selvin Wilkerson and Antwine Wilkerson both of LA, California; three cousins, Nita Carson, Bessie Carson and Carolyn Parker all of Vicksburg, Mississippi; a special friend, Diane Cooper of Byram, Mississippi; and a host of cousins and friends.

Mrs. Annie (Betty) Bell Houston Wilson was born icon May 24, 1926 in Gunnison, Mississippi to the union of James Houston, Sr. and Mattie Hunt.

Annie confessed Christ at an early age under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Exeel Marshall of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1941. She later joined Greater
Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in 1951 under the leadership of Reverend C. C. Claiborne. She served on the usher board for three years and in 1972, she joined the Greater Mt. Lebanon Senior Choir where she served faithfully until her death.

Annie attended the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church School on the Mush Hawkins Plantation.

Annie, Betty, as she was affectionately called by love ones, worked both tirelessly and faithfully at Anderson Tully for 50 years where she retired from in 1993.

Annie was called from this life on April 26, 2014 at River Region Medical Center. She was preceded in death by: her loving husband of 60 years, Joseph Owen Wilson, Sr.; parents, James Houston, Sr. and Mattie Hunt; brothers, James Houston, Jr., F. Jerry Houston, Eugene Houston, and William M. Houston; sisters, Paris Young, Deloris Wright, and Bernice Ray; grandson, Michael James Smith; daughter-in-law, Gaynell S. Wilson; step daughter, Diane Davis; stepson, James Davis, Sr.

She leaves to cherish her sweet memories: six sons, Joseph O. Wilson, Jr., Jeffery Wilson, Randy C. Wilson, Timmy A. Wilson and Danny Wilson, all of Vicksburg, Mississippi and Billy Ray Wilson of Dallas, Texas; three daughters, Earnestine Wright and Jennifer Wilson of Vicksburg, Mississippi and Mary Ann Johnson of New Orleans, Louisiana; one sister, Barbara Williams; twenty-six grandchildren; forty-seven great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Marie Wilson Thomas of Albion, Michigan; two brothers-in-law, Roy Wilson and Eris Wilson of Vicksburg, Mississippi and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Mrs. Mary Pettiway Giles died Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. She was 67 years old.

Mrs. Giles was born icon in Warren County, Mississippi on September 6, 1946 to the late George Lewis Pettiway and Elease Harper.

While living in New York, she was a bookkeeper at W. 80th Street Day Care Center. She was a graduate of Rosa A. Temple High School in 1964.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Giles was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Louise Smith Lee.

Survivors include one sister, Shirley King Wallace of Vicksburg; one son, Asinia Zahir Stanback of Vicksburg, his five children, Asinia Adams, Ja’Paris Abram, Asinia Stanback, Jr., JaDaurian Stanback, and Asinia Stanback; one daughter, Ayesha Davis of Vicksburg, and her two children James Turner, Jr., and Jazmine Batchelor; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Terrance "PooH' Warren was born icon on December 3, 1975 to Mr. & Mrs. Lee Charles Warren, Sr. He was raised by a village that included both his maternal and paternal grandparents who preceded him in death. One year following graduation from Vicksburg High School among the Class of 1995, Terrance reported for active duty in the U.S. Army. Upon fulfillment of his initial obligation, he re-enlisted for an additional term. His second term included three years of service in Heidelberg, Germany where he resided for an additional seven years upon his retirement and separation from the military. For his military service, Terrance was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon.

Terrence received a degree in Culinary Arts from the renown Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France. He eventually made his home in Las Vegas, NV when he returned stateside. He accepted an offer from celebrity chef, Kerry Simon, and was employed as the Head Sous Chef at the Palms Palace of the Palms Casino Resort there for several years. Terrance relocated to Austin, TX in August 2013 where he was employed as the chef at David's North Austin Medical Center.

An angel was dispatched to accompany Terrance to his eternal home when the sun set on his life on Wednesday, April 9, 2014. Terrance was loved by many and will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his father and leaves to celebrate his life: his mother, Odessa A. Warren; brothers: Patrick D. Brown (Lisa), Billy Hall, ]r. (Shirley), Lee Charles Warren, ]r., and Kevin D. Warren; sisters, Brittany L. Warren and Sha'Kyra D. Thomas, all of Vicksburg; his maternal aunts, Jimmie A. Jones (Roger) of New Augusta, MS; Rita F. On Sunday, April 13, 2014, Victor Quinn was gently taken away by God.

Victor Dynell Elisha Quinn, is the son of Victor Quinn, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Pamela Williams Quinn of Natchez, Mississippi.

Victor was a member of New Life Apostolic Church, pastored by Eugene Prater in Natchez, Mississippi.

Victor was a junior at Alcorn State University, majoring in Bio Medical Technology. He also enjoyed playing basketball and spending quality time with his family, friends, and loved ones. Victor was an employee at the Natchez Regional Hospital.

On March 15, 2014, Victor was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Britni Richards Quinn of Utica, Mississippi. This union was blessed with a son, Elijah Isaiah Quinn.

Victor will be forever cherished through memories of: his devoted wife, Britni Quinn, Utica, Mississippi; son, Elijah Quinn Utica, Mississippi; father, Victor Quinn, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and mother, Pamela Quinn Natchez, Mississippi; two sisters, Melanie Quinn and Whitney Williams, both of Natchez, Mississippi; three brothers, Dennis Williams, Zaccheaus Quinn, and Jeremiah Quinn all of Natchez, Mississippi; grandmother, Mary Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Lillie Giles Lewis, 95, of Port Gibson, Mississippi departed this life peacefully, on Friday, April 11, 2014. Mrs. Lewis was born icon on May 19, 1918 to the late John and Mariah Giles, Sr. She was educated in the Claiborne County public school system.

She met the love her life, Eddie Lewis, Sr. and they married icon in 1937; from this union was born icon six children: Charles Lewis, Shirley Lewis, Ella Lewis Selmon, Jessie Lewis, Flora Lewis Gilliam, and Vernon Lewis.

Mrs. Lewis accepted Christ at an early age, and was a member of the Magnolia Missionary Baptist Church. She later joined the First Seven Day Adventist Church of Port Gibson, at which she remained a member until her peaceful rest.

Her greatest love was her family. She was a loving and giving person who lived a long and fulfilled life. Mrs. Lewis will be remembered for her strength, motherly advice, love, and devotion to her family.

She is preceded in death by: her husband, Eddie Lewis, Jr.; her mother and father, John and Mariah Giles, Sr.; her brothers, Taylor, Doc, Kernel, John, and Columbus Giles; her sister Malinda Giles; and her granddaughter, Myra Nicole Floyd.

She is survived by: her sons Charles and Vernon (Mary Ann) of Port Gibson, Mississippi; daughters Shirley Lewis and Flora Lewis Gilliam of Port Gibson, Mississippi, Ella Lewis Selmon (Nolen) of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Jessie Lewis of Battle Creek, Michigan; and one sister, Lucy Giles Thompson of Jackson, Mississippi. She also leaves to cherish her memories loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends

Mrs. Mittie Bell Reed Buck (better known to family, friends and local community as Mickie) was born icon on November 07, 1945 in Claiborne County, MS to the late Ned and Catherine Reed. She was the third of three children. She was a graduate of Port Gibson High School and later received vocational training as a nurses’ aide and industrial certification.

Mrs. Mittie accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was baptized at Springhill M.B. Church. As a member of Springhill, she served: as a choir member, member of the Mother Board, the Assistant Church Secretary, and a member of the Worker’s Club. She transferred her faithful and devoted service to Word of Faith Christian Center- Vicksburg, MS in the mid-2000s. She was a very faithful member and served as a greeter.

In the 1970s, she joined James E. Buck in Holy Matrimony. She believed in the principle, “Love bearth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, and endureth all things. Love never fails” (I Corinthians 13:7-8). James continued to have a special place in her heart until she made her Heavenly transition.

Mrs. Mittie believed in hard work. Her career experiences included: Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (Betchel), Port Gibson Electric, Management for Bill’s Dollar Store, and Cooper Lighting Industries (where she retired in the early 2000s) One of her biggest hobbies was walking. She would often walk numerous laps around her neighborhood and the local tracks. She used this time for bodily exercise and fellowship with family and friends. She loved yard work, and embraced opportunities to travel.

Mrs. Mittie’s children stand on Proverbs 31:28, “her children arise up, and call her blessed….”, she was indeed a Virtuous Woman and will forever be in our hearts.

Mrs. Mittie was preceded in death by her parents Ned Reed and Catherine Reed of Port Gibson, MS and her sister, Ollie Mae Gusta of Chicago, IL.

On Tuesday, April 8, 2014, Mrs. Mittie Bell (Reed) Buck made her transition to be with the Lord in Jackson, MS.

Mrs. Mittie’s family will miss her, but will be awaiting the day to join her in praising the Lord forever in Heaven. She leaves to cherish her memories three children: Gregory (Janice) Reed of Lorman, MS, Edward (Shanell) Reed of Natchez, MS, and Jessica L. Buck (Tom) Murphy of Ridgeland, MS; one sister, Ruthie (Robert) Anderson of Vicksburg, MS; one brother, Arnette (Margaret) Nash of Port Gibson, MS; five grandchildren: Ta’Quita Peters, Parris Walker, Candace Reed, Heather Almekdad and LaDarrius Gaines; two special nephews, Robert Anderson, Jr. of Fayette, MS and Michael Reed of Vicksburg, MS; a special cousin, Willie Ruth (Robert) Green of Port Gibson, MS; two aunts, Marriah Gains and Rosie Lee Goldsberry of Port Gibson, MS; and a host of loving family and friends including James E. Buck of Port Gibson, MS; Lakesha (Jerome) Brooks of San Antonio, TX; and Hattie Fraizer and Elizabeth McInnis of Jackson, MS.

Willie McCoy, III (Scooter), was born icon on March 7, 1989 to Ms. Tommie Griffin and Mr. Willie McCroy, Jr. in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

He attended Vicksburg High School and was employed at Cappaert Manufacturing; he was previously employed with the City of Vicksburg. Scooter was a fun loving person. He had a smile that would make your saddest day bright again. He absolutely loved his family, and looked forward to family gatherings weekly…even if it was barbequing or just watching a game.

Scooter loved the Lord, and recognized Christ as his savior. We know he is dwelling with his Father in Heaven, away from the troubles of this old world.

Scooter was a devoted and loving father...forever cherishing his baby girl, Jamira. He was definitely a mama’s boy, and had a great respect for the elders of his family. He also had a love of dancing and performing with his friends, and has actually recorded several songs.

Scooter departed this world on the night of April 5, 2014 in a tragic car accident.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, John Elmore and his paternal grandparents, Rebecca McCroy and Willie McCroy.

He leaves to cherish his memories and celebrate his life: one daughter, Jamira McCoy; his parents, Ms. Tommie Griffin and Mr. Willie McCroy, Jr. (Willie Mae); one sister, Fermika Griffin Smith (Chris); one brother, Antonio Griffin (LaTanyia); two stepbrothers, Deon Davis and Patrick Webb; stepsister, Tiffany Thomas; maternal grandmother, Roberta Conner Griffin; one niece, Atoni Griffin; one nephew, D’Tarius Griffin; five uncles, five aunts, a host of cousins, special friends as well as dear friends; and members of the Conner and Davis Families. He loved them all!!

Nathaniel “John” Perkins was born icon on January 10, 1960 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to the late John D. “Money Q” Dixon, Jr., and the late Linda Ann Perkins-Betts who were of Vicksburg. His maternal grandparents were the late Viola Warren and the late Jack Prentiss who were of Vicksburg. His paternal grandparents were the late John Dixon, Sr. and the late Claudia Young who were of Vicksburg. With his wife by his side, he was called to his eternal home on Thursday March 27, 2014.

He was a graduate of Vicksburg High School, class of 1979 and Hinds Community College in 1981. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve and active duty with the U.S. Army. He was an entrepreneur and owner of John’s Body Shop.

John confessed Christ at an early age. He was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Ann Perkins-Betts, his father, John D. “Money Q” Dixon, Jr., his maternal grandparents, Viola Warren and Jack Perkins; his paternal grandparents, John Dixon, Sr. and Claudia Young and his brother, Calvin Jenkins.

He leaves to honor his memory a loving and devoted wife of 14 ½ years, Tonya Suzette Hall-Perkins of Vicksburg; two sons, Jonathan Woodson and Jonathan Jackson both of Vicksburg; three daughters, Idella Darcia Shorter of Houston, Texas, Adrienne Ivette Bingham and Tamisha Stowers both of Vicksburg; six brothers, James Odell Dixon of Chicago, IL, Kevin (Faye) Jenkins of Vicksburg; Eric Washington of Vicksburg; Tyrone Jenkins of Vicksburg, Reno (Cynthia) Shorter of Clinton, MS; Sedrick (Adrian) Perkins of Vallejo, CA; nine sisters, Harriet Perkins-Blair of Bradford, OH, Viola (Henry) Tidwell of Vicksburg, MS; Deenan (Tony) of Benson of Huntsville, AL; Anna Perkins of Vicksburg; Linda M. Frenchie Bernard Taylor was born icon July 6, 1974 to Mary Lucille Taylor and Willie Lee Washington in Hinds County.

He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Greater New St. Paul in Tunica, Mississippi. He later joined Zion Travelers Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Alfred Lassiter, Jr. Frenchie was a veteran of the United States Navy serving onboard the USS Siapan in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was a Culinary Arts Specialist. He became a chef for Roadhouse Restaurant in Duson, Louisiana.

He was preceded in death by: his grandmothers, the late Nellie Marie Cater and Ethel Washington; an aunt, Odessa Washington; and two uncles, Harry Washington, Jr., and George Washington.

Frenchie was a loving father and gentle giant. He loved all of his family dearly. He departed this life on Thursday, March 20, 2014.

He leaves to cherish his memories: one daughter, Francheska Aliyah Taylor; his mother, Mary L. Collins; father, Willie Lee Washington of Vicksburg, Mississippi; four sisters, Onita (Alfred) Lassiter and Sheila Taylor of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Cassandra (Russell) Glover of Lexington Park, Maryland and Arlicia (Joe) Coleman of Orlando, Florida; five brothers, Robert (Lisa) Rogers of Boston, Massachusetts, Kenny Rogers of Clermont, Florida, Anthony (Staci) Washington of Beloit, Wisconsin, David Lemar Hoyt and Scotty Hoyt of Rolling Fork, Mississippi; nine nieces, eleven nephews, and a host of cousins, uncles, aunts, including a very special aunt, Nellie Harris, the Carter, Harris, Taylor, Ford, Washington and Rogers Family and a host of loving friends.

Willie Mae Lewis Jones was born icon on September 3, 1918 to the Willie Lewis and Susie Jones Lewis in Phillips County, Arkansas.

She was reared in Vicksburg, Mississippi and attended Magnolia High School. She worked for Dr. C.E. Buckner of Vicksburg, Mississippi for six years. In 1941, Willie Mae relocated to Newark, New Jersey where she lived for many years. She retired in Gainesville, Florida and return to Vicksburg in November of 1999.

Willie Mae was preceded in death by her husband, James Jones; mother, Susie Lewis; father, Willie Lewis; two sisters, Aline Coffer, Mary Lee Norman; and one brother, Joseph D. Hopkins.

Her memories will forever be cherished by her cousins, Robert (Joyce) Jones, Alma Jones, Carolyn Jefferson, Danielle Williams Ronnie Buck, Mattie Jones and James Williams all of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Melvin Jones, Charles Jones, Ernest Jones, Myrtis Silas and Ruby Lee Buck all of California, Rosie Schemigel of Chicago, Illinois, niece, Michelle Reed of Fresno, Texas; nephew, Melvin Earl Hopkins of Detroit, Michigan and a dear friend, Roberta Currie.

Marie Young Sims was born icon on May 10, 1926 to Mr. Truly Richardson and Mrs. Mary P. Richardson on May 10, 1926 in Port Gibson, Mississippi. She departed this life on March 9, 2014 at River Region Medical Center. She was 87 years old.

She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Mount Alban Missionary Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Truly and Mary Richardson; husbands, Mitchell Young, Sr. and Eddie Sims; two children; Mary Louise Carter and Mitchell Young, Jr.; three grandchildren, Fitzgerald Giles, Columbus Richardson and Richie Anderson.

Her memories will be forever cherished by her eleven children; four daughters, Deloris Dixon of District Heights, Maryland, Annie Lee Giles of Temple Hills, Maryland, Margie Ree Richardson and Cariola Price both of Vicksburg, Mississippi; seven sons, Samuel Lee (Joan) Richardson of Forestville, Maryland, Sam Wilson, Jr. of District Heights, Maryland, Elbert (Blanche) Young of Marietta, Georgia, Zachary (Dianne) Young of Natchez, MS, Willie Earl (Sherry) Young, Michael Young and Gregory Young all of Vicksburg, MS; twenty-seven grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Dora M. Wolf of Vicksburg and Etta Claiborne of Port Gibson, MS; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Danielle DeJuan Peoples was born icon to Edward Peoples, Sr. and Juanita McKenzie on September 14, 1998.

Danielle committed her life to God at the tender age of ten. She was a faithful member of the New Mt. Elem Baptist Church, where she was a junior usher and a former member of the Angels of Heaven Praise Ministry. Her love for dance led her to I Can Fly Ministries Radical Praise for Christ where she praised and danced for God until her death.

Danielle was a former member of Girl Scout Troop #5184. She spent numerous years volunteering and selling the infamous Girl Scout cookies. Danielle was an excellent speller. While a student at Travelers Rest Christian Academy, she competed twice in the State-Level spelling bee. Danielle was a sophomore at Vicksburg High School where she participated in numerous activities. She was a member of Ambassadors for Christ. She continued dedicating her time as a volunteer manager with the VHS track team.

Danielle is preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, the late Eddie Peoples and maternal great-grandmother, the late Susie L. Smith.

In addition to her loving parents, Danielle leaves behind: paternal grandmother, Mary Peoples of Edwards, Mississippi; maternal grandmother Juanita McKenzie of Vicksburg, MS; siblings, Jackie Peoples-Dorsey (Shawn) of Vicksburg, MS; Tosca Wright of Austell, GA; LaDonna Sanders of Edwards, MS; Kontrell Tobias of Vicksburg, MS: T’Nile Peoples-Claiborne (Kenny) of Vicksburg, MS; Edward Peoples, Jr. (Joan) of Douglasville, GA; Keisha Mobley of Vicksburg, MS; Edwin Peoples of Vicksburg, MS: Joshua Peoples, Elizabeth Peoples, Genesis Peoples of Dallas, TX; and a host of uncles, aunts and cousins.
